    Semi wasteful comment but your advice on numerous topics have helped me through out over a decade. Albeit your quality of video is certainly outdated, but that is it. Your information and detail while being concise, I don't think I could ever replace. After all these years of being a poor backyard mechanic, you helped me keep my girl running. I guess I'm due to purchase your DVDs now but I can't ever replace your generosity of putting this information online. You're a wonderful human and thank you for perpetuating the sharing of knowledge to make the world a better place :)

    I just finsished removing/reinstalling my AOD for a rear main oil seal repair. On test drive it slipped badly above 35mph. Limped home and checked the cable. It had fallen off the throttle body during the reinstall. I didn't understand the Haynes manual adjustment explanation. Watched your video and it was easily 3/4" too tight before the repair. Adjusted it and honestly thought something was wrong because it has never shifted this well since I bought it. Thank you, thank you!

    Thanx - I found one in a junk yard last week, sitting right there looking at me... it was like magic. It was sitting on the passenger seat in perfect condition, brakets and all... I couldnt have had a better day. I installed it like YOU said - not loose - not tense, and the truck runs PERFECT - fank you!
    Im in the process of designing a aftermarket cable myself - I cannot believe the crater of a hole for this market.

    Thank you so much. The mechanics at Aamco messed this step up when they rebuilt my 91 Thunderbird's AOD trans, and I kept bringing the car back because I just knew that something was wrong. A friend of mine told me to adjust the throttle cable, and I looked up your video. The car runs so much smoother with that cable adjusted properly.
    I think I might buy your video because the transmission still isn't fixed correctly, and Aamco refuses to admit that my problems are transmission related.

    Thanks! You just saved me a bunch of money. I thought the 1-2 valve was sticking, but apparently after reinstalling the motor in my truck something shifted, allowing 1/4" slack in the cable. All's well now. Thanks, Man!

    I have an 89 Bronco w/ EFI 5.0L and AOD transmission. When in town or on the hwy, it will shift into the OD gear at 35 MPH. I think it isn't supposed to until 45-50 MPH. Also, when it does, it seems to 'slam' into gear, then it has a shake to it. The shake is VERY VERY noticeable at lower speeds, like 35, but hardly noticeable at 70.

    i really thank you for this for awhile i could not figure out why my mustang would not shift into OD and shops were talking about rebuilding the transmission because believe it or not alot of transmission shops don't know how to adjust the TV cable. I did it myself after watching this and she now shifts quite well Thanks brother

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  11 років тому +2

    When the cable falls off, it normally goes to the low pressure position or just above idle position. If it's found fast enough, it can be reinstalled, no problem. If it's driven for a short length of time at this lowered pressure, it will cause a clutch and/or band to slip (burn up) then your looking at an overhaul.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому +1

    Most of the time if you set it as shown in this video, then use the spacer tool and pressure gauge, the reading will be 35 psi +or- 5 psi. This is why it was done on the factory line years without a gauge. Pushing the throttle to the floor, then setting the cable so it's pulled all the way out will set it to it's highest position (highest and firmest shift point). You can't go higher because the TV cable would keep you from going to WOT.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  13 років тому +3

    @tabletop45 A tight cable adjustment will make a late harder shift. Add an 1/8" of slack in the adjustmenr or simply do as in the video clip.

  • @AZDutchman
    @AZDutchman 12 років тому

    Thanks for the reply! Shifts much better now.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому +1

    To tighten the cable simply adjust it so there's tension on it, maybe about an 1/8" from the neutral position shown in the video. The more tension, the later/firmer the shift. Of course, there's a limit to the amount of tension because the TV cable may top out before the throttle can reach wide open.

    @Restaurant25 That 50resto brass and clip part is really on old Ford replacement part used in a short run recall from the late 80's to replace the high failure rate black bushing. It brass version works fine and so does the new nylon bushing that 50resto also sells (same as the Ford E0AZ-7F330-A) used in the video.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому +1

    Yes, the TV adjustment also controls part throttle shift points as well. The is no vacuum modulator on the AOD so the TV cable takes it's place. If you tighten the cable, the shift will be firmer and later. To tighten the cable simply adjust it so there's tension on it, maybe about an 1/8" from the neutral position shown in the video. The more tension, the later/firmer the shift. There's a limit to the amount of tension because the TV cable may top out before the throttle can reach wide open.

  • @AZDutchman

    Thanks for the video! I replaced the bushing and it pretty much fixed the issue I was having. My question is how do I tighten the cable if I want a more responsive shift? First, second and third, shift okay... The OD shifts a little early...

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  11 років тому

    If your running larger than stock size tires, the later OD upshift is normal. You can adjust as in the video clip and add about a 1/8" slack in the cable (lowering TV pressure) and give it a try.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  14 років тому

    @DUGTRUX That's correct, no outside adjustments other than the TV if it's an AOD. It could have an E4OD which doesn't have a TV cable.

    PS - fyi the plast end from a Jeep Cherokee fits perfectly on the AOD TB. However theres no room to cut that cable and fashion a new cable stop - I cut my cable, put on the jeep end piece (plastic) and the cable ended up being too short! DOH! great vids!

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  11 років тому

    The TV cable return spring might be weak causing the link not to fully return to idle position. That could make later/firmer shifts. Clunk going into 4th is somewhat normal on AOD's built after 89 because the 3-4 accumulator was removed. You could also check the adjustment as shown in the video.

  • @badshoeproductions

    AOD is a decent trans I dont know what they were thinking when the smallest clutchpack makes a jump from 2nd to 3rd plus lockup in one whack, I am glad that the 4R70W was redesigned to change that shift schedule.

    I have an AOD in my 84 crown vic, i tried to tighten up the AOD adjustment by pushing the adj screw back. It has a rod and a set screw to adjust the neutral point of the linkage rod. If i tighten it up about 1 turn it puts my part throttle shifts nice and firm at the rpms i want, but when it downgears it drags the gear down real low before it will downshift coming to a stop. I put it back to factory settings but the shifts are too early and its sluggish when shifting at such a low rpm.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  11 років тому

    If your talking about the shift lever on the trans, it can't be clocked 90* so you will find the correct lever to install.

    That's correct, it's very much like the truck. I think I've seen that style having a spring loaded push button to release and adjust the cable's outer housing.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  16 років тому

    There's many ways to make this adjustment and I talk about them in the full version of this dvd. However this video clip shows the way it was done at the plant and the linkage is setup for this method. The linkage arm shape can be different from car to car. A straight one is common on truck models.

      @badshoeproductions  7 років тому

      So is the problem just no automatic upshifts or slipping engagements or going into neutral after upshifts. Also you sure you have an AOD and not a C6 or E4OD?

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  14 років тому

    @Flattliners Unless you go with an aftermarket shifter, your only hope is to find an 86 or earlier 4.9L with AOD for parts at the junkyard.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому

    The forward clutch is large and can take it but the direct clutch (third/fourth gear) which is small just won't go very far. If the TV cable is incorrectly adjusted (too much slack in the cable) so the pressure is too low, the same thing can happen but maybe not as quick. If you check your car and the bushing is black in color, it's and old one, replace it now.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  13 років тому

    @tippman2k01 If the cable is too tight, the upshift will be late and harsh. A loose cable will cause early-soft shifts and if too loose, slipping and possible clutch damage. If the cable becomes unhooked from the throttle linkages, very often, the clutches will burn up.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому +1

    Normally the TV adjustment won't effect the coasting downshift that much but tightening the screw should cause an higher road speed and firmer coasting downshift.

      I had my aod rebuilt on my 87 town car. He set the tv adjustment to 1/8 inch. and after about a month I have hard downshifts when slowing down. Ideas?

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому +1

    Normally fluid coming from the vent is caused by being over filled or over heated.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  11 років тому +1

    Yes, normally, the cable should have no slack or tension at idle. I like 88 and later with small block pattern. A 3.00 gear won't work very well because the rpm will be too low at 55 mph in overdrive. You will need a 164 tooth plate with an AOD.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому

    If your at road speed and floor it, a 4-3 downshift should happen but will normally not go to 2nd gear. You can tighten the cable if you want to try but I'm not sure there's a problem.

    Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately the mechanic is not sure what the part is. Chilton's shows some nuts and a cotter pin holding the cable to the shifter, which it would appear to me any shop would have, but Ford faxed the shop a diagram showing something completely different, like a barrel the cable would go through. Your video shows a plastic doo-hickey at the shifter end that doesn't look like either. Just trying to figure out what's suppose to be there and what to call it.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  15 років тому

    Yes the cable has to be on and adjusted for proper up shifts.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  11 років тому

    Yes, that's where it is. You have to remove the transfer case and inspect it. As said before, if it's sticking, there's likely trash in the pan which may mean an overhaul is in your future.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  12 років тому

    The AOD has the small block bolt pattern so it will work with a 302 or 351W. Of course, cooler lines, flywheel, crossmember, driveshaft, shift linkage would need to be changed and cable setup will need to be added for the TV linkage if your using a carb. You might be better off finding a later model truck if your just looking for more mpg.

  • @302zombie

    Someone on the internet said that if the TV cable becomes disconnected at the throttle it will default to maximum pressure. This is incorrect according to the shop manual. It says that in order for the Line pressure to operate at max you have to disconect the cable or rod down at the trunnion block. I would trust the manual more than the net because Im assuming it was written by the engineers.

    @extreme383 The AOD has no electrical connections to the overdrive or any other internal component. I would say, the plug your talking about is the neutral safety and backup light switch. You will need to wire the safety switch into your cars starter system.

  • @badshoeproductions
    @badshoeproductions  14 років тому

    Well, the direct clutch or inner shaft is gone so it's overhaul time. Yes, a TV cable not being adjusted can cause a low pressure shift which can burn out a clutch.

    If you tighten the cable and the trans slips worse then it sounds like overhaul time. Tightening the cable should make it shift later and firmer. Anytime an AOD starts slipping, for what ever reason, it's most likely damaged.

    Thanks for explanation! So (contrary to MB gearboxes f.e.) - it is not possible to adjust shift points this way at all, right? Only the firmness. On MB gearboxes, firmness is adjusted by a vacuum line and a modulator on the line, and the shift points are governed by a bowden - how is it governed here? I'd like to have my tranny shift slightly higher (different road speeds here, it shifts all the time...).
    Thank you!

    Excellent video,clear and to the point,that story about the assembly line is 110% the truth,i knew a old guy that's been deceased for several years that worked on a assembly line making Mustangs in the 80s and 90s and he told me exactly that,you just put the cable in, dont pull or push,just pull the clip, put it in neutral (the TV cable not the tranny) install and close the clip and your good to go, been doing it like this for yeeeears with 0 issues. I'm sure there is a very fine way to adjust this in a tranny shop with the proper tools.
    I do have a question if i may,i have a AOD in my car and its leaking thru the selector seal,I'm going to replace it,any recommendations for a new seal like try to find OEM or one from a reputable seller on eBay will be fine? i don't feel like doing the job twice, also my TV cable is working great however the fluid from leaking has melted/destroyed so to speak the boot,is that cool? i dont think they sell replacement boots and i dont feel like replacing the whole cable,thank you so much for your time and input.

      Any of the seal kits out should be fine. If you can't find a cable boot then you won't be replacing it, simple enough.

    I have a 89 Ford bronco with a 5.0 and it'll go in gears and will slip out but will run just won't change gears and we adjusted the cable as in your video what could the problem be?

      Have you checked to see if it's low on fluid? If the level is ok and you still have slipping problems, it's likely overhaul time but have a local tranny shop take a look before making any big step.

    @freekpill2009 I believe Holley and Lokar as kits and parts for TV setup on a carb.

    @christianson27 Sitting a few weeks won't hurt anything. Try the additive and see what happens.

    From one tech to another, this is just fantastic. I am really good at electrical diagnosis, but Automatic transmissions are Voodoo to me. Are these as critical as the TV cables on GM vehicles? Can the TV cable be used to tailor WOT upshift points? I would like WOT upshifts to occur at about 3,600 RPM instead of 4,000 on my F-150 because I have a 300ci six, which is not a rev happy engine.
