Highly functioning cruising sailboats are truly a work of art. They require so much time, effort, knowledge, and organization if they are to effectively do their job for thousands of miles of rough seas and hard use. There are so many systems that must work in harmony and it’s only a matter of time until every single one of them stops working. So the highly functioning cruising Sailboat needs regular maintenance and improvements, if it’s going to stand up to the difficult task ahead. Sometimes this is accomplished by tackling massive projects that have huge affects on our lifestyle, but most of the time this is accomplished by incrementally putting in the work, one small project at a time, over the course of years. Now one of the best things about sailing long distances is that you get to do that work in some pretty cool places. We’ll be spending the winter in Turkey and last week we spent some time getting to know this unique country. But now it’s time to get into project mode so that come spring, Atticus will be ready for another season of heavy cruising.

When we cruised Turkey, I ordered a 4 burner/oven which they installed for free. It was truly awesome to see the wife baking off watch on our passages. The problem was we both gained to much weight from all the food she was able to prepare.
Apparently, Turkey has all the boat maintenance/mechanics that a boat owner would need! You chose a great place to Winter.

The Turkish people are really friendly. Glad to see things haven't changed since I was there years ago. Our grandkids got a kick out of Isabella's butterfly safety harness. Great idea for her.

These are not amateur videos, they are professional films. I prefer to watch good UA-camrs to TV shows or movies.
My Dad was an executive chef for 40 years, and he told me "cooking is by taste, baking is a science" need to find a nice bread recipe....nothing wakes up a crew faster than the smell off coffe and fresh baked bread.
I work on a sea going tugboat. Quicker no knead bread works great at sea. Need an oven that goes to 450f though.
i have lerned that cooking is a bit of this and that to taste. baking is exact measurements, 1 cup of flour, what kind, loose or packed? it makes all the difference , Have fun Learning to Bake. 😎

Pediatrician here: I would find a way to prevent Isabella from sticking her head under the bottom of the gate you installed. Might be a choking hazard. Perhaps a large log pillow on velcro or some sort of lee cloth coming up from the bottom.
As a practitioner I was similarly worried that she could squeeze under feet first and get caught at her neck since children’s heads are proportionally larger than their bodies. A pool noodle cut in half sewn into a cloth figure eight, like a door sweep draft protector would probably work to protect that gap.
To wake up to this give me flash backs of being a kid waking up to Saturday morning cartoons. Oh, what joy.❤
Noticed you kept the propane oven stove. As a boat owner and cruiser, I think you made the best choice. However, most UA-cam sailing channels have been going the LiFePo and induction route. Would be an excellent vlog going through your thought process on this and why propane was the better option for you. As always, great vlogs!!!
I too wondered if induction wouldn’t be a more practical alternative (especially in the hotter climates)

You see YT channels remove propane. Make a video. Then it doesn't work out requires too much electricity, and then you see those boats later with propane again
Being one of those who removed propane and went induction. It is great for not having to do refills, worry about leaks etc... However, induction does take a ton of electric needs. If you have LiFePo, TONS of solar, alternators, etc... it works but at anytime your electrical system goes down, or you are having low batteries it sucks not to be able to cook. I think having propane is a good to have still.
I’d like to be able to make a cup of tea (a requisite tool) when the electrical system goes out. I’m a big believer in being able to get ahold of fresh water, cook a hot meal, and flush the toilet, even if the batteries or electrics die.
I have two 5 # propane tanks on my sailboat, and it is very gratifying and surprising how long my propane supply lasts.
Asking your daughter what she's gonna do with the tool was just about the cutest thing i've seen in a long time. You were so enthused at first and then your voice went to such disappointment when you realized she just wanted to eat it. 😂🎉❤

Great use of space I had on a Laser 28 - each step on the stairs lifted up to make a storage box . Top one was for all the stuff you need in the cockpit , like winch handles and sail ties .Bottom one is the biggest and for general use tools . Right there where you can get them in a rush .

I suffer from exactly the same issue with my boat tools. I fix most things myself, and it's a real pain diggin' out my tools for every different project. So I'm going to order the Bosch stackers and an everyday bag right away. I'm also in Turkiye right now on business. Hopefully it'll be there when I get back to Florida in a week or so..BTW, did you know there's an "East Marine " in Turkiye that sells West Marine products? Pretty cool!

You must try making pizza in the oven. I am a holiday sailor and that is what I love to make on a sailboat because it really gets a nice crusty bottom in a sailboat oven. You just have to stack the toppings a bit differently: first the tomato base, then the grated cheese (so that it is very close to the bottom) and after that other toppings. Super good, highly recommend 😉🇫🇮⛵️

Good move you guys hunkering down in Turkey for the winter and getting boat projects done there. Zatara got work done there also and found the work top notch and the prices reasonable. Upgrades so far look great, can’t believe you have been without an oven this long what a game changer. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
What is all of the wires and stuff next to the baby area and bed. She will be into that area next. Put a screen up like the one you just installed.

Regarding how to keep and use tools on board and at sea I had the following "strategy" :
I have my "emergency" tools at hand as they are placed in an extra drawer under the chart table. Not very big but it has a large capacity because it is long . It contains : hammer, knife, screwdrivers, vise grip, wrench, pliers, wire cutters, Exacto knives, hacksaw, extra blades for all tools, scissors, spanners, some electric wire, splicer, and thread and needles, some tape and Ducktape, etc… plus the basic nut and bolts of the same size of those which are on deck, same with an assortment of screws plus a handful of galvanized nails (my boat is made of wood and plywood)… Spanners, wrenches, screwdrivers are only selected for the size of hardware that already on deck.
All the rest (and there is a lot) is stacked below in tool boxes with each tool wrapped in a cloth that has bee thouroughly oiled or greased. Wiping them when in use is sure a mild hassle but I was sick and tired of cleaning my tool off rust each year.
I think that division between "emergency" tools and the others is quite wise. At least it has worked for me : and the BONUS was that I realized that in the long run 80 or 90% of cases I only needed by "drawer" tools even when job was done ashore.
One solution to have a tool always ready at hand.

The thing i like most about Turkish craftsmen they don't act the job is too hard and try to charge extra fee like they do in US. They also have European standards so pretty much same quality with significantly reduced cost. It would be smart making all custom modifications in Turkey even if you can't leave again on time lol.
I have to work on my 28 year old sailboat literally every weekend to keep it in top condition. Which is tough when I am 65. I have replaced the entire plumbing system, the DC system, heating system, and refrigeration system. Plus engine maintenance, bottom paint and general cleaning and polishing.
Great video as always. One idea: Try exploring using less music in the background, especially when Jordan is just explaining stuff. I think it would calm the videos a little bit, and at the same time pronounce scenes when you do use music ❤
baking is mostly chemistry, accurate measurements are important, the rest is touch, sight , and confidence.....example: after making 200 pizzas from scratch, I now make a perfect dough / crust.....it was always passable, but now it is perfect. If you enjoy cooking you will become a great baker with experience. Cheers guys

At 8:15 in the video, I would get any dangling cables or cords away from the play pen area. You don't want that stuff around little kids and babies.
The retractable baby gate is good, but its flexible bottom edge over a mattress creates a potential escape route--I suspect a determined toddler could wriggle under the gate. You might want to add a board at the end of berth to block that route if she does seem likely to escape that way.
I was concerned the flexibility of the bottom with a mattress could be a safety hazard. It’s hard to tell from our limited view. Former trauma nurse so tend to see life with worse case scenarios. Sorry ❤

I sold appliances to builders, and gas ovens have a steeper learning curve compared to electric. Package directions may allow items to burn, so you have to watch until you get used to adjustments. I have one in my camper and we will use a toaster oven whenever possible...
A boat, like an airplane, or even a house will stay in better condition when being used than sitting empty in the water or on the ground. Projects are part of the reason, but even without maintenance, they still need to be used.
Also anything today needs more maintenance than 100 year age because they have far more systems to make life and navigation easier and more comfortable.
Oh man, perfect timing. We just hit a wall with the tool storage conundrum on our boat. I love your solutions! I might get the Veto Pro Pac first, and if (when?) our kit expands beyond that move into the Bosch boxes. I like the fact they could potentially be added one at a time. And I'm especially excited that we might have a great solution without going through a bunch of iterations. Huge thanks for the great suggestions.

@ProjectAtticus With the new stove and the mobile baby, think about Isabella making the stove swing and tipping the contents of pots and pans on top of herself. Keep the stop locked anytime you do not need it to swing. The same issue exists in homes when the baby crawls up on the open stove door and tips the stove over causing the contents of post on the burners to fall on the child. This happen far too often with tragic results. Thanks for the great channel.

Ahoy there sailors! In Türkiye there’s a saying which goes “Don’t consider yourself sired unless you have a daughter”. And you guys are raising that adorable princess as a salty sailor!
You should take up scuba diving too, if you haven’t already. My old man owned a boat and I know how hard it is to keep one. If I ever would brave owning a boat, I’d make sure that she doubles as a diving platform.
I would be a little concerned about her trying to squeeze between the mattress and the bottom of that mesh gate and getting stuck, and possibly choking if her head gets stuck. I almost think a toddler bed rail tucked under the mattress would be safer. Sorry for the unsolicited advice but I couldn’t NOT say anything. Maybe add a bed rail there to keep her from doing that?
Sailing La Vagabonde used a pack-n-play type pop-up tent thing that zipped open on the side when Lenny was a baby. They just put it right on top of the mattress.
I love how part of the organize all the tools project was buy more tools. That's basically the only step to my tool organization process and that's why last time I moved, it took the movers a day to move all the stuff in the house and then a second longer day to move everything in the garage.
Why would you not get the Milwaukee packout? Way more options and much better solution.

Since I’ve been with you guys from the beginning I kinda feel like I know you both. And now with the cutest baby in the Mediterranean I look forward to every Saturday morning. Now, having said all that, I sure wish the videos were a little longer. Most other sailing videos seem to shoot for ~ 30 minutes. Either way I’m hooked.
Fantastic up grades and you're 100% right to allow the Pro's in to do the work ... BUT ... Every child I've ever know have out smarted their parents engineering skills at trying to keep them safe, my money is on Isabella to come up with an escape plan. I spent 30 years fixing computer and always had a soft sided tool bag. Beautiful.
Try an induction cooktop (120 volt); they are very enegy efficient and do not
waste energy heating up the interior space. The cooking pots must be induction
capable (or cast iron works well) Many pans, especially European, are induction
capable and they are not expensive.
You will toss out your propane system - and worries. Induction cook tops are very
controllable and very fast in both heating up and cooling down. Try a single burner
(about $75.00) or a double burner ($140-200). I used a Cuisinart for several weeks
while remodeling our kitchen -- then bought a 4 burner induction cooktop and
prefer it to the premium gas cooktop we had been using. (The 4 burner is 240 volt)

We’ve had the Bosch tool storage system on our boat for about 6 years and are so happy with it. We also extended the dodger sides for extra protection. The only issue is that we instinctively grabbed the trailing edge of the canvas extension as a hand-hold when entering and exiting the cockpit. So, we added stainless steel tubing to the dodger structure that follows the slope of the canvas down to the combing cap. Problem solved. Sail-on!

My favorite video so far! My bias is because in a former life, I was a home builder, home remodeler. LOVED your small hand tool organization solution. PLUS. I recently installed the identical baby gate in my home. My "babies" are actually Chihuahuas. I need to manage their access to parts of the house. I am not a sailor. The videos I like best are the project videos. So I'm looking forward to four months of projects!

Yes!!! This is a huge thing when dealing with a boat. I’ve been looking at making more sewn fabric tool holders. I dig that lock in Bosch idea. Might even become a backrest at the nav station on my passport 40.

Great video and great ideas on organizing tools. We added a pizza stone to the bottom of our oven to moderate and even out temps. It made a Huge difference for baking.

Very cool tool storage idea, gotta figure out something on my boat as well. However I’ll say that when you start modifying a boat to add extra storage space, like what you did in the head in my opinion it’s time to get a bigger boat. Future owner of your boat may not like the internal mods you’ve done hurting your resale value and no matter what you do you’re not gonna make the boat bigger.

For roast: you can use a pressure cooker on the stovetop. Was thinking about getting an instant pot, but we live off grid, so with a bit of research, ended up getting a small pressure cooker from Walmart. I have always made incredible 5-7 hour roasts in the oven. I can cook one just as amazing in under an hour. Sear, throw in veggies, season, and cook for about 45 minutes. Amazing! I would never have believed it. Great for off grid cooking.
