Its solid advice. Think of a histogram not as exposure, but as data. In the last example with the red clipping, its not really the red is clipping. Red simply has no data. When you look at the rubics cube, its all smooth red and evenly lit. There is no data there, besides the red itself. If the the squares were highly textured and displaying contrast, the red channel would move back, as the red channel now has some form of data contained in it. There will be instances where if there is very few hues and low contrast, such as misty grey mountain tops, the histogram will just be packed to the right. It doesn't mean over exposed, it just means there is very little colour or contrast data. Its a helpful tool for gauging exposure, but ultimately is it just a real time display of data off the jpeg.

Some of us out there remember printing in black and white on multicontrast paper, using a high contrast filter to get real black first, and then other lower contrast filters to bring out mid tones. The old rule that you always wanted pure blacks and whites somewhere in your pseudo Ansel Adams prints...of course then it was also about negative exposure and development. The William Mortensen books were all about that, but his prints were impossible mine fields to relate that too.

The Art of Photography by Ted Forbes often has some good presentations. Unfortunately, he does a lot of gear-driven shows, but one can ignore them.
Show and Tell by Stephen Leslie is very entertaining and does feature a lot of interesting photographers. AOWS is quite different, featuring b/w, grainy and high contrast photography, mostly in a square format. Adrian sees things differently.

    Hi.
I just stopped to post something to this video i watched some time ago.
I'm using an xt3 for more than 2 years now. I bought it new when the xt4 came out for a very good price in austria. Thanks to your explanations in your Fuji videos, I was able to make better photos and videos. By the way, i switched from an old canon 70D slr. So i didn't know how to use all the buttons on the camera 😂.
With your help, i mastered my xt3 very quickly and easily.
And i had some jobs because of the quality of my pictures too.
    Thank you very much.

Nice job explaining the histogram. In my opinion (along with highlights warning) it's the most important tool in photography. I shoot a lot of sports, wildlife, and concert photography and I do use it all the time. I always check my photographs in playback, I find this lets me finetune my exposure. Some people seem to get hung up with trying to get that perfect histogram when depending on the scene it can look many ways. You touched on the key, you should expose for the most important part of the photograph. For my type of shooting it's the subject, I might have some blown highlight but the person or animal is what is important. Thanks

  • @bobgriffin316
    @bobgriffin316 Рік тому +1

I find that that the histogram can help me to get the temperature colour of the photo right in post production in Lightroom. Use the histogram for all three colours of RGB. Each colour histogram has its own shape. Often the shapes of the histograms are very similar for each of the colours. I change the temperature colour of the light (e.g. 2800 K for tungsten bulbs, 5000 K for natural light) until all three colour shapes (red, green, blue) fit on top of each other as closely as possible. They will almost never be exactly the same but they are usually very similar. You have to use a little common sense to choose the right part of the shapes to merge together. Maybe choose the bumps on the left of the histogram. I usually find that I choose the ones on the left more than the ones on the right. It is usually very obvious which bumps to prioritise. It is easy. That is often the correct colour temperature of the photo (e.g. 2800 K for tungsten bulbs). Best wishes.

Also, your videos encouraged me to get my first Fuji camera (X-T2.) I know she's not the most current, but I love ergonomics, controls, and complete lack of a touch screen. I am always "butt dialing" the screen on my Canons. It is the perfect camera for shooting manual lenses.

After watching this several times, I’m a little bit confused on one point:
I understand that if I turn on ‘ natural live view’, that I will be reading (as you termed) the ‘sensor data.’
So does this mean for sure, that the histogram is now directly representing the raw image only?
In other words, can I equate your use of the ‘ sensor data’ to mean, raw image data, as a one-to-one correlation?
Thank you very much for all of your videos! ❤😊

Is Scotty Kilmer related to you in any way? Both of your voices sound so similar!

I'm thinking of creating an entire Monopoly board -- Photography Monopoly. Fujifilm GFX100S would be Boardwalk of course. Not sure what to put for Baltic Ave, LOL.

@@pal2tech Well there's a whole slew of X series cameras, red lenses, primes, etc. for the various avenues. Throw in film sims as part of community chest or in place of the utilities. I think you may have something! LOL
