I saw him in Porto this week, I was amazed, great performance. While he may not have quite matched the level of DC's performance on "You Fool No One", he was just incredible. But I gotta say, Ash Sheehan is one hell of a drummer, he also did a great solo
Still the best album rankings in the business! Informative, concise and well thought out! I'd be interested in some new album rankings for legacy bands that have released more albums since you ranked them. There's bound to have been some movement within the ranks and it's always interesting to see where the newer albums slot into the fold.
Thanks for this album ranking, Pete. Not too many of these in the personal library so planning to use this episode for some listening homework. Appreciate your time spent on these weekly Ranking The Album episodes.
Been a fan since i heard his two DP albums in 1984 age 17. Saw him in 1994 in Glasgow with almost all of Europe as his support band. I was literally in tears seeing him live. Saw him again Edinburgh 2005, my girlfriend and i watched him soundcheck and chatted to Bobby Rondinelli, drummer with the Lizards. I got Glenn's plectrum and poster and for both gigs i was on the guest list. Glenn is a survivor and like Jon Anderson his voice just got better with age.
I've been a fan of most of Glenn's stuff for some time, be it Hughes/Thrall, Black Country Communion, Dead Daises, Purple, Sabbath, Trapeze, but I was unaware he had much of a solo career, aside from Play Me Out. Thanks for the video, it's inspired me to check these albums out.
Got my ticket for july in northampton england , the venue is just 5 mins down the road from my apartment , how cool is that !! Fav album is play me out ❤❤❤
THX so much for putting your list together, Pete. Despite being "the voice of rock," Glenn really doesn't get the recognition that he deserves. If you've read his autobiography, it's a miracle that he's still around at all (let alone performing at a high level). I'm going to play 'Resonate' right now and may just chase it with some California Breed.
Glen had it with Mel Galley on the Medusa albums live in Dallas 1973 show. Seafull Wow perfect. He got in with Deep Purple 3 ..Burn, Stormbringer,... Tommy Bolin... Then they ''funked'! up the Great Purple Machine .Master Ritchie moved on to Dio his fifth prodigy singer in Rainbow. Not all of them could make it without his added magic.
Right now I'm heading to Avilés (Spain) to see the man again playing "Burn". A true legend. My top 3 favourite GH solo album are "Soul Mover", "Feel" and "Building the machine"
1) Resonate 2) Addiction 3) Songs in the Key of Rock 4) Soul Mover 5) From Now On… 6) Building the Machine 7) LA Blues Authority Volume II: Glenn Hughes - Blues 8) Feel 9) The Way It Is 10) Return of Crystal Karma 11) First Underground Nuclear Kitchen 12) Music for the Divine 13) Play Me Out 14) A Soulful Christmas
I've been hoping you'd do a Glenn Hughes video for some time. He's an insanely underrated artist with an amazing back catalouge. Here in the UK, he's not that well known outside of Rock circles but i'm always recommending him to people. For me Addiction is his best album, but to be honest, he hasn't made an album i didn't like. Thanks for another great video Pete.
If you can find it, Glenn's double live album SOULFULLY LIVE IN THE CITY OF ANGELS recorded during the early 2000's is incredible - - the setlist is a great well-balanced mix of renditions of songs from his solo catalog, Hughes/Thrall, Deep Purple and Trapeze. Also, the first PHENOMENA project album from the mid-1980's - - Glenn sings all the vocals on this one - - is essential listening if you are a true fan of The Voice Of Rock.
RESONATE/ 2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣6️⃣ my no 1 as well, and after watching PETE for years , I felt he would have it one as well. I’m dead serious. Tremendous episode. Keep your “ freak flag flying” again. Thanks PETE 👍💯
I love Glenn Hughes' singing AND his bass playing. Have seen him perform several times in recent years (he is still "The Voice of Rock" ) including at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. My favourites of his solo output: 1) Addiction 2) Soul Mover 3) Resonate 4) From Now On 5) Songs in the Key of Rock 6) Return of Crystal Karma 7) Building the Machine 8) First Underground Nuclear Kitchen 9) The Way it Is 10) Feel 11) LA Blues Authority - Volume 2 12) Play Me Out 13) Music For the Divine
@@bengalgangster Thanks Bengal! I have all his stuff on my Ipods and MP3s on regular rotation, so looked through the playlists from each album and came up with what sort of constitutes my favourite albums, more or less.
It's incredible how his voice is still powerful after half a century. Saw him here in Brazil some years ago. My favourites are, no specifical order: the first album, SOUL MOVER, MUSIC FOR THE DIVINE and FUNK. For the curious ones, he has many participations in tributes: Dio, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, Queen, ELP, Pink Floyd and, of course, Jon Lord.
I haven’t heard the last one but of the ones I have, here are my rankings: 1. From Now On (1994) 2. Addiction (1996) 3. The Way It Is (1999) 4. Soul Mover (2005) 5. Songs in the Key of Rock (2003) 6. Building the Machine (2001) 7. Return of Crystal Karma (2000) My very favorite album of his overall is the first Hughes Turner album from 2002. That one even rivals Deep Purple’s “Burn” IMO.
Building the Machine is a personal fav, bought the CD as a teenager in the late 00s and thought he looked awesome on the cover. Nice variety of songs including the Purple cover, and cool, laidback vibes in contrast with the more retrospective previous works to my ears.
I love this one as Glenn's music has played a big part in my musical life. I personally believe his work with guitarist/Co- Songwriter J.J. Marsh has been his pinnacle. But that's just me.
Great job Pete, love Glenn Hughes! I agree with your top choice Resonate is so heavy, crunchy & groovy all at the same time, it's amazing! Number 2 for me is From Now On, love it start to finish! In 3rd would be Songs In The Key of Rock! The whole catalogue is strong with very few "weaker" tracks as long as you have a taste for the FUNK & SOUL and can appreciate it for what it is! The man is simply a talent unrivaled at his age, honestly! The work he's doing with the Dead Daisies these days smokes!! All the best Pete Keep Rockin'!!
Hi Pete, I've loved your band ranking albums segment for a long time, and I was really looking forward to this Glenn Hughes albums rankings. Glenn has been my favorite rock singer bass player for many many years since seeing him with Deep Purple on t.v in 74 California Jam show. I've also seen him solo like 10 or more times in NY. I pretty much agree with your rankings as far as his best solo album being Resonate followed by Addication which are both very heavy and grooving. I'm seeing him and Malmsteen in August, I would have preferred Glenn do his solo stuff instead of Deep Purple set again but anytime you can get to see one of the greatest rock singers do his thing you go no matter what stuff he's singing. I always look forward to your shows, you're a huge music fan like myself and I really love your take on hard rock and prog music. Thanks Pete for the great informative stuff.
I have a ton of Glenn Hughes material, but I think I only have three solo albums. 1. Resonate 2. Blues (L.A. Blues Authority Volume II) 3. Building the Machine
Mi ranking 1) From Now On... (es la base del increíble album Burning Japan Live) 2) Feel 3) L.A. Blues Authority Volume II: Glenn Hughes - Blues 4) The Way It Is 5) Play Me Out En el medio puede ir cualquiera , son todos sólidos. Y el peor Addiction. Saludos gente!!
Late to the show for Glenn Hughes solo. I already see that I agree with you, as I often do. First one I heard (by accident) was Soul Mover. I was pretty much astounded. I heard the latest BCC '24, having never heard them; very good, but wasn't necessarily 'wowed'. Soul Mover was wowing. Today, I'm halfway through Resonator. Stunning, wowing, awesome!!! For some reason the first song that came on was 'Flow'. 🤯Right now I stopped to watch your ranking to see if you would say what I'm saying. >>> I think it's very interesting that he keeps using these Swedish musicians; JJ Marsh and then the guys on Resonator. Something in those Swedish Meatballs? I also love the way his choruses and/or bridges are usually very melodic, even going back to Trapeze. I think it's a European thing, adding melody, as opposed to just laying purely into the blues. Thanks Pete!
The best vocal performance of GH is on the live album Burning Japan Live and on a live show that i saw in july or august 2012, but we are ranking his studio albums so my number one is From Now On from 1994, number two is Return Of Crystal Karma, number three is Feel and number four is F.u.n.k from 2008, i believe that Resonate is not his strongest album, it is a limited heavy/hard rock album, though it is a good album, cheers for your ranking and God bless.
My fav albums from Glenn are: Play me Out, Music for the Divine & Addiction, but I love the entire catalogue, he's fantastic solo or in groups. Cheers.
Cool!! Not sure if you have already done a video for this but it would be really interesting to see a ranking of best sounding albums production wise either on Hudson Valley show or with other shows
13. Return of the Crystal Karma 3.0/5 12. First Underground Nuclear Kitchen 3.0/5 11. Feel 3.0/5 10. Songs in the Key of Rock 3.0/5 9. Building the Machine 3.5/5 8. Music for the Divine 3.5/5 7. Play Me Out 3.5/5 6. The Way It Is 4.0/5 5. From Now On 4.0/5 4. Soul Mover 4.0/5 3. Addiction 4.5/5 2. L.A. Blues Authority Vol. II 4.5/5 1. Resonate 4.8/5
My favourite rock vocalist, a great songwriter, amazing performer, and he can work with just about anybody. No bad albums, but no question some are better than others. Return Of Crystal Karma is my personal fave, Blues is incredible, but outside of those two, everything else gets about the same amount of spins for me.
I've got more than a few Stevie Salas albums all the way back to his Colorcode days. George Lynch played on the LA Blues Authority album too, I think on the track 'I'm the Man' if I am not mistaken.
Crap. I missed this live. I am a HUGE Glenn fan. I almost prefer his collaborations though. Kind of like Holdsworth. His voice is always great though. Gets better with age.
Great set of reviews, but four worthy (to me) songs weren't mentioned: Walking on the Water, the epic from From Now On; If You Don't Want Me To (Allyson's Song), the winsome ballad from the same album - the song was written for a terminally ill friend of Glenn's, and is very emotional; Homeland, another From Now On song, co-written by Mel Galley, and top-notch; and Coffee & Vanilla from Feel, a sassy, sexy number.
Love the channel Peter. Are any of the gang or you into the "Jesus Lizard"? I think an underrated band. Of course David Yow's vocal are a mess in the mixes but that was their sound. Their Album "Shot" was probably their best mainstream mixed album but "Liar" and "Goat" were pretty spectacular. Duane Denison on guitar, David Sims on bass, and Mac on drums. Great "LIVE BAND". I know the mid to late 1990's got weird and corporate moving forward but there were still some bands before the mayhem. Some of the "Squares" must like this band
Good show, Pete. I own them all but without reviewing them I'm not going to pick favorites between my kids. I can say that you like Play Me Out more than I did. Maybe I was too disappointed in its direction to give it a fair chance? I do like my copy of Play Me Out that has the disco album he sang on Four On The Floor as bonus tracks.
I suggest you double dip on these videos Pete and come back again in a year or whatever and rank all albums Glenn sings on. Same with guys like Cornell, Ozzy, Anselmo, Weiland, Gillan etc. Just saying. Enjoy your Sunday Pete. We love this channel. Thank you.
I've been diving into his solo career over the last 2 years,( since listening to Burning Japan Live) this ranking will help. But what's with the Album covers......From Now On is cool but after that I'm not sure what's happening.
So I have 28 Hughes albums under his name including collections, boots & live records. As Pete said there are 13 official studio releases plus A Soulful Christmas (which I don't have). I'll throw 'em all into the mix here except for the best of's/anthologies (listed separately at the bottom): 1. Soul Mover 2. The Way It Is, From Now On, Burning Japan Live, Addiction, Play Me Out 3. Live At Maritime Hall, Songs In The Key Of The Rock, Soulfully Live In The City Of Angels, L.A. Blues Authority Volume II 4. The Official Bootleg Set Vol 1, Feel 5. Building The Machine, Different Stages, First Underground Nuclear Kitchen, Live At Wolverhampton 6. Resonate, Return Of Crystal Karma 7. Talk About It, Music For The Divine, Live In Australia For collections: This Time Around, An Anthology 1970 - 2007, 1996 DEP Sessions (really an Iommi collab), A Tribute To Tommy Bolin (Hughes And Friends), Sessions Man (excellent 4-cd boot from '91), Four On The Floor ('79 album featuring an uncredited Hughes on vocals plus Richie Hayward, Paulinho Da Costa, Jeff Baxter, Al Kooper), Justified Man: The Studio Albums, Greatest Hits/The Voice Of Rock, From the Archives Volume I - Incense & Peaches...In terms of total discography my Glenn Hughes playlist is about 330 tracks deep. I always thought that Emerson/Hughes/Bonilla, Hughes Turner Project & Hughes/Thrall were really interesting, plus the Robin George/Glenn Hughes album Sweet Revenge (not to mention Trapeze & Voodoo Hill)
my ranking here goes 13 songs in the key of rock 3.0 stars 12 feel 3.0 11 play me out 3.0 10 building the machine 3.0 9 soul mover 3.0 8 music for the divine 3.0 7 the way it is 3.5 6 first underground nuclear kitchen 3.5 5 resonate 4.0 4 from now on 4.0 3 la blues authority 4.5 2 return of crystal karma 4.5 1 addiction 4.5 great video pete Cheers!!! 🐯🐯
Great list, bengal. We definitely had some differences. Next month my list could change. Some of these albums I want to give another listen or two. 🎶💜💜
Gillan was unbelievable at child in time, but Hughes is the only purple singer, who still could do this song. I’d love hear his voice on child in time.
I am aware of Hughes from his Deep Purple years when he had a big drug problem ( not sure which drugs though). So does he still have a drug/ performance problem ? Or is he now drug free ?
Very seldom You rank one's most recent album as the best one. Surprised. I wouldn't say that "Resonate" is musically stronger than "In The Key Of Rock" or, say, "Feel", but it is one of his best albums for sure.
As said above these albums are all varying degrees of ‘solid’. I’ve listened to all these at some stage but there’s nothing close to ‘great’ on them. The song writing just isn’t strong enough.
Saw Deep Purple MK 3 in 1974 in Chicago. Couldn't stand yelping Hughes trying to replace Gillan and Glover .Made a career from one great DP album and 2 half rock half funk DP records and is doing it to this very day. Mentally scarred ever since! [Sorry Pete. I know that's your guy.]
I can honestly say I've loved everything Glenn has done on record including all his collaborations.
Addiction is my favourite solo album by Glenn Hughes. It’s dark as you said Pete, and heavy. Great riffs and Glenn is in fine form of course.
Having battled an alcohol problem from age 13 due to ...childhood stuff i agree. The last track I don't want to live...still gets me every time.
I saw him in Porto this week, I was amazed, great performance. While he may not have quite matched the level of DC's performance on "You Fool No One", he was just incredible. But I gotta say, Ash Sheehan is one hell of a drummer, he also did a great solo

Thanks for finally doing this. Now you have to do all the collaborations. 😉🤘🏼
Glenn is an alien! I adore the man. One and only! What a VOICE!!!
A long awaited episode - thanks Pete.
Thanks for covering this Pete. I hope someone will write a book looking at all his official releases.
Finally you did Glenn!!! Songs in the Key of Rock, Music for the Divine, Addiction, F.U.N.K, Soul Mover, From Now On, LA Blues, so many killer albums!
I saw the Hughes/ thrall band at the old Waldorf in Frisco, it was a beast of a show...like pete said...to had they didn't do a follow up.....

The track "You Were Always There" on "From Now On..." is a Hughes / Thrall song, intended for the follow up record.

Four On The Floor was an interesting album (with Skunk Baxter, Richie Hayward, Al Kooper, Paulinho Da Costa)
Where is "Play Me Out" from 1977 I beleive? Great album.
For me the best album is From now on 1994 - Glenn hughes. Greetings
Play me out, First underground Nuclear Kitchen, The wat it is , Glenn sings the blues Soul provider.
So I have 28 Hughes albums under his name including collections, boots & live records. As Pete said there are 13 official studio releases plus A Soulful Christmas (which I don't have). I'll throw 'em all into the mix here except for the best of's/anthologies (listed separately at the bottom):
1. Soul Mover
2. The Way It Is, From Now On, Burning Japan Live, Addiction, Play Me Out
3. Live At Maritime Hall, Songs In The Key Of The Rock, Soulfully Live In The City Of Angels, L.A. Blues Authority Volume II
4. The Official Bootleg Set Vol 1, Feel
5. Building The Machine, Different Stages, First Underground Nuclear Kitchen, Live At Wolverhampton
6. Resonate, Return Of Crystal Karma
7. Talk About It, Music For The Divine, Live In Australia
For collections: This Time Around, An Anthology 1970 - 2007, 1996 DEP Sessions (really an Iommi collab), A Tribute To Tommy Bolin (Hughes And Friends), Sessions Man (excellent 4-cd boot from '91), Four On The Floor ('79 album featuring an uncredited Hughes on vocals plus Richie Hayward, Paulinho Da Costa, Jeff Baxter, Al Kooper), Justified Man: The Studio Albums, Greatest Hits/The Voice Of Rock, From the Archives Volume I - Incense & Peaches...In terms of total discography my Glenn Hughes playlist is about 330 tracks deep. I always thought that Emerson/Hughes/Bonilla, Hughes Turner Project & Hughes/Thrall were really interesting, plus the Robin George/Glenn Hughes album Sweet Revenge (not to mention Trapeze & Voodoo Hill)
my ranking here goes
13 songs in the key of rock 3.0 stars
12 feel 3.0
11 play me out 3.0
10 building the machine 3.0
9 soul mover 3.0
8 music for the divine 3.0
7 the way it is 3.5
6 first underground nuclear kitchen 3.5
5 resonate 4.0
4 from now on 4.0
3 la blues authority 4.5
2 return of crystal karma 4.5
1 addiction 4.5
great video pete
Cheers!!!

Great list, bengal. We definitely had some differences. Next month my list could change. Some of these albums I want to give another listen or two. 🎶💜💜
@@weirddebbiem1619 thanx sweetie, and thank you for pushing me to do this, it was fun!!💜💜
@@bengalgangster You're welcome. I was returning the favor. Yes, it was fun. 🎶💜💜
Great list Bengal! My number one has always been Addiction! Glenn at his deepest, rawest, hardest and most melodic.
@@garyh.238 hi gary thanx , great minds......................................cheers!!🐯🐯
Hughes should be the lead singer of Purple mkIII & IV
As much as I love Glenn's voice no one could replace Coverdale. But my admiration for DC definetly came from this channel ahaha
@@PSN489 Glenn Hughes can sing anything....Gillan and Coverdale can not...anymore!
Gillan was unbelievable at child in time, but Hughes is the only purple singer, who still could do this song. I’d love hear his voice on child in time.
@@mutant_bluesglen is not as good as he was either
@@georgekielit wouldn't be as good
Resonate is a real belter!
Say what you want, the opening tracks on all the albums are great.
Future ranking ideas
WASP (with Mr arm tattoo BryceTalksMetal and Rich Catino?)
Gamma Ray (with Rich Catino?)
I am aware of Hughes from his Deep Purple years when he had a big drug problem ( not sure which drugs though).
So does he still have a drug/ performance problem ?
Or is he now drug free ?
He's been sober for 25.5 years
@@androgynygoat I am so glad he cleaned up, unlike Tommy Bolin.
Very seldom You rank one's most recent album as the best one. Surprised.
I wouldn't say that "Resonate" is musically stronger than "In The Key Of Rock" or, say, "Feel", but it is one of his best albums for sure.
Peter when you gonna rank the album s of Slade
Never owned a single album other than the first live album.
thats a case for the UK connection like they did for Status Quo where Pete has nothing to say.
@@seaoftranquilityprog the worse albu5of Slade is that live album. Old New Borrowed and Blue . Slade In Flame. And Slayed is the creame
How about a Raven ranking of the albums!!??
Hugues and thrall best and only
Number 0: Fused
You have to rate "Christmas with Glenn Hughes" as the absolute worst in his solo catalog... what was he thinking?
Looks like he spent a fortune on some of those album covers.....
As said above these albums are all varying degrees of ‘solid’. I’ve listened to all these at some stage but there’s nothing close to ‘great’ on them. The song writing just isn’t strong enough.
Immense singer. Possibly not the greatest song writer as despite his output he has no classics for me: album or possibly even tracks
