- Templetown was the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Wexford. This religious military order was founded in the 12th century to protect Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. By the time of the Norman conquest of Ireland they had become wealthy landowners and bankers throughout Europe. Unfortunately for the Templars their wealth and power became a source of international jealousy.
Friday the 13th
On Friday the 13th of October 1307 Philip IV, the King of France, arrested leading members of the Knights Templar and seized their property in France. Many of the Templars were brutally tortured until they confessed to false charges. By 1312 Pope Clement had dissolved the Templars and handed most of their property over to the Hospitaller Knights.
Knights of the Order
Templars and Hospitallers were knights before they joined their religious orders. William Marshal joined the Templars from his deathbed. Knights who joined the orders became monks and the red cross emblazoned on the white surcoat of the Templar knights has become a common symbol of medieval Europe. Not all members of these military orders were knights; some were priests and others were un-knighted
Knights in medieval Europe were generally upper-class men from a wealthy background who had spent their childhood as ‘pages’ learning social etiquette and then spent their teens as ‘squires’ learning horsemanship and other military skills.
A Rare Grave Slab
The graveyard across the road contains a rare example of an Irish Knights Templar grave slab. It is rectangular in shape and is decorated with a cross and a lamb.
#history #nostalgia #cemeteryexploring
It's a shameful chapter in history with the Knights being arrested on false charges by the corrupt kings and popes of the era, they were tortured into confessing to false charges, then brutally murdered for their "crimes". But fortunately not all of them were arrested, a large number of them managed to "vanish" and were never captured.
Yes it's history but very sad history
I think the WORST part was how much they helped that RODENT king and all he wanted was their possessions and money 😡
No they were cross examined and they were confessing to worshiping a skull(covenant with death), among other things. They are the originators of the skull and bones iconography you see in secret societies as they trace their rituals to the knights templar and some orgs much more closely than others. Now they operate today like banking gangsters and weaponize the laws and govt to stay in power, research jfk assassination, operation northwoods,WTC7, jeffery epstein, the assassination of apollo 11 crew, the finders cult, and these are just American controversies caused by them
Imo they were hero's in history, and a sign of things to come when the Vatican turned on them ,more so to protect it's secrets than any other reason , secrets Which they viewed to protect and so they became the masons ,I don't like masonic stuff but the Templars will always have a place in my heart
America..
The leaving of stones means that someone came to pay their respect and so that others know they weren't forgotten. Amazing place. Thank you both for bringing us to see it.
Hi Sandra, yes I've heard of that. Don't really see it here in Ireland
I adore all things Templar and studied their history quite a bit in my younger years. It's sad that our Friday the 13th stems from the horrors many of those men endured. They certainly knew how to build things in the most strategic spots, and that tower is a testament to their skills. This adventure was awesome Sue, thank you. Deb of Oz.
Thanks so much Deb, I love walking through their footsteps, very fascinating
God bless them all! Stones and pebbles put on graves as they last forever in rememberance but flowers don’t. Loved the stone history tour of the graves and Templars - that first grave with the large lamb with spear was a Templar
Yes Sue, that was the Templars grave, pretty amazing
That was fascinating Sue. No ordinary Knights but actual Templars.
Thanks Damian
Great video Sue. The church ruins and graveyard were fascinating! I see you found one Templar's grave, perhaps the others have just grave markers. I found the memorial to Michael, who died in a Japanese pow camp moving. BTW, I overheard GV, the Pearl Harbor attack was on December 7th, 1941. The headstones 🪦 for the unidentified seamen from WWI, and the memorial for the crew of that German U-boat were very somber. I think this is one of your best videos yet. Thank you very much again Sue and GV, take care. 😀
Thanks Michael, as always appreciate you watching
@@SerenitySueGraveyards You are very much welcome!
This channel is absolute nourishment to my thirst and curiousity about European medieval structures, old tombs, along with the history.
Thank you Sue.❤

Beautiful stonework 👍 I’ve been a stonemason in my job so I can appreciate the quality ! Lovely video Sue 🙏
Thank you kindly Paul, absolutely amazing
I just love those old headstones and the old stone buildings are beautiful. Thank you for bringing us along and the history lesson. God bless 🙏💕🇨🇦
Our pleasure Roxanne 🙏
Well you know i love all your videos and worry when you go up high stairs but love amazing headstones and all the big surprises you get when you see something new!
😊 thank you, the pigeons were an added bonus here lol
I'm in Michigan U.S., I went on Google street view and looked at the area, beautiful, I wish I could visit.
Isn't it stunning, check out the hook lighthouse and loftus hall
Incredible historic ruins with plenty of fireplaces to warm their bums! Those headstones are very inspiring. To think they were carved as a picture story for those that could not read is amazing. Thanks for reading the headstones it is always the highlight of visiting the cemetery! Well done! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🧡🤍💚
Thanks a million Janet, appreciate it 🙏
The lamb with the cross is the Agnus Dei, it's a Templar sign
Thanks Joan, yes I didn't realise until edit that we had found the Templars grave, amazing to see it
Historic ruins and a beautiful cemetery and location!
Thanks Don ❤️
Another great bit of history Sue..and how beautiful Wexford is the scenery is stunning..Ireland is truly amazing ..must really visit 🇮🇪 🇬🇧
Yes Maureen, you have to visit, it's enchanted ✨️
Wow the story of the denial of Jesus with the cockerel and the 5 pieces of silver for Judas's payment the spear that went into his side and the ladder to take him down . How many grave headstones will be able to be read hundreds of years from now ? There's no depth to the carving . A beautiful tower would have been nice and warm with the fire places . The roof rats (pigeons ) made me laugh when you jumped 🤣 a cracking video , thank you so much x
Thanks so much ❤️
Another beautiful cemetery and it’s history. Thank you Sue and GV for giving us a tour. Lovely view of the sea out the church window. I bet the stained glass windows were beautiful as well. Stay safe, God bless you all🥰🙏👍
Thank you Laurel x
That was a fantastic video Sue, best yet. Thank you, l really enjoyed it x
Glad you enjoyed it Joan, appreciate it
You do a wonderful job of finding these beautiful graveyard and cemeteries . I especially appreciate your reading the headstone. I would like you to continue telling the history and filling in all the details of the churches, towers and everything about the area you are in. I have enjoyed and appreciated cemeteries, tombstones, markers and all the rest. Obviously many other people also enjoy and appreciate what you do. A shout out to Grave Visitations also. Keep up the good work and thank you so much.
Thank you very much Steve 😊
I just looked this up, since these seem to be on quite a few older stones: a ladder means "scale of perfection"; a lamp means a "love of learning, and the immortality of the spirit". Great video, as usual, thank you!
Thanks for the info
Fantastic views and amazing Tower and church x
Thanks a million Marie ❤️
Thank you Sue.
Have a great weekend.

So much amazing history. Whenever I visit graves I like to leave a small stone for remembrance. Great video and great location!

So exciting.. Still watching but love the tone in your voice when you talk about the old historic places and what you gonna find.. 💕
Thanks so much Cathy, really appreciate the feed back
When you speak their names they will never be forgotten. Thank you.
Thanks so much ❤️
Interesting note. Vatican researcher Barbara Frale found a document in Vatican absolving Templars of any heresy. Thank you for this. Fascinating. Check out book Secret Vatican Archives if you can get it. Loved loved 💘 this!
Thanks for the info Jackie
@@SerenitySueGraveyards No prob Sue. Thanks for excellent content as always.
Ireland played a vital role in the provision of the strongest horses for the Order of St. John during the Crusades.
Irish spring water contains a good amount of iron which is very good for the development of strong bones for horses.
I studied history but I didn't know that the Knights Templar also were present in Ireland.
Thank you very much for closing an important knowledge gap.
Keep up the good work 👍🏻
No problem, thanks for the information

Thanks Deborah as always, appreciate it
Get a heavy piece of cardboard and slide down the stairs 🤣🤣. Bless you both. Cool video. The Templars was very interesting story about them. Thanks again you two.
Haha Suzie, maybe 10 years I would have, the smell was horrible, goes to show the amount of birds over the years 🤣
Thank you sue for your tour of that beautiful Cemetery. I enjoyed the Knights of Templar Tower and all the surrounding gravesites. And yes you were very Nimble with your gimbal.😅😅

Very nice video, love the history of the templer. That structure is amazing and the graves are cool to see.
Glad you enjoyed it
New to your channel. Love the contents. So much history so cool. What a learning experience. What makes me so mad that the disrespect of the happenings, history that anyone would want to tear down statues, monuments, rub out the very happening here in the States. I learn more about world history from videos like yours etc. So thank you for sharing. Looking forward to seeing more. From California
Welcome aboard Janet, I have an amazing community here, more like family and friends, you'll be made most welcome ❤️❤️
Love the history! Thank you for sharing 😊💜

Its said in chorley Lancashire, many templar knights are buried on land they owned ,the Mormons have built a Mormon temple on the land xx

Excellent information, thanks for making this,I'm from South kk ,just across the barrow bridge to be exact and I've always loved the Templar history of this area and of course the lotus hall stories ❤
I love KK beautiful and historic, I've several videos from there oh and the with of KK Too. Even went to the famous Kytelers inn. Also have loftus Hall video here too
@@SerenitySueGraveyards iv been in loftus hall a good few times, but it's the Templar history that intrigued me the most, there's even a rumour of some scroll or relic buried with one of the knights there, also as far as I know excavations only uncovered hospitallar knights , it's believed that the Templar knight are all buried nearby in an unmarked site
@JeSTeR-X1o brilliant, thank you, have you been to Temple Michael down near youghal...here's a video I did there

Ireland has to rediscover its local history. The Church has to take up a few collections to put roofs and windows on the buildings and to reset and identify the stones. Serenity Sue thanks for bringing these places to youtube. Nice tourist walk through if fixed up.
Hard to do the way we are taking in unvetted migrants, who turn our churches into mosques and everything else into housing 💔
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Sad , Eventually some sanity will afflict the elected politicians.

It's sooooo interesting! Thank you👍👍👍
So nice of you
A symbol of the Templars was two men on a horse.
Thank you ❤️
Such amazing stone work.
Thank you! Cheers!
This was amazing. Did you happen to find any headstone related to them or carving on the walls of the chapel, which they are known to do. They were also known for digging tunnels under the chapels.
Yes, the first grave we found was in fact a templars grave, it's the ground lying grave with sword and lamb
Thanks Sue. That was so interesting. You both take care. Love 💘 from Africa 🌍 XXxX 💝 xxx xxx 🎈🐘.
Thank you Yvonne ❤️
REMEMBER JACQUES DE MOLAY. LAST GRAND MASTER of THE KNIGHTS TEMPLARS!!!
How's it going, have you heard about temple House near a Town called ballymote Co. Sligo. The original castle/Tower and land was passed onto the hospitallers when the templars were disbanded. The place is now owned by the perceval family since the the 16th century
I hadn't heard of that thanks

I like that old church and the war vet that served with an artillery regiment I to served with the RCA Royal Canadian Artillery reserve Canadian armed forces so even though I did not know him that strikes a core in me because I still feel he was a fellow artillery man so i thank him for his service
Thank you ❤️
WOW😀That was absolutely brilliant,I thoroughly enjoyed that. The tower and graveyard are amazing😀Great also to see the templer grave. We actually have a football team here in Belfast called Crusaders, and there emblem is of a crusader.I wonder does the gravestone that you showed of John Jones who died in 1798 have any connection to the United Irishmen and the rebellion?
Yes it's a beautiful place, yes 1798 could well have had John involved
Thanks sue...

I just loved your video ❤
Thank you so much!!
Lovely place, my last name is Norman Sue, meaning lively one. We came to England in 1066 xx
Wow that's so cool Tom, we have like I said the Norman way here, full of Norman churches and graveyards, it's all signposted

Thanks for sharing an awesome video and true fact my ancestors were from Scotland and date back to the 1200's and also they spoke Gaelic and I would like to visit Scotland some day because its a beautiful country
Interesting! Thanks Scott, hope you can visit there
If you don't duck🦆Sue, those dirty pidgins are going to Bless you!🤣Just like what happen to poor O'l Grave 🐦at the Cemetery, after he was done showing us an Underground Crypt with a Jackpot of Bone's☠☠☠in it. Anyways Sue, that was a Picturesque Cemetery I like the overview of the beach. Sorry you wasn't able to get on the upper floor that would have been a nice higher perspective of the beach, and what ever else was up there. I know you said something about the dust you should always bring a disposable mask😷and gloves🧤with you just in case. I don't want to see you folks catch hantavirus or something from crustified bird droppings. It was good to hear and see you folks again, as I always look forward to spend time with you both.❤Take care now and be safe.❤
Cheers David, oh yes I did not like the feel of bird poop under foot 😳
❤❤❤ thank you!!!

This is a Fascinating Video. I want to ask you a question ? Is Gaelic still spoken ? My Grandmother spoke it and she had FITS about having her Gravestone Information in Gaelic. I was very young and I don’t know if she won that battle.
Yes it is still spoken but not as much, children learn Irish in school still. I've found a couple of headstones with Gaelic on them. Good on your Grandmother
@@SerenitySueGraveyards She regretted scaring me with the Banshee. I told her I was going to put the picture of the banshee on her Gravestone. I actually understood the Gaelic. She really wanted us to learn and speak Gaelic. My Father spoke it and he also wanted us to speak it.
I only know a very little, I can get some understanding from conversation but I can't speak it unfortunately, oh the banshee is frightening
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I wanted to tell you how proud of you I am. My Father sent me to The Convent Of The Sacred Heart for Private High School. I lived at the Convent for 4 years. I heard you speak with extreme knowledge of the Catholic Faith. I learned as well from the Convent Education. A lot of people don’t seem to do that and it is a shame, it’s so Beautiful ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I was scared to death of the Banshee. I wanted to have Fairies in the garden.
Sue my heart was in my stomach as you went up and down those steps.
I just wonder how the Knights were able to handle those steps with the clothes and the long capes they had on
I know they are old and the birds have done a number on them but my Lord they could have made them a little wider fyi I would have never made it up them lol
Great video thank you 🙏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am sure the church windows were glorious with the stained glass.

Pigeons do make nests. Not as detailed as other birds but yes the do.
Yes I kinda had a brain cloud moment, I have never seen their nests in trees but I figure they roost in buildings where they make their nests??
Solid building
It will be there for years to come
Do you have any vampire or witch graves over there..? Just curious... I've seen a few over the years on TV... Just wondering if y'all have any...
Vampires were mostly in Eastern Europe but there’s likely a few around the UK. As far as witches go they never got a Cristian burial as they were seen as in league with the devil and disposed of!
Yes a few witches in Ireland, more folklore
👏👏👍

The date of Philip Walsh's death....December 26th 1956 ....the day I was born........🤔
