- Today I'm working on a vintage reflective lantern.
I bought it on Ebay for 20 $.
The original battery is missing and the plastic diffuser is broken
It took me 15 days to restore, watch till the end to see this beautiful old lanter in action in the dark.
Thanks a lot for watching ! - Розваги
My heart broke when the glass jar did, but you found something better!
I laughed, because the damage was almost the same as the original.
Spoiler alert 😢
I expected plan B to be sauerkraut or something :D
The before / after is really really impressive, you were very ingenious in replacing this transparent red part 🤩👍
I can’t believe you found something so perfect for the diffuser 😱 excellent job! 🎉
I had no idea you could powder coat glass! That is so cool!
Such a strange lantern but very cool in the same time ! Nice job Nicolas 👍 cheers from Romania 🇷🇴
Thank you David 😉
I'm racking my brain to try to figure out what this was used for back in the day. So unique! Unbelievable restoration is always. 🙌🏻
Signal lantern for trains?
@@mazarinf5130this was my first thought
@@mazarinf5130 That's what I think, too. The reflectors would reflect a train's headlamp, increasing visibility.
@@andyinsdca I wonder if it was supposed to be *on* a boat or train, dangling from something. A stationary lantern wouldn't need all those springs to protect it from banging around on stuff.
It looks a little like a WWII era submarine light. Like from the interior of a U-boat. So maybe something naval (French obviously)?
A lot of these restoration videos are just mud caked pieces that require minimum clean up and then they brag about how they did such a restoration. It's nice to see an actual tear down and not only restoration but repair. Genius fix for the glass globe. And to even go so far as to hammer out each of those tiny dents in the reflector rims. This is exactly what a restoration and repair video should be.
And also I like the way you left the label be. I like having a reminder of the age of the piece that was restored. Great job!
You have boundless patience, an eye for detail and a desire to show what these wonderful old items looked like when new. Bravo to you
2:30 This is the best sandblasting shot I’ve seen so far! So satisfying ❤️
Keep up the good work. I would LOVE to see your shop. I can't imagine how much all of your tools set you back!! But...as the old saying goes, you GOTTA have the right tool for any particular job!!
Very smart to look at a local store for the glass you needed! And how lucky it is to find one that's an exact fit.
You know you're a fan of this channel if, around 10-15s in, you're saying "oh yeah.. that's getting sandblasted and powder coated, that's getting a 3D printed part to replace ... but I don't know HOW he's going to fix that one piece?!!"
Most valid comment ever
I've never seen that glass coloring treatment before. That's one funky lantern!
The choice of the new glass diffuser is a great success, and perfectly matches the overall style of the lantern. As a result, the restored version is even more beautiful than the original.
Woah, the cup from Morocco fit the lamp perfectly, with those ridges. Awesome result in the end! Amazing job, man, as always!
I love when I see old incandescent bulbs replaced with leds! Well done.
What a cool little light im glad u saved it and revamped it i look foward to seeing more of your interesting resterations
You never let us down! The detail and level of skill is amazing PLUS the amount of work that goes into the video itself. Simply staggering. Thank you!
Dan
I'd love to do this kind of work. So glad you share this stuff. I can live vicariously through it.
You are one of the best restorators existing on UA-cam 😊👍.
Fantastic restoration, the glass was genius.
LOVE watching every little piece taken apart and put back together so methodically!! Perfection!! 😊😊😊
That red glass was just perfect! Wow it just matched so well when you powder coated it. Loved it great video!
That lantern is beautiful, just amazingly well done, and the glass "cover", just the perfect find! It probably looks better than when it was new, just a work of art.
It's a win! That's a pretty awesome lamp! I loved the fix for the red lens you replaced. They must have a powder coat for everything.
I wondered about many design issue as I watch this. By the end? Every question I had was answered. Wonderful work OP!
That’s a very interesting lantern. Never seen one like that.
I actually like how you improvised with the diffuser at the end there. And going for a candle glass was a smart move because it’s already designed to handle high heat. So it wouldn’t shatter when you baked on the paint.
Honestly, I would love to have that little lantern hanging in my workshop. But yeah.
That homemade metal finish is ace! You should market that stuff 🙂
How gorgeous that you found such a perfect replacement for the diffusor!
Классная реставрация, безо всякого мыла, всё по делу. Итог на все 💯. Лайк однозначно🙏.
What a brilliant restoration! You amaze me with your attention to detail and resourcefulness. I love your substitution of a candle base for the glass lantern part. One of my favourite restoration channels. Pls keep them coming! Cheers from Australia 🤗🇦🇺
Great work. Loved that you left the label untouched to show its age. 👍
Wow. Enjoyed this SO much. Loved the strip down and layout. Loved each process. Some inspired adaptations and beautiful attention to detail. Your video work is wonderful. Thanks for the comparison of the springs after polishing. What an absolutely lovely and unique lamp. Thrilled you managed to find an even better diffuser…! Very satisfying. Subbed straight away.
This was a magnificent restoration it turned out fabulous well done . Amanda x
Another wonderful job! Thanks for sharing your work❤

Le design de cette lampe est incroyable et avec ta restauration elle est encore plus magnifique 👏
Again, you do what looks to be impossible. Beautiful piece, this was art. ❤
What a neat lantern, great job on the restoration!!! 😃
Outstanding Craftsmanship! Thank you for sharing this!
9:06 A thoughtful decision. 👍
I really like the diffuser! This is a great restoration.
That's some serious scrub action. Kudos.
Nice to see you upgrade the bulb into LED. Now the 1950 lamp is updated to the latest technology. Cool!
Greetings and hats off from Norway! Man I´m glad this channel crossed my UA-cam path. This has to be one of the best restoration channels on the platform. So genuine! Besides the obvious, your craftsmanship, skills and attention to details - the footage and editing are just superb. Your videos are inspiring, educational, fun and relaxing to watch. Thank you, and keep up to good work!
What a phenomenal restoration! 👍
Superb demonstration of your skills. An entertaining watch.
Awesome work it's cool to see such old things id never otherwise known existed
This lantern was made to be seen from all possible angles, wherever it was hung on. Industrial use for sure. Either for trains or ships I assume. Those coils are protecting the reflectors and body in general against bumps and stuff. The cage for the glass is self explanatory. I could imagine this hanging at the end of a train car, kinda free spinning at the roof.
Oh, they could have been hung on railway barriers back then! At night, you'll see them from afar when raised, signaling a raiload crossing, also visible for trains. When lowered, you see them hanging close above the road, with the barriers closed and the reflectors are shining from the cars headlights for additional safety. And it doesn't matter if there is wind or something because the lantern is symmetrical on all sides.
Whatever the purpose of this item once was, it can now live on 😊
You make my favorite restoration content because you are proficient in many skills, have very clean editing, and you manage to find wonderfully unique pieces to restore. It is a joy to watch your work. Thank you!
Yeah. OTND and My Mechanics are the good ones. The rest are knockoffs.
That's a masterful restoration!
You do nice work. I would recommend looking into a nickel plating setup. Keep up the good work.
Good job mister beautifully restored well done
Merci pour cette vidéo !!! Tellement satisfaisant de voir ces petits morceaux d'histoire reprendre vie !
Thanks for posting! :) (Edit: re-watching this video. Noticed how much your editing has evolved! Great job! The flow is wonderful. Sped up @ the right moments and brings us back in right when necessary to continue the story! Keep it up!)
The replacement diffuser was a better choice than the original. You improved the design and brought it up to date with the lithium batteries and the LED bulb. Congratulations on the great work!
I wonder, though, why it had springs around the outside.
I think the springs were there to give some protection to the reflective lights
Some LEDs will break when powered on reverse polarity, and so the only thing I would recommend you add, is a diode in series with the lamp.
Other than that, very well done. I especially liked your solution for replacing the red lens 😀
Love your work and videos so so much! Simply fantastic! 👏👏👏
Spectacular restoration !!!!!!!!!!!!
What an incredibly cool light 🧡
Well done. Once again great restoration. 👍👍👍
Always have a Plan B - nicely done!
it looked way better with that cup than the original piece of plastic that was in there. great job. new sub
Thank you for sharing this. I don't have the tools to do all of that but at least now i know some tricks to repairs things. Cheers
Excellent restoration. Cool idea to replace the original diffuser.
I think it would be very inconvenient to change the batteries though. Also the box for batteries looks a bit high - they may pop out of the holders on impact
Yet another bang up, top job dude 👏👏👏. Thanks loads 🙏. 😎
Excellent work, good thinking. Salud de Argentina. 😊😊😊
this may sound like a comment a friend who came over to your house the first time would say but you have the coolest stuff at your house
I was going to say, "Nice work on the reflectors," but then I saw how you hid the switch, so I had to say nice work on both!
I really like this project and outcome.
Excellent hard work, and intelligence.
Very nice restoration 👍👍
Well done ! Nice solution!
Amazing restore as usual!!
superb very impressive work as usual .
Nice work, as always. Perhaps it could do with a little counterweight opposite of the battery holder to get it balanced again...
The glass cutter normally has a ball on the back where it is used to lightly tap where the cut has just been made to finish cutting, most of the time it comes off perfect, My father usually cuts mirrors and it really works. ☝🏽❤️
13:10 I never new that you could do that to glass so pretty cool 😎
This was a fantastic restoration.
I have a feeling that this might have been a port light (hence red) used in the fishing industry.
I just watch your videos because I think they are satisfying
C'est la première vidéo que je visionne de chez vous et c'est la grande classe. Félicitations et excellentes continuations !
Amazing work as always
Beautiful job, that looks fantastic!
That thing is beautiful 👍😀
That looks like something from Doctor Who 😁 I love it!
That switch placement! Nice :)
Looks amazing! True to the original but even better!
It looks great and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!!
I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up👍
Absolutely beautiful
execelnt restoration with the perfect choices.
When you don't succeed in replacing the glass, then you buy a glass of the same size and make it in a similar color, that's a brilliant idea 🍻
Amazing restoration.
I ❤ all Your videos!
Just amazing work .
Amazing Restoration 👍🏻👍🏽👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Beautiful 😊
Groovy, baby! So, you got yourself a vintage reflective lantern, huh? Looks like it's been through a few battles, just like me. Bet it's seen its fair share of dark nights and creepy corners.
Missing battery, broken diffuser... sounds like it's been through the wringer. But hey, nothing a little elbow grease and chainsaw action can't fix, am I right?
Took you 15 days to restore? That's dedication, pal. I respect that. Can't wait to see this bad boy in action, lighting up the darkness like a beacon of hope in a world gone mad.
Thanks for sharing your restoration journey with us. Now, excuse me while I go battle some deadites and save the world... again. Keep on fighting the good fight, and remember, hail to the king, baby!
Amazing, as always. Thanks for showing us the times when everything didn't go exactly according to plan, and how you dealt with that. It's a shame the light doesn't come out of the six round bits at the top. What are they there for? Oh, and I assume the springs are to stop the glass from breaking if the light bumps against something?
Great work.
Nice job. From the Netherlands
