As a former Upper, a CB and a candle in a coffee can are a lifesaver if you’re caught in a blizzard. A little bit of survival training also helps. Great video

we had just a killer trip off-roading in the snow in northern Michigan and it turned out to be a great video for our channel! I think I enjoy snow off-roading more than any other season!

The way I understand it with shackles is this: Use steel shackles to connect to rated bumber connection points. Use soft shackles when connecting rope to rope, or connecting to anything that isn't equivalent to a rated connection point. The steel shackles and rated connection points have far higher ratings than ropes and straps. You mentioned a concern of a steel shackle breaking. Ain't going to happen. The rope, or connection point can break though, sending the shackle flying. As long as the shackle is connected to a rated connection point, the failure will happen at the rope/strap. The huge no-no with steel shackles is using them to connect ropes or connecting them to a non-rated point. If the not rated point fails, the shackle becomes a missle. Never connect a tree saver to a rope with a steel shackle. If connecting a snatch block to a tree saver with a steel cable Winch, hide!

Throw in a whistle. Something analog that doesn't require electronics or reception to work. Simple $1.50 whistle might save your life so keep it around your neck. Make sure your kids carry one too if you go four wheeling in the snow. They may only be 50 yards away but if they see a bear or mountain lion and you can't see them that whistle might save them. Make sure it's plastic so it doesn't freeze to your skin.

If you are alone out in the snow and you have to dig yourself out, throw that shovel away. Get the end of a roof rake or a concrete rake like thing LOL it's kind of like a rake but it doesn't have the tines. You can dig the entire underside of your vehicle out in minutes without any effort, just stick it under your vehicle and drag the snow out.

You can image search the word concrete placer. I have a old aluminum roof rake head that I added a wooden shovel handle to.

So...where can one find 'bages' and 'magenets'? (long 'a') lol
    JK, great video.
Might look for those RC trak boards. They look pretty gnarly, good traction.
Pretty much only do snow wheeling in Colorado. Was out just this weekend in a couple feet of fresh. Highly recommend it once you have some solo experience.
Tho going with others can allow a bit more freedom to choose to do the sketchy stuff.
Oh and also take at least one nights worth of clothes and a spare layer or two even if it's just a day run. It only takes one mistaken line and you could be stranded for hours digging/winching out.

good video but you are woefully unprepared for an overnight in cold temps. a couple hand warmers, some emergency blankets and a thin pair of gloves and hat arent going to cut it. i would strongly suggest anyone who wants to go snow wheeling first go winter camping in the temps you are considering going wheeling in and see how it is.

@@TrailBuilt i realize i came off a bit hostile, thanks for the comment. i think everyone should carry a spare pair of good winter boots. some of my favorites are hoffman felt pacs and military surplus mukluks with hoffman felt liners instead of the included ones. these come with a double pair of felt insoles and ive personally worn them in -20f weather and been totally comfortable.
carhartt Yukon bibs and jackets are nice if its pretty cold, but i also get by with their regular bibs and coats with wool sweaters and long underwear to layer. the nice thing about the yukon stuff is its more water repellent. important not to go too warm in one garment ime especially if your on the move, super easy to overheat and sweat a bunch. layers are always better than one super warm coat etc. if you can afford it, wool is the best for layering, with a down outer layer for extreme cold and gore tex. i usually haunt thrift stores for 100% wool sweaters, the commando sweaters are my favorite because they have less bulk, are form fitting and are better for layering
a big problem in any winter situation but especially ones that arent extreme cold is having snow melt on you and getting wet. this happens a ton especially if your crawling around getting your vehicle dug out etc. i really like the surplus gore tex ecwcs parka and trousers for this, get them big enough to throw over your biggest clothing combination and they can really keep the snow melt from soaking in, they are very affordable for the quality.
also us surplus n4b flyers / arctic mitts are the best ive found, they have a long gauntlet and come with a nice wool liner, super warm and durable. i usually combine these with ergodyne proflex 7401 gloves, have the mittens on a teather around your neck and slip them off when you need to use your hands for something.
next would be probably the most important items, if you need to sleep in winter temps you need a winter tent (the lightfighter ones are pretty good, but there are lots of good options) or hammock with an underquilt system and a bag rated for the temps you plan on encountering. the us military 3 bag system is pretty good for medium cold, but its gotta be a down bag for below zero. also a good pad is essential.
snowshoes, poles and a sled for your gear are also important if you end up needing to hike out.
