Fun fact: Nintendo of Japan planned to release this song as the original Mii Channel theme, but the Wii's technical limitations at the time meant that the console wasn't able to handle all of the doots.
Very serious. In 2005, when the hardware development of the console was almost finished by the Nintendo Integrated Research & Development studio (better known as Nintendo Research & Development 3 or R&D3, one of the teams responsible for designing Nintendo hardware), the company started focusing on developing the system's operating system and software. At this time, Kazumi Totaka, a musician famous for composing many soundtracks for Nintendo games, was chosen to write the music for the Wii Menu and all of the default channels that came pre-installed with the console. One of the songs he composed was the Mii Channel theme that you just listened to here, with the incremental doots. His vision was for a glorious crescendo of doots that would convey a feeling of intense euphoria to the players every time they used the Mii Channel. Since audio development is usually done in powerful, dedicated workstations, no issue arose at this time and Totaka carried on and continued working on the rest of the soundtrack. When development of the operating system reached a working state, around early 2006, a demo meeting with R&D's senior engineers and programmers was arranged by Iwata so he could see the console working for the first time. A prototype system was setup in his office and Iwata proceeded to play around with it. Even though the operating system itself was still a beta and buggy at this point, the audio system had been fully completed as well as the songs and sound effects composed by Totaka. When Iwata decided to test the Mii Channel app, the theme song started. When the doots started playing, Iwata noticed the system starting to feel sluggish. As the doots kept increasing, the engineers then realised that the console was getting warmer and, at one point, starting to rumble. One of the senior engineers then asked Iwata to shut down the channel and go back to the Wii Menu, but the system had become so unstable that Iwata couldn't even bring up the Home Menu. The engineers then shouted across the room, begging Iwata to turn the console off by pressing on the Wiimote's power button, but the channel was practically frozen at this point and didn't accept the Wiimote's inputs, despite Iwata frantically pressing its buttons. When the system reached a critical doot point, the console started glowing red hot and the horrified team, sensing an impending disaster, collectively shouted "take cover" and dropped on the floor. Unfortunately, Iwata, whether blindsided by his efforts to turn off the console or unable to hear his team's screams, muffled by the deafening rumble of the console, was standing right in front of it when it exploded. Part of his head was caught in the blast and he nearly lost sight in one of his eyes. Although he went on to make a full recovery, vestiges of this incident remained visible in his face and this is the reason why one of his eyes seemed smaller than the other in his pictures post-2006. Pressed for time, since the company was under intense pressure by its investors to release the console before the end of the 2006 fiscal year, after underwhelming profits during the GameCube era, Iwata had an emergency meeting with a number of lead developers in order to address the situation. Many suggestions were made that ended up not being used, including selling the Wii with a bundled helmet and fire extinguisher, changing the theme song to Smash Mouth's hit song All Star, or scrapping the Mii Channel altogether. Shigeru Miyamoto, also present in that meeting, came up with the idea of coding a simple application that would run on the system's background and would listen for any doot being played by the console. If the doots per second exceeded a certain number, the application would send an instruction to the audio chip to stop playing any more doots, thus effectively being what became known as a "DPS locker", or "doots per second locker". It is estimated that the human ear can't perceive more than 60 doots per second anyway, so the choice to sacrifice performance in favour of stability was taken and Miyamoto's application was implemented in the system, originating the version of the Mii Channel's theme song that we all know, with the limited doots.
