I wouldn't say it goes through that route, I'd guess it's that we ultimately have a strong tendency to 'biasedly' look for justifications on reality for our preconceptions of reality. What would strengthen our beliefs, making us act accordingly. Even to the point of subconsciously developing harmful symptoms. I'd say anxiety and panic attacks could have something to do with this, we're scared, so we may find (in other words fabricate) reasons on reality for our fear and panic, worsening the situation.
One time, back in high school, this guy in the locker room gave me a breath mint. After eating it he told me it was ecstasy. I started freaking out, thinking and feeling that I was getting high at my catholic high school. Turns out it was just a mint lol.
Yeah in high school my friend brought in brownies and told me they were pot brownies. We ate them in class and both had an amazing time, laughing and one of the best memories. My teacher of course didn’t believe anyone would so blatantly bring in pot brownies so just shrugged it off. Turns out they *were* pot brownies and the teacher thought we were just messing with him.
I saw the "pseudo tones" bit coming and it didn't hurt my ears, I also loved the lavender town creepy pastas. Now please give me my superior human medal
@@DarylTalksGames I felt an horrible pain in my hears when you talked about "pseudo-tones". One influenceable medal to me, one influential medal to you.
Daryl: "Here are some Psedo-Tones to listen to." Me: *listens to tunes* Daryl: "Haha. It's fake. There's no sounds." Me: *ears bleeding profusely* Yeah. Such bullshit. *eyes begin to bleed*
When your subconscious recognizes what's going on before you are, I was confused on why I heard nothing until I was told it's fake and the grey video was brought up
I’m not gonna lie I got legit scared when you told me that the “sound” you played was going to hurt me and I felt betrayed. And then you revealed it and we were cool.
there was a sound. it was extremely soft and subtle, but it carried a frequency relevant to the pseudo-tones he mentioned... i honestly wasnt expecting anything to affect me but 8:24 I had to stop the video there because i felt this sensation in my brain that was similar to hearing nails on a chalkboard... but still, i could barely hear anything until i started paying close attention to the audio in my headphones... (i transcribe music by ear as a hobby, so im sharp at catching minor details in sound.) it was a very quiet, yet sharp methodic beeping which was the singular set of tones in the intro to the lavender town theme put on repeat. with the right sound editing software, its possible to suppress the easily comprehensible frequencies (the tones we hear in music) while amplifying the "other ones" that the human brain cant comprehend and often misses because it is mainly only focused on the frequencies which it can comprehend. one reason why some people here had a reaction to something they could barely catch is because the editor isolated that tone from the base track and because that is a frequency which our brains have trouble to comprehend or "math out", it causes/can cause intense discomfort and dissonance both physically and emotionally. (this also explains why some people cant tolerate the sound of heavy metal, dubstep, or classical music. we're all different.) with a bit of googling you can learn how sound affects human neurology on multiple levels, such as binaural beats. though its a bit scary, the thought of someone with enough knowledge in neurology and skill in sound editing would be able to create a weapon with nothing but a sine wave or two...now imagine being able to sharpen that frequency even further. on another note, the reaction to the sound *was* also probably amplified due to what he was saying prior, which basically prepared our brains to feel incoming discomfort. the frequency triggered it, but the suggestion could have amplified the feeling due to the brain being notified to pay closer attention to itself. (Edit: corrected some vocabulary and added some extra info)
The pseudo tones that you claimed were playing didn't hurt my ears, however, I felt an uncomfortable intensity as if the pain I was supposed to feel transformed into it.
@@DarylTalksGames It was very strange to be noceboed, usually I'm not so affected by that stuff, so it knocked me on my ass when the pressure on my ears stopped and I realized I was fooled
Same... I know I can be very suggestible sometimes, but I definitely felt the uneasy feeling, and was annoyed when I then knew it was fake. Because why would my brain think it’s actually true?? The power of suggestion is super strong for whatever reason..
Not gonna lie, I am so fuckin proud of myself that when you started talking about the "pseudo-tones" and how they cause pain, I was just like "no...? they don't?" and that was that.
I was pretty relieved as soon as that started and I realized I wasn't feeling anything, because I'm very prone to audio-induced headaches that last the rest of the day, and I did not need that lol.
i was one of the "brave ones" that listened to lavender town when this mass hysteria was going on and my classmates were genuinely surprised i showed up the day after lmao i love the song to this day, brings back memories

I will admit, the first time I reached Lavender Town, I was unnerved by the music. Then, after entering the pokemon tower, I was shocked at the realization that pokemon died. It was like that moment when you are told and realize your pet is going to die someday and there is nothing you can do about it. I was days getting over that subtle trauma of that. Granted, I was about 10 and impressionable as hell.
"Headphone users be warned, this next bit could hurt your ears" Me: Okay, turning down my volume a bit just in case. ...and then Daryl kept going on and on about how it was going to hurt, and the more he said it, the more convinced I was that this was going to be about the nocebo effect, because it was suspicious how insistent he was about it being painful.
Didn't get the nocebo, but I was thinking "This video is about mass hysteria" from the set up. I did still feel a little on edge, so it "affected" me in that way, but I didn't think "this is pain". For more fun historical examples of mass hysteria, I encourage people to look up the actual, really happened "Dancing Plague", in which people danced to death uncontrollably in the 1500s, probably due to life stress including multiple crop failures in the region over several years.
another less exterme example comes from the book "Eleven Blue Men" where a school girl named 'Sandy'(pseudonym) feels light headed and vomits in choir practise. after she goes to the nurse more and more students get sick, then some teachers and other assistants. In the end amublances and fire trucks come after someone calls in a gas leak. but just like in the intro tale only 'Sandy' was ever really ill.
When you played the "pseudo-tones" I didn't feel anything that hurt, I just slowly got more unerved and paranoid like something bad was going to happen.
Man, this is a blast from the past. I remember this being one of the stories that got me deep into creepypasta stuff when I was younger, and even tho I knew it was fake, it still effects me - I don't get headaches, but it does give me some strong physical discomfort if I listen to it for too long. It's crazy how much power just the suggestion that something can affect you ends up, well, affect you, lol. And congrats on 100k, man! It's well deserved!

Same. Sometimes even today my eyes tear up for some reason when I listen to it. It's so fucking creepy. I'm not saying It's something supernatural tho. Obviously.
I remember in 5th grade I would just listen to Lavender Town on loop, my mom would get so annoyed because it actually hurt her ears. Meanwhile I was out here vibin to the song.
blooky for me it gets louder whenever I get close to an electronic device, it’s loudest whenever I get close to a battery-powered device. I had to throw out my furby because it made me throw up on it when I was 7 cause the noise got so annoying and loud lmao.
The hidden tones never get me because I cannot hear them for some reason, I rarely hear them due to the facts that I have experienced them before and it basically just destroyed my fear of it somehow. I don’t know if that made sense...
When I first heard of Lavender Town Syndrome, I got so scared. Not because of the actual song itself, but because of the rumours. I thought listening to it would make me kill myself. Whenever I heard it in the background of a video I immediately clicked off. I had heard it before and while it made me feel a bit uncomfortable but only a little bit. It didn't bother me. I'm fine with Lavender Town again now.
Why did you do It? You.... I'm so sorry that you didn't get the help you needed. But why did you hurt me like It? You pushed my head under the water of that lake. The first thing that l remember was the cold, wet sensation on my face. I remember how harshly you grabbed my hair to keep me underwater. I remember you kicking me in the chest. I remember you trying to strangIe me. I still have bruises on my neck. I remember watching the gray Sky over me wondering when It would end. I remember feeling my ribs breaking like glass. I remember you cutting off my ring finger with those rusty big blades. I remember you showing me my wedding ring. I remember you shooting me in my stomach. @@linebeckland83 Jesus did not die at 3 am, he died close to night and was placed in a tomb where he spent 3 days and in the third day he was resurrected in the morning.
So, at the "pseudo-tones" part there was some quiet game music playing, but there was also a very obvious obnoxious (but not outright painful) high-pitched noise playing, both of which got increasingly louder as the timer went on. So, although there's no such thing as "pseudo-tones" there was definitely an annoying high-pitched tone playing, which I find it interesting no one seems to have commented on.
Yeah! When he started playing that my eyes started constantly going in and out of focus, then again i was in focusing super hard the second he played it so it could just be my own brain :/
Same, on one side I’m mad for falling for it but on the other I’m just fascinated that it worked so easily, I kind of want to show it to everyone I know just to see their reaction
I'll be honest, I never had any of the "symptoms" of the lavender town syndrome, but I loved (and still love) the idea behind it. Its just something about there being such an eerie idea from a children's video game that gets me. Something on the outside seeming so innocent, but hiding a dark secret.
Thanks for talking about this ‼ I was diagnosed with conversion disorder and PNES (psychogenic non epileptic seizures) . My neurologists say that they stem from extreme stress due to my chronic ptsd causing flashbacks and night terrors , panic disorder causing panic attacks and being on the autistic spectrum causing high sensitivity to stimuli etc. ● After years of suffering from seemingly random partial and grand mal seizures I got answers. The symptoms were so debilitating , they made it impossible for me to; attend school, work, and made me even more fearful than I was already to leave my house. in general. The only way the doctors could give a solid diagnosis , was after I completed a 48-84 hour seizure and sleep study. ● If anyone is having seizure symptoms I'd highly recommend that test, because many seizure conditions cannot be read by a simple EEG machine, unlike epileptic seizures, and they are not allowed to diagnose anything non epileptic without that specific type of testing. The study was certainly not super comfortable since they induce seizures by any means necessary, but I'm so glad I did it because the info has proven to be valuable to me finding any kind of relief . Sorry this is so long, I ramble and this really is a huge part of my life and wanted to share any info I have about it to help others who may be interested or suffering. ❤
Interesting.. I was diagnosed with CPSTD as an adult from severe abuse when I was a kid and I had petite Mal seizures when I was still young and hadn't come out with what happened yet. I'm curious why it causes very real issues in our brains like this. Imma go dig around in science but have you been told why yet?
I've read that elevated adrenaline can cause non epileptic seizures. I also know that stimulant drugs can cause seizures as well, so it follows that with PTSD, a trigger that induces high stress hormones could have a role in causing seizures. Have you ever read a book called The Body Keeps the Score? It talks about how PTSD physically affects your body. I haven't read it personally (waiting on the library) but I've had it recommended to me by other people with PTSD.
Hey there! Delayed response, but for reference, you actually can have a diagnosis of nonepileptic spells or conversion disorder without significant testing. Currently, the clinical diagnosis of these conditions can actually be satisfied by the presence of positive symptoms (that is the presence of symptoms) that are non-pathologic. The idea that non-epileptic events and conversion require ruling out other conditions has been pushed out of favor in recent years. That said, often times we will get additional tests because our patients (and some doctors tbh) would feel more comfortable with the confirmation, which is reasonable. There's sort of an art to the diagnosis and importantly the discussion of these kinds of conditions.
@@tropezando That makes a lot of sense about the elevated adrenaline and stress hormones ! I have "hot flashes" that are not at all "flashes"😑💨 (they can last around 5-10 hours) and when I've done very general bloodwork, my hormone levels come back normal. Its awful and so frustrating because I'm talking *hot* like POURING constant drops of sweat from my head mainly . It's become pretty bad and hard to deal with especially when I have to go out. It started to get even worse after I had my second child. More of a reason why I think its all hormonal. 🤷♀️ Makes sense about stimulants too, that's why I can't even drink much coffee in a day without feeling super jumpy! 😆 When I got my seizure testing done, before the actual study began, I went thru a lot of other tests. One of which was a reflex test. When the nurse first struck my knee, she jumped back and said "wow you have very strong reflexes! I've never seen someone respond like you! " 🤭 I am admittedly very jumpy and so many noises and triggers make my heart feel like it gets jolted by ⚡lightning . I often say my body feels like there is an underlying electric current going thru it. In my history, Only sedating prescriptions like; benzodiazapines, muscle relaxers, and sedating pain medications have helped bring that feeling down. However, the side effects from most of those medications have been too much for me and I end up asking to be taken off them. Not sure what to do about it presently tbh. Oh and YES I HAVE heard of that book a while ago. I haven't read it yet, I had forgotten about it! Thank u for reminding me! ☺👍
@@grodon909 oh wow, thank you for the response! I realize, I had the conversion disorder diagnosis beforehand but got the PNES diagnosis afterwards. That makes sense that sometimes they just want to get some more information and recorded evidence of the episodes , but don't need it to give a diagnosis everytime. I was lucky enough that my mother could watch my kids at that time, otherwise I don't know how I would've been able to stay there so long!
Also I heard this caused porygon and it’s evolutions to never appear in the anime again Which is a shame because it was pikachu that cause the attack which lead to the flashing, and it could have been easily fixed by slowing down the flashing (or have the scene dimmed)
OK I MAy or may not try and listen to the song *aka which I did* and WELL- I was thinking of overdose and did get headaches. and I can go and overdose myself easily because all of us in my family take meds. WARNING DONT DO IT-
It really comes down to "we want to happen" we need to add some sort of meaning to everything. we pin a horrifying reason onto why this loud and high-pitched chiptune song gives us a headache, rather than accept the fact that it might just be because the original lavender town theme is loud, high-pitched and annoying, especially since the volume button was so hard to find on the original gameboy.
Watched laurenzside today & I was confused when she said "I'm scared of lavender town " because I'd never heard of this so I thought she was scared of the UA-cam channel lavender Towne lol
In the pseudo-tones part my arms started tingling as soon as the timer started. I was immediately like "woah okay i don't know if I can watch anymore." I decided to watch a little more and it started getting worse. I got a very slight headache but then... he said it wasn't real. I laughed to myself as my headache dissapeared.

@@DarylTalksGames I don't think it's the brain at fault here, it's the mind - our consciousness. Has anyone ever tried to nocebo some animals? Bet you 20 Platinum Trophies that it's impossible. It's because we think too hard about shit that we get fooled by mere illusions.
@@bingo784 nocebo depends on social assumptions (i.e. if a doctor says that something's gonna hurt, you'll probably believe it) so testing it on animals is kinda hard
Oh. That's an interesting point. I would've never thought of it. I myself have no problem breathing with a face mask, but it does get uncomfortably hot in there.
Yes, it's psychological. I thought at first too, but I realized I would have to cope with it anyways so then poof gone where what I thought were consequences of wearing a face mask. The worst is that you tell other people this that they are not breathing correctly (they are usually hyperventilating, or breathing too much with their mouths) and that's why they think they have symptons. When they don't. If you breathe through your nose correctly and you stop believing that then you won't have anything.
i remember walking about the local grocery store just fine with a mask on for upwards of like 10 minutes, but the second i start thinking about breathing it becomes hard and my nose gets itchy, etc etc. it's pretty ridiculous that you can do something just fine but as soon as you realize you're doing it, you're now breathing and swallowing manually.
The nocebo thing reminds me of how my friend took new meds and the doctor didn't tell her about weird side effects because he didn't want it to go to her head. So while she was taking an exam, her arm just kind of stopped working and she couldn't move it. When she looked up side effects for her medication, the arm not moving was listed and she was so pissed at her doctor
Me: listening to the nocebo sound section My tinnitus: Jokes on you, I already have high pitched and faintly audible sounds on the edge of my hearing 24/7!
It only really happens to me in absolute silence. Still, it's absolutely maddening and I have to make noises myself to stop it. Take care of your hearing, kids.
I remember being in middle school and watching TheGamerFromMars's video on Lavender Town. I thought that it was the coolest and creepiest thing I'd ever seen, and I ended up watching it at least ten times in a short period because it was *that cool* (to small me). It's crazy how people can get hooked on stuff just because it might be true.
When I played Yellow way back in the 90s, I thought I could be brave and fight the ghost head-on, like they were just another enemy. When I got there, the game didn't even acknowledge the possibility of combat. The ghost just started taunting me with words. I screamed in terror and turned off my gameboy lmao
You know what's way more unsettiling than any creepypasta? The "illusionary truth" effect and it's implications in the context of political discourse, public narrative and child upbringing/education...
::raises hand:: i actually didnt hear anything and didnt get a headache. lol i was wondering why i wasnt. Now admittedly i have ringing in my ears all the time, and after you told me that thing started, the ringing got way louder, but i think that was because i was consciously trying to hear more. With the pseudo tones bit, I physically braved myself for it. Then I felt something in my ears. And I was expecting it to get worse. And then it just didn’t. Then I realized there wasn’t any pain to begin with
I have been diagnosed with FND, which used to be called Conversion Disorder. Thank you for including it in the video! I'm really happy it's becoming more well-known.
this video was really interesting to find at this point in my life, because im actually experiencing the same thing as the girls who seemed to be "catching" tourettes. i started watching sweet anita about six months ago, started getting tics after less than a week, and now i have a full fledged tic disorder. my friend, after being exposed to my tics for a few months, has a tic disorder now too. i know a lot of people wont believe me, but those girls absolutely were not faking. its strange, but with the added stress of being in high school while all that was going on, i can definitely understand why so many people would develop tics.
I was dating a boy with a lazy tongue so it kinda sounded like he was slurring sometimes, eventually i started talking that way too. It's been about 4 months and it still comes up when I'm yelling which is hella annoying lol
I've never experienced anything than a vague sense of unease while listening to the Lavender Town music, and that's just because the song is naturally unsettling. But that's because I never played Pokemon, and I was homeschooled. By the time I was introduced to if, it was purely a scary story on the internet with absolutely no truth to it. The effect has never worked on me, because I never believed anything would happen in the first place.
props for actually taking the time to explain what mass hysteria is, how it works, how it spreads, and why humans experience it (as an information hazard, a thought hazard, the need to learn about something that might be scary or a threat and share that information even if it is false or flies in the face of what is normally known to be true) I hate people explaining every freaky phenomenon as 'mass hysteria' we need more people to explain the freaky phenomenon OF mass hysteria, because being so convinced you're ill that you suffer physical or psychological harm itself is scarier than all the spoopy folktales that have historically caused the psychogenic illness.
2:07 what? Thats not how I remember the story It wasn't "some gruesome suicide" it was just a headache and collapsing death Which is more realistic given that I try playing ruby and sapphire a while back and the sounds were unbearable I couldn't continue playing it after the 3rd Gim Which is odd cause I use to like the sounds as a kid but now they are so high pitch is head pain inducing
It took over the internet so much that different variations of the story came up, mostly from the different summaries that would preface videos for transparency's sake. as for the music being painful to listen to, there is the evolution of technology to consider. That used to be the best we could get out of a game, but now we have soundtracks that are recorded with a live orchestra and conveyed almost as well as being present in the room where it happened.
Cullen Latham that’s a good point- the music sounded great when it was the only thing available, but we’re kind of spoiled today with impressive orchestrated scores in many video games, so it isn’t surprising that we’d expect more from and possibly be annoyed by an old game’s basic chiptune soundtrack lol
Are you talking about Red and Blue because that's were Lavender Town is from. Or else you were talking about Ruby and Sapphire and I'm guessing it was all the trumpets.
There's something in philosophy that a lot of conspiracy theories fall victim to, it's called "inductive reasoning". You may recognize its brother, "deductive reasoning". However, unlike deductive, inductive reasoning isn't what we call "necessarily valid". This isn't the same thing as "sound" - we'll revisit this later. A conclusion is necessarily valid if it fits within the confines of the premises it derives from. For instance: If all Greeks are philosophers and Socrates was Greek, then Socrates was a philosopher. Now this isn't a SOUND conclusion because it has a flaw in one of its premises: all Greeks aren't philosophers. However, it is VALID because it takes the premises and draws a conclusion that fits within the parameters they have set. Deduction is what's called "Bottom up" logic - it takes a set of rules and develops a conclusion from those rules. Induction is called "top down" logic - it takes a conclusion and develops a parameter from it. For instance, if you see a swan in a lake and realize that you've only ever seen white swans, you might induce that "All swans are white". Now this MAY BE SOUND, but is not necessarily valid: you don't have all of the data necessary to create a premise yourself. When people have gaps in what they know, inducement is a VERY TEMPTING option - it offers the ability to synthesize answers, but those answers aren't necessarily valid. They offer an explanation, but what they don't mention is that that explanation is logically not one that they have the propensity to draw.
I get that this stuff is fun but the amount of adults taking creepy pastas seriously is a bit worrying. I have never heard the music and first time hearing of this, I always knew(when I was younger like 5-6 years ago when I was 12-14 yrs old)that creepy pastas and shit like that were fake, I never really believed stories like that, where I live internet culture really started in 2010-2014 and I doubt any human in my city has seen a Gameboy irl so that might also be why I haven't heard of this, I live in Iraq and the us invasion really put us fucking years behind technology wise
I mean, the headaches I 100% believe, those old gameboy speakers were god awful, I still play even Pokemon Shield muted because of how awful it was in those early days
Honestly feels like a lot of old creepypastas misused it. It's not "being chased by a monster or entity or zombie" scary, it's more of a feeling of rotting. "watching a timelapse of a deer with a broken leg twitching, dying, and decomposing away to bones" is the vibe it gives me and that's the best way I can put it into words. It's really well composed and uses the Gameboy's limited sound chip to its advantage.
I dont get it. During that whole Psuedo tones thing, the high pitched sound in the background DEFINITELY exists and it 100% was uncomfortable. I mean..it didnt hurt, but it was pretty uncomfortable. ...my brain isnt making that high pitched sound up..its literally in the video. I can rewind the video after knowing the whole "Bit" and still hear it and still think "wow that sound is uncomfortable". is that not the same thing as "painful"?
I heard that as well. A high pitched tone like the ones used in those sound grenades that were popular awhile ago. Guess it was meant to sell the bit? It was really uncomfortable.

same lol
what is it ? edit: ouch my ears edit2 : now i have an headache edit3 : WUT THERE WAS NO FRICKING SOUNDS ????????? but WWWWWWWAAAAAAATTTTT
there was a sound. it was extremely soft and subtle, but it carried a frequency relevant to the pseudo-tones he mentioned... i honestly wasnt expecting anything to affect me but 8:24 I had to stop the video there because i felt this sensation in my brain that was similar to hearing nails on a chalkboard... but still, i could barely hear anything until i started paying close attention to the audio in my headphones...

Thanks for talking about this ‼
I was diagnosed with conversion disorder and PNES (psychogenic non epileptic seizures) .
Makes sense about stimulants too, that's why I can't even drink much coffee in a day without feeling super jumpy! 😆
When I got my seizure testing done, before the actual study began, I went thru a lot of other tests.

This made me think that people that claim to have difficulty breathing when wearing facemasks might have those symptoms for similar reasons.

When she looked up side effects for her medication, the arm not moving was listed and she was so pissed at her doctor
Me: listening to the nocebo sound section
My tinnitus: Jokes on you, I already have high pitched and faintly audible sounds on the edge of my hearing 24/7!
Same with me. It sucks so much :(
It only really happens to me in absolute silence. Still, it's absolutely maddening and I have to make noises myself to stop it. Take care of your hearing, kids.
Wait, is it not normal to have slight high-pitched tones in your head when it's quiet?
@@boxcarz I don't think so, at least from the lookin' that I've done on the internet. If it ain't well I still have tinitus.
Dya Volo i have that too, ive just had it for so long it seems normal lmao. i didnt know it was called that lmao
This made me think about the House MD episode about "hysteria" on the plane
ohhh the episode where they all think they have meningitis?
I mean, that's essentially what gaslighting is, isn't it?
Daryl: says the theme for lavender town gives you a syndrome
Also Daryl: *plays theme anyway*
suffer followers, I know you'll come back for more
::raises hand:: i actually didnt hear anything and didnt get a headache. lol i was wondering why i wasnt.
Now admittedly i have ringing in my ears all the time, and after you told me that thing started, the ringing got way louder, but i think that was because i was consciously trying to hear more.
Though lavender town theme always sounded strange to me, which it was supposed to be.
there was a high pitched sound that got louder, but nothing that should literally hurt
Almost certainly, you were attending more to the existing stimulus because of the prompt, making you more aware of it.
tinnitus gang!
I think you have tinnitus
LOL I didn't feel anything but some ringing but I think it's the high pitched noise
I don't even play video games but the way you involve psychological concepts is so engaging and thrilling, I'm subbed anyway.
Every time I hear the words “lavender” or “lavender town” I hear the song in my head all the time.
Me too lol
I forgot the song haha noobs
With the pseudo tones bit, I physically braved myself for it. Then I felt something in my ears. And I was expecting it to get worse. And then it just didn’t. Then I realized there wasn’t any pain to begin with
I thought this was about “LavenderTowne” the UA-camr-
Same I was so confused
Me too I was like "oh no"
YES ME TOO
Lol same
You're not alone
@@karabartley wow that's so interesting but it makes sense! human brains are weird and tend to pick up weird things from other human brains too lol
This, sir, is a cinematic masterpiece. Edge of my seat. Well done.
Not past the title comment: A contagion of thought perhaps? A Meme.
The DNA of the soul
@@demianporquese41 How about "full of shit" , is that a meme?
memes, Jack
Actually, yeah. Lavender Town has spread memetically and some people were getting the nocebo effect
@yo yo i know,I was referencing a quote
when you were talking about pseudo sounds, my jaw started feeling heavy, and my heart beat so fast that i felt it. freaky.
and I lost my focus reading comments and noticed nothing. the brain is so interesting
Uh definitely get a second or third opinion on any future diagnosis lmfaooo
I've never experienced anything than a vague sense of unease while listening to the Lavender Town music, and that's just because the song is naturally unsettling. But that's because I never played Pokemon, and I was homeschooled. By the time I was introduced to if, it was purely a scary story on the internet with absolutely no truth to it. The effect has never worked on me, because I never believed anything would happen in the first place.
props for actually taking the time to explain what mass hysteria is, how it works, how it spreads, and why humans experience it (as an information hazard, a thought hazard, the need to learn about something that might be scary or a threat and share that information even if it is false or flies in the face of what is normally known to be true)
I hate people explaining every freaky phenomenon as 'mass hysteria'
we need more people to explain the freaky phenomenon OF mass hysteria, because being so convinced you're ill that you suffer physical or psychological harm itself is scarier than all the spoopy folktales that have historically caused the psychogenic illness.
2:07 what? Thats not how I remember the story
It wasn't "some gruesome suicide" it was just a headache and collapsing death
Which is more realistic given that I try playing ruby and sapphire a while back and the sounds were unbearable I couldn't continue playing it after the 3rd Gim
Which is odd cause I use to like the sounds as a kid but now they are so high pitch is head pain inducing
*cough cough* volume off *cough cough*
The story I got told is that these kids got depressed and killed themselves. There are probably a bunch of variations of this internet campfire story.
Are you talking about Red and Blue because that's were Lavender Town is from. Or else you were talking about Ruby and Sapphire and I'm guessing it was all the trumpets.
I’ve been recommended this video for like a week now so I’m finally watching it
_"Is this Creepypasta real? or just an elaborate hoax? You decide."_
People who got the reference are awesome
This sounds so familiar yet I cant remember where it's from
@@MarzaButTube Same and I'm uncomfortable now-
Katastrophic Arts it’s epic rap battles of history
It is a hoax but the music is very scary though
Like, are there grown adults with jobs out there that truly believe the lavender town tune is evil and made people sick or have a seizure Or something? ... wait a minute, that one episode of Pokémon did give some seizures.. but that was an accident! Lol
Thank you for being the 1st common sense comment I’ve seen btw lol.
@@ZeranZeran ah you're very sweet!! and yeah, adults can fall victim to this kind of stuff pretty easily as well - it's certainly an alluring thing to be able to say "i know the truth and you don't"
That intro story had me extremely intrigued because I do have tourettes so I knew right off the bat that is wasn't "spreading" but had no clue what it was.
Also while I've never been adversely affected by lavender town's music, I did once get a pain in my stomach after listing to the River Twygz Bed theme from Super Paper Mario that went away after a few minutes of turning the song off.
Edit: here is the song for those who haven't played SPM.

wait when was this supposedly a big thing? i've literally never heard of it
Me neither
Were you around the internet during the early to mid 2010s? I remember it being very popular around that time. Even if you weren't too much into horror stuff, if you had watched just a single video that was slightly spooky, that "Lavender Town Syndrome" was bound to pop up in your recommendations. It was also quite the topic in forums, which is how I found it.
I feel old now
it was huge around 2010/11 but it was very niche. it was huge in its respective community but not everyone knew about it
Tbh I really believed the tones ware gonna hurt. But then they didn't. So I was like yo wtf-
16:17, I don't usually enjoy giving the UA-cam algorithm credit, but we can really give a shoutout to it for recommending me this great channel.
Sometimes, it really does just work.
I honestly never even heard of this, but now, assuming I'd still watch this video afterwards, I kinda wish I had.
How tf? How young are you?
me too; I never heard about this "lavender town" stuff before this video (and I spend a not healthy amount of time in the Internet)
It makes me feels old thinking that some people weren't around on the internet 10 years ago
I'm 19 and I've never heard of it either lmao
@@benjaminshields9421 dude couldve been from another country
When you were talking about pseudo-tones, I was like, "Daryl, that ringing is just my tinnitus."
I have never heard the music and first time hearing of this, I always knew(when I was younger like 5-6 years ago when I was 12-14 yrs old)that creepy pastas and shit like that were fake, I never really believed stories like that, where I live internet culture really started in 2010-2014 and I doubt any human in my city has seen a Gameboy irl so that might also be why I haven't heard of this, I live in Iraq and the us invasion really put us fucking years behind technology wise
you spelled liberation wrong
@@arnnied you don't know shit about that
@@c_brigante that was a joke
oh, so its like when someone gets hit in the nuts, suddenly all the guys fall over in pain
The nacebo affect reminds me of when someone says they need to use the bathroom and and you immediately feel the urge to go to the bathroom and pee.
dope, your nocebo made me feel a lingering headache even after you told us it was a nocebo, good job
I can rewind the video after knowing the whole "Bit" and still hear it and still think
"wow that sound is uncomfortable".
is that not the same thing as "painful"?
I heard that as well. A high pitched tone like the ones used in those sound grenades that were popular awhile ago. Guess it was meant to sell the bit? It was really uncomfortable.
Yeah after checking it several times, it does in fact exist which is kinda stupid, and yes it was actually kind of painful.
Yeah I can hear the sounds but they don’t hurt at all
Zhadow it was speed up Pokémon music
Well yeah I didn’t feel pain I was just really uncomfortable
No pain, had no idea where you were going with it. I liked the "pseudo-tone" noise quite a bit!
