Akane, by far, is my absolute favorite drummer in the world. She is amazingly talented, always keeps the beat, and is ALWAYS SMILING. You can't help be drawn to someone like that. She is also so kind, friendly, supportive, that she has many, many, many friends in and out of the business.
Kanami is justifiably proud of Miku's progress, but in this case, she's teasing her because Miku messed up the lyrics (which she wrote) at a previous gig. It's always fun to watch your reactions!
Interestingly, the band as a whole rarely makes mistakes, but when asked who is most likely to make one, they said Saiki or Kanami. Which makes sense, being the lead vocalist and lead guitarist. Akane and Miku rarely make mistakes, but everyone will mess up at some point. Except MISA. MISA does not make mistakes. (According to Miku)
@@KarstenThorsen I remember at one of the lives I went to back in 2022, Ace of Spades Sacramento I believe, after one of the MCs the band started up and suddenly stopped. Akane forgot to put her IEM back on. She got up ran to the front of the stage and showed everyone, bowed 45 degrees, then ran back to her rig and started back up again. So funny, Po! The reason KanamI was keeping watch on Miku, because the last time they performed "Freedom" was Miku forgot the lyrics!!! Miku and Saiki spend significant time arranging the vocals. Akane also plays the trombone and piano. We get to enjoy these wonderful Female drummers due to Nao, drummer for the band Maximum the Hormone.
Actually, I did a deep dive on this story. What I found out was.... This MV was shot on the second night of back-to-back shows, 13th and 14th February 2020. On night 1 they didn't play "Freedom" which I thought was a big surprise since it's their most played song live. So, I think the reason Kanami was watching Miku was that this part of "Freedom" was the 1st time Miku had a vocal solo part on night 2, as the first 5 songs of the night were all Saiki. I wasn't there, but from what I found Miku flubbed some lyrics for "Choose Me". When I posted these findings November 3rd, 2024 in the FB group, Band Maid Fan's Cafe, one person said that they heard that the flub happened in practice before the show. As I looked at the set list for the 1st night, I found that they played the entire "Conqueror" album in order. There were a few breaks where other songs were stuck in, like "Don't Be Long" and "Onset" back-to-back. A few live song debuts with Miku on acoustic and the show closing with "Blooming" and "Rinne". I said that I wished they would have done like Babymetal does by recording and packaging both nights together, both nights had superb set-lists. Hey Guys....I just woke up...grabbed my espresso ..turned on YTube and pulled up your video....and Freedom came on...what a GREAT way to wake up !!!!! I heard it a 1000 times but it fires me up every time and it looks like they had so much fun at this performance.
Freedom is one of those songs where the guitarists aren't stuck next to their pedal boards. When this got played in the okyu-jis I attended I knew that Kanami-san and MISA-san will switch places. :D
The Maids generally like to troll each other on stage. Anytime you see Maids moving near each other that is what is happening. I believe they call it pulling faces as they try to get each other to break. Akane is usually a top target because she can't go anywhere, and she is an instigator in other settings. I can say this is my favorite band, and an addiction I have no plans on quitting. Over 100 songs and none disappoint.
I was already a fan of Band-Maid when i watched this live perfomance of FREEDOM, but after this... damn!, i'd became the biggest fan of Akane, she's so fuckin good!, i don't think i've ever enjoyed watching a drummer playing so much in my life Thanks for this reaction!, it's a ton of fun when you already know the song and click on the video thinking: "yeah this gonna be a fun one" lol

The two most fun concerts I’ve ever been to have been the two times I’ve seen band maid. 30 years of concerts and if I could see anyone again it’d be them hands down. Kanami is a gift for the god of music 🤘🏻🤘🏻
GR8 reaction guys!!!! Jimmy Page was in the audience (not sure if this particular show) but he was so impressed with Akane's drumming that he wanted to meet her! Akane thought she was being punked! But it was real! He said of Akane that she was the BEST drummer he had heard since John Bonham died!!!! There are pictures of Jimmy with Akane floating around out there.
There's definitely a picture out there and you can find it easily by searching on Akane and Jimmy Page photo. That said I don't believe there's any evidence that he said that about her. Which makes no difference to me whatsoever because it's a great story even if all he said was boy you're a great drummer!
So, this was with a click track. That's incredible, Po! For the Yokohama show, Akane did a freestyle solo (no click) into "Blackhole." And if you can find the 2020 Line Cube Shibuya show, Akane opens the show with a solo into "Rinne." By far, the best show opener of them all. These are the top 3 Gorilla moves, Po! 🦍🍌
Agree totally with Kanami’s reaction to Miku. Note how she, as is done in Japanese culture, also lowers herself when observing with that big proud smile. The back stories together and separately are half of this band’s allure.

For me, after first seeing the "Thrill" video(a few years ago) I had to find more of Band-Maid. It was then I found "Freedom"(live), Domination"(live), "Play"(live) & "Onset"(live). I was now hooked on Band-Maid(for life) & proceeded to buy almost all of their CD's, DVD's & Blu-ray's. Now if I can just get to see them live in concert, it would make my dream come true.
Basically the same order of songs for me. Also purchased the cd's & blu-rays. I did get to see them in concert and at 61 I can say it's the best concert I have ever seen. Hoping to see them again in 2025. Fingers crossed. Hopefully they come somewhat near you so you can see them too. Make it a bucket list item. Peace!
Thank you for your wonderful comment. Band Made has over 130 original songs, and there are no duds. I like all of their songs, but I love this video. The drummer is relatively inconspicuous, but I think the technique and sense of this group's drummer are the best. I also love the look on her face when she is enjoying the performance.
When the maids sit down (they do it a lot), it is to step out of the spotlight and give all the light and attention to the maid who have a "their moment", like a solo or do something special.
This is probably the first Band Maid video I saw and it's still one of my favorites. When I was a kid, you kind of expected to see a drum solo at a concert. Sadly, it is so rare these days. Hail Akane!
Kaname is Miku's guitar teacher, so she takes a personal interest in he development as a guitarist. note that Kaname parked her self in front of the teleprompter, just to keep Miku honest. And Akane has to be the the happiest drummer ever! To have Kaname as a guitar teach is just awesome.
Teleprompter? I’ve seen them several times and no teleprompter was anywhere in sight. The closest thing was the IPad Miku used on the latest US tours but that was used to help her with English for MC’s.
Very possibly the happiest song ever written. Love the transition from drum solo to guitar solo and then the stripped down instrumental for Saiki's last bit there.

I love your love for this band. This performance was way, way beyond good. It will be remembered for Akane’s joyous drum solo. She’s a star. This is from someone who has been a huge fan of the one and only Neil Peart.
I think this was the time where Saiki's voice was really starting to improve to what it is now after the surgery a few years before. Now she sounds peak form or at least thats what i think till they prove me wrong and up the ante.

And then there’s the joy Akane brings in her solo. I love how she’s got the toms tuned and how they’ve mic’d her kit. I love the spirit and energy you both bring to your videos.

@@Greish-esquire Yes, there is! But not putting pressure on one and other or, as it is also part of this myth, that Minco is sabotaging for Miku by sitting in front of a screen with the lyrics. Sitting down is a way of getting out of the way, so all the attention is directed to the Maid in focus. You can see it in many performances by them. This is shown best during the bass/guitar duel in Hate!.
I have asked in the past which Maid they would like to hang out with for a day. Everyone had their favorite Maid and then explained why. I stated I would like hang out with Akane because you would probably meet some of her friends, her goofy sense of humor and take on life matches mine. Yes, it would cost me a fortune on the food tab, but it would be worth it and I probably look back an consider the best day of my life.

Do you really think Kobato Miku needs a teleprompter, and then somewhere on the bottom right of the floor where she has to twist her head to read it? I've been to five concerts and apart from her laptop, which she has on the microphone stand to interact with the audience, she doesn't need any tools.

Jimmy is right, this is rock'n'roll at its finest. And seeing the Maids for a few minutes without their stage personas alone makes this performance special. I mean, we see everyone without exception - including Misa! - with a big smile, a great drum solo by Akane, plus a solo from Kanami in which she shows off a little for a change (quite rightly so!).... Notice that whenever MINCHO is playing next to someone else-KOBATO, MISA, or Danni of The Warning-she always physically lowers herself into a crouch beneath her counterpart in a literal expression of humility. This is also the first BM song I heard and was instantly a big fan. Fell in love with Miku instantly po. I loved the vibe and the interaction. They were having such a ( Joll) South African for a blast. Trying to make each other laugh. Love these girls. I'm surprised that Big Pharma haven't tried to suppress this performance, it's what I use as an anti-depressant every morning. 'Proud' Kanami is actually trolling Miku, who had messed up the lyrics in a previous okyuji so Kanami is supervising her. We also get to see Misa and Saiki playing Hengao with Akane and totally failing to put her off, as usual. I suspect Akane's click-track actually listens to her.
As I might have mentioned before, I spent some of lockdown adding English subtitles to some of Band-Maid's mv's. For my translation of Miku's part (and it may well be only about 75% correct coz I'm not a native speaker) I have it as "Jealousy and Prejudice, distorted emotions...No choice but to lie. 1,2,3,4...It's all oblivious, laugh and being laughed at...Lie, lie, lie". There's probably a silent 'po' in there somewhere too!
Lots of happy drummers in Japan. Murata Tamu's nickname is smiling thunder. Kawaguchi Senri is always smiling. As is Akane's good friend Haruna. Even, and perhaps because of, Nao of Maximum the Hormone, the inspiration.
When Kanami knelt during Miku's phrase she was trolling her. By kneeling she blocked Miku's stage monitor because Miku had messed the lyrics (in itself funny, since Miku is the main lyricist) a show or two prior. And Akane murdering her kit while smiling from ear to ear is just awesome.

I've been following rock since the late 1950's and have seen a LOT of drummers come and go, but Akane Hirose is something special, even in Japan where you so many excellent drummers like Kanade Sato(KOIAI), Senri Kawaguchi(The Jazz Avengers), Mi Mi (Tokyo Groove Jyoshi), Rina(SCANDAL), Haruna(Lovebites), Junna(One OK Rock) and a host of others. But Akane is a cut above in my opinion, especially with her creativity. And this drum solo is the best I've heard in 40+ years. The way she weaved the drum patterns into the composition was magical, and her fills on a regular basis are works of art. I've gone back and watched videos of legends like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, and Akane ranks very close to them in creativity. And this is not to knock any of the other drummers playing today. And there's another young drummer who looks like she heading on the same trajectory. Her name is Yoyoka Samo, just turned 15 this past October, and is just amazing. She's from Japan but lives in the US now to go to school. The earliest video of her drumming is at age 3 and being able to keep a beat. She had her own UA-cam channel at 5 and has done some amazing drum covers over the years and has gained the praise of Ian Paice, Dave Grohl, Chad Smith and Jimmy Page, among others. If you want to see something cool, check out "Yoyoka's 12th Birthday Sessions" on YT, where she plays with some the best session musicians and singers from Japan. One of the songs that they kill is Joe Satriani's "Satch Boogie", with Yoyoka, wunderkind guitarist Li-sa-X and bassist Houichi Terasawa. She regularly plays gigs in the clubs in LA now.

That interaction between Miku and Kanami stems from Miku flubbing her solo vocal part on a previous okyuji. That has now evolved into standard procedure for Kanami and Misa to switch sides of the stage during this song so that Kanami can stare down Miku or give her the side eye. Fun stuff! Keep those Band-Maid Mondays coming. I have been taking my tablet to my local coffee shop for it and very much enjoyed your reactions to the documentaries.
So... Nope! Kanami wasn't sitting there being proud of her student. Miku sings that part with her hands off the guitar. The reason why Kanami is sitting there looking up at Miku, is because she is sitting in front of the monitor that has the lyrics of the song. Miku had forgotten the lyrics for this song during a show previously, and Kanami was teasing her in this one, making sure she studied up, and remembered her part this time. That's why if you watch Miku when she starts singing, she's glancing over at her, and then if you listen for it, there is a bit of a laugh in her singing towards the end of her part. She also is surprised when Kanami walks up to her in the first place, because I don't think it was planned. If I got anything wrong, someone will come in an correct me, but that should be the gist. lol And Akane pulling that face at Saiki just before her solo, is so fun. Nothing can make her miss. Her going full Animal from Sesame Street, is just the best.
I've never seen a lyric video monitor at a 90-degree angle to where the singer is facing, so I don't believe that part even a little bit because it makes no sense. I know it gets constantly repeated in comments though, but so does a lot of inaccurate info. There are many fan cams of Kanami interacting and even sitting during this part. I think she simply sits when there's a convenient place to sit. They pretty clearly make a conscious effort to interact during this song.

We get to enjoy these wonderful Female drummers due to Nao, drummer for the band Maximum the Hormone.
Actually, I did a deep dive on this story. What I found out was.... This MV was shot on the second night of back-to-back shows, 13th and 14th February 2020. On night 1 they didn't play "Freedom" which I thought was a big surprise since it's their most played song live. So, I think the reason Kanami was watching Miku was that this part of "Freedom" was the 1st time Miku had a vocal solo part on night 2, as the first 5 songs of the night were all Saiki. I wasn't there, but from what I found Miku flubbed some lyrics for "Choose Me". When I posted these findings November 3rd, 2024 in the FB group, Band Maid Fan's Cafe, one person said that they heard that the flub happened in practice before the show. As I looked at the set list for the 1st night, I found that they played the entire "Conqueror" album in order. There were a few breaks where other songs were stuck in, like "Don't Be Long" and "Onset" back-to-back. A few live song debuts with Miku on acoustic and the show closing with "Blooming" and "Rinne". I said that I wished they would have done like Babymetal does by recording and packaging both nights together, both nights had superb set-lists. If anybody has info on this subject, please leave a comment. 😄🤘

Freedom is one of those songs where the guitarists aren't stuck next to their pedal boards. When this got played in the okyu-jis I attended I knew that Kanami-san and MISA-san will switch places. :D
The Maids generally like to troll each other on stage. Anytime you see Maids moving near each other that is what is happening. I believe they call it pulling faces as they try to get each other to break. Akane is usually a top target because she can't go anywhere, and she is an instigator in other settings. I can say this is my favorite band, and an addiction I have no plans on quitting. Over 100 songs and none disappoint.
I was already a fan of Band-Maid when i watched this live perfomance of FREEDOM, but after this... damn!, i'd became the biggest fan of Akane, she's so fuckin good!, i don't think i've ever enjoyed watching a drummer playing so much in my life

GR8 reaction guys!!!! Jimmy Page was in the audience (not sure if this particular show) but he was so impressed with Akane's drumming that he wanted to meet her! Akane thought she was being punked! But it was real! He said of Akane that she was the BEST drummer he had heard since John Bonham died!!!! There are pictures of Jimmy with Akane floating around out there.
Not this show. It was a lot earlier and at a contest where Page was a judge.
There's definitely a picture out there and you can find it easily by searching on Akane and Jimmy Page photo. That said I don't believe there's any evidence that he said that about her. Which makes no difference to me whatsoever because it's a great story even if all he said was boy you're a great drummer!

So, this was with a click track. That's incredible, Po! For the Yokohama show, Akane did a freestyle solo (no click) into "Blackhole." And if you can find the 2020 Line Cube Shibuya show, Akane opens the show with a solo into "Rinne." By far, the best show opener of them all. These are the top 3 Gorilla moves, Po! 🦍🍌
Agree totally with Kanami’s reaction to Miku. Note how she, as is done in Japanese culture, also lowers herself when observing with that big proud smile. The back stories together and separately are half of this band’s allure.

For me, after first seeing the "Thrill" video(a few years ago) I had to find more of Band-Maid. It was then I found "Freedom"(live), Domination"(live), "Play"(live) & "Onset"(live). I was now hooked on Band-Maid(for life) & proceeded to buy almost all of their CD's, DVD's & Blu-ray's. Now if I can just get to see them live in concert, it would make my dream come true.
Basically the same order of songs for me. Also purchased the cd's & blu-rays. I did get to see them in concert and at 61 I can say it's the best concert I have ever seen. Hoping to see them again in 2025. Fingers crossed. Hopefully they come somewhat near you so you can see them too. Make it a bucket list item. Peace!

The drummer is relatively inconspicuous, but I think the technique and sense of this group's drummer are the best. I also love the look on her face when she is enjoying the performance.
When the maids sit down (they do it a lot), it is to step out of the spotlight and give all the light and attention to the maid who have a "their moment", like a solo or do something special.
This is probably the first Band Maid video I saw and it's still one of my favorites. When I was a kid, you kind of expected to see a drum solo at a concert. Sadly, it is so rare these days. Hail Akane!

Kaname is Miku's guitar teacher, so she takes a personal interest in he development as a guitarist. note that Kaname parked her self in front of the teleprompter, just to keep Miku honest. And Akane has to be the the happiest drummer ever! To have Kaname as a guitar teach is just awesome.
Teleprompter? I’ve seen them several times and no teleprompter was anywhere in sight. The closest thing was the IPad Miku used on the latest US tours but that was used to help her with English for MC’s.

@@Greish-esquire Yes, there is! But not putting pressure on one and other or, as it is also part of this myth, that Minco is sabotaging for Miku by sitting in front of a screen with the lyrics. Sitting down is a way of getting out of the way, so all the attention is directed to the Maid in focus. You can see it in many performances by them. This is shown best during the bass/guitar duel in Hate!.
I have asked in the past which Maid they would like to hang out with for a day. Everyone had their favorite Maid and then explained why. I stated I would like hang out with Akane because you would probably meet some of her friends, her goofy sense of humor and take on life matches mine. Yes, it would cost me a fortune on the food tab, but it would be worth it and I probably look back an consider the best day of my life.

Jimmy is right, this is rock'n'roll at its finest. And seeing the Maids for a few minutes without their stage personas alone makes this performance special. I mean, we see everyone without exception - including Misa! - with a big smile, a great drum solo by Akane, plus a solo from Kanami in which she shows off a little for a change (quite rightly so!).... Yes! BAND-MAID are always fresh, yet familiar, though I can never quite place where that influence comes from. Maybe an old anime in the distant past.
Notice that whenever MINCHO is playing next to someone else-KOBATO, MISA, or Danni of The Warning-she always physically lowers herself into a crouch beneath her counterpart in a literal expression of humility. If you ever find yourself felling too big for your britches, you would do well to keep the humble muse KANAMI in mind.

I'm surprised that Big Pharma haven't tried to suppress this performance, it's what I use as an anti-depressant every morning. 'Proud' Kanami is actually trolling Miku, who had messed up the lyrics in a previous okyuji so Kanami is supervising her. We also get to see Misa and Saiki playing Hengao with Akane and totally failing to put her off, as usual. I suspect Akane's click-track actually listens to her.
As I might have mentioned before, I spent some of lockdown adding English subtitles to some of Band-Maid's mv's. For my translation of Miku's part (and it may well be only about 75% correct coz I'm not a native speaker) I have it as "Jealousy and Prejudice, distorted emotions...No choice but to lie. 1,2,3,4...It's all oblivious, laugh and being laughed at...Lie, lie, lie". There's probably a silent 'po' in there somewhere too!
Lots of happy drummers in Japan. Murata Tamu's nickname is smiling thunder. Kawaguchi Senri is always smiling. As is Akane's good friend Haruna. Even, and perhaps because of, Nao of Maximum the Hormone, the inspiration.
When Kanami knelt during Miku's phrase she was trolling her. By kneeling she blocked Miku's stage monitor because Miku had messed the lyrics (in itself funny, since Miku is the main lyricist) a show or two prior.
And Akane murdering her kit while smiling from ear to ear is just awesome.

The Freedom song is their happy song .
I've been following rock since the late 1950's and have seen a LOT of drummers come and go, but Akane Hirose is something special, even in Japan where you so many excellent drummers like Kanade Sato(KOIAI), Senri Kawaguchi(The Jazz Avengers), Mi Mi (Tokyo Groove Jyoshi), Rina(SCANDAL), Haruna(Lovebites), Junna(One OK Rock) and a host of others. But Akane is a cut above in my opinion, especially with her creativity. And this drum solo is the best I've heard in 40+ years. The way she weaved the drum patterns into the composition was magical, and her fills on a regular basis are works of art.
I've gone back and watched videos of legends like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich, and Akane ranks very close to them in creativity. And this is not to knock any of the other drummers playing today. And there's another young drummer who looks like she heading on the same trajectory. Her name is Yoyoka Samo, just turned 15 this past October, and is just amazing. She's from Japan but lives in the US now to go to school. The earliest video of her drumming is at age 3 and being able to keep a beat. She had her own UA-cam channel at 5 and has done some amazing drum covers over the years and has gained the praise of Ian Paice, Dave Grohl, Chad Smith and Jimmy Page, among others. If you want to see something cool, check out "Yoyoka's 12th Birthday Sessions" on YT, where she plays with some the best session musicians and singers from Japan. One of the songs that they kill is Joe Satriani's "Satch Boogie", with Yoyoka, wunderkind guitarist Li-sa-X and bassist Houichi Terasawa. She regularly plays gigs in the clubs in LA now.

So... Nope! Kanami wasn't sitting there being proud of her student. Miku sings that part with her hands off the guitar. The reason why Kanami is sitting there looking up at Miku, is because she is sitting in front of the monitor that has the lyrics of the song. Miku had forgotten the lyrics for this song during a show previously, and Kanami was teasing her in this one, making sure she studied up, and remembered her part this time. That's why if you watch Miku when she starts singing, she's glancing over at her, and then if you listen for it, there is a bit of a laugh in her singing towards the end of her part. She also is surprised when Kanami walks up to her in the first place, because I don't think it was planned.
If I got anything wrong, someone will come in an correct me, but that should be the gist. lol
And Akane pulling that face at Saiki just before her solo, is so fun. Nothing can make her miss. Her going full Animal from Sesame Street, is just the best.
I've never seen a lyric video monitor at a 90-degree angle to where the singer is facing, so I don't believe that part even a little bit because it makes no sense. I know it gets constantly repeated in comments though, but so does a lot of inaccurate info. There are many fan cams of Kanami interacting and even sitting during this part. I think she simply sits when there's a convenient place to sit. They pretty clearly make a conscious effort to interact during this song.
