The Canyon Ultimate has still not had a proper review! Will we ever get one?

- Just flicking through the reviews and was left really wanting these channels to get the tools out and show us the details rather than just reviewing the parts, price and weight. These are all just read throughs of the Canyon Press Release. The actual ride is influenced so much by wheels, tyres and saddle to make these ride reviews any use. I want to see the build quality, the usability of seat posts, axles, and accessory mounts. I want to see the BB alignment, and how the headset is constructed. I want to see the brake mounts and the paint finish. Tell me about the part @CanyonBicycles actually make. I don't care about all the parts I am going to upgrade and change, parts chosen in business meetings to only improve profitability and brand awareness. Come on @gcntech get the tools out, get into the details, take the close up pics, Tell us what you think!

It actually says more about the reviewers than it does about the frameset they don't want to upset the anyone so they give bullshit reviews well said for pointing this out.
It’s like read aloud the press release
This is a sad reflection of today’s (cycling) media. When I was a lad bikes/bits were independently reviewed and were reasonably unbiased. Today’s reviews are nothing more than “advertorials”.
Held to ransom on ad revenue.
Agree totally!
I totally agree. Just looking at the cervelo soloist frame vs the base 105 version. I’ll go for a 105 for an extra £500 and install my own groupset. So they either over value the fam3 or get some very very good prices on components.
Defo some smoke and mirrors going on.
Sadly GCN will never properly review things. It’s a money making advertising machine. Lots of deals to sell you stuff some subtle some not. Plus Eurosport want you to subscribe to watch racing. It’s was great early on but that desire to sell you something put me off a long time ago. Thank you that channels like yours exist
In 2015 I bought a canyon endurace cf bike fitted with shimano 6800 groupset. The headset adjustment was awful to set up. If adjusted so as not to knock it was binding, so I felt it was better to have it slightly too loose rather than binding. Another issue was the front mech cable routing, which was internally routed through the downtube where it exited just above the bottom bracket then routed through a plastic cable guide and round the bottom bracket, between the chainstays then finally up the seat tube to the front mech itself. After 2000 miles the cable cut through the plastic cable guide like a cheeseburger. My own solution was to route the cable through a 150 mm length of brake outer cable that went round the bottom bracket. I'd not buy a Canyon again. I was mesmerised by the stunning spec for the price, seemed too good to be true and it was. Thanks for the highlighting the potential pitfalls of direct to consumer bike buying.
really hope you got that Headset sorted.
Canyon is going with the same strategy as Giant was going on 00's. They are selling bikes at lower price, supplying two Pro-tour teams, to make the brand recognisable. In next few years they will increase prices to Specialized/Cannondale level, but first they need to push the brand.
I rarely look at GCN, and those other similar YT channels, they are either shills or advertising spaces. There is no critical reviews on any bikes and equipment. I’m glad I have found your channel, refreshing to see similar thoughts on the bike industry.
Thank you Dean.
I like GCN for entertainment value, but I watch it knowing that their "reviews" are essentially just press releases for those companies.
We'd be more okay with their pricing if they showed us proof that they have finally ramped up a true QA/QC service that no frame escape the scrutiny of.
Also, one has to point at that the rear stay to seattube integration looks oddly similar to the design on those dreadful dolan frames, same OEM molds maybe ...
I suspect open moulds often arise from prototyping. They are expensive intricate things to waste. I’m certain a few factories would repurpose a rejected mould here and there.
Back in days of old (pre UA-cam), magazine reviews of bicycles included a complete strip down of the components to a bare frame. The frame was then measured and the information published. The idea being that prospective buyers could get an idea of build quality. Sample size of 1, but of some help.
I think I’m going to go on a one channel unpopular mission to bring those days back!
@@Mapdec cool. If you’re doing requests can you reverse Brexit?
😂
@@Mapdec That would be great and would garner lots of views me thinks.
Another thing of interest would be reviews of some of the "dream builds" on UA-cam where people hardly ever seem to check for and/or correct direct brake mount flatness and alignment, facing of the bottom bracket area for BSA or other screw-in bottom brackets etc.
@@overthetarget9401 I suspect that they actually do those things but they just don't show it on camera because it's not as exciting as those bling parts most people love to see.
If all the outlets did what you suggest, and give out honest reviews, then the manufacturer wouldn’t give them the bikes or accessories to “evaluate”. They’d all need to do what the Torque Test Channel does, and buy everything outright.
I see where you’re going… or rather they would put the effort into obtaining a good review, rather than leveraging one through marketing spend.
The red frame with 105 is the old version, thats why is cheaper
Aeroad and Ultimate are both using the CP0018 integrated cockpit, and to this date, it hasn't been possible to buy this cockpit separately from Canyon in case you want a different stem length. You are locked in to what comes with the bike unless you can find someone to swap the cockpit with. And there are several reviews finding the stem length on the new Aeroad and Ultimate (e.g., 100mm on size medium) too short. I just don't understand how no one complains about this, and none of the Aeroad or Ultimate reviews mention this. If you have the new Aeroad or Ultimate, you simply cannot change the stem length. Full stop. You are buying a bike, on which you cannot make one of the most basic bike-fit adjustments. Good luck.
Crazy isn’t it.
Would like to find the proper format to request a review or an opinion on some road bike frames like the BMC Teammachine 01, Factor 02 VAM, Look 695 RS, and Time Skylon please.
The only way you will ever get independent reviews is if a journalist purchases the bike themselves. This is kind of our long term hope for the channel. We are a long way from that though.
@@Mapdec I do see where you have a high opinion of the Look. So I was wondering about your opinion of the Factor and BMC?
@@terrywalker7127 I can’t recall ever having worked on a Factor. BMC is hit and miss. I have some customers running decade old models, I have also had one where the carbon BB lip broke away from the frame. My current faves
High end, Look or Time
Mid range, Argon 18, Ridley, Scott,
Value, Cinelli, Forme,
@@Mapdec Than you very much for your opinion. I have a great deal of respect for you and have learned a lot from you quickly.
I had previously commented on my cousins woes with Canyon carbon frames, having had 3 fail and now being on his 4th, he was onto his 3th frame after the previous 2 failed due to cracking of the carbon on the chainstays...Well make that 4 failed frames after he has suffered yet another failure of an Aeroad (replacement for his failed SLX) Do not buy a Canyon!
