Here is what most people don't realize. Palworld has some heavy backers now for their own personal reasons. Microsoft has already helped Palworld for exclusive rights and do to the fact that Microsoft hates Nintendo for many illegal actions Nintendo has done to them. Palworld is being released on Sony which helps Sony get over its nasty recent fuck up with fans where a little bit ago Sony pissed off a huge amount of fans with its Hell Divers scandal and backing an indie developer would be the very thing it needs to help its reputation and seeing as Nintendo pissed off Sony a lot especially with illegally getting Sony's magic wand controller removed from the market with illegal practices and other bullshit law suits Sony out right hates Nintendo. Google and Apple are going to be getting Palworld in phone release which would in fact be the biggest break through in merging the gap between console and computer gamers into the phone gaming market which well there has never been this kind of merging before and phone gaming companies really want this kind of merging because it would create hundreds of millions of new players to potentially billions of new gamers over time. So its in Google and Apple's interest to well deal with a serious enemy to them. Hell Google and Apple are still violently pissed off at Nintendo for the Pokemon Go scandals which most have forgotten about but Google and Apple have not. Back around 2010 Nintendo edited the coding of Pokemon go and would give players more balls and stuff without telling the people it would cost them money which ended up causing people's phone bills to go from like $50 to $60,000 and phone companies had to deal with the giant issue and instead of trying to weed out all of the bills they waved people's phone bills for 3 to 6 months and charged Google and Apple for the issues and Google and Apple had to deal with the bullshit that Nintendo caused and Pokemon Go basically died in popularity and Google and Apple are still violently pissed off having to pay billions for Nintendo being scumbags. So yea Palworld has very powerful allies for their own personal legit reasons. Nintendo bringing this law suit up can easily cause Google, Apple, Microsoft, Sony, and the entire world to come together to combine the pieces an summon Exodia to obliterate Nintendo once and for all then all of Nintendo's properties and assets will be split up between the Gods of Mega Corporations for their own personal interests. Also this law suit threatens Steam and all companies that created and own creature capturing mechanics so Microsoft, Sony, Google, Apple, and Steam have their own interests to keep making money at stake so they are literally going to war and Steam prepared the battlefield. Nintendo has pissed off the giant gods and this fight is not Nintendo against Palworld this is Nintendo against Palworld backed by Google, Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Steam, and the entire human race. Its in the mega god tier corporations to fire their death stars at the piss ant Nintendo for themselves to keep themselves in existence. Notice how Nintendo hasn't made a court date ready? Yea that is because Nintendo is trying to weasel a way to subvert the gaming industries. Now note if Nintendo is successful then Palworld has a way around the law suit anyway by moving its existence out of Japan and moving it fully to America or somewhere else because how Patent laws works is interesting. The entire world allows each country to make is own patents but they have to follow a bit of guild lines such as you can't be to broad and you have to be civil and quite a lot of other rules as well that make things nicer for people to follow. If Nintendo wins this lawsuit Japan will be in blatant violation of basically every single rule which would cause either Japan to over throw the ruling and basically shut Nintendo down and declare Nintendo's actions pure evil and fine the living shit out of Nintendo or Japan can get kicked out of the World Patent Agreement or at the very least severely sanctioned. Basically if Nintendo loses the law suit then Nintendo can get super sanctioned. If Nintendo wins Japan loses its legitimacy in the world and risks being kicked out of world treaties which would destroy their entire reputation in the world and Japan would be declared an enemy to the world nation and all trade with Japan would be gone instantly and Japan will die as country and all patents that were owned in Japan would be a giant free for all. So if Nintendo loses they lose badly and if Nintendo wins Nintendo loses badly. Nintendo doing this shit is so bad that Nintendo fucked up to the point where Nintendo risks being removed from existence as a company weather it wins or loses Nintendo loses.

Anubis, unlike Lucario, has plantigrade feet instead of digitigrade. You can see Anubis feet firmly planted on the ground like a person's, and legs are more straight like that of a person's.
Also Anubis has five digits on his hands rather than the paw like three that Lucario has. I think people are just so ingrained with Lucario's design that they immediately jumped to this thought and idea.

Not only was Palworld a day 1 game pass game (which means they potentially helped fund it), but World of Warcraft has had those same mechanics that Pocket Pair is being sued for. Also, Tem Tem, Nexomon, Crystal Monsters, Dragon Quest Monsters, Digimon Story and Medarot have been doing all these things for decades.

Yeah, this is the main problem with it. It shows that this isn't about protecting IP but shutting down a specific competitor.
Though apparently Japan's legal culture around this sort of thing also has an honor element to it and companies are more likely to push these things on competitors that are disrespectful, which to be fair, Pocketpair have been to Pokemon by heavily ripping elements of their designs (apparently retroactively as testimony from one of the designers claims the original unique designs were purposely changed without the original artists consent or input to resemble existing Pokemon) and the creators openly taking jabs at Pokemon online.
With the amount reveled, it's starting to feel more like a mock charge. Something that is more meant to make Pocketpair and other companies aware that they're willing to take action in specific circumstances. I'm not even sure if they actually expect to win or not.

I honestly think Switch emu devs should have kept them private, or limited access until after the system had been superceded.

The problem with the Lucario and Anubis comparison is that they are both based off of a god with unique features so there's only so much you can do with that also if anything Sensei Anubis is actually the same name as the God and looks more genuine like what the God would look like you can make an argument that Lucario copied off of him
As for the sheep pals and Pokemon they are just simple designs they both look like chubby sheep and if you consider that they both are Japanese companies it would make sense why their monsters look so similar they both take from their culture

I really hate the "Lucario vs Anubus" comparison. They look literally nothing alike. The only similiarity between them are that they both have three toes. Every single other design element is different. Different clothes, different leg styles, different color schemes, different color pallets, different color patterns, one has paws for hands with spikes, the other has human hands, etc etc etc etc... To claim Anubus is "too close to lucario for comfort" would be to say that no monster collecting game can ever design a bipedal animal-based creature at all.
This is, incidentally where a lot of other comparisons also trip up. People arguing such ridiculous ideas such as "Pokemon owns the concept of sheep, in general. Completely."

It’s funny, it’s almost like they forgot about all the new things they added to pokemon, such as mega maxing, if that makes sense at all. In pokemon they have people that own pokemon to fight with, uniformly, collect and level up the pokemon. Well as in palworld they have much more use and differ with that, such as different forms of travel and overall style pokemon has never had and the fact they even have use outside of battle other then a ‘side quest’, breeding and travel, even though possible. Ideas sparked by palworld, with the journey pokemon has brung, I really don’t think it does add up, palworld has violence, and is an open world, even the fact some pals share similar traits of pokemon is just a piece of art looked at wrong or misinterpreted. To keep it simple I have played palworld, I have played pokemon. Both are differing games with multiple things alike that are different from each other, such as visual sights, and also feel for the quest line!

I am disgusted by Nintendo, but there are a couple points I wanted to add. The specific patents were filed after the release of Palworld is partly true. They were actually part of a much larger patent previously, in Japan you can do that, have like a giant all encompassing patent, then break it down into smaller, more specific ones over time.
And, Pal World is partnered up with Sony. I find it hard to believe that Sony won't back them up finically in court. If for no other reason than they still have bad blood with Nintendo.

Pokémon made the patents after Palworld was out and a big hit. There never was any real case for the AI. Second, the lawsuit is over patent infringement. This is game mechanic related and has NOTHING to do with the designs of the Pals. If it *were* related to the designs of the Pals, Nintendo would be taking them to court over copyright, not patent. Based on that fact alone, we can reasonably conclude Nintendo recognizes they won't have a leg to stand on with regards to the designs. As a third, bonus fact, it's highly probable that the reason why some of the designs are so similar is that they both stem from the same original inspiration. Let's be honest, Nintendo hates any successful game that's even remotely similar to one of theirs, but games from other AAA developers are either too different and/or those companies have a enough money that Nintendo knows it's not worth the attempt. Palworld has a lot of of similarities to Pokemon that they believe they could swing a judge/jury their way, and an indie company would have a hard time financially battling Nintendo in court, so Nintendo's going for it. This will result in gate-keeping for games, where if a developer wants to make a game remotely similar to major IP, they need to have a major publisher attached to avoid lawsuits.

By the way, if anyone has every single damn one of those cards, I’ll pay very well for those-however, my financial situation is complex and I can’t have any more than $2000 in my account or the cash stops coming in so I’m sure we can come up with a price as long as shipping and taxing costs don’t exceed the total with said card collection-anyway, the point is I never gave a 💩 about Pokemon and I didn’t care for Palworld when it was released and was even less interested with it until this lawsuit situation because of the threat it posed to gaming as a whole. Nintendo had $12 billion in revenue last year. They did just downgrade their expected profits for this year though, to on a mere $2.36 billion, due to declining switch sales. It would be one thing if they were suing over character design similarities (which apparently weren't close enough to hold in court, but atleast were honest complaints), but these patent claims are so garbage. I hope this backfires so hardcore on Nintendo in court. To begin with the game mechanics that are being patented are mechanics that revolve around monster catching mechanics specifically in 3d open world environments, and Pocketpair actually used those specific game mechanics first in their first monster hunter game Craftopia, and then in Palworlds beta's and eventually Palworld itself, only Pocketpair weren't a-holes who want to patent all their game mechanics because they wanted open creativity. Pockemon then first used those same specific mechanics in their Arceus game 2 years after Pocketpair used them first in their own games. Then this year 2024 over several months, after Palworld started doing well, and Sony started looking to team up with them, Nintendo/Pokemon, began filing legal patents for game mechanics first created and used by Pocketpair, since no one had patended them yet, and are now using those patents to sue Pocketpair for using their own intellectual property, by claiming it now belongs to Nintendo. If this lawsuit doesn't outright come down hard on Nintendo once this gets to court, it will set a horrible precedent that any game company, or any type of company in general, can patent another company's creations, and then sue them for using their own creations, just because they weren't stingy, and wanted to share.

Direct clones won't win any favors, but mechanics should be free for anyone. Maybe protect something for a limited period of maybe 6 months if there is a need but otherwise should be free for all as the industry depends on it to survive.

i think one of those patents would also pull Ark:SE and SA into this due to cryo pods what with you being able to throw the pod to bring out your creature. then again Ubisoft could patent the climbing a tower and syncing your map and sue Nintendo for Zelda doing it. this seems like its going to be a bad way for things to go if it starts a land slide of patents and and lawsuits.

The most egregious thing about all this is the inspiration for creature collecting video games goes back much further than the 80s. It goes back centuries, maybe millennia.
A common pastime for children in East Asia, before the digital age, was collecting bugs like crickets and beetles and using them to fight other childrens' bugs. My mom used to do that in the 60s in Vietnam. I believe there is actually a Japan-exclusive game series, possibly published by Sega, that is just collecting bugs and having them fight.
Pokemon also isn't particularly original. Keeping monsters miniaturized in pokeballs is probably "borrowed" from one of the Ultraman series (or spinoffs) where the hero did the exact same thing. And that was at least 20 years before Pokemon existed. It is rich Nintendo tries to claim all this infringement when they borrowed heavily for their own IP. Donkey Kong is clearly at least inspired by King Kong (something which they had to fight for when they were sued for infringement)

Between bad tv seasons and bad games for quite some time now, and with Ash becoming a master and the show ending, Nintendo is scared and lashing out at anything even hinting any resemblance of Pokemon that is successful. It's impossible to ban a genned Pokémon that passes all legitimacy tests since that's just manipulated data that makes it seem that the person caught it or that person may have duplicated a mon they already caught. Pokémon with advantages you cannot achieve in game however are absolutely banned and you can't use them in tournaments. Nowadays it's so easy to max out a Pokémon it doesn't bother me since your maxed out mon will have the same stats as the genned one.

Or like eve online suing no man's sky because they both have spaceships and planets that you can travel between.
    The whole lawsuit is absurd.
While we're at it. In regards to combining 2 creatures to get a stronger offspring there's tons of games that do that.
Pokemon doesn't own the concept of breeding and offspring mutation.
That's as Natural as you can get.
Nintendo might as well sue ova magika because you can breed 2 blobs to get a new blob with beneficial attributes like mutations Makin it immune to silent status effects.

Boom, no longer patent infringing, while also not getting rid of any specific mechanics.

Unfortunately, what people are missing is that palworld is being sued in a Japanese court. The issue with a japanese court and public opinion over at japan is that they are all taking a very tone deaf approach to this issue. Instead of seeing Nintendo for the predatory corporation that it objectively is, they are actually siding with nintendo and overwhelmingly agree that it's justified for nintendo to shut the company down. Why? because their CEO did not bend the knee like a lowly nintendo drone, apologized, and let Nintendo step all over them retroactively.
I am not kidding. It is so bad they think the fine and injunction is a "kind move" by nintendo and that pocket pair should take it, then publicly apologize as nintendo shuts them down. Then Japan wonders why the birth rate is so low when they treat anyone who tries to innovate or present good ideas worse than simply a nail that needs to be hammered down. No, they act more like crabs in a bucket, preying on any who tries to strive for more like not being food for a fisherman for example. Kind of ironic since Japan likes persona games that critics the exact issue with Japanese culture.

Nintendo have long had a reputation of aggressive lawsuits to shut down things they don't like. Yes Pokémon is one of the well know monster catcher games but they aren't the only ones and they have got lazy and very formulaic with their games.
Pokémon had years to do something similar to pal world but they didn't, and instead of welcoming fresh ideas into the genre and the competition from other monster catcher games they are trying to shut them down.
