    Found out something strange about the gas amount required for this generator (actually it's twin under TMG Industrial). I had assumed that it would need a 1/2 inch gas hose so hired a gas guy to install a tap from my entrance point to enable the correct amount of natural gas to be available for the 10500 generator. Just out of curiosity, I installed the correct 1/2 inch quick connect to the existing 3/8 barbeque outlet and it WORKS GREAT.. The unit seems to run perfectly even on a smaller 3/8 pipe. I added a draw of 3000 watts and no problems. I don't know if it would function properly at maximum draw of 6800 watts but this was quite a pleasant surprise non the less.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  5 днів тому

      Interesting normally if not right next to the main supply you would normally need a 1/2 inch at least for larger gens. May have to do a larger load test to see your limit. But remember if only the gen is running and not a heater or stove that will changes things.
      Thanks for the info

    • @TOURMANBOB
      @TOURMANBOB 5 днів тому +1

      @@johnnysweekends Yes, you have a good point !! This barbeque outlet is after the gas hot water heater and after the gas stove, neither of which were actually on when i did this test. I loaded it up to 3000 watts with no difficulties but I will try it when the gas stove is on and when the water heater is actually working. As you say, it might be a case of nothing else drawing gas while I was doing the test allowing it to work properly with the smaller outlet (but failing when the other appliances are drawing gas at the same time).
      The power will be off this coming Sunday 24th November for a full day for maintenance during which I will be powering the whole home with the generator using the smaller barbeque outlet. I will let you know if I experience any difficulties during the day long "test"

    Nice review!!! Seems like a solid unit with the likes of Honda or Predator options. They threw everything minus EFI at this model. Included battery charger is a new thing which shows they understand what consumers want. Kudos to Genmax for listening. With the included ATS this is a great solution for home use with a perma nent gas line. The problem with these units is fuel comsumption. If you have a lengthy power outage you need a large amount of fuel storage. For this reason I went with multiple smaller units knowing they sip fuel and can conserve if needed. With 40 gallons (8 cans) I can run for more than a week. This was tested after a hurricane. On the 4th day gas lines were significantly shorter and by 5th day you had access to multiple gas station options which were getting fuel delivered daily. I started refueling 10 gallons a day on day 6 just to be safe. By the 8th day I had power restored and used up my full 40 gallons. Ran 24/7 with 1 or 2 (night) and used 3 when needed during day. Only 120V so no hot showers :-(

      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      Yea they are coming along well. And now that I’m seeing more and more of the eu6500 and eu7000fi units having so many issues and at that price, it’s hard to justify it. But I stop recommend a warranty with most any of these no matter the brand

  • @joshua1577
    @joshua1577 Рік тому +4

    that sine wave was actually pretty impressive in my opinion for how much load you were pulling. Im impressed! How is Genmax's warranty as well as parts availability. Those are my 2 biggest worries for something like that. Something beneficial about honda's is their parts are available for a long time (priced like gold chains thought)

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      When I was in Vegas with Genmax they said they were camping up parts availability for there models and customer service. The parts warehouse is in sandiego but some parts are a little universal which can be found on eBay and such. But now they have thing you can replace and fix.
      But yea Honda you can get parts for a while. Although my inverter board for my eu3000is was discontinued and no superseded number was available so I got rid of it

    • @joshua1577
      @joshua1577 Рік тому +1

      @@johnnysweekends oh wow that sucks. Maybe thats because they released the Eu3200i? I do know that if fuel injector parts fail they are expensive to replace. I saw that the fuel injectors for the EU7000IS are like 550$. Maybe thats why Genmax hasnt gone fuel injection. Does fuel injection matter to you?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      Fi has its pros and cons like anything.
      For me I’m a pretty mechanical guy so I don’t have a lot of issues when it comes to storage and such.
      I under loads and jetting and more.
      A carb swap and parts are cheap like $30-$60 and doesn’t take long to swap small engine carbs.
      If fuel injection is new then parts will be spendy for a few years till there is a lot of parts and also aftermarket as well.
      It does start nice and is more fuel efficient so…again the pros and cons

    I have been considering converting my Honda EU6500i to run on natural gas. However, the additional cost is about $1000 for the kit and the natural gas guy to convert the barbeque outlet so I can hook up the generator. Instead, I would sell this Honda unit and buy the Genmax 10500 unit and have money in my pocket....but..but...it's not available in Canada and parts and service availability are minimal right now (and non existent in Canada), and the quality of the unit is still unknown (although I would take a chance on that). Maybe this will be doable some time in the future....(sooner rather than later I hope)

      They can be a little finicky depending on load or what’s plugged in.

    • @cayrick
      @cayrick Рік тому

      In the case of my Honda 5000 SX my gen was in a compartment and the GFI outlet ran a cooling fan. The GFI tripped but caught it in time. The manual states that this generator should not be used in medical applications. Now you know why! Reliability. When this happened to me the GFI's came out the next day. Unfortunately in our litigous society the manufacturers have to cover their collective butts. @@johnnysweekends

    The sine wave distortion right at 0v is probably due to no physical ground to reference. Read the manual it probably has a spot for a ground jumper if the connection you’re plugging into doesn’t have an earth ground.

I always get a small backfire after turning off the controls in order according to the directions. The spark plug is gapped correctly, so it just may be the LP in the line. It could be interesting to see someone crack the code for how to actually use the ATS. Great and all there is a cable there, but what do you plug it into? It seems there is some vaporware ATS box out there, but otherwise not sure what the average Joe is going to do with that plug. A quick look at the manual makes me think you could possibly control this with an R-Pi, some relays, and maybe some other hardware. Just have to figure out the nuances for sending the control signals before programming the R-Pi, but shouldn't be too difficult. If I understand correctly, start and emergency off are both pull-downs to ground and running is 12V off of the alternator. So going through the pin-out, you have 12V power, ground, a start pin to pull down to ground with a relay, an emergency stop pin to pull down to ground with a relay, and a 12V running power pin. So once you have these pins in order for your setup, then you need to signal your main power relays to break from shore power and attach to generator power while being careful to never have shore and generator power hooked up at the same time. It sounds doable, but then you gotta actually get it right. Then you need to get sign off to actually use it if they will even let you use whatever you cobbled together.
    The R-Pi programming might be pretty dumb in that it is more of a timer with some sensing. You may also put some extra circuitry to make it impossible to to have generator power and shore power connected at the same time in case there is a coding error, a problem with your wiring or even a fault with one of your relays. So:
    1. Normal: Sense if shore power is there. If shore power is available, sleep X time and check again. If shore power is lost, wait X number of seconds, check again, and then move on to Start.
    2. Start: Loop that senses for 12V running power. If no running power, then close and then open the 'start' relay to start the generator and wait X seconds for generator to start. Else (there is running power), break out of Start loop.
    3. Warmup:
    a. Sense for generator 240V power. If generator 240V power does not come on after X number of seconds, then go back to start.
    b. (Generator 240V power detected) Sleep for X seconds while generator warms up, then proceed.
    3. Run: After start, go here.
    a. Check once more for shore power, if not detected, disconnect shore power. Else (shore power detected), go to Stop.
    b. Wait 1 second and then connect generator 240V power relay.
    c. Loop checking for shore power sense and doing short sleeps between checks. If shore power is detected, sleep for X seconds and check again. If shore power still there, break out of loop.
    d. Shore power considered back, disconnect generator relay. Wait 1 second and then connect shore power relay.
    e. Wait X number of seconds (Cool down). Check if shore power is still there. If it is not, go back to top of Run. Else go to Stop.
    4. Stop: Connect and disconnect 'stop' relay to trigger the emergency stop of the generator. Go to Normal.
    Note: If the generator 240V breaker trips, this ATS controller routine will not know by design. The thought being a human should get involved at this point, fix the cause of the breaker fault, and then reset the breaker.
    Note: If your 240V generator breaker is off, then this will harmlessly go between Start and Warmup without performing any actual actions, just checks. This will make sure the generator is ready once you notice this breaker is off and possibly restart the generator in case you turn it off while trying to figure out what is going on. Or if the generator stalls for whatever reason, it will try to restart it. Once you flip the 240V generator breaker on, then this will just move on and get things switched over to using generator power.

      @ChaJ67 5 місяців тому +1

      @@johnnysweekends I suppose another thing is I saw someone go into one of the vaporware boxes out there and there was no central relay. Instead there is a relay for each side, shore power and generator power and they just tie together into one set of output lines. I would think you would want a relay where both inputs go into with one set of outputs and then it does a break before make switch mechanically with a single physical mechanism for all poles. The idea being it is physically impossible to back feed generator power into the grid. If the switch fails, then either it is stuck on one of the two inputs or it is stuck off. If instead you have what I saw in the vaporware ATS, if one of the relays has an issue, there is a risk of say the generator relay getting stuck on, even if small, then shore power connecting back or something to the like and causing a backfeed issue with a high powered generator. That could be bad. Even if it is rare, the B737 MAX dive like crazy issue ultimately happened when a sensor malfunctioned and without proper engineering, that led to two whole plane crashes and loss of all hands. So inherently safe is good.

    I would like to see a direct head to head vs the predator 9500. Predator is 6.8 gallon tank, 18.5 hours at 25% load which is 1900w continuous. This genmax is a 6.9 gallon tank rated for 14 hours at 25% load which is 2125w continuous. So in terms of efficiency per watt, it appears the predator is more efficient. The predator is about 20% more efficient per gallon than the genmax. I did a bit of math and it appears the predator provides about 5169wh per gallon while the genmax provides 4311wh per gallon. If anyone was curious. This would mean the predator would go through a gallon of gasoline in about 2.72 hours while the genmax would go through a gallon in about 2 hours. Overall predator is more efficient but genmax has slightly higher output 7600w continuous on the predator vs 8500w on genmax. If anyone has anything else to add/correct please drop a reply below! Good video Johnny! Let’s see that head to head 😤

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому +4

      Thank you.
      So some things that are different
      Predator $2499
      Genmax $2899
      Predator gas only
      Genmax tri fuel and includes all accessories
      Genmax longer standard warranty
      Genmax remote start
      Genmax quieter
      Genmax lighter by a couple pounds
      Genmax more output power
      Genmax cool display and a light 😂😁👍🏼
      Genmax 3% THD
      Predator 5% THD
      Now fuel consumption……I think they are all wrong as again it’s a pretty controlled test.
      So many variables like load and ambient temp can give different real world results
      Now predator says .37gph @25% load
      Genmax in the manual says 2.195 l/h or .58gph.
      They have almost the exact same size engine. 458cc genmax, 459cc predator.
      I can’t imagine they can be that far off unless Genmax runs a much richer condition than the predator which means they run a real lean mixture.
      So fuel tests very a lot unless you do the same unit on the same day with the same amount of fuel using the same
      Load. Sure can be done, but odd they would be so much different.
      Maybe the predator is more efficient gas wise…🤷🏼‍♂️
      But the Genmax wins mostly everywhere else.
      So until a definite fuel test can be done won’t know for sure.
      Good post for sure to give some back and forth pros and cons 😀👍🏼👊🏼

Higher wear metals, not full sine wave, etc. I would just like to see claimed results vs real world results for both! I think that would be an awesome comparison! Perhaps a bit long but I think it would see which is the “cleanest” power wise and which is the most accurate on their claims! Thanks for the reply Johnny!

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      Yea the wear metal test was skewed, I told him when doing this on generators you need to change the oil once or twice to remove the assembly grease. It’s a flatly looking grease they use to lube the engine while it sits on the shelves and can skew the oil analysis test.
      So hopefully he does at least one or two oil changes before the oil analysis next time to wash the engine.

    • @joshua1577
      @joshua1577 Рік тому +2

      @@johnnysweekends the oil test at the end was the second oil change for all generators in that video. Halfway through the testing he changed the oil after that had ran for a few hours. The oil analysis at the end was the second oil change after close to 100 hours on each generator so each generator did have a flush oil change ran though prior to the oil being analyzed. This is why it is worrisome. It’s not required in the manual to change the oil so short (within 2 hours like he did) but that first oil change should have gotten rid of any contaminants/etc. so the second oil change was a accurate result of normal use. The predator shut off from low oil during that test which isn’t good but the genmax is wearing metal in the engine for sure. You should do a engine oil analysis on this one to see if that is a model specific finding etc!

      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому +1

      Well I think no matter what no one can give you the correct answer. Some people can get buy with a 2200 watt unit which sips fuel. But only powers some basics.
      The Genmax is a nice unit and should power most anything you need. But normally when the power goes out you sacrifice and power what you need.
      Do you need to power one fridge and maybe wifi if it even works? Maybe two fridges and coffee ? Or the whole home and ac as well.
      It all depends what you can live with and for how long.
      A large generator burns a lot more fuel. Especially using natural gas. Just not as many btu’s so you get lower power out put just like it says on the specs.
      If you don’t want to worry about power and always have enough then the Genmax will fit a lot of needs. Just know it will burn more fuel.
      If you don’t need as much then a medium sized unit can save on space, cost and fuel.
      So once you decide what you really need to power then you can decide on a small, medium or large unit.

      All the new gens even the Yamahas are coming with Chinese made engines. The eu7000 is or was a good unit but in the forums and groups several are having problems with injection pump and a couple other items which is showing to be a spendy fix. Especially if the dealer does it. One post on there a eu7000 efi was under warranty and the dealer couldn’t get Honda to cover it, and the part wasn’t even available for several months. So that’s a $7000 paper weight plus the repairs. Honda is still good but I dont know if they are reliable like 10 years ago and more. I always recommend a insurance plan / warranty when buying.

    Science needs to invent those generators that make no noise at all and that we can use the sun as energy, and then spend day and night without need of electricity.Maybe in 100 years?.Little less?.

    If you have a contact at Genmax, ask them if it might be possible to introduce a model with significantly more momentary starting wattage from idle speed.
    I have a Predator 9500 right now. It has no trouble starting my 2.5T reciprocating compressor AC with a soft start, but it struggles to do the same from idle.
    Same thing with my well pump.
    Once stabilized my house rarely draws more than 5kw continuous.
    If they could pack some more reserve capacity into the inverter electronics everyone would benefit.
    15k peak (1s max) would be amazing.
    PS: This is still splash lubrication, right?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      Yes still splash lub.
      But the engine needs to be revved up so it can handle the load when applied.

    • @mwahlert
      @mwahlert Рік тому +1

      Of course, I fully expect an inverter genset's engine speed to vary by load.
      The point I was trying to make is such that when these units are idled down their momentary max output is limited primarily by the inverter electronics. If the manufacturers can beef up the reserve capacity in the inverter circuit (larger capacitors?) the starting loads could be handled with less dependence on the engine speed rapidly increasing. Certainly, this comes with a higher price tag, but I think it would be worth the cost of admission.
      With soft starters installed on my 2.5T AC (reciprocating compressor, not scroll) and my 1HP well pump, my Predator 9500 has no issues starting either of them when it is running full speed.
      If I've got the genset idled down in "eco mode" it can start the well pump without too much fuss, but sometimes the AC soft starter will fail to start the compressor because of inadequate current available. It is usually successful on a second attempt.
      All that said, when I run the genset in the summer months I usually end up leaving it at full speed so the genset isn't caught off guard.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      I agree it would be nice to have a genset be able to run at low engine rpm and store the energy needed in capacitors then boost to start the load like a mini soft start installed in the gen.
      And yea when temps get higher power of the gens start to drop.

    Good generator. 6000watts on natural gas isn't to bad. Can run a pretty good single person house with that or small family that isn't power hungry for energy. If your system has a well or city pump that isn't unpowered in a black out. You'd just hook this badboy up and run off gas to energy.
    Stick this sucker in the garage or a shed and run a hose extender for the exhaust out to a exhaust vent and you should be golden. No thieves to slap on or take the machine and it'd be way quieter from the other houses.
    From the looks of it. Natural gas will run a house at 6600watts either from the 220-30amp twist or the 4 pin 240-50 (at half power.). Kinda shame they only give the 8500watts to gas. And 8000 for propane.
    But if you're energy light for basic for AC/Heater system, Washer/gas-drier, Fridge, Gas water heater, gas stove/oven. You should be able to work for the rest of the stuff without any problems unless you're packing quite a few desktop PC's running over 500watts on a family set per kid/hobby/wife deal. Thought if your house is mostly electric of the AC/-Heater system, Water heater, Stove/Oven, and Drier. I'd say not to run those roughly at much on generator mode. AC/heater can already cook over 3000-4000watts for a Central system. Electric Drier will probably cook over 1500watts running. Electric stoves run 1000watts almost per burner. Not continuing the oven coil. And water heater probably cooks around 1500 or more watts or so when it clicks on. So for people who are more on the gas drive will probably be able to easily fly in a black out if it's local and not shutting your water or gas vines offline to. (Though i bet the gas bill will sky rocket lol.)

    But no showing of Natural Gas. And I see these Tri-Fuel generators all the time; but they NEVER use NG. What's going? Huh? So sad.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      The problem with natural gas is you won’t see good performance. You’ll see diminished numbers and people will think it’s a weak unit.
      But that would be with any generator running on NG. A 20% cut in power is a decent chunk and if it’s really hot it could be 30% or more, as heat will rob power with any fuel source.
      NG has way less btu and you’ll use 6 times the amount to generator the same power a gallon of gas will.
      Now this could work out if NG costs in your area are super cheap, and you don’t need that extra power. Running a generator at 80% and above it’s rated load all the time will decrease it’s life so you should upgrade to a larger unit if you are in that range.

      @@johnnysweekends No disrespect, but most of the Generator Companies now; are adding the NG feature also. Making it a "Tri-Fuel" Generator.
      Thus, I can't think the Company; would NOT put a big note; saying similar words of what you said.
      Secondly, I have had NG in my home for 48 yrs. Plus, I have several things that use NG...and we never had ANY problem. So why would it cause problems with the Generator?
      Again "NO" disrespect.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  Рік тому

      NG doesn’t cause “problems” with generators. It’s mainly two things using NG. Overall power output is less and engine life for generators is less on NG. It has less lubricants so engines wear a little faster.
      So if a NG gets 5000 hrs
      Propane 7500 hours
      Gasoline 10000 hours
      Diesel 15-20k hours
      But the having NG readily available is the convenience of a tri fuel setup. It’s ready you plug in and go if you are set up for.
      Trust me I like it as well. I’m also ready to run what ever fuel source I need. Normally I use propane or if I have enough gas I’ll use that up so it’s not sitting much. Which it’s just for my lawn equipment now that is almost all battery powered now.

    Underpowered toy.
    Need a LP generator that outputs a minimum of 12,000 running watts & outputs split phase 120/240VAC and 20,000 watt surge. Gasoline evaporates, turns rancid, is stored in containers that are susceptible to puncture or spill and is illegal to stor in bulk in most states without specialized containment and recovery systems, while LP stores in all weather in non puncturing containment that fuel levels can be monitored using ultrasound, pressure gauges and/or internal float and never goes rancid, stale or inert and most importantly, can be bulk delivered and stored on site.

      No? Running my entire home including 2.5ton central air, gaming PC, LED tv, dishwasher, deep freeze, fridge and a floor fan - only using 3100 running watts. Get a soft start for your central air and manage your use - this is plenty to keep a household going. I'm actually running the GM9000ied so even lower running wattage.
