    Maybe an unpopular opinion but I really appreciate Michael Gambon for the energy he brings to the character of Dumbledore. Richard Harris was already very ill and it became obvious in the second movie. It is hard to imagine him in scenes like the Ministry showdown in the fifth movie now that we have seen Mr. Gambon's performance. If there was any doubt before I think that was the moment when everyone could say "Yes, that is indeed Albus Dumbledore."

    • @AverageAwesomeDude
      @AverageAwesomeDude Рік тому +9

      I always felt like they both embodied two parts of dumbledores character, Harris was the wise and gentle, the one with all the comforting words and kindness, while Gambon on the other hand IMO perfectly captures the energetic and almost mischievous old man vibes Dumbledore had. Some people don’t like how Gambon had moments closer to anger than the serenity Dumbledore has in the books but I always felt like it gave him a little more depth, there are things that can shake him out of his cool, he feels more real

    • @PrimeCircuit
      @PrimeCircuit Рік тому +4

      @@AverageAwesomeDude Yeah, there were moments like that in the 4th but this wasn't really Gambon's fault. All characters were off because of the aggressive directing.

    • @BeatGoat
      @BeatGoat Рік тому +3

      I have to disagree. Harris could really turn it up when necessary (compare him shouting "Silence" at the students in the Great Hall to Gambon doing the same thing). It's sad we'll never see Harris' take on the more dynamic scenes of the later installments. Gambon was fine, but I always felt he lacked the very collected yet powerful aura Harris exuded.

    A lot of things were different from the movie and book. For example: In the books, the Firebolt was given to Harry in the middle of the story, and was the cause of a major fallout between Harry and Ron against Hermione. As everyone thought that Sirius was still a bad guy, Hermione feared that the broom was jinxed by Black, and told Minerva about it, and she confiscated the broom, which Harry was mad at since he needed/wanted to use the broom for Quidditch. They remained cold to Hermione until Hagrid knocked some sense into them as Hermione was only concerned for Harry.

    This movie really did Ron dirty. The movie crew gave most of Ron's lines and moments to Hermione. When Snape insulted Hermione, instead of agreeing with Snape, Ron lashed out at him, sarcastically asking him why ask a question if he didn't Hermione to answer, which gave him detention. Also, the "if you wanna kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too" line was from Ron in the books. The books show that Hermione isn't perfect, while the movies make us think she is.

    Richard Harris and Michael Gambon both did great jobs at playing Dumbledore, but in totally different ways. Harris had that good-natured, calm and comforting air about him, but in the books Dumbledore was always shown in a way that made it clear that as nice and polite as he was, at any given moment, he was the most powerful man in the room, and I think Michael Gambon does that element better. The potion they are talking about in the end is the so-called "Wolfsbane Potion". It eases lycanthropy. The potion can not prevent you from turning into a wolf but it makes you keep your senses, meaning you still know who you are and are in control of your actions. During his year as a teacher at Hogwarts Snape brewed the potion for Lupin and he drank it each month before fullmoon. 33:18 - I'm pretty sure the movie ends with this weird motion-blur shot of Harry on his broom as a double reference to earlier moments in the film: first, when Harry tells Lupin that the happy memory (that was ultimately inadequate) he was thinking of to produce his patronus charm was the first time he rode a broom (he's certainly happier this time, all things considered); and second, because it is visually similar to the effect of the Dementors sucking at the soul of a person.

And in the books, when he was in Azkaban, Fudge who was on a visit of him lend him the newspapers where an article about the Weasleys going to Egypt showed a picture of the family, with "Scabbers" on Ron's shoulder. That's when Sirius understood that Peter was in Hogwarts.

    Haha loved seeing your reaction! I personally love the general aesthetic feel of this film compared to the others.
    I noticed that the knight in the portraits made you laugh quite a lot-- he's called Sir Cadogan and he's actually quite hilarious in the books as well! 😁 One of the things that didn't make it into the movies was that Sirius actually got into Gryffindor Tower one night and tried to attack Scabbers-- who he knew was Ron's rat-- though he was unsuccessful and had to flee the scene when Ron woke up. In the book it builds up the tension between Harry and Sirius because it's meant to look like Sirius was after Harry when really he was after Scabbers/Pettigrew all along (basically Pettigrew framed him for the Potters' murder and Sirius obviously knew this, making it his main mission to get out of Azkaban and find/kill him).
    Anyway the reason Sirius was able to get inside the tower was because after the Fat Lady refused to resume her position as the tower portrait, the job was given to Sir Cadogan, who kept confusing the students by changing the password like multiple times a day. So Neville started keeping a list of these passwords but then lost them, and Sirius found them (from what I remember).
    Here's a funny scene with Sir Cadogan that sadly didn't make it into the film! ua-cam.com/video/guZlFy7_o9A/v-deo.html

    Love your reactions! Looking forward to the next one :) This is my favourite film along with the final film, but they do still leave out some relatively important information from the books. Just to answer one of your questions (without any spoilers)..... Sirius knew to break free and come after Peter Pettigrew because he would read the Daily Prophet in Azkaban and he saw the photograph of Rons family in Egypt in the paper (the one Ron was flashing about at the start of the film) and he saw Scabbers who had a toe missing. He knew that Peter Pettigrew was a rat animagus from their school days, and obviously knew that he had cut off one of his fingers when he faked his death so therefore put two and two together and came to find him at Hogwarts. He managed to escape from Azkaban by turning into his dog animagus and squeezing through the bars and going unnnoticed by the dementors because they only really sense human souls. Hope this makes sense!

    Just a bit of info for why the nightbus came, can be explained with this paragraph:
    For witches and wizards who are Floo-sick, whose Apparition is unreliable, who hate heights or who feel frightened or queasy taking Portkeys, there is always the Knight Bus, which appears whenever a witch or wizard in urgent need of transportation sticks out their wand arm at the kerb.

    Super reaction!
    This film has a really different style - not surprising really - it is directed by multi-Oscar Winning director Alfonso Cuarón!
    It does a great job of pulling all the pieces together and weaving a story. Obviously some things are kind of missed out or re-arranged from the novel - which is an excellent read. For example Harry actually receives the Firebolt as an anonymous Christmas present after the match when the Dementors attack but before any of the events at the Whomping Willow or Shrieking Shack. Hermione gets it confiscated (by telling Professor MacGonagall), fearing it might be jinxed by Sirius Black. It's only after all the events when Harry returns to Kings Cross with his friends that he receives a letter from Sirius, informing him that he sent the Firebolt and giving him permission (as technically one of Harry's guardians) to visit Hogsmeade the following year.

And the Scene in the Great Hall where they are sleeping on the floor, there is a blooper where Michael Gambon (New Dumbledore) and Alan Rickman play a Prank on Daniel Radcliffe, they put a Fart Machine in his Sleeping Bag and Michael Gambon kept pressing the button to make it fart as Daniel wanted to have his sleeping bag put near a girl he took a liking to, so they wanted to Embarrass him, The hall echoed with it, and Alan Rickman started laughing while Michael kept trying to say the line before everyone started laughing which he then started laughing himself. Portraits are paintings which are sentient due to enchantments placed on the portrait by the painter. The portrait will be able to use some of the subject's favourite phrases and imitate their general demeanour based on how the subject appears to the painter; however, they are limited in what they can say or do.
    A portrait knows little if anything of its subject's life, and therefore could not hold a very interesting conversation about its subject, as they are only representations of the living subjects as seen by the artist. The exception to this is of the portraits of Hogwarts headmasters, which are kept in a cupboard from the time of their painting, which is usually very old, until the subject dies. The headmaster can therefore teach their portrait to act and speak like them so that they can teach their successors.
    In a way, the Headmasters Portraits are "clones" of the subject, which they can either give advice to future Headmasters or help them whenever they should require with their ability to go from portrait to portrait. Per say, if a Headmaster needed information from far away on a specific location, if there's a portrait in said location, the portraits can travel to that portrait quickly and return with information.

    I love this movie and it's definitely one of my favourite, maybe even my favourite (can't decide) HP movie!
    The book is even better xd
    Clearing some stuff up:
    -James, Sirius, Remus, Peter, Lily and Snape were all in the same year back at Hogwarts --> how Snape knows Sirius and Remus etc.
    -James, Sirius, Remus and Peter ARE the Marauders and made the map.
    Remus = Moony (bc moon -> werewolf, yeah you get it)
    James = Prongs (his patronus is a stag (like Harrys), his Animagus form is a stag, you get it)
    Sirius = Padfoot (bc dog)
    Peter =Wormtail (he turns into a rat, self-explanatory)
    Those 4 were best friends throughout their whole time at Hogwarts and basically brothers
    -James, Sirius and Peter found out about Remus being a werewolf and managed to become Animagi so they could accompany him to his transformations.
    Sirius = Dog
    James = Stag
    Peter = Rat
    Also about the whole "They want to kill Peter"-thing:
    Lily and James had to go into hiding during the war and that was also the time when Lily got pregnant and they had Harry.
    With the help of a certain charm/enchantment, the Fidelius, they were able to basically conceal their home and keep the location a secret, so that no one who doesn't know about the secret can find the place.
    When using that, you have to name a Secretkeeper, which is the only person that can reveal the secret to others. Lily and James were set on making Sirius their secretkeeper and everybody was sure that it indeed was Sirius.
    He however, thought it would be obvious for anyone that the Potters would name him their secretkeeper, James and Sirius were basically brothers at that point. So, it would be obvious to Voldemort aswell.
    Sirius proposed that they name Peter Pettigrew, who was a very close friend of them since their childhood (Peter = Wormtail), the secretkeeper. Everyone would think it was Sirius and go after him, but even under any torture or veritaserum, he wouldn't be able to give the secret up. This change in secretkeepers was as secret as possible, and basically no one, except those involved, knew about it. (I think even Remus wasn't told and had to live with the thought that Sirius betrayed them until Pettigrew was seen on the map in PoA- don't take my word on it tho, not 100% sure)
    That plan backfired when Peter ended up being a double-agent/spy for Voldemort/changed sides and when given the choice between dying or revealing the location of the Potters home, he choose the latter.
    When he heard about the death of Lily and James, Sirius knew that Pettigrew must've told Voldy (bc there was no other way for him to know) and was furious at Peter, understandably so.
    He sought him out and confronted Peter about it. Pettigrew however, fled, but not before killing 11 Muggles in an explosion and cutting his finger off. That way he faked his death and effectively framed Sirius for blowing Peter up, along with 11 Muggles.
