Today I share how I prepare and turn a chunk of wet elm cut this summer and make a beautiful and practical Tealight Lantern Ornament you can hang on the tree or let it stand on the shelf along with all the other trinkets and baubles that are displayed for Christmas.!
A 2 1/2 diameter piece of wood about 6" long and an hour of time and you can have one like this(or even better!) for your holiday display. It was fun to make and I think will be around the house on the Christmas holidays for years to come. That is unless one of the friends or relatives get sticky fingers!!
Just a reminder everything you see here is probably going to be a rehash of ideas and projects I have learned from UA-cam videos and watching more experienced turners than I .
Since retiring in 2021 and building my woodshop I have had more time to do the things I really enjoy!! Woodturning of all kinds--especially segmented woodturning--are my favorite. More recently though I have had an abundance of green wood that I have to process and must turn before I lose it to the bugs and spalting. Now that it has cooled down a little and can't be outside as much I can spend more time in the shop making shavings and sawdust! Come along for the journey of a retired beginning woodturner with WAY TOO MUCH time on his hands. I'd love to have the company!
Love getting the shop floor dirty and the shavings a flying!!!

You should start a club. I'd love to master a skew.

I think I need personal hands on instructions on skew usage. Was trying to turn a few finials last night with skew. Frustrating!

Hello Jim, that's a really nice little lantern, I love it, nice job. I'm thinking though, because the wood is green, will it crush the tea light when it has dried?.You've got a new subscriber, best regards. 🙃

How do you hold the tea light in place?

Tealight is just friction fit. If hole is drilled a little too big I would just put a couple dabs of hoy melt glue on the bottom.
