  • Just like a musical scale, the kata of jo and ken are a series of movements which follow each other, in a precise order, the mastery of its movements in their basic form then in their fluid forms depends on the frequency and the quality of our training
Any good teacher must raise his students to their best levels, to do so he must be able to present fluid forms including precision, purity of gesture, stability with a rhythm and a balanced cadence that makes it possible to establish a connection between the body movements and the sequence of suburi, it is through this example that the student will find the energy and the motivation necessary to raise his level and rise to the highest peaks of his art.
Admittedly, the repetition of the fundamental bases of the kata of jo must be done on a daily basis whatever our level or our grade but confining a student for years to this type of static exercises only without being able to show or demonstrate advanced forms and fluids in order to invite him to progress and compose by himself, it is to condemn him all his life to rigid forms which will be of no interest to him.
If in a similar way I made the parallel between the musical scales and the sequence of the kata of jo it is to highlight an aspect of the practice deliberately neglected by a large number of teachers which consists in teaching only basic forms, can we then imagine that a teacher who will only teach the basics of music theory can one day lead his student to compose a musical score and make it a virtuoso.
The best example is undoubtedly that of the founder of Aikido O'sensei Morihei Ueshiba who, in all the video testimonials we have, left us excellent technical demonstrations of Aikido weapons where all the movements of jo of ken of Yari and Junken stirred together follow each other to infinity with breathtaking fluidity and precision!
When Morihiro Saito Shihan, a direct student of the founder of Aikido, listed them, classified them, then broke them down into distinct movements and finally codified them in their current basic form, it was only with the aim of making it easier for us to learn them so that different forms and other postures specific to the jo and ken kata are studied in a precise way in a logic that allows their correct and fluid applications with or without partners far from the frozen and ossified forms that we are witnessing today.
Throughout his life and just like the founder of Aikido, Morihiro Saito Shihan made brilliant demonstrations of jo during the courses which led him masterfully, thus showing the way to follow to his many direct students. as well as to future generations the goal to be achieved by the example of a technique mastered in its fluid and advanced form.
The kata demonstrated in this video is inspired by the 20 Suburi or Kata de jo mixed together in a fluid and free form.
