Really appreciate this video. I was under the impression pruning was always the right thing to do. I’ve done little pruning on my peach trees and now they are in year 4. They are producing great.

I just planted 3, 3 year old peach trees in the natural form. I wont prune my trees because I quite like the look of a fuller tree! I remember as a kid climbing our 30 foot tall fruit trees every year picking peaches and have zero interest in trying to improve on nature! Everybody is always striving for bigger or better...my thoughts are, let's just leave well enough alone! Happy gardening from Texas

Subscribed just because of this video. I have a 5 year old peach tree that I never pruned and it is gorgeous. Not much fruit and now I know why. She just hasn't gotten there yet. I have one, too. never pruned 5 years, now. I inherited it. Do you have bugs? My tree produced tons of small peaches, the bugs and the birds would not let the peach grow big enough and the leaves and branches are really crowded, I had to pick early and smaller. They w-e-r-e SWEET! Thanks for the video.

Greg Wade thanks greg, yeah it's nice to see a peach doing good just be left alone. It's so hard to find a tree though that hasn't already been pruned though. That's the trick, find a good central leader young fruit trees or good seedlings. Take care

Raw Utah I appreciate it, the boys really love running around the rows and playing. It seems more fun like a food forest maze. Lol. And the no zones are pretty thick and lush, going to have more veggies and herbs going in them this year.
One of the best tree farms up in Michigan for peaches showed that they either build like a sawhorse stand under the branches and tie to him or some post supports the branches because the branches will get so heavy with peaches they'll snap off.
I have a peach tree that has not ever been pruned for 4 years. This is the first year we have had beautiful peaches. I'm in east Tennessee. I think I need to do something. My tree is a bit bigger and bushier than the one you showed here. I'm just not sure how to prune it. I don't want to destroy it because it's a memorial tree for my granddaughter that was taken away from us. She did get to come home but it's still her tree. It's more than just a tree to me. I wish I could show you just how big this tree has grown from the time we planted it till this very day. I actually need an 8ft ladder to pick the peaches 🍑
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I always thought that pruning was risky as you make many sites to introduce disease etc. We have tall picking ladders I so am hoping we can reach most of the fruit. The look of the tree is also more appealing and the work load is greatly reduced as you are not having to heavily prune each year. I kind of think that the tree knows what it is doing and has evolved over thousands of years to be the perfect shape without pruning! Our trees are in a forest garden so we aren't too bothered if the fruit is a bit smaller and not supermarket quality. Do you get much disease as the tree can't be sprayed?
my peach tree is 4 years old and this is the first year it produced, but they're not ripening, they're staying small and green, not sure if it's weather or lack of fertilizer or something else, but i'm glad to know it's not because i messed up by not pruning it!! going to do some more research and see about giving it some good plant food and hope for an edible production next season!
Growing fruit trees individually is as much about aesthetics as it is fruit. I was already leaning toward not pruning the trees I planted last year; now I know that's the case. Good job.
I’m glad I came across this video cuz I was getting tired of seeing these videos where they cut off half the tree because they want more.sun. Since I live in Phoenix (300+ days ☀️) that’s not a problem for me and all the heat actual limits the growth of all our plants so it’s good to see an alternative. Thxs for sharing 👍
I have a peach tree for years. We never used to touch it and we just let nature do its thing. We used to get lots of peaches but as years went by, as soon as the tree started blossoming, it snowed and the tree never gave any peaches. We ended up chopping the tree but it keeps regrowing
Thanks for the information. I do think that trees and shrubs generally look better when they're growing naturally. Over-pruning peach trees can often result in dead branches. I think that I will keep the pruning to a minimum so that the tree is healthier and lives longer. I'll generally only prune to keep the tree from becoming too tall. I wish that I had acres and acres so that my trees can just grow as large as possible and produce more fruit.
Thanks for speaking out. People need something to do so they cut on their trees for past time. You are correct about the tres with central leader cut off. However I think topping off a tree may be a good thing for different reasons. Some pear trees grow upright with little to no latteral branches which you need to bear fruit. I have three young peach trees that are growing nice and don't seem to need prunning.

It’s growing quite tall and much sturdy. I was wondering about pruning it and opening the center. After your vid, I’m going to leave it alone and let nature takes its course. Thanks for this! I’m going to let mine take its natural course. I planted mine last spring it’s still only about 4ft tall, but I just had to pick at least 30+ peaches from it since it’s not strong enough. I honestly didn’t think it would try to produce this early in its life. It’s a Belle of Georgia, and I’m in southeast Alabama.
I have a large peach tree. It’s been slightly pruned, but about the same height!!! And mine does produce many peaches! I like letting a tree grow to its full capacity. I only prune open center or sever the tree like recommended when I have no other option. I am an advocate to let the tree grow like yours. I have a persimmon fuyu. Never pruned giant. Way above average height. My dad wants to prune and typically I would, but I like the aesthetics and the style of a wild fruit tree. It’s just beautiful

great video from my experience we prune them down to make faster safer picking if we don't need a ladder to get to the fruit then we can pick the fruit faster and more efficient. (fruit farming) open center also helps get the sun to all branches like you said pro and cons. for a backyard "orchard" I think you are doing great plus the kids can enjoy climbing for the fruit. Hey big joe, can I top an older(7-10yrs), formerly in a wine barrel, wrongly-pruned peach tree? The graft is low like just above ground level, there’s only 2 scaffold branches at about 6 ft, and it’s a mess from there up... I got it, took it out of the barrel, this will be it’s 3 rd year in the ground, was told it had been in the barrel for 5-7 years and was a Home Depot clearance item before that... Can I just cut it about 3 or 4 ft above the graft and regrow branches? There’s just a bare trunk now. It’s a semi dwarf and I’m just starting to see the first bit of bud swell in the last few days. I don’t want to lose the tree it produces lots of great fruit, just want it to be more user friendly, I understand I would lose a few seasons of fruit...
Nature knows. Good post. I'll baby a new planting the 1st year but I don't want to plant more & more work for myself. I hate to loose a tree but I'll have a better food forest by letting the strongest survive. I'd rather have a real tree than a tree that fruits early.
We got a peach tree. It is in such an upright form, I was dreading pruning it into the vase shape, especially in that it doesn't have much for side branches. Although I would try to limit the height, I feel inspired to just let it grow straight. Maybe less peaches, but also less work, and we don't need that many peaches.

Yea. Love that nature. Unfortunately ours looked like telephone poles (two). I knew there'd be trouble if I took the shears to it, but it had to be done. It came with set fruit. I had to prop it up with 1 x 2's. It looked hilarious. But it didn't bust. So later I lopped the center branch. It really was the only branch. Or should I say telephone pole. Anyway it did get nasty. On both of them. The trunks split open.The sap is like sweet sweet peach pancake syrup. If you cut branches larger than one inch on the peach you will get this reaction. That is what I'd found out. They were about 1" around, even larger. It resulted in some die back. I know what you mean about bonsai. With careful pruning it should recover some shape, maybe very nicely, but the healing wounds that opened up on the trunk are still recovering. It would have been helpful to know that they have a shallow root system. Also that they have a relatively short life cycle. The die back and split oozing trunk reaction is particular to the peach. It reminds me of sumac, they have split bark issues. I harbor a suspicion that they are actually hybrids of sumac and some other fruit. Seriously. The sumac has a similar bark reaction and if you know about their fruit, the tiny FUZZY red berries that make a lemon strawberry like flavored tea are reminiscent of microscopic peaches. Or, it's just all a series of coincidences.
Good video man, I am in East Tennessee and mine are growing crazy to the sides and not as much tall and that’s why I am king of worried but so far couple fruits on the second year!
And yet another FINE example of the benefits of Permaculture, better to let the plants go free and grow as they may then to open prune, in this case, the PeachTree, as for the late frost what a bummer, well looking on the bright side, the Tree will concentrate its energies on leaf growth and getting bigger, and maybe for next season, considering no late frosts happen, that tree will be FULL with fruit! :)

If you look at the wild trees like like the red oak.. it is never pruned and it gives loads of acorns to wildlife.. no need to prune I have two peach trees they are about 7 years old and they are huge.. gives me peaches when the weather is good... sometimes we get to much rain and they rott from fungus..

Very instructive and usefull. It looks similar as my young peach tree: open center plus modified leader above. Or maybe two open centers, one above the other. Several things may be corrected with such arangement: 1) *prune at bare minimum.* That is for respecting natural long life of tree. That stays for all trees. 2) Prune with anticipation of future crowd. *That is for prevention of dark places where most fruits will rot.* 3) Limit the hight to say 5m. That is for picking fruit with my telescopic picker. That is my current approach. Interestingly, just one digression: Fukuoka thought that all trees produced from seed naturally goes for central leader, and if not he thought they have been influenced by human pruning or interfering with it's ancestors. Basically mankind have been sabotaging nature, pretending to be smarter than God, with devastating consequences.
My peach tree is huge. I’ve been thinking I need to prune it but maybe I’ll just leave it alone . One con to such a tall tree is you can’t reach the peaches! Lol

If you take the time to learn the art of pruning it’s worthwhile endeavor, if you don’t have the time for it and are fit enough to climb ladders or just don’t care about fruit yield then let it be.

I tried a central leader tree with 2 vases, but it was too tall to pick, so now it's open center for me, was too late to cut central leader out, they wouldn't heal properly with a big trunk.
I'm curious how long this peach tree will live and produce compared to a pruned peach tree. From what I have heard all that pruning opens it up to diseases they would otherwise not get hence the 12 year mark for commercial orchards.

I have a garden full of mature unpruned peach trees but they hardly produce any fruit (and the few fruits they give are tiny in size) - I wonder what the difference is between your tree and mine?
Don't see how you can protect this tree from frosts. Here in OK we get diabolical late March frosts, so we keep peach trees small and spray or cover them. As a senior citizen I don't like missing a year's production. Birds and squirrels would also feast on this size tree, not to mention wind storms. A small tree can hold on to its fruit better in 60 mph gusts. Maybe its a generational thing. My dad grew great peaches and never pruned.
We have an unpruned Peachtree that my grandfather planted on his property in 1987 it has finally reached the end of It life sadly. The base is losing its bark. I wish I could save it but I have no clue on how to do it. This will be our last year of eating peaches from it. I am trying to figure out how to grow a new tree from its seeds or from one of its branches.
Just throw the pits into a plastic bag and put it im the fridge for a few months. Then plant them altogether in a big pot and wait from them to sprout. Separate once they are 6 inch tall 🍑🍑
I need to prune a 3 year old peach that i never pruned so its main trunk is 3 in diameter and about 20 feet tall. I would like to bring the main trunk as far down as i can. Any suggestions? When is best time to prune my preach trees also…. Thank you!
Not sure where you get the idea that pruned fruit trees don't live as long. For home owners, definitely should prune all trees, more fruits to your reach and easier to control diseases. You don't want to get a big tall tree but most of the tree and its fruits are out of your reach/control, a disaster to deal with regarding pests, fungus, diseases and havest.
Was this planted from seed, bare root or from a pot? If youre keeping the above ground part natural i imagine you need to keep below ground natural as well.
i got a few that wants to make a bush rather than a tree They keep grow new plants from the bottom. The more i cut em off the more they put out from the bottom IDK WHY
I like to prune my trees if you want a fruit tree full of fruit and easy to pick..your tree is to tall just growing to the sky look how the branches they are just competing and not making fruit..and i cut my roses almost to the ground now i have a full bush of roses
Can you come and prune and plant my 4 year old peach tree in the ground for me? oh and my dwarf plum!!! :-P Plus mine are way smaller. Probably because I have no idea what Im doing, and they have been in containers almost since I bought them.

My grandpa used to put 2x4s with a v cut in the end under his branches for support. He always had tons of peaches!

Do you just have the one peach tree? Might be it needs another for pollination.

I agree to an extent. Some pruning for size control would still be good for the backyard grower.

I only prune open center or sever the tree like recommended when I have no other option. I am an advocate to let the tree grow like yours. I have a persimmon fuyu. Never pruned giant. Way above average height. My dad wants to prune and typically I would, but I like the aesthetics and the style of a wild fruit tree. It’s just beautiful

great video from my experience we prune them down to make faster safer picking if we don't need a ladder to get to the fruit then we can pick the fruit faster and more efficient. (fruit farming) open center also helps get the sun to all branches like you said pro and cons. for a backyard "orchard" I think you are doing great plus the kids can enjoy climbing for the fruit. Hey big joe, can I top an older(7-10yrs), formerly in a wine barrel, wrongly-pruned peach tree? The graft is low like just above ground level, there’s only 2 scaffold branches at about 6 ft, and it’s a mess from there up...
I got it, took it out of the barrel, this will be it’s 3 rd year in the ground, was told it had been in the barrel for 5-7 years and was a Home Depot clearance item before that...
Can I just cut it about 3 or 4 ft above the graft and regrow branches? There’s just a bare trunk now.
It’s a semi dwarf and I’m just starting to see the first bit of bud swell in the last few days.
I don’t want to lose the tree it produces lots of great fruit, just want it to be more user friendly, I understand I would lose a few seasons of fruit...

Nature knows. Good post. I'll baby a new planting the 1st year but I don't want to plant more & more work for myself. I hate to loose a tree but I'll have a better food forest by letting the strongest survive. I'd rather have a real tree than a tree that fruits early.
We got a peach tree. It is in such an upright form, I was dreading pruning it into the vase shape, especially in that it doesn't have much for side branches. Although I would try to limit the height, I feel inspired to just let it grow straight. Maybe less peaches, but also less work, and we don't need that many peaches.
That's excellent, yeah pruning makes it bush out and grow more branches but pruned peaches don't live as long as natural unpruned peach trees
The tags on the trees always say they can get that big, bit never actually seen one.

Yea. Love that nature. Unfortunately ours looked like telephone poles (two). I knew there'd be trouble if I took the shears to it, but it had to be done. It came with set fruit. I had to prop it up with 1 x 2's. It looked hilarious. But it didn't bust. So later I lopped the center branch. It really was the only branch. Or should I say telephone pole. Anyway it did get nasty. On both of them. The trunks split open.The sap is like sweet sweet peach pancake syrup. If you cut branches larger than one inch on the peach you will get this reaction. That is what I'd found out. They were about 1" around, even larger. It resulted in some die back. I know what you mean about bonsai. With careful pruning it should recover some shape, maybe very nicely, but the healing wounds that opened up on the trunk are still recovering. It would have been helpful to know that they have a shallow root system. Also that they have a relatively short life cycle.
The die back and split oozing trunk reaction is particular to the peach. It reminds me of sumac, they have split bark issues. I harbor a suspicion that they are actually hybrids of sumac and some other fruit. Seriously. The sumac has a similar bark reaction and if you know about their fruit, the tiny FUZZY red berries that make a lemon strawberry like flavored tea are reminiscent of microscopic peaches. Or, it's just all a series of coincidences.

Pruning ensures new growth and removal of dead and diseased branches. Trim or thin back don't cut crazy back .

And yet another FINE example of the benefits of Permaculture, better to let the plants go free and grow as they may then to open prune, in this case, the PeachTree, as for the late frost what a bummer, well looking on the bright side, the Tree will concentrate its energies on leaf growth and getting bigger, and maybe for next season, considering no late frosts happen, that tree will be FULL with fruit! :)

If you look at the wild trees like like the red oak.. it is never pruned and it gives loads of acorns to wildlife.. no need to prune I have two peach trees they are about 7 years old and they are huge.. gives me peaches when the weather is good... sometimes we get to much rain and they rott from fungus..
thats because your not opening up the tree to breath properly which allows the tree to dry and prevent rot and fungus

When a branch goes sideways, like people like, it's much weaker and tends to crack on the main trunk, causing disease and rot.

Very instructive and usefull.
It looks similar as my young peach tree: open center plus modified leader above. Or maybe two open centers, one above the other.
Several things may be corrected with such arangement:
1) *prune at bare minimum.* That is for respecting natural long life of tree. That stays for all trees.
2) Prune with anticipation of future crowd. *That is for prevention of dark places where most fruits will rot.*
3) Limit the hight to say 5m. That is for picking fruit with my telescopic picker.
That is my current approach.
Interestingly, just one digression: Fukuoka thought that all trees produced from seed naturally goes for central leader, and if not he thought they have been influenced by human pruning or interfering with it's ancestors.
Basically mankind have been sabotaging nature, pretending to be smarter than God, with devastating consequences.

If you take the time to learn the art of pruning it’s worthwhile endeavor, if you don’t have the time for it and are fit enough to climb ladders or just don’t care about fruit yield then let it be.

Not always the case, we have a neglected peach tree. We moved in 6 months ago. Producing very little.
I tried a central leader tree with 2 vases, but it was too tall to pick, so now it's open center for me, was too late to cut central leader out, they wouldn't heal properly with a big trunk.

I'm curious how long this peach tree will live and produce compared to a pruned peach tree. From what I have heard all that pruning opens it up to diseases they would otherwise not get hence the 12 year mark for commercial orchards.
I like your idea, in India we never prun trees. Fruit tree or otherwise.
If you cut off across the top of the tree it will grow more out instead of up so it will not get so tall. I do that every three yrs.
We have a tree like this and I just want to let it live it’s best life! 😂 ours is headed into year five and it’s probably 15 feet tall. I need to buy a ladder!

Storms gets them prune.
Don't see how you can protect this tree from frosts. Here in OK we get diabolical late March frosts, so we keep peach trees small and spray or cover them. As a senior citizen I don't like missing a year's production. Birds and squirrels would also feast on this size tree, not to mention wind storms. A small tree can hold on to its fruit better in 60 mph gusts.
Maybe its a generational thing. My dad grew great peaches and never pruned.
We have an unpruned Peachtree that my grandfather planted on his property in 1987 it has finally reached the end of It life sadly. The base is losing its bark. I wish I could save it but I have no clue on how to do it. This will be our last year of eating peaches from it. I am trying to figure out how to grow a new tree from its seeds or from one of its branches.
Just throw the pits into a plastic bag and put it im the fridge for a few months. Then plant them altogether in a big pot and wait from them to sprout. Separate once they are 6 inch tall 🍑🍑

I need to prune a 3 year old peach that i never pruned so its main trunk is 3 in diameter and about 20 feet tall. I would like to bring the main trunk as far down as i can. Any suggestions? When is best time to prune my preach trees also…. Thank you!
Not sure where you get the idea that pruned fruit trees don't live as long. For home owners, definitely should prune all trees, more fruits to your reach and easier to control diseases. You don't want to get a big tall tree but most of the tree and its fruits are out of your reach/control, a disaster to deal with regarding pests, fungus, diseases and havest.
Was this planted from seed, bare root or from a pot? If youre keeping the above ground part natural i imagine you need to keep below ground natural as well.
i got a few that wants to make a bush rather than a tree They keep grow new plants from the bottom. The more i cut em off the more they put out from the bottom IDK WHY

I like to prune my trees if you want a fruit tree full of fruit and easy to pick..your tree is to tall just growing to the sky look how the branches they are just competing and not making fruit..and i cut my roses almost to the ground now i have a full bush of roses
