    Oh. My. God. Finally there's someone on youtube who actually gives decent packing advice. Thanks for the video this is one of the best on youtube.

      Hi Phil, know what you mean, too many Divas out there who think that packing means shoving high-fashion, plus the dog!, into large oversized bags. Many carry as much in their personal item totes as I pack in my one month carry on. Lindsay's on the right path but way overdoing the underwear! Happy travels:)

    Granted, this video was made almost 3 years ago but "packing items that you aren't too attached to" hit home for me. It was the same advice given to me a long time ago, and I had forgotten. Game Changer. Thanks!

    I really love your "you don't need this and you don't need that" approach instead of the usual "you need this and you need that" approach.

    Watched this video last night and loved it. This is pretty much how I have packed as a traveler, with the exception of trying to stuff my electronics in the backpack also. It seems by the time I board the plane, there is not much room left in the overhead compartment. I also like to have everything at my feet, so that as soon as that bird touches down, I'm outta there.
    The thing that made me laugh about your video is buying stuff when you get there. Sometimes we think the place we are going to is on another planet. I'll never forget on one of my first solo trips from Texas to California, needing some random toiletry, and lo and behold, even in California they have Walmart!
    One of the pieces of advice I had heard a long time ago about traveling to Europe was to pack for a normal vacation. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.

    • @princesswearshikingboots4479
      @princesswearshikingboots4479 7 років тому +2

      Hi Bethany, 1/2 the clothes and 2 x the money is about right! I'd go as far as 1/3 of the clothes - leaves room for purchases:)

    I am starting my traveling adventure in Jan! Cali-> Big Island. I've offically sold all of my belongings execpt what fits in my 75 liter backpacking gear. This video came at the perfect timing! You convinced me to repack for my 45 ltr and get rid of way more stuff because im really nervous about having to check most all of my belongings every time I fly. Honestly the 75 ltr backpack just has me saying "So much room for activities!" lol. Keep it up girl. These vids are great.

      Hi Bo, single bag’s the travel holy grail. Most of us start with single carry on and a personal item. Lindsay's on the right track. Too much underwear though. Love her philosophy on passing items on as you travel. We do this with hiking poles which are a no-no with carry on. Happy travels:)

      Hi Megan, a heads-up from another Aussie, 5 bras and 7 underwear are way too much - consider ExOfficio underwear - I travel/hike the world with 2 pairs only, lol (they are super comfy, lightweight and dry overnight). I extra bra if you're travelling during summer. Less underwear more room for other choices. Happy Travels:)

    This is EXACTLY how we want to travel. I have a bad back so I have to get a roller bag. My question is....can I bring that and the bag you had to put my pc, camera, tech stuff, etc...and put that one under the seat? Do they charge to have 2 bags like that? We definitely don't want to be bringing suitecases that can get lost, stolen and not to mention....just heavy and bulky. We want to travel light like you have in this video. Thanks for all the tips :) Melody

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому +4

      Living Free Forever yes! You should be able to - most airlines allow "a bag and personal item" as carry on so your roller suitcase (presuming it's small enough to be considered carry on) is your "carry on" and your pack (it can even be a regular backpack, purse or pouch like I have) as your "personal item." The roller (or big bag) goes in overhead and the smaller bag goes under the seat. Hope this helps!

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому +2

      Living Free Forever but please check before you fly because different airlines have different rules just to be sure!

    • @LivingFree207
      @LivingFree207 7 років тому +1

      Lindsay Mc Yes, I was thinking I better get the smallest(strictest) size of all airlines so it will be good for ANY airline because I won't know who I will be flying with. I better remember this. Thank you! :)

    It's amazing that you could fit all this in your backpack :) But I learned that a lot of airlines weigh your carry on and very often you're not allowed more than 5 oder 7 kilos. Could you tell us how heavy your backpack was? :) Because I think THAT really is the tricky part when it comes to traveling with a carry on only

    Hey Lindsay, loving your videos. I saw the one about getting your gopro stolen..bummer. thanks you for heads up. I will be traveling solo starting in March and my first country is India. Question for you. My cross body bag has these cable zippers that I can use a small lock on them, so essentially I can tie the cable loop from the main pocket and the cable loop from the side pocket together. It's a nike bag that has traveled with me all over. Do you think its a good idea to walk around with a small lock on my bag? or do you think I will bring more attention?

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому +1

      Hi Yamileh, thanks so much! YES! Use the lock, lol. I don't think it will call too much attention to yourself. I'm in India right now again and some little kids just tried to pick pocket me by "accidentally" bumping into me last night. So annoying! Luckily, I didn't have anything in my pockets (don't keep anything in your pockets, front or back!) Also, because I'm here and dealing with this all right now, here are a few other tips - don't listen anyone that says you need to go to a "Tourist Information Office" because your hotel, or the road or whatever is closed - it's a scam. You don't. Just don't listen to them, walk away and find another way to get where you are going. My boyfriend and I were trying to walk across a train platform to Paharaganj 2 a few days ago and a guy in uniform told us we couldn't go there because of dengue fever or some bullshit. He told us to take a auto-rickshaw to the Tourist Information office but I already knew it's a scam. Basically, there are rickshaw drivers waiting for you and they'll drive you around pretending like they can't find it and charge you a ton of money. We found another way to walk to Paharaganj and of course, everything was fine. Also, don't eat anything or get in a rickshaw BEFORE you agree on a price and be VERY clear exactly what the price is. We literally just had this happen to us this AM, I always ask how much chai and somosas cost before I eat them (chai is 10 rupees and somosas are 10 rupees each) but the ONE time I forgot, we ate 4 somosa and had 2 chais and the guy charged us 220 RUPEES! It should have been 60 rupees, such a dick. Don't make my mistake, lol. India is WONDERFUL but crazy. Embrace the chaos and trust your gut (also, go to McLeod Ganj and Hampi, my favorite places in all of India) :) Happy travels!

    Two things I'd add as essentials:1) a pair of glasses if you wear contacts, you don't know when or if you're gonna lose them and 2) a small first aid kit with stuff for blisters and "Tourista", you can fit everything you'd need for that in a small pencil pouch and have room left over

    okay, so i just discovered your channel and I absolutely love it! I'm only 16 and I know it's pretty young (but i live in Paris and here in France, you are considered as an adult when you're 18 and not 21 like in the US). To begin, i'd like to spent two month or so during the sumer holidays exploring the world right before starting high school ( so in two years). But there is still something i don't understand very well: i get that during a normal day, you can live for less then 30 box, but I'm wondering: do you include the price of the plane tickets? And did you book every single plane tickets before leaving your home or just before leaving the country you were in? (i'm not sure I'm being very clear, it can sometimes be hard to express myself in English)
    Anyways, everything you do on this channel is amazing and very hep full! thank you for that!!

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому +4

      Hi Jeanne, thanks so much and so awesome that you're getting into travel so early! For my series $30 a Day did include the flights but because I was so flexible, I bought the cheapest flights at the cheapest times so they didn't cost much. If you go somewhere inexpensive like South East Asia and can fly there at a flexible time you can get a super cheap flight there and spend as little as $10 a day on food and housing in places like Chiang Mai and HCMC. Happy travels!

Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Do you recommend exchanging currency in your country before leaving or after at an airport ATM?
    I've read mixed reviews

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому +1

      So... I NEVER get currency beforehand. I would just always just pull out money out of the ATM in the new country after I land... And then I just got JAMMED in India during their currency problem. I was expecting to be able to take money out of the ATM and I couldn't because they were having a money crisis and the ATMs were out of money. I ended up in a pretty frustrating situation. I think it's smart to carry some easily traded currency (USD or Euro) so you can exchange if you need to but I still would only exchange it after I arrive in the new country. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Dear Lindsay, I have 2 simple questions:
    How many liters of capacity has your backpack?
    As you said, while travelling you carried on all the time with your value stuff, however when you were doing one day trip, do you felt safe leaving all your stuff simple locked at the hostel? I mean, they could take your staff anyway and just unlocked somewhere else :P Or is there any other trick?

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому

      Hi Marta! Not sure how many liters my backpack was because it's just a regular school backpack. It's not big at all though, sorry I can't be more helpful on that. I always just left my stuff locked up at the hostel. Most have lockers that you can lock (you have to have your own lock) - I'd leave my backpack with my clothes out if the locker was small and just lock up my expensive stuff like my camera, laptop, passport, etc. I never had any problems! Some hostels didn't have lockers and I just left my stuff on or next to my bed. I don't know if I would recommend that but I was fine and never had anything stolen. Thanks for watching and happy travels!

    Hey! I’m a little confused about the contact lenses. I use daily contacts and am travelling with a carry-on only. Do they have to go in the quart size bag with other liquids or they can be in a separate bag? Thanks :)

      krystal mathieu hi Krystal, dailys count as a liquid so you will have to pull them out when you go through security but they are allowed :)

    Was it difficult carrying round that laptop? debating whether or not to take mine as going round india for six months

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому +2

      Depends. Laptops are definitely an added thing to carry and keep track of but for me, the pros WAY out weighed the cons. If you can't live without your laptop (like for me, I need it to edit videos) than it makes sense to take but if you can get away with just using your smart phone or a smartphone and a tablet, I would save the headache and just take those. Less to track, less to lose but totally depends on your tech needs while traveling.

    The only issue I have is that I am plus size and I have big feet. I would love buying clothes in other countries, but I feel like I won’t be able to find anything in my size so packing enough for like a 3/4 weeks is a big thing and I am not sure how to handle it. I mean I packed enough clothes for a week and 4 pairs of shoes with other necessities in a carry on but I feel like I need to pack more.

      @princesswearshikingboots4479 7 років тому +1

      Hi Jamie, as a serious traveller I think it's a good idea to know the weight of your bag. Airlines are clamping down and remember if you are changing airlines the lowest weight & linear dimensions apply. I make a list so I pretty much know where I stand during a trip - keeps it stress-free. I would not take the risk if you don't want to check a bag. Happy travels:)

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  7 років тому +1

      There is bottled water everywhere now - even in rural villages you'll be able to find bottles or little plastic baggies of clean water. Happy travels!

    • @princesswearshikingboots4479
      @princesswearshikingboots4479 7 років тому

      Hi Deloris, Lindsay's quite right. You might want to consider beer in India - it's cold and pasturised and often cheaper and more reliable than water (sometimes bottles are refilled and you don't know!). In the heat it's an attractive option and goes well with Indian food. Happy Travels:)

    Mostly while traveling I over pack my carry on because it doesn't make sense to buy alleged the clothes you need if you are only away for a few weeks:-)

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  8 років тому

      For sure! I still tend to pack VERY little for a 2 week trip because I figure if I did forget anything, unless it's SUPER important, I can make it through a 2 weeks without it... or if I do need to buy something (like a jacket, boots, bathing suit etc) I try to buy something I like and is different from what I already have at home so then at least it's just like I've added something to my wardrobe once I travel back home, lol.

    • @gesamarie2824
      @gesamarie2824 8 років тому

      Mostly I travel together with my family by car so it is okay to pack enough stuff .The last 2 year I have been to Ireland to an activity camp and it was somewhere in the nowhere so no connection to anything. Also you needed many clothes because it was very rainy and it wouldn't dry in one day😅

    why not boots? I like to bring one pair of sandals and one pair of leather boots that double as every day boots and hikig boots and can be dressed up or down :)

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607  8 років тому

      That works too! For me, I would bring hiking boots and then find myself mostly wearing sandals or Chucks because they were more comfortable for everyday wear. When I thought about how heavy my boots were vs how often I wore them, I didn't think it made much sense so I switched to hiking shoes which have huge tread on the bottom (like boots) but way lighter. They did the job for me and took up half the room, plus I ended up wearing them more because I'd run in them like tennis shoes when I wanted to workout. I also just wore my sandals with little dresses when I wanted to dress up which I didn't do too often anyway. It's totally personal preference though!

    I really want to bring all my leotards. I know its silly but I want to keep them forever and I want to move to NZ, not just visit. At the same time I don't want to lose them, like maybe my mom might move when I'm abroad and might throw them away. I want to put them on my carry on bag just incase the checked bag gets lost during the plane process.

    Admire it but cant do it. I’m going on vacation for Two weeks and im checking in two bags and i have a carryon. I cant do plain clothing. I need some serious choices of clothing. 🤷🏻‍♀️plus makeup is heavy. I wont even be wearing makeup during the day but at night... again.. i need choices. This would work mostly just for minimalist personality types.
