The finish on that Partscaster is awesome 👍👍 Yes... this IS a good video and i gotta say it was very informative too. I have previously bought a couple of guitars you have reviewed, (Lead 3 and Classic Vibe Starcaster,) and your reviews helped me make a good choice. I have been wondering about the candy apple green player plus since it came out... and as soon as one of my local stores gets one in, i will probably add that to the collection too. Keep up the good reviews Ryan. 👍👍

I bought a "Player Plus" Mexican-made Jazz Bass from Sweetwater about six weeks ago. I'm really impressed with the fit, finish, and playability of it. The only thing I changed was the plain white pickguard for a white pearl one, which was a flat-out game-changer on the looks. It sounds great -- the days of the Mexican Fenders being scrap are over -- they got their game together!!

I started as a Gibson player,( knowing little beyond that they seemed easier to play and maintain) and it was actually an SG with P90's that got me interested in single coils.
Over the last decades, I've been through the full range of Fender products, eventually becoming knowledgable enough to start building my own.Having built over 20 Strats and Teles,( including a couple baritone's )- and having sold more than half of those, - I've come to even more appreciate the original specs.Leo was unquestionably a genius, as you can modify, but you can't really beat ANY of his original concepts.Although I still enjoy the occasional turn on an SG,a Firebird, or even the occasional Jackson or Ibanez, they're not the sounds that keep me engaged and still playing.Strats aren't easy to play,or for the faint hearted ; any criticism you might make says more about the issues of the player.

When it comes to the pickups as heard on the recording side, the Xaviere sounded very much like the PRS. Only the bridge on the Xaviere sounded like it was wound slightly hotter (or was just closer to the strings maybe?). I can see why the Fender Player Plus would rank highly because the noiseless pickups are nice at killing the single coil hum at the cost of being a bit more laid-back; perfect for doing demos as you do.

I think if you gig, the PRS & Fender Player Plus stay at home or in a studio, that means the X & Partscaster are going to be the stage & road warriors. I liked the Partscaster for looks, but not big on GraphTech saddles. In the final tally, Fender 27, PRS 30 & the X & Partscaster tied at 32. Price dependent, the X & Partscaster for that tight of an overall score are easy winners vs the Fender & PRS. As the Xaviere is under $ 300, it just reinforces my contention that one could easily get a Sterling by Music Man Cutlass CT30 or CT50 & end up saving $ 300-500 on the PRS & even more on a Player Plus and not have any regrets. I saw an Anderton's video, sound like John Mayer without breaking the bank. They chose a Squier Bullet at 100 British Pounds.
Like my guitars (not all of them are strats), the cheapest & ugliest one is the loser for a tighter scoring. But believe it or not, it's the 1st one I reach for, gets more play than the others. The others really are the same as they were unboxed pretty much. The cheapest & ugliest (2005 Squier Bullet) needed work and it's close to what the others are as either brand new or rarely => never used preowned.

A couple of great takeaways here: 1. If you are going to build a guitar from parts, either really pick specific parts you like or just consider it a fun building project, because if you want a playable guitar it's better to just buy a cheap guitar nowadays. 2. Depending on what you like and need, a $800 guitar might be better than a $1100 guitar (but you need to know what you are looking for).

I'm at sound /pick up comparison; I'm not saying it's my favorite for sound, but the Xavier had the best, just in terms of complexity. Much more 3D sound stage than any others. And it had a mid range, the Fender and the PRS had jangley highs floating on bass, but nothing in between. Parts sounded more balanced....?... Wow, Ryans take is opposite. Being in the room vs hearing the recording are 2 different things.

  • @MalcolmO
    @MalcolmO 2 роки тому +4

Honest to God, if I could have any of those guitars, I'd take the Xaviere! And it's because of the things that it got a 1 for: modability (but I wouldn't mod it), most Strat-like and Vintage. It sounded more like a Strat than the Strat did! And that's because the Strat pups were different. The HSS is nice; it _does_ sound good. But the Xaviere sounds more like a Strat! PLUS (when it's in stock) I can even get it with a groovy tweed case!
So I'm wondering about the items that it got a 4 for: playability and pleasure factor. It _has_ the rolled edges, which only the $1100 Strat also has. I can't figure out why it got those 4s. I bet I'd rate it higher, were I to handle one.
Finally, as someone who's pleased to see the Surfer's Choice item... I concur about the PRS. It sounded really really good, even though it's a more modern sound. 👍 for all 4 guitars but make mine Xaviere.

Should the weight of the guitar be ‘weighted’ the same. I believe it should be on the subjective side. A lot of people prefer a strat to weigh in the 8-8.5 lbs range.

I prefer the balance & the more "focussed" sound of a heavier Strat.

    • @riffraff1350

I have to say I kinda doubt that people actually prefer heavier guitars -- that's just how 99% of Fenders are because they don't spec lighter wood for their production grade instruments so you end up with an 8.5 lbs monster. On the other, Fender Custom Shops tends to be under 8 lbs. Heck, most of Wildwood's CSs are under 7.5 lbs. Lighter guitars are at a premium.

Unfortunately, you got the math wrong. On objective, the PRS should have been 21 (even after removing the pickup criteria). The Player would have been 14 under subjective if you gave the worst score to the heaviest guitar.
Doesn't really change the results, but math.

Given the Player+ is $300 more than the SS SE, it's not really that legit. A Player doesn't have rolled edges, locking tuners, dressed frets a cheaper bridge and lower QC. It probably doesn't have nearly the same score.

I think your calculation is not complete. If you also include the price in the calculation (1 point for the cheapest and 4 points for the most expensive) and the weight (1 point for the lightest and 4 points for the heaviest) the result looks different... I think the selection of categories also has a big influence on the result... ;) and yes, I ordered the PRS SS SE!
