I tried a little modification to the device. Instead of cutting the hole, you can put a pvc ball valve in the vacuum exit. Closing the valve will regulate and reduce the suction so not to harm the bees. Simply open the valve completely for normal vacuum operation. Seems to work well on the one I built. Great video though…!
That's a great idea!
Hello, from The Netherlands: big compliment. I took your idea for making this Bee vac. We succeeded and rescued a big swarm. Thanks and greetings from a fellow lady-beekeeper.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I love to meet fellow female beekeepers and I am so glad the vac worked out for you!!!
Awesome video! I will definitely be making one of these tomorrow after a trip to Lowes and Home Depot. Thanks!
Very well explained. The demo at the end is a nice touch.
Thank you so much!
Simple and informative video. Thank you!
Thank you!
Nice video and I appreciate your preparedness and quick but thorough information.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Same - thanks for not making it a 19 min video lol
Built it w 4 screened holes I’ll tape shut when using, then remove the tape for ventilation. Thanks so much for the simple idea and straight forward video!
I'm so glad you found it helpful and it worked for you!
Best video yet
Thank you. 😊
Thank you so much! ❤
Great job, thanks for the info.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing, buit one like yours yesterday and vacumumed a swarm
That's awesome. So glad it worked for you!
Thank you for this video love it!!!!
You're so welcome. Thank you for watching!
Great job, definitely will get me one on stand by.
Thank you! Let me know how it works for you!
This is a great video. I am so glad I came across it. Off to Home Depot I go!
Hopefully it works for you!
Thanks so much! This worked perfectly. We slowly increased the suction and it worked perfectly. We only ended up losing a handful of bees.
I'm so glad this worked for you!
I use a honey gate on my bucket with screen hot glued over the inside of the gate works great... God bless
The fabulous bee babe. Great video. Your kicking ass. 🙂
Thank you so much!
We use the Buckethead on all our Bee removals , you can also cut a egg shaped piece of another bucket and drill a small screw hole at the narrow end and threw the bucket and just above your large hole to make an adjustable swinging flap that regulates more precisely .
Great video !!
Thanks for sharing Nikki 👍
Thank you so much Jeff!
Great tips ,thanks.
Thank you so much for the feedback and thank you for watching!
You are not just beautiful, but a beautiful person as well 🥰❤
Thank you so much!
Awesome well done 👏
Thank you so much!
I made your vac and it works great.
That's awesome! I'm so glad it worked for you!
I watched your video yesterday snd made my bee vac last night so I can get a colony of bees from an old sofa. I’ll let you know how it works. Thank you for showing how to make a bee vac.
I hope it works for you! Good luck with your removal!
@@sweetbeefarms the removal went well and the bee vac worked like a champ. Thanks again.
Thanks
Nice!
Could you use a bucket that has a honey gate hole already drilled in it?
if you take some chicken wire 12" tall and 24" long and put it in the bucket the bees will have the wire to cling to and you can get a lot more bees in with the least amount dying. :)
Looks like you have a lot of blue tape on the hole at the end of video. How much of the 2" hole did you cover? thanks
Is the inside of the suction tube smooth? All the machines I have seen are ribbed.
It's all good
i've thought about using a vacuum gauge to find out what is the least amount of vac it would take to pick up the bees and get them to the tank
That sounds like a good idea. If you do it, I'd be interested in knowing how it worked out.
Worked, but about 1/3 of the bees died. Any tips?
How do you get the queen out?
That's a great video! Really straight forward and to the point.
Question: you could use a shop vac and just apply the same concept, right? You would just have to drill the hole, place the screen, apply the hot glue, and you're done, right? I really appreciate your video. Great job, and thanks!
Thank you so much Matt! I'm sure you could do the same thing with a traditional shop vac. The only thing I would think is that they are a little more expensive to purchase but I don't see why it wouldn't work the same.
@@sweetbeefarms Turns out I have a few that I have collected over the years lol I'm going to convert one so I have something if I am ever in the position to collect a hive like that. . .maybe add a rheostat (like a dimmer) so I can control the speed of the shop vac.
I subscribed to you, do you have anymore videos?
That sounds like a good idea to try. Thank you so much for subscribing! I appreciate it. I do have more videos. I am new to UA-cam so I plan on uploading more videos as well.
Speed controller will really help.
That's a good idea!
Has anyone experimented with different size holes so no tape is required?
Hi, just stumbled across your channel bc I may need a bee vacuum to do a tricky cutout. (You’re one of the first suggestions for “bee vacuum” btw!).
Could you tell me the diameter of the hole you cut to weaken the suction?
She said she did a 2 inch bit!
Would it be helpful to install a piece of 1/4-1/2” hardware cloth inside in a circular area for the bees to cluster/ cling to to while transporting . I’m definitely going to get one of those from Home Depot this weekend.
You could definitely try it. I would be curious to know how it works. In my experience, the bees seem to cluster on the filter during transport but that would work well too.
I got that idea from 628dirtrooster UA-camr . He does a lot of cutouts and has a piece of hardware cloth inside his bee vac bucket. He said this allows the bees to cluster easily and helps them keep from overheating.
Nicely explain. Though, the link for the power vacuum bucket head at home depot didn't allow me to enter "not permission" it said 😏any help with that? Regards
Thank you. I think the link may have changed since I uploaded the video. I have corrected it in the description but here it is as well

I’m curious about all the forager bees that you miss when you vacuum out a hive in the daytime? Do you come back at night for them or are they considered losses?
They usually find their way into another Colony. Either another Hive, maybe another Apiary in the Area. Or possibly a Wild Colony in a Tree etc. If its very Wet or Colder (Say an Autumn Swarm at the end of decent Bee Weather re Daily Temps) they then may be somewhat sacrificed.
Bee Colonies do by default have a drop off of Population anyway.
Hope this helps. 😎

I like your video so much. Is the shop vacuum the same as bee vacuum. I think you changed the vacuum cleaner into bee vacuum by drilling a hole on the bucket, aren't I right?
That's exactly right. It's super easy and inexpensive
hi like video.
Thank you so much!
Hi, I built this as recommended. I wanted a longer hose, so got a 2.5" diameter hose that's 10' long. With going through a 1.25" nozzle, then transitioning into the 2.5" hose and then back into the 1.25" vacuum intake, will that be too much for the bees to handle?
That's a great question and I'm not really sure. If you do alcohol washes for mites, you could test the vacuum on those bees prior to the wash. Those bees are not going to make it anyway.
We've used the vac a couple of times. The hole cut in the bucket reduces the vacuum way too much, so we end up having to cover most of the whole with duct tape to create enough suction to get the bees. But now we seem to have a problem with some of the bees hitting the "wall" right inside the intake of the vacuum and being killed. How did you eliminate this problem?
@@robertusm sounds like you're not reducing the vac pressure enough, also might add a some sort of cushioning to soften the blow~
Must you take the bag off that is in the inside of bucket
Nope. You leave that on. The only time you need to remove it is when you are using to remove something wet.
Before you start the vacuum process, does the inside blue bag remain in place, or do you remove it to vacuum up the bees?
Good question. Leave it in place
If I leave the blue bag on, will the bees go into the blue bag or the bucket?
Question: Joe homeowner. If bees are in the wall can I use this to get all the bees and the queen then go somewhere, maybe a neighbors house :) and let them go?
It's unlikely that you would be able to get all of the bees. Removing the hive completely is the best way to get rid of them. If you do decide to relocate them, I'd do it a pretty good distance from the original location or they will try to find their way back in.
How do the bees not end up inside the blue filter bag?
That is for the exhaust. you need filter to keep bees out of exhaust.
does the vac runs by battery or direct current?
That's a good question. It is not battery operated so it will need a power source.
Going to Homedepo today to buy the bucket vac
590th person to like the video wahooooooooo what do I win?? Lol just kidding, nice video and thanks for uploading.
Thank you so much!
This did not work for me.bees were able to clog the intake and stop the airflow. Trying different design.
I have one myself
Oh, that sucks,.. in a good way. 😉
shop vac is $30 currently
You talking about a bucket but all I see are 2 jugs 😂😂😂😂 damn the internet got me too comfortable saying shit like this 😂😂😂😂
Plastic screen is not the best to use, bees will chew they’re way out
You are correct if it is plastic screen. Window screen is made of aluminum though.
Are you single?
