    The fact that Becky struggled a bit is a "good" thing as it shows reality of thrifting. You save money (and the planet!) but you can not always find what you are looking for or not even a dupe, or you will have to go to like 15 thrift stores... So thank you for NOT editing the part Becky did not find what she was looking for as it keep things real

    • @KewBlinkla
      @KewBlinkla 4 роки тому +4

      Uhhh Becky chose the most niche and specific items, Kelsey chose pretty classic and common pieces... I don’t think it has anything to do with the city size either ^^^ most thrift stores always have different leggings, sweat shirts and white blouses. Coveralls and kimonos on the other hand? You’d be lucky.

      I think we can all find a way to agree they are both gorgeous queens with unique style. Different body types are all beautiful. One of the reasons the Sorry Girls channel is so good is that they showcase that in their style videos with flair and an appreciation for the other.

      @littlesmew I think it makes for a more interesting video when it doesn't go as planned and they have to work a little harder! Becky is gorgeous and looks amazing in literally every color and style, and I think her style is definitely more interesting and bold than Kelsey! Becky doesn't have model proportions but models aren't donating their clothes to thrift stores much so I don't really get that comment.

    Kelsey chopping off those covered buttons and bow really broke my heart, cause it all I dream of finding. I see so many of those 2010 tie up blouses, but I can never find the covered button pussy bow eighties lux blouses. I died a little, but Becky's lacy flowy duster up cycle gave me life back. The hunt and hard work to find the good stuff is part of why I enjoy second hand shopping, wether it's thrifting or curated vintage, it's so much more rewarding when you've had to put in effort to get what you want, rather than just being fed the new trends of the month through a fast fashion app. I think you could make a series out of this where you make a shopping wish list and look for stuff on it every time you are out thrifting, vintage shopping and browsing a second hand app, rather than just a one day take. It's much more realistic and will probably result in better matches to the objects you're looking for.

      Patriot Jefferson They went to college together and started the channel doing DIY Halloween costumes because they were both interested in costumes but couldn’t find any tutorials at the time. I think that was about 6-ish years ago. They’ve adapted their content as they themselves have changed. For example, they went from little DIY costumes to wedding decor to renovating a home. They’ve previously stated that because they work together most of the time, they socialise and have different groups of friends because it’s important to spend time both together and apart. They have a large TSG team behind them for their videos, such as a Content Manager and Editor and a larger team for their Upgrade My Stay series. Hope this answers some questions.

    For the tube issue. I use a metal hanger stretched out, put it through the tube and crimp a tiny hook and you can work it back out the tube. The hook will hold the fabric and you just work your way. Can be tricky till you get used to it.

    I think this video illustrated the true CHALLENGE in trying to find the items at the thrift store, especially on just one trip. You are saving money and also recycling, but it's more of an effort and takes more of your time. Both of the sewing projects looked really good! It was too bad that Kelsey's mods to the blouse made it too small for her because her sewing looked very nice. 2nd the loop turner mentioned.

    For Kelsey’s blouse: does your sewing machine have pop on-off presser feet? If so: try a rolled hem foot! They take a little bit of getting used to but are a pretty awesome sewing tool! They should make them for sewing machines without pop on/off presser feet as well, I don’t know if Toronto has Fabricland but I think so, you’d have to do some research. Good luck!

    Kelsey, they make tube turners for turning things like your ties on the blouse. My cheap method is taking a straw and a skewer (I use a chopstick) sew one end of the tube then take the skewer and put it in the end of the tube. Then push it through the straw. I also use a safety pin at one end and use that as something to act as a guide as I push it through the tube. It’s like threading elastic into a waistband.

    For Kelsey's DIY white shirt, if you attach a safety pin to the end of "tube" you are trying to turn inside out it makes it much easier. That way you have something ridged inside the tube to grasp and pull along verses just the floppy end of the fabric.

  • @sarahshemer7817
    @sarahshemer7817 4 роки тому

    Kelsey your shirt came out amazing! Even better than the one you added to cart :) The way you make a tie without a popsicle stick and a seam ripper is- you see it the same way but leave the threads uncut at the top (the threads that you have before your first stitches). Then once you sewed all the way down, take those beginning threads, put them through a hand sewing needle, and feed the needle with the threads through the tie with the needle head first (not the sharp part first). So that's how you make a diy tie/loop turner. Hope that's helpful.

    Pro tip: when sewing in general, but especially with delicate fabrics, press the seams as you go. I guarantee it will help out immensely and get you more professional outcome. One extra step, but SO worth it.

    There's a specific tool to use for turning bias binding inside out! Head to a really good fabric or commercial fabric store to get them. I use to have one for my fashion course but I forgot the official name for it!

    Such cute DIY's! You two amaze me with your thriftiness! Kelsey, as far as turning your 'tube' inside out, this might already be in the comments, but I didn't feel like reading through over 800 of them to find out ! Pin a small safety pin to one side of the end of tube, close the pin and push it back through the inside of the tube. Keep pushing the pin through the tube and push the outsides of the tube toward the insides and the tube will turn itself inside out as the pin goes through. Voila! Hope this made sense. It is actually really fun to do this and so easy!

    To turn narrow ties, sew a piece of yarn inside the tube as you sew the tube (being careful not to catch it as you sew) then anchor it at one end. Using the yarn to pull (from the non-anchored end), gently wiggle the tube from the anchored end, sort of rolling it between your fingers to encourage it to turn right side out. Once you get it started, it should be pretty easy to pull, as you continue to roll it back and forth between your fingers.

    I love thrifting so much .I still see things I want all the time at the other stores but I can't afford that anyway and it feels good to support the stores here .They use the money for scholarships for kids for college and it's fun .I always find tons of things I love and never go in and not find things I wear all the time .

    I turn skinny straps using a combo of a chop stick and a safety pin. Helps if your tie is slightly bigger than yours (as in will fit over chopstick) and one short end is sewn shut. You can also fold in a long strip like hem/bias tape (not on the bias though), use an iron on the folds, and sew down the folded edges. Use a slightly longer stitch. That slinky fabric is prone to sewing issues, like curling, and isn't very strong, so use a nice cotton or ribbon.

  • @katiesmith1272
    @katiesmith1272 4 роки тому

    Hi Kelsey,
    To make the long skinny ties way easier, head to Fabricland (Fabricland! lol I'm from the same area and we all know that commercial!) and ask for a "hooked tie turner". It won't be called that, but something similar. I got one when I was younger and learning to sew from my mom. They are a common sewing tool for those jobs. You just feed on the entire long tube and hook the ending and start pulling it through right-side out! Voila! They are like a super long rug hooker tool, like a sturdy wire with a tiny hook at one end and a loop at the other for your finger. Making ties for days... because we're all bored in isolation. XO

    For the tubes/ties, get a narrow bias tape maker. Cut your fabric strips to the necessary width and run them through the bias tape maker, ironing as you go. The raw edges end up folded under, and then you just sew up the open side. You get the same look with less sewing and you don't have to turn it right side out.
    Also, just a suggestion, if you are going to do sewing projects regularly, you may want to invest in a dress form. It can make these projects a lot easier.

  • @bluejenn30
    @bluejenn30 4 роки тому

    I solution for turning the white tie....You need thin ribbon that is slightly thinner then the tie will be. Sew the ribbon into one end of the tie and then sandwich the ribbon on the inside of the tie between the two sides of the fabric. Sew along the length of the fabric being careful not to sew over the ribbon and make sure the ribbon is longer than the tie so that it hands out of the end. When you are done sewing, pull on the end of the ribbon hanging out of the tie while letting the fabric feed through the other end, turning itself inside right. Hard to explain but works really well on satin/smooth fabric.

    Hi! Don't know if someone already told you but there is an easier way to pull the "tie" out (?)(sorry English is not my mother tongue haha). First, before you even start to sew, you pull both of the threads out from the sewing machine (the up and the low ones) longer than the piece of fabric you want to sew, then you put both threads between the fabric, where it folds, then you can start sewing the fabric together, but you have to be very careful that the threads do not end up being ed to the fabric. When you end up sewing the fabric together you just have to pull the threads, do it gentle because they may """ (? haha) so just be careful.
    That is a really easy way to pull out those kind of skinny peaces of fabric :) hope it helps.

    The denim coveralls are so cute, especially the rolled cuffs with the boots, but they need a pop of color with a fluffy scarf.
    And her black dress would look great with a 'mustard' accessory (hat, boots or purse) that would give her at least some of the color she was going for.

    To make spaghetti straps, ties or any other inverted tube, use a small safety pin instead. pin one end then slowly push it inside and through the tube. Because safety pins are flexible but larger than needles, they work very well for this.
