Absolutely! Mike has been a member of TTB since day 1! Derek & Susan kept their band on payroll even during the shutdown in 20-21. TTB Is like a family. R.I.P Kofi Burbridge who is sorely missed from the music scene 😢
You have definitely added more homework for me today PETE, but this is why I tune in daily . All great stuff, I have learned from you/ co hosts etc. I’m slapping on your no 1 1️⃣9️⃣9️⃣8️⃣pick right now. Thx again for your time 👍💯
Huge Derek Trucks Band and TTB and ABB fan. Really appreciate your review. My ranking is more skewed towards the newer DTB albums but that may be b/c I also really love TTB. And as you mentioned they were evolving into TTB towards the end. Mike Mattisen is an active member in TTB. Live he takes the lead vocals role on a few songs each show. He is also an essential part of their backup vocals. I get that TTB may not be your thing. I think they offer quite a lot of what folks say is missing from DTB in TTB is often there. Just most subtle. I am curious why you skipped the live albums in your rankings. Both are probably in my top rotation.
I do like TTB…just not as much as DTB. And, I don’t include live albums in the rankings. It’s too easy to just automatically make the live albums the #1.
We'll put, Sam. Saved me the trouble. Matteson is extremely instrumental with much of the writing for TTB, more than merely backup/co-lead... especially with the I am the Moon project...
Enjoyed seeing Kofi play with ARU, Derek's band, & TTB. According to Oteil & Derek Kofi is a musical genius & coulda shoulda been bigger than Oteil actually! Enjoyed Yonrico Scott's drumming in Derek's band & also got to see him in Royal Southern Brotherhood a supergroup that included Devon Allman & Cyril Neville also.
"Something To Make You Happy" was written by Paul Pena, who also wrote a song Susan Tedeschi has covered for years ("Gonna Move") and he also wrote Steve Miller's hit song "Jet Airliner." Well worth checking out his short discography - another somewhat tragic music tale.
Thanks for this ranking, Pete. Other than maybe flipping your top two selections - at least for now - your ranking seems about right. Have to admit a fondness for that first album even with all the covers as it was just amazing to see another slide guitar player come out of the Allman Brothers "family," Time to pull these out for a regular relisten during the coming summer months.
I don't know if I'd call him 'primary' vocalist...they all do plenty of writing. I just miss him as the main vocalist, like he was in DTB. To me, he's just a small part of the big band in TTB, and he has the kind of voice that should be front & center.
Thanks, Pete. I'm just trying out the Derek Trucks Band and this is very helpful. Soul Serenade is the only one I've picked up and listened to so far. Your description was spot on! Looking forward to trying some more. Are the live albums also good? Oh cool, you're now mentioning those as well at the end. Thanks again.
Derek Trucks Band had fire and fun. Ttb is too mellow and Susan's voice starts to grate on the ears for a whole album. I miss Mike Mattison being up front with Derek's guitar
I have the 1st 2 albums, love them, & never bought anything else by Derek Trucks (not sure why). Oteil & Kofi (Ko-FEE) Burbridge played here in '80s Top-40 bands...(still have a demo I played on with Kofi) anything with those guys is gold. Early Trucks' bassist Todd Smallie sounds alot like '80s Oteil. IMO.
Great ranking, and I echo your sentiments about missing DTB, Pete... but as we've lost Kofi and Yonrico, and I'm not even sure about the Count, what's the point? You should try to find the side project "Frogwings" CD....short tour and live release with Derek, Jimmy Herring, Oteil, Kofi, Butch and Quinones on drums, and Popper fronting (I know your sentiments about harmonica, Pete, but still...the guitar duo is worth it)
@@jazzpunk I like Herring a lot, my Jimmy Herring playlist is 180+ tracks: Aquarium Rescue Unit, Frogwings, Jazz Is Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, Project Z, Widespread Panic. Also some good solo albums, a nice team-up with T Lavitz, Richie Hayward & Kenny Gradney on Endangered Species. Some more fusion on Gary Husband's "England Green", a great version of Steely Dan's "The Fez" with The Royal Dan
I haven't heard all of these, so this video will be really useful for me. I've heard the first three and like them quite a bit, but stopped listening for some reason. My ranking: 3) The Derek Trucks Band (1997) 2) Out of the Madness (1998) 1) Joyful Noise (2002) I like Susan's solo stuff, too, but never really got into their colab albums. Thanks, Pete!
Love the Derek Trucks Band. Not a fan of Tedeschi Trucks Band. I do like Susan seperately from the TTB. Derek and Susan together don't do anything for me except make me miss the Derek Trucks Band even more.
Mike is a fantastic vocalist he also does some vocals in Tedeschi Trucks band too. I like TTB a lot and seen them live, but I like Derek Trucks band too and Been listening to them too not all their discography yet some but with this video it will help me listen to their entire catalog.
One of my very fave musicians working right now, a real slide guitar genius on Duane's level. So sticking strictly to Trucks solo/band stuff, looks like (including live) 9 total albums/ I've got all of them except for Songlines Live. So my ranking: 1. Songlines & The Derek Trucks Band - Songlines: "Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni" - wow! Also "Volunteered Slavery", plus 8 other great tracks. Almost a 'perfect' album. The debut is fantastic too, it really doesn't get much better than this! 2. Already Free - their 6th album. One reviewer noted "homegrown organic looseness". Quite simply great American rock music. TBH if some of the vocals were a bit better this would be a three-way tie for 'best' DTB album. The music itself is just consistently great. Honestly I almost declared a three-way tie for #1... 3. Live At Georgia Theater - A really fine live band, "Kam-ma-lay" is a fantastic jam. A 15 minute "Sahib Teri Bandi/Maki Madni"! 10 totally fantastic tracks 4. Out Of The Madness & Joyful Noise - On Joyful Noise the mix of styles doesn't quite work as well for me as on other DTB albums but still expertly played. Also not all of the vocals work for me (there are like 5-6 singers featured here on various tracks). "Frisell" is a standout track. Out Of The Madness has the wonderful "Look-Ka Py Py", "Pleasant Gardens" & "Alright", "Young Funk", "Kickin' Back" 5. Soul Serenade & Road Songs - How great is "Afro Blue"? "Bock To Bock" gives a different-sounding vibe, very jazzy (so is "Elvin"). Love "Rastaman Chant" with its prominent flutes, very good covers of "Key To The Highway" & "Anyway" 6. Songlines Live - last just because I don't have it. However in looking at the 20-track set list & given how good the band is live this no doubt would rank right up there... Some other stuff: Live at Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival, maybe a good 'substitute' for Songlines Live (15 tracks from 2007 (this is an 'unofficial' release) but the issue is the sound quality...A record called The Junkyard Orlando - this is early Derek from '91 recorded live, he's 12/13(!) years old. Probably for die-hards only though. It's a covers album (SRV/Hendrix/Allmans) - the sound is sketchy...No need to spend a lot of time on the Tedeschi/Trucks band, to me quite possibly THE best current band going. Their 4 part I Am The Moon 'album' taken as one release is easily my #1 album of 2022...Overall Trucks has built a GREAT discography (solo, with wife Susan Tedeschi, with the Allmans, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes, Jazz Is Dead, Widespread Panic...) - my Trucks playlist is now some 250 tracks deep & growing!
Sounds like there is a lot to explore here. I really like the TTB is am tempted to work in backwards, though Soul Serenade does sound fascinating. I held off on I am the Moon as I wonder if they will release it as one album, especially as I still need my hard copy! Might have to wait a while though… I’m guessing they would be fire to see live.
TTB is one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. Every music fan needs to see Derek live
Mike Mattison is a regular backing vocalist in the tedeschi trucks band. Sings a few songs on their albums and during live shows
Absolutely! Mike has been a member of TTB since day 1! Derek & Susan kept their band on payroll even during the shutdown in 20-21. TTB Is like a family. R.I.P Kofi Burbridge who is sorely missed from the music scene 😢
"The Allman Brothers jamming with Pat Metheny Group" is enough to get me to start my exploration of DTB with Soul Serenade.
You have definitely added more homework for me today PETE, but this is why I tune in daily . All great stuff, I have learned from you/ co hosts etc. I’m slapping on your no 1 1️⃣9️⃣9️⃣8️⃣pick right now. Thx again for your time 👍💯

Hi Pete. I got most of Derek Trucks Band albums. Very interesting and eclectic mix if songs.
R.I.P. Kofi Burbridge & Yonrico Scott
I've never heard the 2 first albums (I've never even seen them!). I'll have to check them out. Thx Pete!
Cheers.
6. Out of Madness
5. Self-titled
4. Joyful Noise
3. Soul Serenade
2. Already Free
1. Songlines
Absolutely love everything from DTB, TTB, and what Derek played on from the ABB as well! Haven't steered me wrong yet:)
Songlines on 6? It has great music! Love his middle eastern influences
I remember seeing buddy guy at the chance when he started getting his recognition and he brought out Derek to play he was probably 15 at the time
Buddy also brought him out when I was living in Atlanta back in the 90s
Already Free is my favorite, followed by Soul Serenade and then Songlines
"Something To Make You Happy" was written by Paul Pena, who also wrote a song Susan Tedeschi has covered for years ("Gonna Move") and he also wrote Steve Miller's hit song "Jet Airliner." Well worth checking out his short discography - another somewhat tragic music tale.
Pena's s/t album & New Train are good. The original version of "Jet Airliner" is like a different song, not nearly as upbeat as Miller's take
Thanks for this ranking, Pete. Other than maybe flipping your top two selections - at least for now - your ranking seems about right. Mattison a primary song writer in Tedeschi Trucks Band. Major vocalist.
I don't know if I'd call him 'primary' vocalist...they all do plenty of writing. I just miss him as the main vocalist, like he was in DTB. To me, he's just a small part of the big band in TTB, and he has the kind of voice that should be front & center.
Hi pete, matt mathison is in TTB as vocalist
Right, but his role is more subdued.
Your bottom two are my top two haha. Great video Pete!
Nice video...
Excellent have you done or thought of doing widespread panic?
I don’t have nearly enough of their catalog.
Already Free is my favourite DTB album. Very Southern
Derek Trucks Band had fire and fun. Ttb is too mellow and Susan's voice starts to grate on the ears for a whole album. I miss Mike Mattison being up front with Derek's guitar

...the debut does have a few Jazz Classic covers. "Mr.PC"... listen to the drum solo. He's playing the melody. Pretty damn cool.
Now I need the 2 Live albums!
Jimmy Herring needs a Rating, too.
He has a killer cover of The Beatles "Within You, Without You".
Great ranking, and I echo your sentiments about missing DTB, Pete... but as we've lost Kofi and Yonrico, and I'm not even sure about the Count, what's the point? I really miss this band. I'm just not that into Tedeschi Trucks, I think he's held back in that band. Anyway great vid Pete, Thanks
Hey, Pete. Is Derek Trucks related to the late drummer Butch Trucks? I don't really know that.
Butch Trucks is Derek's uncle.
I see a Blonde Tele. When do we see you play them>
Love the Derek Trucks Band. Not a fan of Tedeschi Trucks Band. I do like Susan seperately from the TTB. Derek and Susan together don't do anything for me except make me miss the Derek Trucks Band even more.
Yeah exactly! Susan's vocals do nothing for me. I miss Mike Mattison so much
The weird thing is that Mike went to do his solo career but without Derek he is just not that insteresting
Agreed. Tedeschi Trucks Band just doesn't move me
