  • We love exploring new beaches to look for sea shells and shelling so we took a trip down to Tigertail Beach in Marco Island, Florida. This beach was very different from any of the other beaches we've visited down here due to the lagoon area that is incorporated into the beach. Cute facilities with kayak and SUP rentals available. Definitely a splendid place to spend the day!

    Great finds! I just love scallops! I found my very first flat on Cayo Costa and I was literally jumping up and down with excitement lol
    Thanks for taking us to Tigertail beach. It’s on my bucket list. So many beaches to explore 🙂

      I have to get myself over to Cayo Costa again. I keep seeing that name pop up in comments and in conversations I'm having with others. It's funny because I could be by myself on a deserted island and I would still get excited about finding cool shells. It's addicting!

      SWF Beach Life it’s gorgeous there and secluded. I went with Adventures in Paradise in the Shell Excursion cruise. Really reasonable prices but wish it was an all day trip instead of 3 hours. They are located in the Sanibel marina just before the causeway.

    Omg, how were you able to put that beautiful purple colored hinged Sunray venus back down? 💜 You show amazing restraints in only taking the very best of what you really want to keep! I'm sure I'd be much better at that if I lived closer to a ⛱️ beach. But then again no, I take broken shells on purpose for crafts . Please dont ever stop what your doing, I look so forward to all your videos. Thanks again and again!!!

    OK, the mystery shell at 7 min. has got me too. My guess (after looking over and over at the book and your shell) is it's either some kind of clam (lightning venus?) or dosinia. The back looks like dosinia, but I've never seen one with that coloring. The scallops are awesome down your way - just made a trip to Sanibel a couple of weeks ago to collect pink and purple scallops that I don't have up my way in the Tampa area. However, we also have quite a few turtle nests on Honeymoon Island (where I shell) and they all have the wire cages on top. A ranger told me that is to protect from raccoons here! They can get into a nest within hours and destroy/eat the eggs. One day a ranger was "cleaning up" a nest and placing the cage and said the turtle had just laid her eggs the night before and 1/3 were already gone from raccoons during the night. Their prints are all over the island... And, I've emailed Jose, the curator at the Sanibel shell museum, and he's helped me with ID. The museum actually has a pretty handy website for ID as well. I didn't look at it today, but it might help with the mystery shell...

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 роки тому

      Well this is amazing info! I actually bought the Sanibel Shell app, but haven't found it to be very helpful. I wish the app had all the shells they have on their website! Yes, the turtle nests are all different and protected accordingly depending on the critters that are around. In Sanibel the nests are protected against coyotes but on Fort Myers Beach there are no coverings. Go figure. I'll have to keep a little pile of shells that I haven't been able to ID and take them over to the Sanibel Shell Museum. I took a trip there last week - love that place! What kind of shells do you find up in Tampa? I want to do some road trips and do some exploring and shelling at other beaches.

      @@SWFBeachLife We have pretty much the same shells you do, but colors might be a little different (like the scallops). There aren't a lot of shells every day, but, like you, after a storm, it can be pretty exciting. I like to go to Honeymoon Island state park because it's not commercialized (Caladesi Island state park isn't either, but a ferry is needed which can be boarded on Honeymoon). There are a couple of high-priced food stands, but otherwise only restrooms with showers. There is a picnic area at the northern end which has a hiking trail you can take; however, I only walk the beach because it'a a 5 mile walk to the end and back and that's enough for me! Also, I look for shells.... There has been a lot of beach erosion over the past couple of years from storms, so it's much easier to walk when it's low tide. You can do it at high tide, but have to hike up in the softer sand... The northern half of the end of Honeymoon has a broader beach area. You guys do a lot of walking, so I'm sure you'd enjoy it!

      Karen Elliott I put the sand dollars in a bucket with a splash of bleach for an hour and let dry. Then make a 1/2 Elmers glue (or white glue) and 1/2 water mixture and paint the mixture all over the sand dollars. It gives them more structure and they won’t break as easily! Happy sealing!

      The topsnails we get down here (Jujube and Sculptures) only get to about 1-inch tall.
