  • Shin-Soo Choo was quietly one of the most productive hitters of the late 2000s and early 2010s. So why doesn't anyone talk about him? Let's discuss in episode 2 of Underappreciated Players.

Shin-Soo Choo is one of those guys who you don’t think of when naming great players from the last 10 years, but definitely deserves to be on that list.

Texas signed Choo to a huge contract... and hit him 8th. This is what I NEVER understood, he was a leadoff hitter, when Choo hit leadoff he hit very very well, his OBP was his best stat he was the perfect leadoff hitter!

He's been such an excellent player in MLB but he's often overlooked. He'll be missed

Dude is my favorite Ranger of all time. Ya “all time”

Lmao Choo was a pitcher in middle AND highschool before coming to Seattle as a hitter

Ichiro's insane career Clutch stat (8.28, 5th all-time) actually narrows the gap significantly, but its fair to argue that Choo was still a little more valuable purely with the bat.

Super underrated. Was only a 1 time all star but he had a long above average career and has the most Hrs by an asian player in the majors. Though that record will probably be surpassed by Ohtani sooner or later

Choo had some decent stats for a while but he was never more than an average to slightly above average player even at his peak. His huge contract with the Rangers was easily one of the worst and most undeserved ever.

Choo is awesome. He maybe never was a SUPERSTAR with the Rangers, but everyone in Texas loves him.

There's a lot of people pressed about you saying Choo's a better hitter, but Choo got on base more and hit for a higher slugging percentage both in his best seasons and for his career. That's being a better hitter! That doesn't mean Ichiro's not the better baseball player.

I remember the Mariners had both Choo and Suzuki at the same position.

People still don’t appreciate OBP enough

People appreciate obp plenty now, they never shut up about it. It just wasn't as appreciated 10-15 years ago when Choo was in his prime.

Choo's fielding isn't great but the factor that made MLB ball clubs overlook that was his arm. It's because originally, he started out as a pitcher in the minor leagues, hence a great throwing arm. That was the reason why he was even able to play outfielder and made him look better than he really was as an outfielder. But nonetheless, he was a great player. Career OBP of .377(Better than Ichiro's .355), career BA of .275, and 218 home runs aren't average stats.

Trying to suggest Choo is a better hitter than Ichiro (who is unarguably one of the purest and best hitters of all time) is crazy!

    • @dshyon

"Pure" hitter is definitely not what Ichiro was. Ichiro was a legendary contact hitter but Choo had a far better hit tool with his ability to hit gap to gap and homers.

Choo was never ever ever ever a better hitter than Ichiro. I don't care what made up stat you throw at the wall.
