This video compares vanilla and the TFTV mod, which overhauls the base game completely, and discusses which version of Phoenix Point may be better for you. The pros and cons of Terror From The Void and standard Phoenix Point are both discussed, and I also give some tips for new players on how to get a better overall gaming experience with Phoenix Point. To all you first time players choosing TFTV, don't make the same mistake I made thinking that the hard difficulty (third option out of four) is good for an XCOM veteran or just someone who likes a solid challenge.
Avoid the urge to pick that difficulty at all costs. There is so much in this game that is very unintuitive and the only way you learn to navigate this stuff is unfortunately through trial and error. Or, by referring to their wiki as you play. Otherwise you could be going down the wrong path for dozens of hours until you finally realize how royally you messed up...
Don't do what I did. Be better.

+1 it is a very deep game even if you are familiar with the XCom style - there's a lot more systems in place

Phoenix Point is a very different beast compared to XCOM, strategic and tactical.
      Example is the shooting,
      - XCOM is just a numerical dice roll if line-of-sight is yes,
      - PP is about LOS & angles, and just because you're behind a "high cover" pole doesn't mean you're safe because you're still behind a pole; Contrary you can stand in the open behind an enemy as cover, chances are the enemy is getting shot more than you.

TFtV might make me give PP another shot. I played it when it came out, and it didn't have enough cosmic horror to really feel Lovecraftian.
Likewise it didn't have enough UFO / XCom to feel familiar. The worldbuilding is extremely interesting, but the units, monsters, music, and art style don't make PP stand out a lot. Maybe TFtV will lend it some character and charm.

The music I think is a big weak point for PP, it doesn't do enough to set the atmosphere and at some points is nearly completely silent lol. I like the monsters but I agree most don't stand out as much as they could.

That's funny, the music is one of the things that stands out most to me. I think PP has a ton of personality, especially compared to the standard flying-saucers-and-laser-guns XCom stuff. There's not many games out there with this sort of sci fi horror element, like The Thing, The Mist and Annihilation as a strategy game. Maybe not "Lovecraftian" per so tho.

I enjoy the departure from the standard aliens theme and actually really like the concept and idea of how the virus started and monsters came to be. It's a nice change of pace. I like the concept of the evolutions, but sometimes I wish it was more than.. This monster with bigger gun

My path to TFTV was starting on vanilla for a couple hundred hours - getting experienced and falling in love with PP in equal measure. I suspect my journey is the same for many: in that as your experience grows, the imbalances of vanilla PP become apparent. And so TFTV then becomes a ray of sunshine. Vanilla PP actually starts to feel like Beta PP, and TFTV should have then been base game.

Agreed, most players probably had a similar journey. I played vanilla for the first few DLCs and stepped away for a bit. I would say it's almost better to learn that way if time allows because it really helps to make you appreciate the changes TFTV brings

I just fired up TFTV the other day and immediately one of the main characters thanks you for "watching his content back in the day." There's a lot of references to "influencers" and "fake news" and other contemporary social media-era lingo that took me right out of the game and destroyed the atmosphere. You might as well have the characters saying "bruh" and conversing in zoomer-speak. I understand this is a fan made labor of love, but the writing could use some work. This probably seems like a weird thing to complain about but for a mod that claims to be all about improving the atmosphere and immersion of the original, bad writing stands out like a sore thumb.

I think thats an understandable complaint, writing is a big piece of the atmosphere. Honestly i completely forgot about that stuff being in the intro scenes until I read this comment

Hey there! This video definitely helped a bit with my decision. I played Vanilla phoenix Point around 5 months ago (no DLC) and liked it quite a bit. I’m a bit worried that having 5 new DLCs will be a bit overwhelming for me, but if what you said about the mod redistributing the DLC content is true, I think I can handle it. Cheers!

They change it around quite a bit, for example the Ancient weapons are rewards for certain missions as opposed to a (hard) long quest line. They also make some of the later game loss conditions much more manageable and less sudden. Festering Skies can even kind of be pushed off a bit if you don't care much for the air combat stuff.
It's still a decent amount to manage but that's kind of Phoenix Point. I think it's more complex then XCom personally. If you are thinking of grabbing the dlc I would waiit check out prices during the steam summer sale starting in about a week.
