It all starts with John 117. Basically he was kidnaped as a kid and pumped with performance altering drugs and growth hormones. The success rate for transforming a small child into a giant fighting machine is apparently pretty low. So yeah, it’s pretty amazing this guy can even mentally function let alone save the planet. Anyway, as a full grown man, John is 287 pounds (131 kilograms) and stands 6 feet 7 inches tall (about 2 meters). To put it into perspective, Andre the Giant was a 7 foot 4 inches tall (2.24 meters) wrestler from France. Coming in at at 550 lb (255 kg), not only was he tall, but he was massive. So although John is big, he isn't’ that big. What makes Chief so powerful is of course his set of armor. According to lore, “The MJOLNIR powered assault armor is a technologically-advanced combat exoskeleton system designed to vastly improve the strength, speed, agility, and reflexes of a spartan super soldier. This suit then brings John up to 7 feet tall and about 1,000 lb (453 kg), or twice the weight as Andre the giant, but still a little shorter.
After “extensive” research on UA-cam I found a number of videos about the science of Halo, in particular about Master Chief’s armor. The general consensus is that some aspects of the armor is possible to produce and that it would be relatively bullet resistant. Instead, in this video, we’re going to assume that not only does Master Chief exist with his armor containing the same properties in game, but also that the weapons in Halo exist as well. This leapfrogs all of the obvious questions like, “how could a man control a suit of armor weighing as much as an elephant”, and “could energy shields exist and if so could they stop bullets”. For the record, a few companies are working on energy shields, but they only really work against fire or pressure waves, not projectiles or shrapnel, but we’ll get back to that.
In the game, the sniper rifle fires a 14.5x115 mm armor piercing round with a bullet weight of 64 grams. This round travels at a speed of 1450 meters per second, or 5.5 times the speed of a Boeing 777. It’s based on a Russian cartridge historically used in anti-tank weapons but more recently in anti-air weaponry. In flight, this round has the same energy as a baseball traveling 2154 miles per hour (963 m/s) and Chief’s armor has to catch it. By the way, one sniper round is enough to deplete the shield and another is enough to puncture the titanium armor, which makes sense because it's the energy and equivalent of 38 standard 5.56 rounds. But this means that this bullet needs to go from 1450 meters per second to a dead stop, in 6 inches of energy shield. Because this round is armor piercing, the tip is extremely hard which prevents it from being crushed. This results in a force of 883 kN and a localized pressure of 4.1 Giga Pa (595,000 psi). The fact that the energy field doesn’t puncture under these types of pressures puts it in a league of its own above basically any composite, metallic alloy, or ceramic material known to man.
Because the shield is not rigidly connected to Chief, it’s hard to know exactly how the suit would react to an impact of this magnitude. If the shield did transfer the force onto Chief he would be accelerated backward at the equivalent of nearly 200 earth gravity's but only momentarily. In fact, it’s so quick he would only stumble backwards a few inches. In terms of momentum, it would be like an unarmored person getting hit with a 99 mph fastball. It’s going to hurt but it won’t necessarily knock you off your feet.
In the game though, one sniper shot is enough to fully deplete the energy shield. As the second bullet impacts, the extremely hard core would pierce its way into the titanium armor and through the subsequent layers of the suit. With an impact of this magnitude, there aren’t a lot of materials that could save Chief at this point including titanium armor. Like in real life, chief goes down pretty hard.

It is a good one of a kind product for learning how to design your own Iron Man suit without the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cousin after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical results with it.

Actually, while his armor does make him damn powerfull, saying "what makes him so powerfull is his armor" feels wrong.
He (and his team) could punch people who wore early generation exoskeleton-suits so hard they flew 8 meters back (when he wasn't even 18 years old yet). Keep in mind, while doing this they didn't wear ANY suits or gear. It was barehanded using their own strenght. And that's when they hadn't grown fulyt from their injections and musclegrowth yet.
So yeah, he's fucking insane without the armor too. The armor reacts to his thoughts, so he doesn't really have to move it by his own strength that much. What's required is bonestrength and immense reaction speed to prevent the suit from killing the wearer with its fast and powerfull movements.
The suit is immune to small arms fire, and can take glancing blows from high-caliber armorpenetrating rounds, WITHOUT the energy shield.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but some men in real life who's considered being the alpha male, have some insane amount of muscles and testosterone. My husband's one of those men, he can take on a bull any day.. first I thought it was impossible, then I saw it with my own eyes. How can he be so damn strong? He doesn't even lift. Anyway.. if real men can be insanely powerful, then maybe John was naturally strong before his injections.
There's also a difference in bone strength, naturally strong bones are almost indestructible.

Kjernekar Truth! also they have super strong dense bones, The muscle tissue surrounding the bone is so strong that it would in some cases, mangle the Spartan II. An extremely painful way to live and die.

+none Well, that's not totally correct. The armor itself was highly resistant to machine gun fire up to 7.62x51mm AP, the modern equivalent of sniper rifle rounds. However a rebel group got their hands on LMGs with a ridiculously fast firing rate and used high performance armor piercing rounds that were designed to damage light tanks. This would cause enough damage that the Spartans had to be careful not to get hit. However, later when Chief was testing an upgraded version of the armor, the Mark V, it managed to deflect 30mm and 50mm autocannon fire, and even withstood the indirect blast of an anti-tank missile.

The Ma5 Assault rifle series in Halo uses 7.62x51mm NATO.
And the sniper rifle the video's author is referring to is the PTRS-41 and PTR-D anti-tank rifles used by the soviet union.

You say he's pretty average in strength and size. No. He punched something bigger than that giant dude, made out of metal with giant guns. It landed 8 metres away. He also accidentally killed 4 trained best of the best marines or ODST's at 15 years old. With armour, thy are super dooper strong. Spartans have been known to use mongooses (basically military grade quad bikes) as hammers until it falls apart. Chief also ran 100kmph or around 60mph I believe. Just after backhanding a missile from a jet fighter. Keep in mid it's an advanced missile far beyond what we have today. It landed a few metres away a only took 3/4 of the shields out. And the shields have been improved since then. The armour is so much better in canon.

If you have read the halo book the fall of reach you would know that the mjolnir armor isnt moved by the host physically, but rather it has a mental link to the host (the same way ai like cortana do) an the armor actually moves when the host thinks about moving it, also increasing reaction time. BUT as a result of this normal humans cant use it because what ever is actually causing it to move is so strong it BREAKS ALL OF THERE BONES! this is whey they need supersoldiers like the spartans, not so much for there increased strength and reaction time but instead durability. also the whole being trained sense childhood thing helps.

+MaximumRageQuit after reading and watching some of the halo materials it does annoy me a bit swing the game theory guys video come up in his evidence, the mark 4 gen 1 was dangerous to standard humans but mark 5 corrected those dangers and besides that we're on gen 2 mark 6 with halo 5 which is a different suit in many aspects
In the video, it makes it seemed like all they did was pump the spartans with steroids and vitamins. They didn't mention the genetic and surgical modifications they had to endure. That was the real reason why so there were so many failures.
How bullet proof is Master Chief? 100% that's why it takes anti-tank shells to penetrate his armor, hell the sniper round is a small artillery shell.

I Dont Care01010101001 Not really. Did you read any halo book or lore? The armor make them more powerful obviously but without it they are stronger, faster and more everything 😂 than a normal human
The neural implants in Chief's head for a link to the armor, like how your nervous system connects your brain to your limbs. The armor pretty much acts like additional muscle, controlled by his brain, so everything is in perfect sync. At full exertion, with his super enhanced muscles and the artificial muscles of the suit, Chief would be able to lift 1 ton (200lbs) without much of a strain on his body. This is why a simple melee attack can kill the incredibly tough Covenant enemies like Elites and Brutes, because when you have a ~1000lb man traveling in excess of 70mph (we can move our limbs faster than we can propell ourselves to run) and all that force is concentrated over the surface area of a fist (probably close to 12in across, SPARTANS have big hands), you get a crazy kinetic energy which would break even the strongest of Sangheili bones in less than a few hits.
I wish you had used the books rather than the games.

+SpacePak well it's just that the games modify it to be fun. like in the books, the armor without shields is pretty much impervious to small arms fire, but that games change that for playability so he can die from a SMG shot to the foot

So much falsity in this video. First, as many pointed out, Master Chief is 6'10 without his armor. You question how he is able to wield his armor; He was enhanced at extreme levels as you stated, but not only was his muscular skeletal system enhanced exponentially, his bones and ligaments were strengthened beyond belief. At the age of 14 or so, without his armor, he had the strength of 5 men. (True Video and in the books, I'm pretty sure it shows and references him repping 500+ lbs on the bench press like it was nothing.) And he was only 14!! So that's why he's able to wield the armor. EVERYTHING about Spartans in the GAMES are seriously dumbed down for gameplay. Chief and Spartans alike can take enormous amounts of punishment and still make it out alive. I have seen several sources claiming Chief can withstand a nuclear blast at near point blank range. He is also seen deflecting tank projectiles with a simple swipe of his hand. Spartans are much stronger, faster and smarter than seen in the games. Equipped with suits, they are at least 10-15 times stronger than the strongest men on earth(think about it, if Chief can withstand a NUCLEAR BLAST, I'm pretty sure that when he is fully equipped he can toss around a few tonnes with relative ease). Spartans can sprint up to 60mph for extended distances(physical enhancements alone make this possible, but suit is made to take most of the workload.) Usain Bolt is the fastest known man on earth, clocking in at 27 mph. He can only maintain this speed for a few moments. Now you know that he is a Hyper-Intelligent superhuman with extreme durability, INCREDIBLE strength..... and he is as fast as a cheetah.
TLDR: This video is full of misinformation; the true specifications are in the books. Spartans are dumb-downed exponentially for gameplay. If you were to see ONE of these Demi-Gods on the battlefield in modern times, you might as well roll over and kiss your ass goodbye.
Edit: Master Chief is also a master of a plethora of Martial arts. He is also an expert marksman with every weapon he can get his hands on.

Zero Cognition First off, the missile was called a scorpion missile, but it was fired from a dropship, and doing what he did nearly killed him even with the suit, and it it also powered, at the start of the chapter he notes how uncomfterable it is when put on, but once kickstarted and powered up isn't even noticable.

Not necessarily. Most of the speed and workload is handled by the armor itself, Spartans would generally move and fight at the same pace with or without the outer titanium shell pieces.
To answer if they can go faster than normal: Spartans can sprint up to about 65mph, albeit doing so tears their Achilles heel and muscles. On average they can run around 35mph - 40mph without difficulty, can push it to around 60 if they need to do a mad dash. (Without risking injury)
Not quite as fast as a Cheetah. Still a 1000lb hulking mass of metal that would pummel anyone's ass into the ground, that can use guns, and is bulletproof essentially...
I meant that the suit is weighed down by the 600-1000 Lbs. of titanium plating, and removing said plating would allow for either a lower energy requirement or significantly amplified physical capabilities in comparison to the Spartans already impressive statistics.
Demolition ranch shot a titanium plate (roughly 1-2" thick) with a .50 BMG API, a pretty similar round and it stopped it. Also this is 500 years in the future so they may be able to produce better quality metals with different properties.

A 14.5mm is twice as powerful as .50 bmg also the Halo Sniper rifle uses armor piercing sabots which goes at a far higher velocity than standard rounds. Higher velocity bullets ignore most material resistance and the insane speed of shaped charges ignores all material resistance (which is why copper shaped charge liners penetrate tanks).
Anything under 25.0mm round doesn't penetrate his armor. Lore-wise. 12.7mm is .50 Caliber. 14.5mm is only about 57. caliber.
The Old Deus Caliber has nothing to do with penetration. 25mm AP penetrates about 47mm of rha at close range and 14.5mm AP penetrates a bit over 40mm at close range. 14.5 apfsds has even better penetration qualities due to the velocity. Even if the round didn't penetrate the first shot doesn't mean the armor is invulnerable to that threat.
But yeah, it was 30mm-50mm, I misspoke.

No regular humans (without somehow adapting to some crazy conditions like extra gravity, but then they wouldn't be normal anyway hence stopping the argument there) can match any of the physical attributes of a SPARTAN-II save for height and weight. The strength of one SPARTAN is easily more than 5 strong humans, while still having a stamina to operate that strength where others would tire out. 5 guys carrying a 500lb couch down a hallway would get tired after a few trips, each man is lifting 100lbs. A SPARTAN could not only make the trip himself, but would be able to do so repeatedly without tiring nearly as fast as the 5 regular human men.

Master Chief can carry the armor, not only because he's been augmented to be stronger, but also because the suit is kind of like a robot, as in it moves with him. It knows exactly what Chief wants to do, because it's connected to his nervous system.
Yeah, it responds to his inputs in sync with his muscles, his neural implant acts like another nervous system when linked to the suit. This means that while exerting his regular muscles, the suit is also working, giving him more than double the strength he would need.
In the Halo lore, its states that Chief is actually 6'10-6'11 without armor, and 7'2 with the armor. And his suit only amplifies his abilities a little, his power comes mostly from his augmentations.

In the books, the shields were immune to most guns. the only reason they pierce shields in the game is because they are using these things called "shredder rounds" that were much more powerful than standard ammunition.
+Enf enf enf I thought they did it for balance reasons. For example the plasma weapons in Halo would actually be better then the human weapons but for the sake of gameplay the human weapons are normally more powerful.

Spartan IIs had procedures/surgeries done to them and John is a Spartan II, Spartan IIIs however did get pumped with drugs.
all Spartans got drugged as part of the enhancements but what you're referring to is that spartan-III Gamma company got a highly illegal drug that made them mentally unstable
+Henry Hopkins I know, Spartan IIIs however did not get surgeries/procedures/implants, they used drugs instead of these surgeries as it was inexpensive compared to the surgeries. Gamma only took additional drugs, they were not the only ones they had took.
+L. Snider I was under the impression they had the same surgical procedures because in the ghosts of onyx book Kurt makes a point of saying that the technology had improved and none of them died during augmentation. The armor the IIIs wore was a lot cheaper but the surgeries weren't

I'm gonna hazard a guess and say that energy shields deflect normal bullets and possibly absorb direct hits from sniper rifles by completely vaporising the round in its shield-ness. Similar to how it protects from plasma weapons.
The energy shields in the Halo universe are designed to absorb energy and not deflect it, like kinetic shields do in Mass Effect

Wait, you mean wearing it? Because... that's already answered. It's an exoskeletan suit. Same way with how the U.S. military and DARPA are experimenting with current powered exo suits whose frames weigh enough that no one would be able to wear them if they weren't powered suits. The exoskeletan keeps the frame upright and keeps the weight off the user. It's less "wearing" the suit than it is "piloting" the suit. It's not like wearing a bunch of metal plates just hanging on your body.
Very good use of graphics and narration. My only critique is for your face cam shots, the warm light from your lights and the cool light from the natural light conflict with one another. Other than that great job keep up the good work!

If you guys are wondering how he is able to wear 1000 pound armor lemme tell you.
Every spartan has a neural adapter on their the back of their heads that connect the suit to the brain so the suit is controlled by thought. So they actually don't feel the weight and it is more of like a second skin.
Sorry lost a bit of respect when you explain how master chief became a super soldier it was not drugs. They were physical and genetic augmentation. ( but i understand for simplification)

The Cool Monkey i can tell you it was far from drugs.. look up the actual lore and you will know what i mean. actually i told you it was more genetic augmentations that's why the used young children. they also directly augmented the Spartans bones so they where nearly indestructible and they did not use drugs for that.
The skeletal system was from metal grafting, while all the other stuff was from growth hormones and protein injections, so in other words drugs.

This is a question. Aren't the games alpha canon? Meaning when other sources produce information that contradict, the games show truth? Bungee = games > than all other source. Can't pick and choose, there is alpha canon and then there is everything else.

I like the new style for these videos, and that shield regeneration animation is absolutely stunning. I love the lore behind the armour and how it can be explained. The thing about the neural interface being able to predict your movement so you don't have to carry the mass of the suit and increase movement speed is awesome. Great video!

There is just one thing that might deplete a lot of this video, John not only has the armor and the shield, he also went through several physical improvements when he went through the Spartan process improving his skeletal and muscle strength/capacity.
Also his suit enhances this to the point where someone who hadn't gone through the Spartan process would break there bones just from movement in one of these suits.
As well halo is a game and half the things that are in it are unrealistic, to either progress the story or make combat more even when realistically chief might... MIGHT be all most unstoppable to the covenant.
Do you think the paint may have some protective effects other than corrosion resistance or decoration.

Chief took a lot of hits in the game, and the only time his armour got damaged was when he fell from space, it took a fall from space to dent/scratch his armour
Halo 5 has a scumbag armour mod called upgraded shields that can survive energy bayonets and deflect sniper and beam rifle shots even if u hit their head

The reason he can carry the armour is the same reason all exposures work
One thing that's pretty amazing is they've somehow managed to reduce the recoil of, basically, a small anti-tank cannon (the sniper rifle), depending on how you classify a cannon, to a level that ordinary marines can easily manage firing it like you would any other rifle.

Spartans are superhuman without their armor. Unbreakable bones, superhuman speed, reflexes, agility, etc. the armor just enhances that.

Master chief survived reentry because he was using a forerunner door as a heat shield.
He survived space because he wasn't out there for very long and his suits environment control systems would have still been operational.
the way they carry the armor is thorough a neural chip implanted in the head of the soldier which is linked to the armors on board computer that actually makes the armor lighter for the user since its just their brain thats making the armor do what it does which makes it in some way logically lighter
The mjornir armor is powered. It powers itself. He doesn't need to carry it. The armor carries him

The Mjolnir armor is motion assisted, the reason wearing a 1000lb suit of armor doesn't really phase Master Chief (or any spartan for that matter) is the suit holds itself up in a way and assists in increasing strength, speed and reaction time among many other things, it also can not be dialed back, it's motion assistance is too much for a normal Human too handle, in one of the books when Spartan John-117 (he wasn't Master Chief at the time) first gets his Mjolnir armor he tries to salute an officer and smashes himself in the face and thinks about how his wrist would be broken if he wasn't a spartan . . . . . there is also an incident in the same book where an ODST is testing out a suit of Mjolnir armor and dies horribly just trying to bend over
Master chief does't carry the "Exosuit" that weighs approximately 1 ton, the armor follows his movements an enhances his performance. He does not physically carry the weight of the armor by himself, the armor is an "Exosuit" which surrounds him, he does not keep the armor erect it follows his movement.
The physics changes when you play on easy. Chief can take a crap ton of sniper rounds on easy before his shield is even fully depleted.
John didn't simply receive performance enhancing drugs, and growth hormones. I mean some on, he had his bones laced with advanced ceramics to make them far stronger, and his new base reflexes are insane.
John was 6'10" outside of his armor, not 6'7" and weighted 290. In the suit, he's 7'4" and 990 lbs. Other perspective is Daniel Cudmore, who plays Colossus in X-men and also played the MC in Forward Unto Dawn is 6'8" and weighed 240.
this would explain why in the first level if you shoot the captain the soldiers take you out easily
Mark IV, V, and VI are titanium, Gen2 is a ceramic-titanium retrofit with nanotechnology integration. It's still unknown whether or not the Mark VIs are ceramic as they have nanotech to upgrade firmware as presented in Halo 4. Also, the Chief's reactions time plays a big role against snipers. When was the last time you saw him twitch after getting shot? Trust me, he'd aimbot his target after hearing a wisp, let alone dive for cover after getting shot. Don't forget, campaign and multiplayer are two different things, he's a walking Mobile Suit Gundam after all.
technically he wasn't frozen in space since there was nothing to transfer his heat.

he has a chip on the back of his neck that connects him to his suit. He doesn't move the armour, he starts the movement and it predicts that movement.
Alaskan Blitz somewhat true. But the armour actually moves him. It cuts the delay from biological limitations.
So the armour actually moves him before his muscles receive the brain signal

On the topic of energy shields, they may just use the same technology as the energy sword (electromagnetically contained plasma) and just vapourish the bullet, though the power strain would be enormous, btw love the channel m8, keep up the good work.

Spartans are also cybernetically augmented, that's how they can use the armour instead of just lying there... And only 33 out of 75 candidates actually survived the surgeries and training

the thing you said about the shield repelling plasma makes a lot of sense because you see it fly back after a hit but you should look to see if chiefs shield instead of deflecting the bullet instead attempts to vaporize it because it would need a lot of energy to do that and would at least melt the bullet and remove A significant portion of the force
If you read the books you would know that he's insanely strong even without the armor.
Halo 4-5 armor has ceramic plates all over the suits under the first layer of the paint and wax-like coat. The jell in the under armor is to regulate body temp, absorb kinetic shock, and when a bullet makes it's way past the jell and into the human it releases painkillers and a clotting agent to help stop bleeding. The energy shield also reduces energy and shock by sending it to the ground and this is done via magnetic and some kind of compression. The shock is taken in like water and then shifted around the user's whole body and then forced away to the ground and then discharged. The user shouldn't feel much but maybe a small amount of feedback pressure at all sides of there body from the shield exploding out. Some spartans also add extra protection like kevlar and extra plates of ceramic but most people over look, haven't unlocked the armor yet, and or cant tell because in pvp most amror is colored heavily with team shades of blue and red to make them stick out.
the soldier doesn't move the armor. the armor itself moves and amplifies the speed and power of the soldier's movements. which is why if a normal person were in the armor, their bones end up snapping from the force.
If it's bulletproof you cannot measure it's power, cause well, it's bulletproof.

Just so you guys know, 14.5 mm is the bullet diameter, while 114mm would be the length of the brass case that holds the gun powder. Either way, that's a lot of powder and kinetic energy.
