  • On June 6, 2009, Gina Bartiromo hiked to the top of Yosemite's Half Dome under marginal weather conditions. She and a hiking partner got to the top, but on the way down, she fell about 150 ft outside the west side of the cables. She estimated she was tumbling at over 35 mph. She hit an upward facing slab of granite that stopped her instantly. In this video interview, Gina describes the horror of the day and her extensive recuperation. Mr Half Dome conducts the interview.

    Incredible story - thanks for posting this and sharing some wise words.
    We were on holiday in SF and Yosemite from the UK this summer and sadly bailed out of Halfdome with our two daughters choosing to hike some of the smaller peaks instead. There's certainly no shortage of spectacular places to hike in Yosemite! I try to teach my kids to push and challenge themselves but always be smart about it (and always be properly prepared)! One day they'll be back I'm sure!
    Good luck Gina - amazing recovery! And thank goodness for all the mountain rescue folks, they do a fantastic job.

    An incredible survival story Gina. I've been watching several videos of hiking Half Dome and am breaking out in a sweat. Several years ago, I tried hiking Angels Landing at Zion and found a newly discovered fear of heights. I did not continue. As much as I'd like to do this hike, there is no way I could do it. Thank goodness for all the first responders risking their lives to save others.

      Thanks for your post. I LOVE the Angels Landing hike...I've done it twice and can't wait to do it again. I did Half Dome two days ago...I will never do it again...I was in fear for my life the entire way up the cables and the entire way down.

    Wow Gina. What an amazing story. I have been twice. first time I blistered out and had to go back. Came back when I was 25. Left late in morning. Got to cables at 2:30. got stuck behind someone trying to overcome his fear of heights. Finally made it to top by 3:30. Coming down about the same place I started getting vertigo and was harder going back down. Got back to happy trails about 8:30pm. Hiked in the dark for 2 hours by moonlight. So glad to hear you are O.K. You are truly an amazing person.

    Wow! Incredible story and recovery! Climbed the Half Dome Cables yesterday and one of the poles and wood planks came out as a man was descending right next to my Dad. I didn't realize how dangerous that was until now! Luckily everyone is safe and the pole and wood plank was placed back in its correct alignment. Amazing story and I wish her even more recovery so she can return to Yosemite and hike Half Dome successfully!

      +FAST GIRLS FINISH FIRST First of all, I commend you on your persistence and your brave drive to move forward in life. Recovering from a spinal injury is no small feat and it's not to be taken lightly. Congratulations.
      My sincerest recommendation to you in particular is to not hike Half Dome. It's a strenuous hike, 5+ hours of stair master is how I describe it. Even though I was an avid hiker and could pull off getting to the sub dome, the weather and circumstance play such a key role... too many factors to play into the scenario that only add to the challenge of recovered spinal injury.
      IF you do choose to go, I highly recommend training for it. And reading Rick Deutsch's book One Best Hike Yosemite's Half Dome AND for certain, start EARLY (sun up), wear proper hiking shoes (I did and it still wasn't sufficient. That rock is slippery even when it's not raining/snowing), bring layers of clothing, a day's worth of food, emergency rain gear, flashlight, cell phone, tell someone where you're going, when you start and when you finish, and don't go if there are any clouds in the sky... it's not worth it.
      I wish you the best on your continued achievements. Goals are vital to keep you moving forward in life, risks can be thrilling ... but weigh the risk with the outcome. I'm a certified Life Coach and would be happy to offer you a complimentary coaching session to see if coaching can be of help to you as you follow your heart and live your absolute best life.
      You've come far and am thrilled to hear you strive for more,
      Gina

  • @vangmountain

    I found this story researching half dome and it boggles me why so many people refuse to consider using harnesses. I understand it's a bit slower if you are clipped in but no one says you have to. It's just there in case you need to such as was the case here. Inclimate weather, as a backup, as a means to allow you to safely rest, as a means for one to safely collect oneself, and as protection from any of a host of things that can go wrong.
    I always believe in preparing for the worst. Once wet, that granite becomes super slick. Now you are forced to depend solely on your grip to keep you from falling. Unless you are a climber, even a fit individually will eventually tire out. If I do give it a go, I intend to clip in and not only that, I intend to have friction hitches on in case i need to anchor and pause in between posts or need to go outside the cables for whatever reason. A big concern of mine are the people ahead. What it they fall? What if their gear falls. Impact from falling gear and people can severely injure a person or cause one to let go. I understand probably 98% or better climb this with no issues but does anyone want to willingly be the 2%? Personally, I don't.

    • @HikeHalfDome
      @HikeHalfDome  Рік тому

      Personally I do. Read my book to learn why harnesses are actually more dangerous - it's called a snapped neck. In 100 years there has never been a domino effect. You afraid of elephants flying into the cables? Live life..don't hide under your bed and be perfeclty safe. Just don't do this hike. Good decision for you. But not 40,000 others.

    • @vangmountain
      @vangmountain Рік тому

      @@HikeHalfDome Somehow I don't buy it that you want to willingly be the 2% that face problems on half dome like this lady. Yep...sure, you'd willingly go take this fall just because you want to prove that you live on the edge a bit. Maybe you're an adrenaline junky. I don't know, but what I do know is no adrenaline junky is going to willingly go take this fall and see what happens let alone you.
      As to your book, I can't see why anyone would want to read it. You site a statistic, but ignore the very fact that people have died climbing half dome. And yet, you believe you are smart enough to convince me and others that a harness is less safe when there is absolutely no statistics to prove it. Please, do tell me how many people have died or had their neck snapped using a harness on half-dome? According to your book it's more dangerous so please provide the statistics to back this claim. Please, just tell me how many climbers have died using a harness to scale half-dome. And mountaineers, and arborists, are they safer without harnesses also? Right, it's better to splatter 2000 feet at the bottom than to have one's fall be retarded by a harness and in that process, run the risk of snapping one's neck. With poles at 10 to 12 ft apart, sliding down a 45 degree incline is not going to snap one's neck. Is it possible, yes, but the odds would be super slim. You have friction, you have the poles loose connection, and you have the cables sag. All these things will work to reduce the impulse on your body and thus reducing the chance of bodily injury. And if you have a friction hitch, your body isn't going to go anywhere to begin with so I'm not sure where neck snapping comes in. Glad to know you've scaled it and you didn't use a harness, but that fact alone does not make using one more dangerous. I've used harnesses in completely vertical positions to no ill effects so I can't imagine it being worst on a 45 degree incline. Then again, maybe I'm clueless and haven't a clue what I'm talking about. 😁😁😁
      As to living life a little, don't assume just because you sped past Chuck Yeager in your mustang and he in his mini-van driving, that somehow the man hasn't lived. His choice to drive that mini-van belies the life he's lived.

    • @HikeHalfDome
      @HikeHalfDome  Рік тому +1

      @@vangmountain Yes, Van, you ARE clueless. Have you done the hike? If you have trepidation - don't.
      If you read my book - I said a via ferrata is the only harness that should be used. Know what this is? If you are really a climber, you will. They have 2 cables ith give - just like climbing ropes.....If you fall they stretch and give so you don;t stop instnaly - but you konw that. (?) Most use homemade straps around their gut. Picture this....you are right next to a pole...10 ft above the one below. You slip and slide down those 10 feet then the rope tightens around your 160+ body and stops you immediately. Your head keeps going but your torso doesn't - bingo neck facture from momentum. And/or, you may spin upside down and smash your head on the granite.
      Note the PARK will not sell or rent harnesses. Called a high probabliltiy of a lawsuit.
      HUH? "Willingly take a fall." where'd you get that? She was up in bad weather...read again...BAD WEATHER. When the rock is damp it's like motor oil. It's in the Wilderness, and the ranger will not stop you. Assess the risk and deal with it. There are no stats on harness falls.
      I've been up 42 times and learned alot. Again - don't do it!!! But passing judgement on others is ...well....tacky. You can be prefectly safe under your bed.

      @@HikeHalfDome @Rick Deutsch First and foremost, READ YOUR REPLY! The very first line was, "Personally I do." Now read that in the context of the ending of my post. Any half-way decent reader, would see that you are saying that you would "WILLINGLY" be the 2%. Or maybe you can't comprehend what you read. I said probably 98% climb with no issues. Ergo, 2% would run into issues be it inclimate weather, fatique, dehydration, mental breakdowns or whatever. They encompass the to 2%. I said I personally didn't want to WILLINGLY be a part of that 2%. Your direct response to thar was, "PERSONALLY I DO."
      Did you fail English class all your life? Context says you are so narcissistic, you claim you willingly want to be this 2%. That includes this lady's fall. I did't write your reply, you did. Right of the bat you came off like a douchebag. And here you are, telling me to read about her fall as if I didn't already know. And all this stuff about half-dome, AS IF YOU ARE THE SOLE SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE ON IT. Really Deutsch? REALLY? In this, the GOLDEN AGE OF INFORMATION, the only source is Deutsch's book. Really? Naah, zero youtube videos that talk about how slick the granite gets when wet. Nothing to show you the cable system. Nothing to tell you the dangers of inclimate weather. Nahh, nothing at all. It can only be found in a Deutschbag. 42 times you have done it. Bravo, Bravo! Why anyone would do it 42 times is beyond me. But hey, that's what the Deutscher does!
      "Your name tells you exactly the kind of person you are...a real "Deutsch"bag! And I guess your narcissistic self thinks you're the only person on the face of the planet who knows what a via ferrata is. And climbing it 42 times makes this "Deutsch"bag think it proves to the world that a harness system is more dangerous than not using one at all. This is ths mentality of a douchebag.
      FYI, I have rock climbing and tree climbing gear so I think I know what I'm talking about and I think I may have heard of a via ferrata b4, but not quite 100% sure. Thanks to DEUTSCHBAG's infinite knowledge of via ferrata, I now have reached nirvana and am one with via ferrata. Thanks Douche!
      As to your physics, please go back and learn some physics 101. If a person had a makeshift rig like that which you speak of, their neck would NOT be breaking as your narcissistic self thinks! Please, SPARE US THE STUPIDITY. Or maybe I'm too stupid and didn't realize the head is the only source of mass on this 160lb frame. Is that the case Deutsch? Or maybe you forgot that the bulk of the mass comes from the torso and that the head is connected to the Torso via the neck. And when this body is arrested by this here described harness, the area the experiences the highest impulse is NOT THE NECK, BUT the waist area where the harness is connected to the body. AS SUCH, IF THERE IS GOING TO BE ANY BREAKING, IT'S GOING TO BE THE SPINE AT THIS CONNECTION! Have your ever heard of torque? Bending moments? You might want to look into Deutsch's book of knowledge and read up on them. Ever heard of elasticity? Impulse? You do realize the spine flexes right? Just like trees, fishing rods, high rises? Wonder what that purpose is for? Maybe just mabe it's a means to dissipate energy? Hmm...the neck being at the end of an elastic system, would it experience the most energy or the least? Hmmm? The tip of a fishing rod is much skinnier so would it take more energy or less energy to bend it compared to the larger more rigid lower sections. Hmmm...what does this tell me? Go figure, I'm too stupid so maybe if you can dig into that infinite knowledge source of yours, and tell us what all of this tells is about your "snapped neck" physics!
      Classic Deutschbag and narcissistic syndrome--they think they are the only one in the know. Honestly, dont embarass yourself with your daily deutsch of physics. Maybe you're a "camodian". You and your best friend "John " must laugh all day long with these deutsch physics jokes. With all these deutsch physics, why would anyone want to read your book.
      And harness statistics, yeap, you absolutely killed it Deutsch. There are no statistics on it. Hmmm...NO DEATHS...NO SNAPPED NECK anywhere to be found and why is that--BECAUSE NO ONE TRACKS IT! As such, ANY HARNESS SYSTEM IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN THE DEUTSCH SYSTEM because statistics says YOU CAN DIE AND MANY HAVE USING THE DEUTSCH SYSTEM, but statistics makes no mention of harnesses so they MUST BE MORE DANGEROUS!
      Of course the mighty Deutsch forgets that if the harness prevents something bad from happening, THERE WILL NO STATS TO REPORT, as the stats only track bad events that occur. Could that be why there are no DEATHS, BROKE BACK, AND SNAPPED NECK stats? Just maybe they haven't occurred? Ask your book? It may know.
      And lastly, you keep reving that mustang's horses if it makes you feel special. Just know there are plenty of Chuck Yeager's in mini-vans smiling at you. 42 TIMES! Man, I would me so, so, so proud! And people brag about scaling Everest! That is nothing compared to the great Deutsch's 42 dome ascents! All hail the great Deutschbag! 😁😁😁😁😁
      Edit: If you haven't a clue, anyone utilizing any harness system is ALSO UTILIZING THE DEUTSCHEBAG SYSTEM! The harness is not a climbing system, it's an arrest system, A BACKUP FOR THE DEUTSCHBAG SYSTEM! As such, FOR THERE TO BE A FAILURE IN THE ARREST SYSTEM, THERE FIRST HAS TO BE FAILURE IN THE DEUTSCHBAG SYSTEM. If this logic doesn't make sensense, please reference the Deutsch book. Do you even comprehend the irony of your argument that somehow the use of a harness system is MORE DANGEROUS?

    I am not a hiker or a climber. Why do they allow people to climb that thing without any harnesses or secondary safety rope ? I mean I see some people seem to be attached on an extra rope to the line, and some are not. And why do they let people climb it if they don't do more frequent routine maintenance to it to make sure the poles and cables are secure ? The alternative is having rescue personnel having to risk their own lives to safe someone like this unfortunate woman.

      Michael Price There's nothing "reliable" to latch onto. The poles aren't drilled into the granite, they sit in a hole and can be pulled out. A body sliding off of Half Dome which is latched onto the cables risks potentially pulling out sections of the cables and making lots of other people slip to their deaths.

    • @sPIRIToFmYSTERY

      Matthew P. Mattson: Not exactly true, otherwise all climbers would always pull out the loose poles as they climb. Also the heavy steel poles are in tight vertical 5" deep slots unto rock face, so they don't just slip out sideways. All the poles do is keep the heavy cables waist high, for climbing ease. Plus some folk do use external gear, but at their own discretion. The NPS doesn't supply climbing gear, and the climb is at your own risk, just like with rock climbing. In off season, many still climb the downed cables, though not recommended by the NPS. This guy does crazy climb in about 8.5 minutes!

      @@sPIRIToFmYSTERY Clipping into the cables is NOT recommended by NPS at the base of the cables. They watch thousands of people ascend the cables and although they haven't tested falling while clipped in, I trust their judgement. Unless you have proper shock absorbing climbing cables, you're probably not going to survive anyway. As I've already stated -- the cables aren't designed to take falls from people ascending! The assumption is that the force generated by a fall would at the very least knock others off balance and potentially cause them to slip and fall or break a pole or two. Reclipping at every post slows you down, distracts you, and makes it hard to pass other hikers.

Question though, how does the NPS watch climbers.. do they have a web cam on top? Ranger is stationed at bottom of subdome to check permits, but he can't see the cables from there. Also they down the cables off season due to potential damage to poles and boards from weather.

With a crowd of people on the cables it' would be very hard to overcome their combined weight to remove one from the hole. A rescue was made once down towards the bottom where all the poles were pulled up which allowed the cable outward to the dude stuck beyond reach. I think it was like 20-30 feet. But you would need competent people for such a rescue. I think there was a story or video you can see.

    Pausing at the 3:30 mark....Gina, wow, amazing. She looks so beautiful...hard to believe this really happened. I climbed to the top 2 days ago and I will never do it again. I have a HUGE fear of heights and I was acutely aware that if I lose/miss one grip (hand over hand), I'm dead. On my way down, one of the poles on the right almost came completely out of its hole when I gripped the cable right before it.

    In another video of a guy that had the whole incident recorded of the fall, showed the moments leading up to her fall,her actual fall, and after the incident. He didn't show the moment she fell, for obvious reasons. But had she stayed at the spot she slid to at first, she wouldn't had fallen the depth she did. Several other climber's hollered at her to stay put, until they could get to her and help without even needing a rescue teams. But her panic took over and she tried to climb up by herself and that's when she fell the rest of the way.

      Gina, You are welcome. It is really extraordinary that you survived that fall and lived to tell about it. I accomplished Half Dome hike with my college friend Sheldon in May of 1990. The cable part (boards and posts) weren't set up, but we both were determined to make it. It was hard making it up because of the tugging back and forth on the cable with other climbers. Also a few times I had to find a shelf to steady myself on while someone passed. I never let go of the cable. I probably won't ever do Half Dome again. I have climbed Mt. Whitney and recently climbed Mt. Lassen (August 2015). Getting too old I guess. Thanks again for your story of survival. Keep Smiling Brent

    A lot of people train for climbing half dome via the cables by hiking, stair master, etc. But not many think about increasing their grip strength. It would be wise and make the trip much more pleasant if people would spend several weeks hitting the rock gym ahead of time even if they are not rock climbers.

    Great story! So glad she's ok. Btw... With today's technology I don't understand why they haven't had structural engineers design a pre fab ladder that actually bolts rigidly to the granite. Is it because they think the granite will fracture? I have no doubt that it could be done otherwise. They could map the route with laser measuring tools then design the ladder to fit snugly to the rock. Honestly, it just appears to be so haphazard at present. Where safety is concerned expense is necessary.

    • @HikeHalfDome
      @HikeHalfDome  5 років тому

      Mike - the cables were put up in 1919.....a rope was used before. The cables have been on the verge of being taken down - NOT improved. It's an adventure - a goal and a journey. ONE thing the govt hasn't made a hassle. It's in the wilderness....so you deal with the risk...BUT - only 4 people have fallen off the cables since 1919 -when they are up for summer use. And 3 were weather related....consider that 40,000 a year do it. Not bad.

      A boat load of people die either falling into the rivers or just above the falls almost every year, should they build a pipe to divert the water around? More people are killed by cars than anything in Yosemite, should they ban cars at the border to the park? Deer kill a lot of people at the park, should they eliminate the deer? Maybe they should just close the park because it's the wilderness and it's dangerous. Or, like you say, maybe they ought to build an elevator and plexi-glass walls around so no one falls off. Which they do also.

      K1230, Thanks for your comment. In the Wilderness (Half Dome) people are able to try and extend themselves to reach a goal. In the wilderness, one is to assess the risk of doing an action then deal with it. While I agree that too many people attempt the HD hike & are not prepared. The use of a homemade harness with clips is not recommended. If you fall, you may slide down 10-feet to the next pole while hitting your head and garroting your body. If you intend to use a harness, get a real mountain climbing one that goes around your waist and thighs. You also need two shock-corded straps with 2 carabineers. The rig is called a "via ferrata." You will need to release and re-clip 68 times going up and coming down. You should do a lot of practice doing this before your trip. It will take a very long time. If you feel you cannot get up the cables, consider not doing it.
