- Music is a profoundly powerful thing. At the right time, a melody from a game or a movie can stir up memories of the past, even in those with severe memory disabilities like Alzheimer’s Disease. Today on Psych of Play, we’re going to dive into how memories are encoded into long term memory, and how music is deeply entwined to those connections in your long term memory.

I'm sorry, but "confronting myself" from Celeste is hardcoded into my memory, not just because it was a powerful moment. I died a bajillion times in every level of Celeste. Literally, every song on that damn game is hardcoded into my memory from hours long repetition for every level.

@@LiminalMashups That's rough. I think around 7 and 8 was when I started to look up video guides. Try swapping between controller and keyboard to see if it helps. For me swapping to keyboard from controller made it better after a short period of getting adjusted. I hope you beat it all! It's a very rewarding game

I remember watching "Adam Millard - The Architect of Games" just a year and a half ago and practically none of his videos were making traction. There were just 20-30 comments after 1+ week when he posted a video. Same with "Joseph Anderson" 2+ years ago. Daryl is slowly building his high-quality catalog of videos. UA-cam has a very strong positive feedback loop. There's people every day stumbling on a video or two that might make them subscribe or increase the chance that the algorithm will recommend him. His videos continue to be of great quality. It just takes time and sometimes a breakout hit, usually with a click-bait title and eye-catching thumbnail, before things really start moving. Daryl is on the right path. I hope he keeps doing a great job and has a good work-life balance.

That clip you showed about a minute in where he started singing with the music totally broke me. I suffer with memory issues due to PTSD, and VGM legitimately helps me with this. Traditional music (stuff you hear on the radio, for example) doesn't do it for me. A lot of my favourite themes are boss music and area themes (or level music for my older favourites, depending on the genre of game) because when I hear them, I'm reminded of, among many other things
- My first experiences hearing the music, which is often the most important, if it's something like a particularly difficult boss that I liked
- general themes (ie: "future") within each piece of music which can trigger a train of thought that gives me some artsy ideas
- the concept of childhood, which I feel robbed of due to my shitty memory
I'd give more specific examples but right now my whole core is shaken. This is a wonderful video discussing a topic that has always been extremely important to me.

I don't have any relatives with Alzheimer's or dementia and I was crying by the end of this video. I can't imagine how hard it is to have a loved one not recognize you and my heart goes out to anyone who is in that position, but it gives me great hope to see how much better understood these diseases are becoming.

12:46 this makes a lot of sense to me. I have dealt with depression and anxiety for a while. Last year I cured myself of this mental illness through diet. Recently I have been cheating and have been slipping back in. One of the oddest things happens to me while depressed. I lose the ability to retrieve words and phrases while talking to people. The strange thing about this is that I know what I want to say and I know that I have a word or phrase that can express what I want to say but I can't find the words. It's like in a feeling that needs to be expressed but parts of my brain are encrypted and I don't have access to the files.
Damn as soon as Undertale started playing it immediately brought me back to those snow days four years ago when I sat by the window experiencing the game for the first time,
I first got into Kingdom Hearts during a difficult time in my life, and it became my comfort. The thing that I could turn to when things were too rough to handle. It's really interesting to learn exactly why the music hits me so hard- it reminds me of times when the game was there for me, to offer an escape. Even though I'm not as into it anymore, each time I hear the music it calms me down. Thanks for offering a reason as to why. Keep making amazing videos!
One of my favorite soundtracks is the Pokémon Trading Card Game for the Game Boy. It’s so catchy and melodic and great background noise.

I think this is one of the reasons so many people have emotional attachment to Prelude from Final Fantasy, the intro song to Ocarina of Time, and the Halo theme. Music really is one of the most beautiful fundamentals of our world.
this made me cry. i remember secretly staying up late as a kid waiting for inuyasha to come on adult swim. that show & music and other games at that time really shaped my childhood. i get such an emotional response when i hear those tracks from time to time

Amazing video! I often experience this very strong nostalgia when listening to music that's remininscent of a certain period of my life, that I can't quite put into words when trying to explain, and for a few seconds I almost feel as if I was back in that time period.
This particular feeling is so important to me that it's my main inspiration when I make music.
So it's really great to see a video on the subject.

My grandmother passed earlier this year due to complications from dementia, so this video really hit home for me. Thank you for this beautiful video. I'd have to imagine that the most nostalgic soundtrack for elementary school is definitely Pokemon Diamond, and feel that later in life the Persona 5 soundtrack will make me the most nostalgic over life in high school. Although all this really just highlights why I'd love to be involved in sound design for video games. I love music, and would love to be able to make music that people feel nostalgic for, that someone will never forget.

You'll still enjoy the music even if it does remind you of depression. In the future you might think back on depression and that's nostalgia. You'll still enjoy the music no matter what to think of.
You'll remember healing your depression from hearing that music too. That's a happy memory to have.
Trust me, I can say from personal experience that depression *emphasizes* good memories of the music you're hearing.

The soundtrack for Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald will always send a chill down my spine and tears in my eyes, especially the music from the first couple towns and routes. Emerald was my favorite game as a kid and I loved it to death, I still remember my first shiny Pokemon was a Pelipper.
I found your channel tonight. I find that the music I love the most is the music that makes me the saddest. Things like Dearly Departed or the underwater theme from pokemon ruby and sapphire. Both of these soundtracks became important to me at a time when I felt these games were my only escape from terrible surroundings. They have even shaped my outlook as I have a tendency to be sad most of the time and find myself anxious often. Thank you for this. Learning is our greatest power.
On The Beach At Dusk from PMD2 gets me every time, each repeat of the track is in the same place but for a different point emotionally in the heroes' journey - the association between the characters bonding every time that piece plays and my childhood brain growing up alongside playing the game means that track brings me to happy tears every time I hear it. I wake up and turn this series of your videos on to help manage my mental emotional state because your clear and resonant voice, clearly well researched psychology, and your intrinsically easy to digest format help me keep calm enough to get through my morning routine without having a manic episode, and I have to thank you for that. Having something to go to or someone to listen to long enough to organize my thoughts is extremely important to having a good day for someone like me. Thank you for what you do, and I’d love to see more psych of play episodes in the future 😊
started watching avatar a little bit ago. when i first heard leaves from the vine, it really moved me. it was like i was hit with a form of future nostalgia, knowing that this would stick with me and become a cherished memory. and now whenever i hear it, even though it's only been a couple of weeks, it gives me a bittersweet feeling. this video helped me understand why exactly my brain likes to play it at 2 in the morning.
I feel like this is exactly what happens with old Wii Soundtracks, disney movies, and Minecraft music from when I was younger that I literally get so nostalgic from. There are also some songs that I memorized the lyrics for and I can smell my old homes as I listen to them. This also happens with smells by the way! When you drive through a forest open a window and play your favorite songs, it is worth it.

I know I'm late to the game here, 10 months late. But hey here I am now.
I am a board certified music therapist, and your video is.. 90% spot on! Very impressive video from someone who is not a professional in the field. It's clear you've done a lot of research and I really appreciate that. I feel like I'm really learning about other topics you've made videos on, because I can vouch that much of this video is accurate and up to date with our current understanding of music and memory.
Some points to add as someone who does this whole music and psychology thing for a living.
- Not an important point, but it's not "musical therapy" it's just, "music therapy." Very small minor point, not one I'll go majorly into unless someone is interested, on why music therapists generally vastly prefer the term "music therapy" over the former.
- Alive Inside is one of huge contention in the music therapy community. On one hand, we recognize that music is HUGELY powerful for many people, and clearly people like Henry were greatly benefited from the "Ipod project" as we put it. However, it is NOT an example of music therapy, or "musical therapy." It was clearly helpful for them, and I don't want to diminish the project's importance or take away the music. Music therapists do not *own* music and other people/projects are welcome to use it! But if you can imagine the huge benefits of slapping an ipod and headphones on a patient with dementia, imagine what a *board certified therapist* can accomplish with real processing afterward, cherry picked songs, as someone who studied and specialized in the field. I am not a walking ipod. My job is not to put an ipod on a patient. Too often, a real therapist is replaced with an ipod, and patients miss that opportunity for real therapy. And, most importantly, this program not run by a board certified music therapist CAN be dangerous. As you mentioned in your video, music is powerful, and just like it can help us encode memory and induce happiness, it can also induce great sadness, grief, trauma, loss, and many other difficult emotions. Too often we see with these ipod projects, patients are left with an ipod and left alone. Or left with a non-specialized professional to process emotions that could harm them. Particularly if that person has trauma, as many people do.

Minecraft music is perfect for a nostalgia trip, because it slowly fades into existence as you play, streamlining with the gameplay as you reach a sense of calmness as a memory is encoded until of course it stops, prompting you to realise after the songs finished what a beautiful moment you had just experienced.

So THAT’S why FFVII ost triggers almost immediate happiness and nostalgia in me! I also feel called out from that soundtrack being listed so early. I was two decades younger, then, where my most prominent memories molded me. Awesome video!
I just found this channel and am going through these videos and am absolutely loving the content thus far! I have a story that relates to this topic that you may find interesting. Long ago my uncle got into a terrible car accident and was in a coma. When he awoke he had amnesia to the point that he couldn't remember who anyone was or even his name. A couple days later, my grandfather brought my uncle his guitar and he started playing some Beatles songs. He couldn't remember pretty much anything at all but the music stayed with him. His memory did return but his mind never really recovered but to this day I can always talk about music with him.
Frog's theme always makes me weepy and overwhelmingly resolute. I could list more, but nothing else gets me worked up quite as consistently.
I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing during the pandemic as a way to relieve stress, and the in-game music for certain hours instantly soothes me when I hear it. Now I know why! Very fascinating video.

i will never ever forget the core b soundtrack from celeste. it was by far the most painful and gruelling level, but the music kept me at it despite how impossible the jumps looked. I died ~2000 times, and spent over 4 hours listening to it, so it is deeply ingrained in my memory.
This is actually pretty cool to see someone do research into this; since I have severe memory problems, and I've found music is one of the only ways I can reliably encode/retrieve memories properly

Honestly the two tracks that always get in my feels or caught up in my memories are the main theme from LOZ Link To The Past and then the Black Water them from Ratchet and Clank. It had so much funk and just an amazing beat. I can never resist either one of those songs

i almost started crying again because music has and always will hit close home. Even though I haven't played undertale, "his theme" made me filled with emotion.
And that's what I love about videogame music and music in general; you don't always need the context to feel emotions while listening to them. But it always adds on when you do.

I am working at a geriatric rehab clinic as an occupational therapist and i can only encourage you to write down things you liked during different periods of your life. It helps so much to interact with people suffering from dementia. It greatly increases their wellbeing and makes our job easier to connect with them.

I have to say, my favorite themes from video games have to have come from Super Smash Bros. Melee. So many hours for me were spent sitting with my brother as he beat me over and over again. But it wasn’t ever sad for me because I didn’t care about winning, I only cared about playing with my big bro. For me, the temple theme strikes me especially hard because so many hours were spent there laughing and having a good time. I will always miss those moments, but it’s the thought of forgetting them that I fear more. I’m sad that these moments are in the past for the most part, but I’m happy that they happened. And that is why I love video game music.

this really explains a lot for me. i have a lot of issues recalling most of my childhood due to trauma, but it's a lot easier for me to remember musicals like the little mermaid or singing in the rain than it is for me to remember non-musical media. even within my regular life, a lot of my memories are associated with some form of music, whether it's camping for an SCA event and listening to my dad play medieval-style music or playing mario kart with some friends in the basement while the adults play d&d upstairs (this memory is, for some reason, associated with "i want it that way" by the backstreet boys and not any music from mario kart itself. i have no idea why)
The announcement of splatoon 3 made me really happy and i revisited the soundtrack in splatoon 1 and just felt a lot of nostalgia, but the song that just made me remember a very happy time is the ika jamaica song which is the song for when you are waiting for players, when i listen to it i remember some late nights i had playing splatoon 1 while i was alone in my room and my brother on a party and it’s such an specific moment i remember but it makes me very happy to remember it and it feels like it was a long time ago bug it was almost 6 years ago

I will always remember Donkey Kong Country's Aquatic ambience... It reminds me of my 10 year old days when I was living in Florida. My dad was in the Navy and out to sea and my dad bought me this game before he left. It took me weeks to beat the game because there was no save point... I would cry when my mom told me to turn the game off and come eat dinner... After I spent 6 hours getting to King K Rool!! The water level with the swordfish brought me peace because I knew I could go use the bathroom and get food because it was like a half way point for me. I always enjoyed this song and its the most memorable song I know.. :)
I often listen to music and videos when playing games, and everytime I go back to those places where I played, I just remember the video or everytime I watch that video the same happened, I remembered what I did in the game.

I realized recently how I associate different pieces of music to experiences I had with them.
Over the summer, I asked my friend to send me at least 1 song every week, and she did. She'd usually send about 4 or 5 every week, and if I ever hear those songs again, I will instantly be reminded of her. I associate all of those songs with her.
3 months ago, in PE, I heard one of the songs she sent me. I couldn't remember the name of the song, but I instantly felt happy, and excited that I knew the song. For the last 3 months I had been occasionally trying to figure out the name of the song, and looking up the few lyrics from the chorus I could remember, but to no avail.
Yesterday, it played in PE again, and I actually heard the lyrics more clearly, including, the name of the song. It was an amazing experience. I finally knew the name of the song, and last night I listened to it again and got emotional, and almost teared up, looking back at those times when she would send me songs.
There's also one song from a Video Game, that I associate somewhat with her.
The moment that started the whole "sending songs" thing, was one time last May when I asked her what her favorite song was. She said she didn't have a favorite, but there was one she had in her head a lot recently, and what she sent me was a totally beautiful song that I think of very fondly.
Similarly, I didn't have a favorite song, but there was a song that had been in my head a lot recently, and it was "Moonlight Capital" from Kirby Triple Deluxe.
She ended up accidentally listening to a mashup video instead of the original, but still... That song is now somewhat associated with her. i also associate it with myself. It has barely anything to do with my character or personality, but it just stands out as a song that helps describe who I am. Over half a year later and I'm finding myself wanting to listen to the song, because of the emotions it brings out in me.
The way Music works in my life, and I'd assume other peoples' lives, is outstanding. I'm rarely ever happy. But songs can truly make me feel certain ways.

My great-grandma was going through something similar and she lit up when I visited her while playing the Pokemon theme (because that was the only thing I watched when she babysat me LOL) :')
