    In Gears of War, the COG army outfits their soldiers with the Mark 2 Lancer. The Mark 2 Lancer features a chainsaw bayonet as an upgrade from the original Mark 1’s standard bayonet to help get through the thick skin of the locust horde. Not only is this weapon system extremely cool looking, it’s also very effective. With that said, could the lancer actually exist?
    Asside from the chainsaw bayonet, there’s nothing really keeping the Lancer from existing in the real world. Aside from the somewhat awkward butt stock,p0p0p0 this weapon can technically contain all the moving parts required to be a fully0 operational automatic rifle...except oddly there’s no discharge port for spent casings. Would it be a particularly effective system? It’s hard to tell. The Lancer has a bulky metal construction and a somewhat short barrel length. It might have been better suited as a bullpup design which would not only lengthen the barrel, but could also introduce a more robust stock. The reduction in weight with a composite shell could have assisted in making the weapon more manageable due to the front heavy chainsaw system reducing vertical recoil. To be fair though, this redesign would introduce a lot of flaws that could take years to re-engineer.
    Taking a look at the interior mechanism, it’s clear that some significant modifications would need to be done to allow for a proper feed from the magazine. To accommodate this, a dual sided split magazine was implemented to allow the rounds to pass around the saw blade. Because the saw teeth sit directly where the soldier would traditionally place their hand to grip the front of the rifle, it would be very important to implement a safety feature. Without it, the average number of fingers in the COG army would like be about six or seven. A simple solution would be a pressure plate on the front grip to initiate the saw and a sensor on the pistol grip to validate both hands are safely positioned.
    To better understand the chainsaw bayonet, let’s take a deeper look into the guts of the weapon. The front grip would need to house all and any moving components responsible for the main saw mechanism. From an engineering standpoint, a coupled screw gear system would allow for the desired motion to take place in a somewhat small package, though the torque and power requirements may be too great for our current technology. The rear gear would be a specially welded gear consisting of two smaller gears and a single large gear. The large gear would be sandwiched between the smaller gears which would be powered by a two parallel screw gears. This motion would then cause the large gear to to run the chain. Though this gear and screw system seems complicated, it’s used in many applications including your car’s drive shaft, though in a slightly different configuration.
    So now that the mechanics are somewhat proven as at least plausible, where would the fuel be be stored? In the game, Emulsion is a glowing substance dense with usable energy. Could emulsion be the fuel used to power the chainsaw? This is a hard question to answer since Emulsion is highly volatile compared even to other liquid fuels and the fact it is a 100% fantasy material, its physical properties are mostly undocumented. In fact, other than the sound and smoke appearing when the chainsaw is reved, there’s no indication that the Lancer even consumes fuel at all. The only other alternative would be electric, though the smoke still remains unexplained.
    When you’re talking about future technology, it’s easy to bound the discussion on what exists today. As famously stated, “there are things you know, there are things you know you don’t know, and then there are things you don’t even know that you don’t know”. In the case of the Lancer, there’s a lot there that our technology could piece together and there are some things that come into question, but the solution to the questions may lie within future technology we can’t even conceive yet. Because of that, the Lancer Mark II is not only one of the coolest weapons in modern video games, it’s also one of the most realistic near future weapon (even if it isn’t a practical weapon).

    In the gears story it's stated by Adam Fenix that the lancer's chainsaw is powered by thermal energy captured and stored from the heat produced by firing the weapon, and the "smoke" is actually steam exhaust from using that energy

    According to the Lore, is seems that the MKII Lancer was powered by an electric motor which absorb the heat generated by the shots. Also, while its hard to see, the circular glowing component which located on the front end of the magwell also spins while the shots were fired. May it be a generator that absorbs kinetic energy produced by the expanding gas when the gunpowder goes off?

    • @BenignGamer

      Or basically attach a small electric generator to the bolt; as the bolt moves back and forth as a result of gas operation, it will rotate the generator and provide electricity.

    The safety feature is featured in the game.
    When the player 'revs up' the bayonet they grip a sort of handle that actually 'turns on' the bayonet.
    Pause at 1:55 and you can somewhat see Marcus holding the pistol-grip and the handle, the handle is probably what helps turn on the saw while instead of firing the weapon, the trigger is used to give the go-ahead to the other end of the gun essentially saying "Yeah, my fingers are not under the saw."
    Also, 1:27 is actually pretty spot-on, it'd explain why the thing would jam so much if you didn't properly insert the magazine into the rifle...

    • @rustycr0w
      @rustycr0w 2 роки тому +3

      Yep. In fact in RAAMs Shadow you can see Barrick actually pull the handle back with some force to rev up the chainsaw. My guess is folding out the handle and pulling it back cuts the safety and activates the chainsaw. I don't think the trigger is used; your barrel hand would already be safe as it's on the handle not the barrel.

    At 2:10 the teeth rotate the other way so as to not spray the wielder with blood and gore and I think to also pull you towards and possibly push the enemy over with your weight while you are cutting. Also with that diagram the teeth might get stuck in harder materials such as bone (or locust skin).

    What a modern day Lancer could have to step over the technology gap is a larger hollowed out but stock that also doubles in as a storage space for something like a small Gas container. Which could feed a miniaturized motor in the chainsaw's bayonet system. Not as compact as the GOW version, but could be more plausible and would allow its designer to step over the power gap needed to power the chainsaw without putting on to much weight.

    you could use the firing of the weapon to power the chainsaw so that way you only need a rechargeable battery pack built into the weapon. im not sure how it would work in a technical sense, but you could use the energy created from the firing to charge the bayonet and thus make it usable.

    I think while zombiegoboom's version is very close and pretty cool. If it were military-erized (made soldier proof) it might look surprisingly similar to the lancer. Say we had to make it today. We'd probably start with the venerable FN Scar 17. We'd want the higher caliber 7.62mm because these new bad guys are so tough and the GOW soldiers are obviously enhanced physiologically so they could handle the extra recoil. The chainsaw bayonet would be attached the same way we attach grenade launchers and shotguns to our rifles today. However, it would have to be MUCH more robust to stand up to impacts. The motor would almost have to be electric, but when you look at how far our battery powered tools and yard equipment has come, that's not such a bad thing. the battery pack would have to be attached either as a part of the stock or on the left hand side of the receiver. the motor would go on the front in the hand guard area and would drive the front gear. In the rear section would be the large housing the fits against the magazine well. It would be necessary to house the idler wheel as well as some mechanism to keep the teeth clean from guts, bone and bits of clothing/armor. Pretty grotesque and terrifying but it could definitely work. On the flip side, never bring a knife or even a chainsaw to a gunfight.

  • @Wbfuhn
    @Wbfuhn 8 років тому +13

    Basically you need very durable and dense parts for the chainsaw section alone. You also need teeth that can handle steel without dulling. This would require carbide and titanium for the needed strength to have an effective cut. It has to be a chain with a single blade. It can be built, but someone has to make a power source. Electricity is the most practical as you can dial the voltage and speed of the chainsaw section.

    The lancer does have a handle for it's "chainsaw mode" it's essentially so the soldier can control their sawing action. Their hand is nowhere near the blade during that transaction of blade to locust.

    In terms of the chainsaws kill switch for safety, I read somewhere that the chain won’t move unless the chainsaws handle is unfolded from the side of the gun and “locked” in place so after the chainsaw has been used the user would fold the handle back into place thus locking the chain so it shouldn’t be moving when they go back to a firing configuration

    well technically the stock could house batteries and the chain could be driven by electricity. it wouldn't make the cool sound, but it could at least spin, which is the important part. it could also have a safeguard grip that would cover some of the chain where the soldier would intuitively put hand to hold the weapon with a lip in the front as a safeguard against the hand slipping forward into the spinning mess of sharp blades.

    interesting that my biggest question/skepticism about the Lancer chainsaw wasn't tackled here - the act of chainsawing an enemy would pull so much flesh and debris into the innards of the gun, or at least along the belt. I've wondered from a technical standpoint where this would put the Lancer or any "chainsaw gun" on the feasible map

    late comment, but i want to add, the chainsaw only operates when the lower handle is pulled back, then the trigger is what revs it, so it will not move when the handle is in the forward position, so it is actually safe for the gripping. also the chainsaw was not implemented for killing the locust, it was actually created for destroying things like chains and wood barricades, the cog gov actually told soldiers not to use it on the locust, but of course they did anyway. side note the reason guns in gow dont usually have stocks and the soldiers are able to control recoil is the cog actually uses a kind of steroids for the soldiers that make is past the first deployment, thats also why they look so huge, by definition they are super soldiers.

    A lot of the smoke coming from the Lancers coming from the blade itself from what I can tell the blue lights coming off the lancer might be the energy source and I don't see how a bullet system to eject the bullets wouldn't be that bad because what you could do is have something similar to a bullpup fn2000 where they would be ejected from the bottom the other thing that I could think of with the layout of your magazine look it could be similar as well to revolver but that would mean they would have to be at least 30 different slots

    My random question. Because I didn't type in this question to find this video. I simply asked a different one and it so happened to come up. I was wondering... So, in the games, you see them wearing heavy armor. So they look super bulky. 1. Is the armor actually practical although it looks amazing... To me. But even that isn't the question I typed in. The question is. How do they get their weapons to stay on their backs? Do they have really strong magnets? You know with the size of lancers and the size of well everything in that series, the lancer has got to have some weight to it and it clearly doesn't show exactly how they just stay there mounted on them until they remove them. This was simply a random question that came up while I was playing last night. How in the world are they staying holstered on them.

    I don’t think it would be practical as it could potentially be more dangerous for the operator to have an accident with it and it could get fouled up, damaged and become extra weight. Would be better to just have a robust automatic rifle that serves just that function and ditch the chainsaw thing entirely. Cool concept though.

    The lancer has a handle that needs to be pulled on to get the chainsaw to run. So it does already have this safety feature.

      +Mike Ridolfi I share the same enthusiasm. It also comes with 2,3, judgement. With Xbox's backwards compatibility plan which is neat! I played it round a friends house I forgot about how the bullets don't seem to leave the barrel of the gun but from the middle of the screen that freaked me out a little bit definitely got to pick it up!

    I'm pretty sure that in the Gears of War Books , it is stated that the Chainsaw is actually electric and it uses a battery. Cool video tough :D

  • @thuzan117
    @thuzan117 8 років тому

    3:26 could just be stuff stuck on the teeth getting grinded into smoke, there's alot of moving metal parts moving really fast and getting alot of repeated use, on top of that its unlikely they get many opportunities to clean it during missions since that would be a lengthy complicated process. its most likely battery powered and the smoke is the result of the heat it gives off, combined with any lubricants present and crud thats gotten into the chainsaw as previously stated. Imulsion would be highly impractical and dangerous and the weapon itself has glowing lights so it clearly has some sort of power source. add to that the Gears of War world, I think it's called Sera but I haven't heard the name in ages, is a bit more advanced than us, not by a huge amount, just a decade or two about, maybe more, and its not that implausible, the question is if a chainsaw would really work that well. The old bayonet was supposedly prone to snapping and had trouble penetrating the tough locust hide, personally I think this could have been solved with a simple redesign of the bayonet itself, at least to an extent, though the chainsaw does add alot more versatility to the table. in the books, between gears of war 2 and 3 they actually use the chainsaws on their lancers to cut wood for construction during what they hope is the start of peacetime. a stubbier, rounded blade, something like a sharpened railroad spike or an old british musket bayonet like you see in the colonial era, though obviously thicker, with more focus on a strong point rather than a blade, could do the job when it came to armor piercing. The reason the old bayonet didn't work is likely because, like in our time, its really just a combat knife stuck to the front of the rifle and wasn't intended to pierce through anything that tough. assuming Locust hide to be roughly as tough as either hardened leather or chainmail you'd want to focus in a sharp rounded point, rather than a broad blade as you have in the mark 1 lancer design, with a strong core to prevent it breaking and no protrusions on the sides so it could be pulled out easily and not get stuck. ultimately it would be similar to what they use in the max brooks book world war Z with the SIR.

    Something else that I don’t recall you mention is the weight. It would probably weigh a ton considering how high capacity the mag is plus how big the actual gun is. Add a chainsaw to the end and it’s even heavier. Ah well, every Gears male is bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

  • @invictusprima4437

    There’s already a chainsaw bayonet for the ar15 today we could equip all of are troops with these if we wanted to. The problem with this is that any Benefit of having a chainsaw are outweighed by the dangers it poses to the user. In addition as weapons technology advances into the future ranged weapons will get increasingly better essentially eliminating melee combat and this is already true today as can be seen by the fact that bayonets in modern armies are mostly ceremonial. So we likely will never see this weapon implemented as it’s not necessary. The only way I could see chainsaws being implemented in a future war is if armor technology advances to where ballistics are rendered ineffective and melee becomes an effective strategy again however this is a long way off and by time this happens we will probably have advanced laser technology or micro scaled rail guns
