Facebook Gaming is growing faster than any other streaming site in the world. However, I think that Facebook is an inherently evil company that has a long history of abusing user privacy and data. This video is a personal philosophical commentary about how I don't stream on Facebook Gaming and why the site scares me. We will be covering everything from Cambridge Analytical, to Russian trolls, to fake news, to data collection, and finally to user privacy abuse. I do hope you enjoy the ton of Fortnite gameplay as well.

Mad respect, people like you are what society needs to move forward. Putting morals before money is one of the most mature and wise decisions you can make in my opinion. It's what prevents you from being sucked into the insane wealth acquisition treadmill that makes you a passenger of the ship that is your life.

I honestly love driftor for being that person who does this. You can tell, too, that he is genuine and not being "moral" for the sake of good reception and money.

The thing that’s kept me around is your really well thought out discussion videos like these, I love to listen to them in the background while I do something else, and that got me thinking,
have you ever considered doing a podcast? You’re a really well informed, genuine guy, and I think it would be interesting to hear more of your discussions and opinions.
Keep up the good work, driftor.

I'm a sociology major with a minor in advertising. Personally I see nothing inherently wrong with collecting information on people. In fact figuring out what makes a person is a big reason I am in that major, I love learning about it. What I do think the problem is lies with the transparency and widespread understamding on how this kind of advertising can affect the average person. If people knew the extent this information could be used to manipulate and they knew the how/what/where with their information it loses a lot of its power to be dangerous because anyone who abuses it can be held accountable. Ideally in the coming decades enough people like you and me will be able to spread the truth about information gathering. I dont think personal information gathering is inherently negative, but people need to know about it in order to ensure it isnt used in a harmful way. The only reason these campaigns have such an impact is because people are ignorant, arrogant, and complacent. Armed with information we have the power to keep corruption at bay.

The only streamer I watch on Facebook is Kross, and when he announced that he would be moving to Facebook I was like "Aw man come on. I get it though." My stance on everything is that I made a Facebook when I was a kid in high school and it's too late to do anything about it now. Even if I deleted my account completely, my data would still be theirs forever.

Hey driftor, I am a big fan of your videos but I need to comment on some of the things you said about Facebook with regard to their business model. As someone who has invested in Facebook for years and provides analytical coverage on their earnings for my job, I can assure you that they have very valuable advertisements as their price per ad on average has been growing at over 30% for the past few years. Companies that use Facebook get a larger return on their investment than they do from almost any other advertising medium. So while you think they are “trash” ads, I’d argue that their earnings performance rebukes this. They are more profitable than amazon and wal mart combined and they do run a very legitimate business, even if it is morally dubious and irresponsible. They also own Instagram so they are not building a streaming platform to reach younger users, but rather diversify their ad load away from display ads and move towards video ads. They make over 80% of their revenue from advertisements. Not marketing data to politicians.

You know is quite inspiring hearing someone who is fighting to challenge this terrifying reality! I agree with you entirely (did not even know the half of it before today (thanks !)) and also I agree with you that even if everyone abandons morals, at the very least you can set an example - I hope I can make the right choices, just like you have x

Google does the same, and almost all tech companies, and your ISP as well. If you want to stay out of data mining, ditch your ISP and smartphone. Also, you can use a linux computer ideally without internet, but if you want, you might get away using a VPN and no javascript in an open-source browser, and don't use mainstream websites.

It was illegal for your ISP to collect this of data until about 9 months ago :(

Basicly you need to give up the internet. And lets be honest, no person is going to do that.

Yes that why I edited the comment, unfortunately, the lawmakers were more interested in the lobbying power of ISPs.

SirExtreme15 I taught about it, and concluded I would need a second pc for browsing, as from my research many games don't seem to run on linux.

Please just take one immoral offer, make the money you deserve, then return to being morally admirable Drift. I get the morals thing 100%, but damn it’s hard to watch these offers fly by you. Been here for years and wishing you success.

I think about it from multiple faces.... If you aren't more informed on information technology & algorithms, your goal should always be to skew the data & fight back by confusing algorithms, you have an obligation to fight psychological manipulation.... but if you actively participate in social media as if it's life & you let it influence you... You don't have the mental capacity.
Not as a goal to claim that "stupid people are going to be stupid" but more of the idea that "You should be educated on this and it's your goal to decide whats sensitive and what you want to share"
As for Stone Mountain I think he's got a very good approach, and one that I actually think we need some more from people, but you should realize, that YOU taking their money is NOT an endorsement of the platform... it's a business transaction that should follow certain rules and precautions that mean you should be an entertainer... and not a driving force to the platform itself

One of your best videos so far. Many people don't realize this mass manipulation that is rampant in todays society. Thank you for highlighting this in an entertaining and thought provoking way. You continue to be one of the best creators on this platform and you have earned my subscription since day 1.

Bad company ethics doesn't even scare me that much, but I've always felt the artificial intelligence one is scary. AIs are so good at what they're doing that they can also tear humanity apart in ways we cannot possibly understand. It doesn't even have to be some self-aware AI that "wills" it to happen. It could just be some kind of mistakes.
