Can someone explain why he is a restricted player. I don’t understand the Japanese baseball system, but would like to know why some players are free like Yamamoto and this guy isn’t. Thank you.
I think it's because of how the rules in the Japan league are structured. Basically, they have to stay a certain amount of years before they become a free agent, like Yamamoto. Roki hasn't hit that minimum amount of time in the Japan league, so he can only get at most a couple million (it's basically a rule MLB and the Japan Baseball league agreed, too). Ohtani did this, too, when he left Japan for the Angels. That's my understanding, at least.
Japanese players with nine years as a professional can become an international free agent - no posting fee required. Yamamoto had seven years in. He did require a posting fee. The Dodgers paid nearly $51M to the Orix Buffaloes just to be able to sign Yamamoto.
Roki is below 25 years old, afaik if you are below 25 from npb you will be subjected to intl signing bonus and at most you will only be paid league minimum. Ohtani was one of the recent players who was subjected to it since he was below 25 when he signed with the angels back then. Yamamoto was 25 when he signed with dodgers so he was not subjected to it and got a massive contract.
Roki hasn't even matched any of the numbers that Yamamoto has put up in Japan. The talent is there but he's a yung un and needs seasons under his belt.
For the Yankees, Soto or no Soto, when Roki becomes available, the Yankees need to go all in for him. Roki, Yoshi, and Ohtani cannot be on the same team. That's just insane to have a three-headed monster in the rotation and one of them is an MVP with the bat. ATL likely isn't in on him either way, so, I don't need to worry about where he goes, as long as it isn't to the Mets. lol It should be interesting to see where he lands, though; been following him for the last 3 or so years on instagram and seeing clips of him pitch. Should be amazing, but maybe see a transition period to MLB.
Honestly I think Sasaki knows he will need surgery soon and he wants to be on a MLB team so they can do the surgery. They’re more familiar with those surgeries
Ohtani, Yamamoto, Sasaski imagine buying tickets to a three game series to see them wow
and youre not in japan. what a great country we live in
Roki is nowhere near as good as Yamamoto - hes still very young and mentally immature not to mention he has Tommy John written all over him.

The Japanese team only gets paid from the international pool money that's restricted.
