To answer a viewer's question I decided to take a risk and find out how well the HoverAir X1 flying selfie camera can fly over snow.

Now I know vividly what can happen to the X1 flying over unsuitable surfaces without having to risk losing MINE! GREAT demonstration! Thanks a million!
Thanks. There was a brief moment during this experience where I regretted some of my life decisions.
I love how it sounds like R2D2 when it screams.
The same thing happens in lakes. I flew it in a place where the lake was frozen and finally recovered it due to the same phenomenon. It would be nice if it was a place where a person could go in to retrieve it like in the video, but since this product does not have a manual take-off function, it cannot take off even if connected remotely, so it is not easy to go to collect it. I asked if the smartphone app could support a take-off button, but there seemed to be no plans to do so. It does
I was gonna try this in a yacht, good thing i saw this
I think you would almost certainly lose it.
Same here. In low lignt, it's worse. But sunset or sunrise, the horizontal sunrays enhance the snow texture (if any), and it could manage. But keep the range short...just in case....
Thanks for doing that. I live in Canada and unlike a regular drone this can’t handle snow. I was about to buy as an easy option to carry but clearly it’s not up to our climate.
No problem. Time for me to move to the south of France perhaps. These cold winters are a challenge.
Great Video. I tried an orbit over the sand on a beach but a closer than normal wave came in for the end of the orbit under the drone. I am now on my second Hover :) They really can move when they see chance for freedom. Mine went about 100m down the beech and 25m out over water.
Wow, that's unfortunate! Thanks for sharing your sand experience. I probably won't use mine at the beach again.
Yeah, the bottom optical flow camera only works well if it can detect recognizable patterns in the terrain below, otherwise it gets confused and goes whacko. Same thing happens flying over water which reflects light back to the OF camera and the infrared sensors don’t help in these cases but ultrasonic sensors would work better.
Yes, you nailed it. Because of how the optical flow system works, I was convinced it would not work over snow, which is why I did this test. Some people have claimed that it works fine over snow, but I believe those people are using it over snow that has had a lot of activity and footprints, creating enough textural variation for the system to work fairly well.
@@Roos-Reviews Yep, I agree. Good thing you put it to the test showing the actual outcome. Great job.
I was going to try that test too, but (a) I can't currently afford the X1 and (b) it's been around 30C in recent days here, so there is a distinct lack of snow. But it was worth watching your video if only to hear the very expressive sounds it makes with its whiny whirring - almost like it's alive! I also thought as you started, "Hmm, Orbit mode sounds an awful lot like Obit mode. As in Obituary..."
Yes it can be a challenge to find snow when it's 30C, unless you are skiing in Dubai. Haha "Obit mode" indeed would have been a suitable name.
Thanks ...😉
you're doing God's work here, ty
Thanks for sharing!
I've been flying the Hover Air over snow on several occasions, and just like you mention towards the end of your video, it wont fly over snow with little or no texture.
However, if there's enough texture in the snow (tracks, ski tracks, and so on), it may be enough for the Hover Air optics and software to understand what's happening and keep the drone flying. At least that's my experience s far.
Yes you are right.
There is no gps built-in, so lots of conditions you can't hover stably, for example, pure-white floor, water, low-light condition, snow, pure black road etc.
I don’t think I will pick a white one! I wonder if manual mode is different results.
Manual mode still needs the same ground texture to function correctly.
but i guess you can use over snow with manual mode
I wanted this drone to take some shots while kayaking, but too bad it's not made for that.
Would it work in manual mode over snow?
No
That’s odd. I’ve taken it skiing and gotten great videos. I had zero problems with snow.
Could you link me to that footage?
OMG LOL... yep, won't be taking that out on water or snow.
At least you tried. NO!
😂😅😂
