  • Hiking up the cables at Half Dome in Yosemite National Park is a huge bucket list item to accomplish. In this video, Ethan hikes up the cables at Half Dome at Yosemite National Park. We hiked up Half Dome and reached the summit by going up the cables. The cables at Half Dome are super steep! We used harnesses when hiking up the cables to make it safer going up Half Dome. Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the world, and Half Dome is one of the most popular things to do while at Yosemite National Park. Ethan was only 12 years old when he hiked up the cables at Half Dome. We made this trip to Yosemite as a coming of age trip for Ethan since he turned 13 in the Fall. Many people ask, how old do you have to be to climb the cables at half dome, and we felt like Ethan was a great age to climb half dome at 12. The key was using a harness on the cables for added safety.

Fantastic video. Experienced dads know that "bro"ing your nervous teenage boy is the most effective way to relax and distract them. Perfectly executed!

I can just imagine the helivac call: "What's your emergency?" "Yeah, my boot fell off Half Dome, and I don't want to hike down in my approach shoes, they're so expensive!" lol

"Extremely safe" would mean using two carabiners. When they switch over they are unconnected and in no way "extremely safe"....what a joke. Call it what you want but this is not being safe at all.

Ask the people who fell off half dome if they needed a harness. No you can't because they are no longer with us. Use a harness especially if weather threatens.

Nine deaths on the cables over about 100 years. Five of those in the wet. Two by lightning. The hike to Half Dome has killed about 40. As a highly experienced hiker/backpacker I'd say that Half Dome is a jack off.

Do you have a link to carabiner?

    • @Vim_Tim

Looks like a Mammut Bionic Mythos Twist Lock. I don't think they produce that model anymore. Any large, climbing-rated twist-lock (not manual screw-lock) carabiner would be perfect, e.g. BlackDiamond RockLock Twistlock. Screw-lock is slow and triple-action carabiners are hard to operate with one hand.

Cool video, but for anyone wondering if you need a harness setup, NO! You absolutely do not need this setup. 99% of the people going up do not have harnesses. And to quote the Ranger checking permits "If you need a harness, you probably shouldn't even be attempting this". That mainly goes for adults, but I totally understand why you and your boy had one.

Impressive young man to do that hike! Couldn’t handle the constant ‘bros’ tho. You are the adult and the kid’s father; that young man deserves more respect from you as your son than to be referred to as ‘bro’.
