This movie is one of the biggest cons in movie history. And I love it for it. For whatever reason it seemed to be marketed as another romantic comedy. I saw it expecting that right after a break up. And imagine my surprise when halfway through the movie, the plot turns on you. The emotions are raw and feel so real. The movie forced me to face the pain, anger and sadness I was trying to evade. By the end, I was reduced to tears and felt emotionally exhausted. It was like months of therapy in 2 hours. I love this movie. It will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Lol I saw this when I was 8 I saw like an hour of this film my older sister was watching this lol now I’m 20 and understand it way more and not gonna lie did kinda have a crush on Clive Owen and still do!
Don't be stupid. He was cheated on, he is pissed, and he wants to punish her as well as have one last moment with her. The world isn't black and white because you're too stupid to know how grey it really is.
It was the most "shocking" relationship movie I ever scene. It truly is because the talk is so "raw" and the emotions are flying every which way. There is no reason to any of their relationship. Except one person - has been lying throughout which even more surprising.
lol Larry is certainly not a winner. He stays in a toxic relationship in the end and he knows very well that he's only the second choice. But he stays with her regardless. That does not make him a winner at all. Alice was the one who realized the same thing and managed to walk away from it. She's the winner, if you can atually call anyone a winner in this movie.
Larry is the single best aharacter in this movie for me. He's been hurt by this affair almost more than Jane has, and he still want's to be with Anna. He manipulates her, but in a revealing way rather than in a destructive way. He just wanted her to face the fact that Dan doesn't value her nearly as much as he does/did. Im not saying they should have gotten back together, but Clive won this movie as Larry.
What I love about Larry is his brutal honesty. He is doused in shit by Anna and her affair but refuses to drown in it. Instead he flings it everywhere and rubs it in Anna and Dan's hypocritical faces. He is manipulative, deceitful and vindictive, but he owns all of it, unlike Anna and Dan who pretend to be "good people" while leaving emotional chaos and destruction everywhere they go.
Brilliant movie I remember seeing it in theaters when it came out in 2004, my heart stopped it was devastating. Truly amazing movie, by the great Mike Nichols may he rest in peace

It’s a very difficult thing you’re asking me to do Josh. Look at the way Jing Han treated me. I can’t do that all over again. I’m fine being called an emotionless robot. I take that as a compliment. Gay people who can’t take even a hint of criticism? Having children means all your friends hate you because you can’t give them so much attention anymore? I mean, why are you jealous of a child? Parasites feeding off your kindness and not reciprocating? I give up. I’m tired.
what did he tell the girl in the night club? I want to grab your ankles and bend over and touch the fucking floor! lol! only Clive owned character in this movie! lol still an awesome movie! can't go wrong with any of these actors!💗
It’s really an agreement to divorce terms. If you don’t agree on terms without a judge then you get a judge to decide on the terms. Which is why it gets ugly.
Please do not get me wrong, i do not judge, but can somebody please tell me why cant he get over her even though she cheated on him? Like why is he so affraid to loose her? Is it obssesion? Love? Ego? Scare? Dependence?
It’s kinda left up to the viewers interpretation. I personally thought it was a bit of an obsession mixed with love cause he did marry her. But his ego probably got in the way and he most likely couldn’t stand that she was leaving him to be with another man.
Larry said in the movie that Anna was a depressive, basically that she needed to self-sabotage things and didn't allow herself to be happy. When she left him and was already with Dan, Larry used that very self-sabotage of hers to manipulate the situation and get her back. She slept with Larry and got back together with him (sabotaging her relationships with Dan). Larry saw that very self-destructive dynamics of Anna, but he didn't care and loved her despite being like that, just as she forgave him his hot temper and other flaws. This is what he said to Dan as well at the end, when Dan was upset at his office. "You don't know anything about compromise". Every other character constantly lies to try to make things look prettier and more noble, while Larry accepts the situation for what it is and does what he can. He didn't just see the superficial "she cheated", he saw the underlying mess of self-sabotage and self-hate and wished her to be able to accept love and happiness. He loved and needed her. On the other level, he also simultaneously got revenge by stealing her back from Dan (dominating him in the pp competition they had going on, and dominating her by knowing how to push her buttons to steal her back). Insanely cool writing.
Does anyone understand why Alice used a false identity or what the viewer is supposed to make of that? I know her namesake on the memorial plaque "saved three children" but Alice didn't save anyone, so that can't be the point.
I love how real the movie is. No happy love story. In the end, everyone is screwed and unhappy. No one won.

Completely agreed, Clive Owen knocked it out of the park.
the dialogue in the movie is insanely good. It's so raw
The power and control dynamics between Anna and Larry though
It’s so funny when Clive says “I love you” and then “One condition..” Clive does not love Julia. He just want to have her.
