  • Not much going on for the Winter 2022 season of anime. In this video, I move forward... towards an anime that's going to start airing again during the Fall 2022 season... an anime that was once on top of the world-Bleach.
I refused to pick up Bleach for the longest time. Of course, this was until I saw how hyped Bleach’s Thousand-Year Blood War Arc Trailer was… and found out Yoruichi is in it too (shoutout to Vinnie Hacker). I debated just doing a Bleach Trailer Reaction, because that’s what’s trending right now, but that doesn't really fit this channel lol.
Today, I take a quick look at why I also think you should give Bleach a chance-ignoring the details of the story. I specifically look at Bleach from a historical perspective to discuss why Bleach’s position as one of the OGs makes it worth starting in 2022. This video also has to be my cleanest edited essay up-to-date, so come watch some heat 🔥!

I really enjoy the “hidden depth” of bleach. Kubo has this way creating a simultaneously casual and deep story so that fans can enjoy however they want. He doesn’t spoon feed. Moreover, even his handling of the most generic shounen tropes has a lot of individuality and soul to it.

To those who haven't experienced Bleach yet, READ Bleach first then watch the anime. A lot of stuff had been watered down in the anime. Basically, the only reason you should see the anime is because of the soundtrack. The soundtrack is one of the bests in all of anime. Skip the filler episodes and arcs for a much much better experience. As a Bleach fan ever since 2008, I had to endure the weekly release of new episodes which makes it really really disappointing especially if what they will release is a filler episode.

Personally, I think the best way to go is to watch some of the anime first, at least one episode a day, and then go read the chapters that the episode(s) adapted afterwards. That way you get to keep up with both versions and the advantages/differences each has over the other instead of just waiting till you finish one version. I also just think that reading the manga first would set your expectations too high for the anime. I also just enjoy anime over manga in general. I prefer seeing these things animated, in color, and with sound, but unless I’m not that interested or the anime is considered to be vastly superior to the manga, I know I’d be missing out on something if I stick to just one version.

I would say the God tier artstyle, attention to visual detail and expressions, the style, poetry at the beginning of every volume, small doddle at the end of every chapter that adds to the story is what makes bleach stand out from other shounen. You could feel an individual voice of the author on the panels. Also the anime OST, Bleach has one of the if not the best OST off all time.

I can see that in Bleach, in fact, the depth Kubo put in is very subtle that a lot of people miss it.
A very interesting instance of this is in the world building, some details of how their universe functions can only be identified through contexrual inference. For example, did you know that Bleach's worlds is vaguely similar to Buddhism cosmology, constituting different realms for different beings, where the human world is the human realm, soul society is the demi-god realm, the plane where the soul king resides is the god realm, hueco mundo is the hungry ghost realm, the realm where Komamura is supposedly from could be the animal realm, and hell is the hell realm and its many sub realms.

Great video man! My only other response besides that would be to say it feels like you undersell the series a bit. I don’t think it’s a super casual read, or as casual a read you made it out to be, and honestly I wish more people took their time with it.
Of all the Shonen I’ve seen, Bleach handles it’s lore, themes and foreshadowing with a kind of grace that is a lot more poetic than most Shonen have to offer. The subtle foreshadowing of Ichigo’s Quincy heritage from the first couple of chapters, the obvious use of rain and water as a motif for Ichigo’s depression, to even the last arc where Byakuya’s character arc comes full circle. While yes Bleach is a product of its genre in some ways, Bleach is, at its best, a deeply refreshing take on storytelling through manga. This is also not me being negative at all I’m just excited to respond to such a dope content creator talking about my favorite series!

"Bleach handles it’s lore, themes and foreshadowing with a kind of grace that is a lot more poetic than most Shonen have to offer" You are delusional. It seems like it's only Bleach fanboys who overthink the series and think it's some hidden masterpiece. When actually it's nothing special and relies on mindless action to keep it going. The storytelling in the show is very amateurish.

    • @gregllo424
      @gregllo424 2 роки тому +11

Yea i agree as well. I rewatched and Reread bleach and realized it was masterfully crafted. Almost every character gets fleshed out, the themes in the story are executed perfectly, the dynamics between characters are crazy too. Ichigo's journey is insane, Aizen ideology and characterization are some of the best for an antagonist I've ever seen in shounen.
I would compare bleach to a poem. You have to reread/watch to fully understand it's profound meaning. Kubo writes in an implicit way and most if not all of the depth flies over peoples head. His themes of death, fear, courage, and self acceptance are executed perfectly throughout the arcs imo.

I must also say that Bleach is the best story I have ever seen. In Naruto you have an amazing world history, in one piece you get awesome world building, but in Bleach... there are the most well-written characters (you can figure out what the character is about only by their abilities) and the most serious philosophic questions I have ever heard. "Do we fight in order to gain more power or do we gain more power in order to fight? I haven't figured it out yet" is something I have been thinking about every day since I watched it.

It's definitely interesting to hear people's opinions on 'old' anime and manga. I think it's important to remember that the golden age of Japanese animation is considered to be the 80s by many people. Some of Ghibli's best films were released before I was born, and it's unlikely that we'll ever see anime films with the attention to detail that Akira and Ghost in the Shell displayed with their hand drawn art. Take a look at modern anime films and you're going to 'animation' of roughly the same quality, just with more 'modern' art ... and a lot of poorly implemented CGI.
Not to say that modern anime films are bad by comparison, but It's a stark reminder that by the 80s almost all of the core principles of animation that are still used in hand drawn animation to this day has already been in use for DECADES.
They only reason that so many TV anime from before the 2006 appear 'dated', is because of:
    A. The different apsect ratio
    B. The number of experinced animators available
    C. The medium of cell animation being much harder to work with than the more forgiving digital animation of the 2000s
    D. A lack of prominence in digital effects (although they were there)
    E. Time
    F. Budget
    G. People-power
... do those last three sound familiar? These are all issues that still plauge the industry today...
If you take the Bleach tv series as an example, it's animation and art on a week-to-week basis is likely better than shows like Black Clover and Dragon Ball Super and the average 12 episode anime series on average, and this was at a time when the studio was funnelling all of it's resources into Naruto (which might be why Bleach looks noticeably worse than Naruto early on). The only real difference is that the resolution is higher today... and that studios are applying 'industrial filters' to their art, something which was not as widely available at the time of Bleach's release. If you were to take an old 4:3 episode of Bleach, crop it to 16:9, then apply a modern filter to it, it would look like any other show released in the past 5 years (just with a more interesting art style, like how Jojo, Dragon Ball Super, One Piece and Demon Slayer are novelties today).
As for stories iterating on each other and getting progressively better with time... I want to remind people that if you go on over to DBZIMRAN or Mr.Tommo2304's channels you can find character analysis videos of individual Bleach characters that are up to 50 minutes long, not because they're stretched out unnecessarily, but because there's actually just too much packed into each individual character to discuss in 10 minutes or less.

Bleach was (and still is) one big topic of conversation I have with one of my best friends, it literally made at least half of all of our interactions, and we incorporated so many references of Bleach in our inside jokes that Bleach feels part of my life for the almost half the entire time I've been alive now.
Of course that is just my experience and won't be felt by someone that picks Bleach to read or watch it now, and even more now that's all finished, because of the constant raising and answering of questions that Bleach had, have been definitively the big pull to start conversations, making theories about how the story was going to progress every week was awesome.
And I would say that Bleach is like a Country. If you were raised on Bleach, you will be pissed off when people talk shit about Bleach, but you will always be talking shit about Bleach too.

Oh man I love bleach to me it's an amazing series and the best I've ever read I love watching videos or reading some more of this series over and over again to learn something new for example I watched DBZimran bring up these points and I expanded upon them, throughout each arc there is a theme to which Ichigo's character goes through which to me makes him the best and most realistic character.
    1) Substitute Shinigami Arc.
For this arc Ichigo goes through the theme of death. throughout the whole first arc we see Ichigo trying to overcome the depression he has due to the death of his mother. we see this when Ichigo goes to the cemetery to go see his mother's grave when he defeats grand Fisher and it is after he defeats grand Fisher that he is able to overcome his depression as well as his mother's death.
    2)Soul Society Arc.
In this arc the theme Ichigo goes through is the theme of resolve. throughout this arc Ichigo goes through impossible odds to overcome. And for every person Ichigo fights he learns something that he needs to keep under his belt of he's gonna want to progress to save Rukia from her execution. Ikkaku: his Ability, Renji: His will to keep moving and Kenpachi: his strength. This is what Ichigo needs in order to keep moving throughout the soul society to bypass there harsh laws.
    3)Arrancar Saga
The theme that Ichigo goes through is fear. Throughout this entire arc Ichigo is constantly afraid of what might happen to his friends if the Arrancar might get to them, what might happen if Sosuke Aizen has made it back to Karakura Town while he's not there, and especially of what might happen if the hollow inside takes over him and what'll happen if he gets his way and "becomes king."
    4)Fullbringer arc.
The Fullbringer arc represent's Ichigo's loss and it also shows when Ichigo is most relatable within the series. It shows how Ichigo has to deal with the loss of his Shinigami powers after his battle against Aizen and how he doesn't want that feeling to get to his friends. It shows how he deals with having the chance to regain his Shinigami powers with the help of a group called Xcution after he wasn't able to protect his sister once she was taken hostage by a hollow and he couldn't do a thing to help her only to get betrayed by the group which he thought he could call allies were his enemies who were only trying to take his overwhelming power who in the end were defeated due to Ichigo finally able to attain his power once more thanks to old friends.
    5)Finally the TYBW ARC.
    **SPOILERS**
The final arc of the series represents the theme of truth like the fact that Ichigo isn't who he thought he was and that the Quincy may still live on, his zanpakuto isn't what he seemed and that he may not have been the cause of his mother's death. In this arc Ichigo must face that his zanpakuto was actually a man named Juha Bach who is the source of his Quincy power as well as the father to all Quincy and that his mother was a Quincy as well which explains why Ichigo had absorbed all of Rukia's spiritual pressure when she had offered it to him in the beginning of the series because Quincy have the ability to absorb reishi from all things. The reason why he has this power is due to his mother being a Quincy as well and his mom may not have died due to the grand Fisher but because yhwach had used the auswhalen which immediately kills all non pure-blooded Quincy on the spot.
This is why personally Ichigo to me is amongst the best and most realistic character in all of Shonen cause like him we have to go through all of these and while yes other protagonist's go through this as well the way that it's handled in bleach is amazing and done right. He's not just some nonchalant depressed guy. So brief little recap.
    Substitute Shinigami Arc=Death
    Soul Society=Resolve
    Arrancar Saga=fear
    Fullbringer arc=Loss
    TYBW ARC=truth

When he fights the 103 arrancar (I forgot his name) it's an introduction to how ruthless and non forgiving the savages in hueco mundo are. Then his fight with grimmjow truly shows instinct
Once he accepts some of his hollow "instinct" and orihime isn't afraid of him anymore, he defeats grimmjow. Their character dynamic/rival is a whole other discussion. But once he learns some of this instinct he realizes part of him did want to fight grimmjow.

It's titled bleach because bleach Whitens anything it comes into contact with.
In the spiritual playground bleach lives in, the "bleaching" is what ichigo goes through. His multi colored soul (human, hollow, shinigami, quincy) is eventually melded all into the white of his hollow form-- which he adopts into his own form.
Remember his hollow form was originally black, and through its exposure to ichigos mother snd then to ichigo himself-- it turns into a very dominant white. The rest of ichigos power, soul. and life all bleach's into white over the course of the story.

Maybe this is my call to finally get around to reading Bleach :)
As for my favourite manga, it's Oyasumi Punpun. It's a bizarre and chaotic coming-of-age story following Punpun represented as a poorly drawn cartoon bird among other eccentric things.
To describe Oyasumi Punpun, its like watching a train full of children crashing into a retirement home in slow motion; its fucked up, but you can't bring yourself to look away. You just watch in awe and horror as everything happens knowing that there's nothing you can do to stop it. Oyasumi Punpun is a depressing fever dream with weird characters and art, and plot that constantly spirals downward that exists only to break you.
When all said and done, despite how strange all the characters are, despite how absolutely fucked up and terrible things get, and how broken you'll feel after reading it, you can't help but watch as the story of Punpun unfolds. No matter how screwed up Oyasumi Punpun is and how shit I feel after reading it, I can't help but love Oyasumi Punpun.
    Go read it.

I'm going through a similar experience to you because I just recently made the leap to reread Bleach but I think I had the opposite reaction from you whether it was because I am looking at it from two different perspectives as an early teens manga fan and as an adult now that grew up with it. I've read about 360+ chapters of Bleach so far and honestly rereading is giving me a brand new perspective on it.

I could always go back and watch Bleach as much as re-read it at least for me. Obiviously there are faults like any other anime such as questionable amount and quality of filler (which I had love & hate for; ie loathe Bount Arc while adoring the Zanpakuto Rebellion) and a lot of episode and scenes hold up. And in my opinion the story Kubo tells also still holds in the anime. But it's always dope to see a new fan and I am as psyched for the new arc in the manga just as much as the anime.

For what its worth even though the OG manga is pretty old by modern standards, the manga was streets ahead in terms of artstyle and detail. There were soooo many high detailed character shots and clear fighting shots that made my jaw drop when compared to the mess One Piece or Naruto were drawing 15 years ago. Even when compared to modern mangas the art style from Tite Kubo still slaps hard and it was my main joy of reading Bleach.

BLEACH was written to be read in the volume format. While a lot of other weekly manga at the time--and even today--are written to work best when read week to week, Kubo always had the larger story in mind. That often made week-to-week reading less 'exciting' or dramatic, which had lots of people drag it while it was being published. Now that it's complete, I find that it's absolutely the easiest to go back and just read for pleasure. The plot beats just hit right, the pacing is great, it's a light and fun read from end to end. While the coloration done for it is solid work, I absolutely recommend reading it in black and white because that's how Kubo intended for it to be read and the coloration often comes at the cost of lots of the line quality and intended black and white experience. Kubo's inkwork is an absolute delight, too, especially in later arcs once he's gotten more familiar and capable in his craft. The plot itself even has several moments where the black and white nature of the medium are used to narrative effect. It's great stuff, so don't deprive yourself.

2 major flaws that Bleach had - while manga was still ongoing, every chapter felt too short, so weekly read was never quite so satisfying as by binging a complete series. Second, while anime was still ongoing, had no choice but to gobble down months and years of filller arcs. Both of those are no longer issue, with manga and anime being complete. That said, waiting with excitement for Hell arc and thousand year blood arc getting animated.

Also a good note is that most of the filler starts unexpectedly and unnaturally you'll literally be mid way through an important story fight and next episode with no warning you're doing an Arabian Nights parody or a full arc of filler which just sucked, there's cliffhangers and then there's being jerked around for the 5th time because they don't do filler properly, they seemed to want to bring as many canon chapters as fast as possible resulting in, on again off again fillers with no warning placed in awkward story moments to the point where when they get back to the canon story they need to do a full recap because the filler came in half way through an arc.

@@thoughtsfromshivam don’t know if I’m too late and you figured it out, and I don’t have a specific source, but it was basically just put on hiatus because it caught up to the manga again and they decided to not do more filler. Not sure why they took as long as they did since the arc had already finished around 4 years before the anime adaptation was announced. My guesses are they were focused on other projects at the time, were still in a planning stage of sorts, wanted to wait for the light novels to be done, and/or they wanted to wait for the author to get better because he was very sick while making the TYBW, and he’s now helping with the anime. But basically, the anime was never outright announced or confirmed to be “canceled”. It was still doing better than many other anime at the time, so they wouldn’t just cancel it like that, and waiting may prove to have been the best choice, but we’ll have to wait for October to find out.

That’s a full time job, how the fuck do people have the time to do this shit. I understand to you UA-cam IS a job, but for Norman Anime/Manga fans I always feel like the folk who binge at this rate must have no life and be making no progress in there lives
