Entry Level DSLR Scene Modes and Effects

  • I am not a big fan of using fully auto on any DSLR unless absolutely necessary (i.e. handing the camera over to someone for a quick photo). I recently created a video on the fearsome four (P, S, A, and M modes) which generated a bunch of questions regarding the other modes on the dial.
    Most entry level DSLR cameras have a variety of scene modes (i.e. portrait mode, sport mode, landscape mode, kid mode, night mode, etc.) and effects (i.e. night vision, super vivid, toy camera, selective color, etc.). In this video I use the Nikon D3400 as a demo to illustrate these options.
    NOTE: Effects are processed in camera and the camera does not save the original non-impacted image. This is why I like to apply any effects in post processing outside the camera.

    I've had the D3400 for 3 years and never really bothered with anything outside of auto. Your videos are truly worth the time, straight to the point and easy to follow. I just updated the firmware today after watching your other video! Yes, I subscribed too!! Great job, keep it up!!

    Another great video! I got a D3400 for Christmas and you have been my main teacher so far so I thank you for that. I am really looking forward to your video showcasing Lightroom. I have been using Photoshop for years but Lightroom seems to be a bit more user friendly and easier on storage space. Not only would it be nice to learn how to edit photos, but how collections work with presets and multiple versions of photos would be nice as well. Thanks again! I was excited to see your videos from IMS this year. I go to the track every year and I wanted a nice camera for that as well. I may need a better lens to zoom in on the cars from the stands though.

      Hello - thanks for the post and feedback!:) Very cool on multiple fronts (photoshop, lightroom, and IMS):). I have used photoshop for many years on various projects. The program is nice when you really want to get your hands dirty. Although I have used it for a long time, I feel as if there is always something new to learn!:) Lightroom is the way to go when managing photos IMO. I have used various post processing packages over the years but prefer Lightroom for now:). Glad you caught my IMS video!:) I was in the pits during race day and caught some awesome photos of #88 (I had lunch with the driver (Bryan Clauson (RIP)) and his fiance on one of the qualification days (seemed like a good guy)). Various sponsors caught my work and invited me to follow #88 to other venues but I had other obligations. Nonetheless, they reached out to me already about the 2017 race season. There is a good chance I will be back again:).

      Thanks for the post!:) I plan to discuss post processing and will touch on Lightroom to some extent. Lightroom is where you can polish images as much or as little as you like:). I have always view post processing as another creative outlet. The camera and composition create the foundation of the image whereas post processing gives it finesse:).

      Sorry for the late reply. I am now doing a trial with Lightroom and am enjoying it so far. I think I will end up subscribing to it. That is very cool that you got to sit down with Bryan Clauson. He seemed like a great guy. It's not too often that drivers come from the dirt tracks and try their hand at Indy anymore. Hopefully you get to go again next year. If you are there during qualifying weekend, you may see with a cooler...and now my camera!

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Hello - thank you for the feedback and question:). I am not certain I would go with a prime lens for landscape. This is not to say you couldn't:). I typically run with a zoom of some sort. One zoom to consider might be the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 ... I have shot landscapes with various lenses (even a fixed 50 (which is a great lens along with the fixed 35 in my opinion)).

    So which effect do u suggest to get most accurate color for makeup related video? Will the potrait mode work best?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 років тому +1

      If you are going with a scene effect, I would lean towards portrait for makeup. Since color is important to makeup photos, ensure the white balance is accurate. Most people will set the white balance to auto which is fine and tends to work well in my opinion. If you shoot in raw and post edit in lightroom, you can easily change the white balance if needed - just a quick thought:).

    Hello Sir...your videos are amazing :) I am still in a fix whether to buy d3300 or d3400 as I do not see much utility of SnapBridge feature for me....Please suggest whether I will be missing out on something important if I go for d3300 over d3400....Thanks again for your videos.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Hello and thanks for the post/feedback!:) If both were the same cost, I would go for the D3400. If you can get the D3300 cheaper, go for it as you will not be missing out on much. The differences between the D3300 and D3400 do not impact image quality rather they deal with snapbridge (included on the D3400), mic jack (included on the D3300), sensor cleaner (included on the D3300), and battery life (much better on the D3400 (1200 shots vs 700 shots on the D3300)). Hope this helps!:)

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому +1

      Thank you for the post/question:). I would suggest using Aperture mode with the lowest number aperture to create a relatively soft background. If your camera indicates the image will be underexposed, raise the ISO (if not using auto ISO).

    Your video was very informative and simple to understand. I tried some shots following your inputs in this video and many came out really well. I use Nikon D5300 and the shot was at 200mm focal length, shutter speed 1/125, aperture f/5.6 and ISO 6400. I have a question when I took shots of a dance performance I chose shutter mode to freeze the action. I was able to get really good shots, but when I tried to zoom the picture, I was able to see a lot of noise. I think the camera chose a higher ISO value. How can I reduce the noise?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 років тому

      Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) Sounds like you are on the right path and have encountered one of the challenges in low light photography:). If you want to freeze action in low light, you will need to open the aperture and increase the ISO. The higher the ISO, the more noise you have. This is where a full frame sensor can help. Regardless of sensor, using a lens with a wide aperture is ideal (f/1.8 for example). Finding a zoom lens with a wide aperture will cost a good amount of money. The most affordable route is using the fixed 50 on a crop sense with f/1.8 (many ask if I had to choose a fixed 35 vs fixed 50, which one and why - I typically lean towards the fixed 50 ( amzn.to/2kD7EkF ) just so I can have extra reach). Another good option is to use noise reduction in post edit. Adobe Lightroom has a great noise reduction feature ( ua-cam.com/video/pKnpLb32j1w/v-deo.html ). Hope all this helps!:)

    • @dakshinamoorthy2014

      @@RealWorld I have been looking for a prime lens for a while now. I think its time to invest in it. Thanks for your inputs, it's very helpful. Can you make a video on bird photography as well? I got a really got shot of a Blue Jay with its beautiful wingspan, but not able to zoom as it gets distorted. The shot was taken with shutter priority mode at 1/2000 sec, f/5.0 and ISO3200. ISO was set to automatic above 1/160sec. Any suggestions for this type of shots?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 років тому +1

      @@dakshinamoorthy2014 Birds are always a challenge!:) Many bird photographers will spray and pray - take a bunch of consecutive shots and hope to get one or two keepers:). The high shutter speed is a must to freeze flight and a wide open aperture will allow more light which should allow for a lower ISO but the depth of field will be shallow. Focus mode is another consideration - consider 3D mode as this will try to track the subject in all directions:).

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Hello Carol - not a problem:). Settings are easy to change and meant to be changed often depending on the situation. Nonetheless, if you want to force all settings, you will want to be in M mode (M is manual). Manual mode will allow you to set the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. You can also go into the S mode (shutter priority) or A mode (aperture priority) to control shutter and aperture respectively. If you got back into Auto, the camera will handle everything and you will not be able to change anything:). If you were in Manual and went to Auto and back to Manual, the original settings in the Manual should still be there.

    Great videos. I got my wife the d3400 and pointed her towards your how to videos. A thought about the post processing. I have Gimp 2.8 as well as RawTherapee since they are free versions. I know there are probably people that have purchased or subscribed to Adobe PS and or Lightroom but those sure aren't in the cards for me due to the crazy price. I think most of the concepts are similar though so maybe give guidance with regards to the freeware and not focus primarily on photoshop or Lightroom. Keep up the videos and I look forward to watching and learning more about DSLR photography.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому +1

      Hello Jim - welcome to the channel and thank you for the post/feedback!:) Good timing regarding Lightroom, RawThereapee, and Gimp!:) I plan to create a video on post process raw images and will touch on Lightroom (using an older version). I fully appreciate various open source editing tools like Gimp, RawThereapee, and Photoscape X ... these tools can do the job as well but may be overwhelming for some/most beginners (i.e. RawThereapee is loaded with features but I suspect most will be intimidated and shutdown:)). Nonetheless, I may create a separate video on free open source options like RawThereapee and hit the high points attempting to stay focused and keep it simple:).

      i would consider the D3300 and D3400 over the 1300D. Both Nikon's offer a better resolution and lack the AA filter (anti-aliasing filter - this filter tends to make images softer). Is there a kit lens with the D3400? if not, consider going with the D3300. The D3300 and D3400 are identical regarding image quality. The D3400 has bluetooth and lacks the external mic port.

    • @parthshah795

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому +1

      Appears to be a relatively good savings by going with the D3300. This is because Nikon discontinued the D3300 in place of the D3400. They both produced the same image quality (they have the same sensor size and resolution) and have a few minor differences ... bluetooth (found in the D3400 but not the D3300 (not a big deal in my opinion)), external mic port (found in the D3300 but not the D3400 (this can be nice to have)), auto sensor cleaner (found in the D3300 but not the D3400 (not a huge deal in my opinion)), and battery life (1200 shots in the D3400 vs 700 shots in the D3300). Given the cost, I would lean towards the D3300.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      This is an interesting comparison. The D5200 has an articulating screen which can be very nice/handy for various reasons. In addition, the D5200 has more focal points (39 vs 11) which can be nice to track action and/or fine tune your focus without the need to recompose the shot (not a huge issue for me ). The D3400 has a much better battery life (1200 shots vs 500) and lacks the AA filter (the AA filter is a low pass filter which many photographers do not like (AA filters tend to make images a bit softer)). If the articulating screen is important to you, go for the D5200. If not, go for the D3400:).

The D5100 has an articulating screen and external mic port over the D3400, but the D3400 offers a higher resolution, much better battery life (1200 shots vs 660), much higher ISO, and removal of the AA filter (which tend to make images slightly sharper).

    I was impressed that your camera was still functioning at a low power level. Two things with my D3400: (1) After taking a shot, the screen has moving striations or a grid that seems to follow my eyes. (2) The exposure compensation button appears to be inconsistent, meaning sometimes it works and sometimes not. Also, I curious to know why this release from Nikon is often referred to as "Entry Level." Could it because there a fewer external controls than on other models? Thanks again for the video, it is extremely useful. Adios, Tony

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Hello Tony - welcome to the channel and thank you for the post!:) Not certain what to make of the grid but I will state that I rarely shoot in live view:). I used live view for the video so I better demonstrate the settings, etc. I use the viewfinder 99% of the time:). Regarding exposure compensation - exposure compensation will not work in all modes (works in P, S, and A). Are you finding inconsistencies in one particular mode? Regarding entry level reference ... all manufactures want to entice new users into the DSLR/mirrorless market. By calling the camera 'entry level', they are in a better position to offer few features at a lower price point and hopefully attract new users. I have shot with many cameras over the years and feel entry level camera today are well equipped to take great photos:).

      First of all, thank you very much for your concern. I must say that the D3400 took some wonderful photographs, the best I have seen with any Nikon camera I have owned, and I have owned many. I feel the basic problem for me is that it does not feel comfortable when using it. I feel Nikon went overboard in practically miniaturizing the D3400. Nikon needs to know that one size does not always fit all. Thanks again and bring you up to speed on what is happening with my tribulations. :)) Tony

      Hello Tony - funny you mention the size because I thought the same. I have relatively large hands where a fully size DSLR feels very comfortable in my hands. I have used a handful of cameras over the years (including the mirrorless Sony a6000). Smaller cameras are a bit more challenging in my hands. When I first got my hands on the D3400 (after shooting with the D7000 for many years), I thought - wow, this feels a bit small/light:). I adjusted fairly quick to the smaller design but shared initial thoughts with your post:).

    Hello sir, thank you for another awesome video. I have already jumped into the Aperture & Shutter mode and have gotten to grips with it. I still need a lot of practice though in setting up the desired F number, ISO in different scenarios we face while trying to capture a picture.
    On my trip to Vegas & Grand Canyon 2 days ago, I never thought of putting the camera in Auto mode (except when i had to give the camera to my friends to capture an image of mine, a sore point of being the only person in the group interested in learning & implementing the techniques of good photography).
    Thanks to your videos, my confidence level has leveled up in using the professional modes of photography.
    Now the other thing I want to learn is shooting in RAW & post process the image, as i do not know how to essentially use either Photoshop or Lightroom, I have stayed in the JPEG FINE choice during my trip. I hope to see you make a video about post processing soon.
    As I see in the comments section, there are many people like me getting used to their new DSLR by following your wisdom on photography :)
    Kudos for all the efforts you have put forward in teaching us about photography that's done right :)

      Hello - awesome and thank you for the feedback!:) Sounds like you are on the right path!:) I am hearing from more and more people regarding post processing and feel now might be a good time to tackle it!:) I plan to cover how to get from taking a photo in raw to transferring, storing, and modifying using Lightroom. Lightroom offers many features/techniques and I could create a whole series of videos on just Lightoom:). I also recognize that people might want a free alternative so I plan to mention a couple as well. Thanks again for your feedback and I am glad to be of help!:)

      Hello and thank you for all your enthusiasm a marvelous job you do in providing us with your video tutorials - true diamonds. While on the Post Processing theme, for which I am impatiently awaiting your video as many other members of your Forum, I wanted to ask a very basic question: what is the price of the LightRoom software (I am sure it offers much more than the freeware)? Also, for some of us who still have Picasa that is no longer supported by Google, and which you mentioned you were using in the past as well, is there any downside of continuing to use it as a free alternative? Could you make some parallel evaluation of LightRoom through some basic features that exist in/overlap with Picasa so that we can better appreciate the difference. Thanks so much again!!

      Hello - thank you for the post/feedback!:) I see the need for post processing ramping up which is a good sign:). Good timing regarding Picasa ... Picasa is still available although unsupported by Google. Nonetheless, Picasa is a much more lightweight-type tool and something I used for many years while I toyed with Lightroom. I have also leveraged Photoshop over the years. I eventually made the switch to Lightroom and it was a good move. I use an older version which works great for me (check ebay, etc.). I would need to take a closer look at the newer offerings from Adobe regarding Lightroom, but I believe they went to a monthly charge. Nonetheless, I may create a separate video on a couple of free options like RawTherapee and/or Photoscape X ... RawTherapee is loaded with features to process raw images but may intimidate many beginners. If I can condense it down, I will:).

      Many thanks indeed for your prompt answer. For all of us beginners who follow your advice (because we are beginners), a lightweight software is often a sufficient way of staying at par with the hobby at the our level not only because it is free of charge, but mainly because the light editing such as light, contrast and red-eye is "good enough for accomplishing our objective", hence my pledge to incorporate a lightweight software in your future review. Thanks a million!
      On a different note, can you please advice on the ratio of aperture, shutter, ISO and white balance when taking shots of the white snow both under the sunny as well as under forecast conditions. Perhaps some hands on advice through one of your video gems may be spot on (unless you have already addressed this issue elsewhere).

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Sounds like a plan:). Regarding combination for snow - I live in a climate where it is very possible to get snow this time of year (we do not have any on the ground as of now but will at some point in the next few weeks I suspect:)). Since snow is very reflective, more light is captured. If the sun is out, expect a bunch of light and head into aperture mode (unless you are shooting action) > tune the ISO as low as it will go (i.e. 100), close the aperture down (higher number (i.e. 8+)), and let the camera control the shutter (I suspect you will have a fast shutter). Snow can also be tricky regarding white balance. I have not addressed white balance in any videos but use auto for the sake of simplicity. If you shoot in raw, you can modify the white balance in post processing. Nonetheless, auto will do a decent job.

    Thanks for that one. I have messed with this a little to learn the settings but your making a little less guilty for the money I've put into my 3400. I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before I moved up and made sure the lenses fit most of the entire line of bodies. What I have found out it seems is this is a damn good little camera and unless I hit a creativity wall, I don't really need to move up. We'll see,, with your help. It should keep me busy for quite a while mastering this guy. I have a 150-600 Tamron and a 2x teleconverter, a Rokinon 12mm. Fish eye , an Opteka 250-500mm mirror jobs with a 2x teleconverter and several screw on macro lenses and 10 screw on macro filter type lenses. Anyhow, with all that stuff I think I can take some pretty good pics if I study and learn it. What say you and why.? I think if I'm ready for another body the crossover will be relatively easy. Thanks so much.

      @RealWorld  7 років тому

      Hi Andy - wow - sounds like you have some good stuff to play with!:) If your lenses fit the D3400, they will easily switch to any Nikon body which is good. Most photographers will invest in lenses ... camera bodies will change but lenses will easily transfer. The only challenge is with crop sensors vs full sensors (i.e. Nikon D3400 vs Nikon D810 (full sensor)). You can use crop sensor lenses on a full sensor camera but will want full sensor glass on a full sensor camera (which costs more:)). One of Nikon's top crop sensor cameras is the D500 (I did a review here - ua-cam.com/video/XNZ1-l_w4fs/v-deo.html). You may or may not need/want a full sensor camera depending on your needs. The crop sensors today are much more advanced/capable compared to similar cameras many years ago. Full sensors are preferred for extremely large prints and/or the need for lower noise in low light situations. Sounds like you are on the right path ... the D3400 packs a bunch in a small package. My suggestion is to start by working in Aperture, Shutter, and Manual modes. These modes will offer the most creativity.

    can you direct me to the one if you made one that teaches me, a baby. No an infant, how to take picture of the moon. I was just going from Reno Nevada to Sacramento California and near Donner lake I pulled into a view area. The moon was full in the background was the rocky Mountains and stubby pines in the foreground it was 4-5 am in July so the moon was setting and the daylight was just beginning. It was breathtakingly beautiful. I took many shots in full auto and it didn't work. The moon looked more like a perfectly round bright white spotlight in the sky. no features at all. It was all sharp and clear trees and mountains but for the moon. Knew I should've watched the videos beforehand. Now I want to be ready for August full moon. Hope I'm in a nice place. I'm a truck driver. Thanks again. p.s. I don't have a tripod yet.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 років тому +1

      Sounds like you were in a GREAT place to shoot the moon!:) I have taken a handful of questions on the moon and feel this might make for a good video (stay tuned:)). In short and keeping in mind a budget friendly setup, I would recommend a zoom lens 200mm or greater (the more the better), a tripod or steady surface, and remote shutter release or leverage the built-in timer. Know that without a very expensive telephoto zoom lens, you will not fill the frame which is fine ... cropping will be your friend:). Set your focus to infinitely (you can do this by using auto focus and lock focus on anything in the distant landscape (I discuss this in my recent firework video)), go into Manual mode, set ISO to 100, shutter speed to 1/125, and aperture to f/11 ... you may want to play with the shutter a bit if the image is too dark or too bright. Place the camera on a tripod or steady surface and leverage the remote shutter to snap the shot. If you do not have a remote shutter, use the built-in self timer. Hope this helps to some extent!:)

      RealWorld thank you for your detailed information. I look forward to the video. yes I have the zoom lens that came in the D3400 kit and that is what I was using. the one thing I do still love after 25 years driving truck is the beautiful places I get to go and I do stop along the way to smell the roses, or to take pictures of them 😊

    WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE...
    of putting Flash Prevention Mode if there is already a flash button on the camera.
    Literally the dumbest shit ever. LMAOOOO

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 років тому

      LOL - this gives you full auto without flash. Basically, this is for someone that does not venture into one of the other modes (P, S, A, or M) and finds themselves in a situation that they do not want to use flash, etc.
