Why Savos Aren Is An IDIOT - College of Winterhold Lore

- Savos Aren, the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold, is an idiot. Although he might wear some swanky robes and know a bit of magic, Neloth's assessment of this mage as an imbecile is probably right.

The moment you see a thalmor inside the college you know something is very wrong
lol when i saw him my first thought was spy.
@@tylerhill40 Pfuhah! He wasn't even trying to fit in either! So "spy" isn't exactly the right word to describe him.
Honestly I wish there was a plot twist where Ancano wasn't actually evil but Savos was, serving the dragon priest or something
@@alyjahandujar1402 Yeah, there were a lot of opportunities like that in other questlines as well. If only the main writer wasn't a lazy bastard...*sigh*
wu1ming9shi for real. I love this game but it was so disappointing on what it could've been
The whole "Ancano might be a spy" angle is possibly the daftest thing in this game. Like...he's a Thalmor. Doesn't matter whether or not he's officially a spy or a mere advisor, he will still report to his Thalmor superiors. It's not like he's gonna go back to them and say "sorry boss, can't tell you anything about the college, that would not be right". If there is a Thalmor there, then the Thalmor will know what goes on, spy or not. It shouldn't even be a question whether or not he's a spy.
You know what a *real* spy would do? Blend in. I.e. not actually claim to be a Thalmor but a mere apprentice, then secretly report to the Thalmor. That's spying.
He is more like an idiot spy who ask "What secret weapon are ya using?
"Can i see the schematic, no spying i promise!"
My auto-response, @@MyHentaiGirl, would be simply to flip him off and immediately walk away.
Exactly, plus it's not like there aren't already 2 other Altmer there.
The thing that bugged me most about Skyrim. Get SO many leadership positions from quest lines. Don't actually get to lead any of them.
My PC is so buggy anymore, it pretty much can only surf online. I must invest in a new PC to return to Tamriel. :)
Don't play Oblivion.
@@frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr At least in Oblivion you could actually make leadership decisions for the Fighters Guild. Not really for any others that I can think of, though.
Yeah, It would've been nice to get all the factions (at least the fighting abled) to the final battle with Alduin (maybe add some other dragons for leverage).
Just imagine it:
"The Dragonborn and Alduin, locked into combat, and as Alduin exhales his last breath, a surge of energy starts emanating from him
"BWAH HAH HA, YOU FOOL!!! Did you really think I'll fall so easily? Now the REAL battle begins!!!"
As the last sentence finishes, a thunder (group of dragons) starts blasting away the darkened clouds with the might of their wings. A thunder made from all of Alduin's strongest and most loyal generals
Despair falls into your heart, like an overweighted anchor sinking it's ship, HOW IN OBLIVION I'LL KILL THEM ALL?!!!
"Now now, prepare to die like the lonely roach you are"
Suddenly, you hear behind you a voice...
"Oh, he/she ain't alone"
Your sight shifts to your back, as you see General Tullius/Ulfric/both with an army at his/their backs (seige weapons, soldiers armed to the teeth, healers, ALL of them), and one by one EVERYONE starts arriving (the Dawnguard/Volkihar clan and Serana in Vampire Lord form, with a platoon of armored trolls/gargoyles at their backs, the College teachers and students, the Dark Brotherhood, the Companions in werewolf form, all the Jarls, their and your housecarls, the Blades (let's assume Delphine ain't that much of a bitch for a sec), Paarthurnax, Duhrnehviir, and Odahviing. ALL of Skyrim is here, all the allies you've made are here.
Once the last of them arrive, a chat option appears, you may shout something like "For Tamriel!!!", "Victory or Sovngarde!!!", etc. Everyone shouts back whatever you said.
Both sides charge at each other, in one last stand".

You could argue that the Dragonborn is a genius because of the way he eats spellbooks in order to learn their contents instantly. Total genius, reading is for nerds.
@@Hafer_ Yeah, you've got a point there. Maybe "genius" wasn't the word I was looking for.
The fact, that Dragonborn can replace Virgin Savos as an archmage without the former knowing a single spell, is a testimony to the latter's incompetence and the overall piss-poor state of the college. That and an inability to fix the damn bridge.

"Lets see, you've learned how to deflect the most basic of spells and ventured into some ruins to get some sweet jewelry... Do you want to be the new Arch-mage?"
The guy literally had part of the school fall into the ocean, caused so much destruction to Winterhold that there is a stigma against anyone that has anything to do with the school, and he has no idea what is even going on in his school to the point where students go missing or die literally all the time. Basically it's Hogwarts if Lockhart replaced Dumbledore.
IIRC the college had nothing to do with the great collapse. But the citizens stopped to trust on it after most of Winterhold was destroyed but the College remained untouched (probably because of some ages old ward spells around it).
@@vecna2101 Given the Augur of Dunlainn ending up fusing himself to the College's energies doing SOMETHING that went horribly awry, and all the Reachman totems in the midden, plus Dunnlain being in Eastern High Rock/Western Reach back in Arena (and the Augur's Creation Kit human appearance being modeled after a hagraven)...
Nah, it's probably the Augur's fault, using Reachman magic that's renowned to lash out and hooking it up to what's essentially a magicka battery itself.
I don't trust a dude who looks like a hagraven in Breton man form in his human body, and who ends up latched onto the college's magicka font currents after losing said body, that the whole college won't talk about as if they have something to hide, and who gave Ancano the knowledge to use the Eye of Magnus when he asked.
I thonk Savos was more of a researcher whom had great understanding of the magical disciplines than a battlemage.
This is fine IMO because the college isnt a battlemage academy its a institute that researches the magical disciplines not just for combat use

4:20 I don't know if someone pointed that out already: Mirabelle Ervine states the first time you meet her that the Arch-Mage is very busy so she handles the day to day operations. Also when you get close to her she will tell you to see her if you have problems and don't bother the Arch-mage. So yeah, Mirabelle actually runs the College while Aren fights with his social anxiety in his Quarters.
I think he may be fighting with more than just social anxieties, given the Augur of Dunlainn happily gave Ancano the answers he asked about the Eye of Magnus, and stalled YOU from getting to Labyrinthian instead of just going "be careful, what I'm about to reveal to you can NOT fall in the wrong hands" and fast-tracking you where you need to go.
Savos' knowledge was wards: what if he was actively containing the Augur of Dunlainn's influence to the single font in the Midden he's confined to? We know that in the Restoration Master spell test, he can physically harm students as part of a "test" for if they're worthy of getting knowledge he gave to Collette already.
This would match the unseen appearance the Augur has in the Creation Kit: he has a unique appearance: a breton male who looks EXACTLY like what you'd expect a Breton on the cusp of turning into a hagraven to look like. I have yet to see a Reachman who isn't malevolent to some level.
He believes that some random adventer is the one to succeed him. Despite the fact that you were there for a week and have none of the qualifications for the job. He also does nothing to fix the damn bridge. It has been 70 years conjure up some hammers and fix the damn bridge!

With Mead. Lots and lots of Mead.
The fact that Savos trapped Morokei from causing further damage is testament to his skill rather than raw power. That feat alone is probably the reason he was chosen to be the successor Archmage by the knowing.
Savos was not a fool in tolerating a Thalmor presence. Him choosing to do so was better than having the College ransacked in the near future rather than the far future. To be fair, he challenged, verbally at least, Ancano and lost knowing full well that Ancano went nuts.
There's very little that shows Savos was an idiot, but more a product of tragedy. This is basically in the same vein as the Empire signing the treaty with the Thalmor; a necessary but unfortunate set of events to maintain balance of domain. Had Savos turned Ancano away its basically assured Ancano would return with a war band which would endanger the mages far more than Ancano's open spying.
He should have pushed Ancano down a well long before the dragonborn turned up. Call it an unfortunate accident and then just play dumb with whoever they send and hide any actual work in another city where people can keep their mouths shut until they assume winterhold is a failed institution.
@@purplefood1 Too bad they're of a Good Alignment rather than an Evil one. Sadly, The College Quest line is about the only quest line in Skyrim that is undeniably Good. @@DarknessXER Good, I'm not the only one, even though malacath isn't my favorite deadra (I will always be a servant to lord mora), you still should never EVER try to trick a deadric lord.
Yes! Yamarz is a very special kind of dumbass.
In my opinion Savos was so disconnect from the world due to the events that had happened in the Labyrynthian. He propably tried to cope with abandoning his friends his entire life, but was propably blaming himself all the time, but he had to keep it secret. Moreover, he surely had to undergo a trauma caused by the expedition and death of his friends. He wasn't an idiot. He was just psychologically battered and had to live with this burden.
What would have been more fitting is if throughout the story he seemed a bit fragmented. We wouldn’t know why but it would be about his friends in labyrinthian. And instead of dying to arcano, he was smart and went with the Dragonborn to Labyrinthian and had interesting dialogue about his two friends and releasing them from Morekai clutches or something, then while fighting morekai (maybe make his fight special also) he gets fatally wounded and dies after you finish fighting him, but he gives off his final words and is finally content, and then you go off to kill Ancano
At this point you may as well just make a video called "Why Skyrim is poorly written"
He should just call his next video "Why Emil Pagliarulo is an idiot".
If you think Skyrim is poorly written you should yeet yourself into the soul cairn because thats a low iq move.
@@ryanrusch3976 Funny that you mention the soul cairn given that it's one of the biggest examples of Bethesda's degrading writing/lore handling. Look up the conversations you can have with the Ideal Masters in Battlespire and then compare it to the lack of anything in Skyrim's depiction.
It's a symptom of the game being directed as a power fantasy where the player character is capable of solving all of the world's problems singlehandedly. incompetent and short-sighted NPCs are basically mandatory.
@@welshlout3400 True. It just would have been more interesting if quests were written with more variety, you know? His head was too much into magic, and not enough into the people he was around.
It's not that Savos was weak, it's more that Neloth is one of the most powerful mages on Tamriel and has extremely high standards
And as for Ancano and Morokei, I wouldn't say Savos was weak for not being able rp defeat the former (a very powerful Thalmor battlemage) or too cowardly for not going back to confront the latter
True, the dragonborn was able to kill both, but the dragonborn has about a quarter of the power of a daedric prince
Specifically, he's stated to be half as powerful as Clavicus Vile when he's missing Barbas and is therefore at half his normal power
Well, I think it's reasonable to think that Savos Aren thought he could take Ancano as all the elf was doing was shooting lighting, a novice level skill, at a magic ball. It's not hard to think that Aren would think this man was a fool and tried to handle him succinctly.
Also, Savos Aren's frosty relations with Winterhold is hardly his fault, Jarl Korir blames the college for the great collapse and refuses to hear any different and threatens any mage trying to attend the college. Kralder, Korir's replacement if you side with the Empire, is very much pro college because of his relations with Savos Aren in which they both discussed that Aren doesn't think the College caused the great collapse who instead thought it was the eruption of Red Mountain.

Make Savos Aren and his friends' expedition the ultimate reason why the Eye of Magnus became active and caused the earthquake. Instead of having Aren die before you leave to get the Staff, Aren simply disappears and Ancano is mucking around with the Eye and mortally wounds Mirabelle and she sends you off to get the Staff with her dying breath. You get back and defeat Ancano only to find the Eye isn't powering down, so Tolfdir and you go looking for answers in Aren's chambers find out about what really happened all those years ago and discover that the reason for Aren abandoning his friends to keep that Dragon Priest trapped was really to keep the Staff and the Eye from interacting and the only way to end the threat permanently is to go down to the secret ruins of the original College of Winterhold which was really that Dragon Priest's base of operations back during the Dragon Wars and find and kill Aren, whose actions unleashed the power of both the Staff and the Eye and whose continued existence keeps both active. But when you fight Aren you discover he's been using the power created by interaction of the Staff and the Eye for decades, draining it into himself, making him extremely powerful, perhaps the one of the strongest wizards in the Empire.
They even have that weird pointless ancient Nordic ruin behind the college to use for it. Kill Aren, come back and the Psijic Order is waiting to remove the Eye to keep it as far away from the Staff as possible so that another disaster can't be triggered.

if Skyrim had more role play freedom then one the first things I would do as an Archmage would be to make the college realize that they are part of Skyrim not a separate entity and vise versa. I would send healers to all major holds since there is a civil war going also we would increase the enchanting services. We could use Transmutation and Alteration to help rebuild homes and destroyed properties. That way the people would gain something out of the collage. Imagine if real-life colleges worked like skyrim's
I look up "Savos Aren" and this is the first result LOL
I personally dont mind him trying to stop Ancano, i thought that was atleast semi-noble to try and stop it before it got even bigger
What DID bug me, is that the ARCHMAGE, the leader of the MAGES
JUST WALKS INTO HIM
NO MAGIC TRYING TO STOP ANCANO
JUST "Oh please stop that? :) (bumps into him immediately getting incinerated)"
I think the reason why he so lackluster in his duties as archmage is because I think he was beyond traumatized with having to sacrifice his friends to contain a dragon priest. I really do think that they actually did have somewhat of a battle, because the dragon priest has a little bit of dialogue asking if he came back to finish the job. So when he became archmage instead of trying to become more powerful he stifled himself, and if that wasn't evidence of his trauma the first lesson you learn when you join is wards, and Neloth did say that he was good with Ward's so I think he was more burdened by the loss of his friends more than anything. Living with the trauma he didn't know how to handle. In fact he did know at some point he would have to go back because you end up with the key to Labyrinthian when he dies. Not to mention it goes up to Ancano with a dagger, I think he was traumatized by his own power. So he may not even be weak he might actually be a lot stronger then we think, he just suppress it because of what he had to do in Labyrinthian. That's personally what I thought anyway.
Simply imagine doing that; having two friends.
I do wonder what sort of powerful spell he had to cast, to sentence two mortals to eternity casting an impressive Ward spell. Sounds like something a daedric prince would do.
Well he DID manage to bind his two friends to forever hold Morokei. Give him points for that
Savos probably covered for himself saying he'd done Shalidor's maze at Labyrinthian.. rather than the debacle the game presents
The sad thing is that it isn't the characters the idiots... is really sad that it is the writers that are the diot ones...
Confronting Ancano directly was not stupide but a necessity. He was a more than immediate threat, no "Hehe I will corrupt his right hand bribe his servant in order to take him down behind his back" nor "I will magicaly trap his room with hidden deadly runes and enchantments" THERE IS NO TIME FOR THAT!!! He is a huge threat right now right in front of you becoming stronger each and every second. What do you want Savos to do, pouring Ancano a poisoned tea while talking to softly him? Sending the player to the Labyrinth was the last resort, that's way they thought about it AFTER Savos sacrifice, because that option was 1 way too dangerous and 2 time consuming.
And yes the Thalmor clearly has leverage to force Ancano into the College, plus the College is neutral remember, for us players we do know the Thalmor is bad, but it's technucally not the shared point of view if the College (talking about the institution in itself, at best its people openly distrust Ancano and the Thalmor (and any other outside institutions actually) at worse they clearly hate him) which is a policy Savos has to follow, plus a no or an expel of Ancano may totally trigger the Thalmor in a way the College is clearly not prepared against.
Telling me why everyone in Skyrim who, i thought was an idiot, is really an idiot is now my favorite series on UA-cam
Im nust confused as to how winterhold allowed ancano in since theyre with the stormcloaks right off the bat
Well, he does have a knack for wards that could prove useful...
If one gains the power of CHIM how powerful would they become exactly powerscaling wise?
Would they become stronger then Sithis and Anui-el and probably Anu and Padomay and be able create any kind of form of existence in just a thought?
Thor's Hammer I mean Vivec cast out a Daedric Prince as if it was nothing.
Thor's Hammer their power is increased 20 times over if someone who had power above normal or a dragon born he could become a godlike being or even a true immortal
Mathew Culver Vivec achieved Chim and still did not want to try and take down Dagoth Ur.
I don’t think CHIM makes you that strong, in terms of power scaling they can effect the ‘dream’ that is the the elder scrolls universe but can’t change the fundamentals (that would require an individual to achieve Amaranth, so that they could create their own ‘dream’ or universe so to speak). Vivec with CHIM was unable to stop Bar-dur completely after all, just hold it in place until his Divinity ran out.
It’s not in exact metaphor but consider the power of CHIM similar to how we as gamers can open the console and add items in or edit a few game features, but can’t necessarily create new game engines or codes from scratch.
I would think he's wary of taking risks since what happened to him in the past.
Maybe the Thalmor spy gave him a perception of authority to project his fears on.
Maybe he was playing it safe after what happened and trying not to piss off Winterhold WHILE not being seen as a threat to the Thalmor, whom I believe he feared.
Getting all your classmates/colleges killed because you urged them to go spelunking with you will do things to a man. I don't know how long that happened before he became arch mage but he's over 100 you say?
They leave stuff open-ended like this so we have to fill in the blanks.
I found his backstory pretty compelling and it made me sympathize with his apathetic attitude...though everything was kind of puzzling or a surprise to him, so I wouldn't necessarily call him bright either.
The one thing I hate from Savos is that he's the one that keeps pushing his friends to go deeper in Labyrinthian even after his friends died one by one and he can't help any of them and run away leaving behind his friends. That alone should be prove enough that he and his friends are not strong enough to venture Labyrinthian but he keep pushing his friend to continue and in the end damned his friend to cast a sealing spell to seal Morokai for eternity and abandoned them.
Well, Savos do not behaves like an idiot imho… he just behave as a men who knows what’s gonna happen and that knows that he can’t prevent what’s gonna happen.
In his youth he met some Psijic. Also he not only knew about the Augur, but he forbid any mention of it. Why? Because he was setting everything to happen as it happened.
Expel Ancano from the College so he comes back with more men to take the Eye by the force? Being nice to the locals, so one of them finds the Augur? Or even more, information about the Eye?
At the end you realize that what he did was what had to be done to prevent a worse situation. Because he knew the DB was the only one who could solve it.
That was the 1 good future among 14 millions
Random guy in Skyrim pours the milk first before putting in the cereal
Avarti: peace was never an option...
and unwise aboundance of courage is called foolhardiness
For that character in question I believe he is going through grief Why he wants to be disconnected from everybody else Locked up in his Room claiming be working on delicate experiments not to be bothered
You can easily see his idiocy and everyone else inside just by crossing that stupid bridge.
Hi Avarti great channel and chat , yeah Savros only thing that would make me sort of sense to me is he is crushed by theguilt of only way to contain , The dragon priest in Labyrinthian is to soul bind surviving friends after failure on mad quest for relics of Shalidor , he obviously was an ambitious Necromage of some sort to soul bind etc way to much ego no wonder their hogwarts quest failed in tragedy when he was a student at winterhold ..
I do like the older Savros though he is still reckless, though kicking out " The Caller and Her Accolytes " the Loony Necrowankas, was a good move imagine what that pyscopath the caller would have done to Winterhold??, had they not been expelled sadly yes The lore isn't built enough around yet again unfortunately .. keep up the interresting vids subscribed ty :).
Neloth is basically the vegeta to the Archmages Raditz..
There's actually a couple answers to these problems. Savos Aren doesn't want to deal with the populace nor deal with a mob of angry Nords, right? That's easy. Savos had the Senior Students of the College construct a magical ward around the College. As in, there's no way to actually get *in* to the College without having another Mage on hand. You'd have to cast light-related spells at two different wells to actually gain access and for that gate to open. The gate doesn't have a simple lock on it. Plus, the College wasn't *entirely* unaffected by the Great Collapse because you can see that some parts of the bridge are missing. Also, in your other video on the College, you mentioned that the College Mages might have something to do with the Great Collapse because of the mystery surrounding the Augur of Dunlain. But you said in that video that the Great Collapse, itself took place about 80 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls 5. And Tolfdir tells us that the whole ordeal with the Augur of Dunlain took place long before his time. Meaning, he wasn't born yet when the Augur of Dunlain had that little accident of his that turns him into the gigantic blue ball of light we see today. And as can be seen in-game, Tolfdir is really old. Tolfdir would have to be something like 21 years old or 30 years old at best for the 122nd year of the 4th Era to have been "before his time". Tolfdir is 90 years old--at best. Maybe he's 100 years old or older because he extended his life via magic (you can never tell with Mages).
"Cast a spell to condemn two friends to a vile existence... didn't go back to release his friends... to sum up, he's quite a nice man." Da fuck???🙉
I had a feeling this was coming, thank you for this!
What i don't get is why they moved the Eye of Magnus into the main hall of the collage which anyone visiting can see, instead of leaving it in the spot it was found, which at that point was made safe from any hostile threats and was hidden from anyone else, the site is literally an already established excavation site that the collage most likely has already been to a few times.
Can you imagine if instead of the few measly magical wisps and then the fight with Ancano, the barrier instead surrounded Saarthal, and rather then just magical wyrms they were magical echoes of the slain nords the night of the snow elf raid, and as we get further in and closer to Ancano and the Eye, the environment starts to warp into a pre-ruins Saarthal and as the very fabric of reality starts to get stressed by the sheer magnitude of residual magicka escaping is too much for the immediate surroundings, it is showing a glimpse of the true incredible power that dwells within the Eye of Magnus and why the sigil say that the mortal races are not ready for the Eye of Magnus to stay if so much damage was caused by just one rogue person, let alone what a group could do with it, say the Thalmor, or any other number of groups that could attempt to use it for their needs.

I forgot about the garden in the arch mages quarters. I’ve been using a mod that changes the layout of the whole college for so long I forgot what it used to look like.
I’ve always thought this tbh
He may be the Arch Mage at the College, but he sure does suck at running his school.
He just sits in his office all day ignoring the staff and students...
Even when a man from the Psijic Order shows up to his room and personally asks for a student who has just enrolled, Savos brushes it off like it's nothing, even tho the man was from an order that hasn't been seen since the First and Second Era.
(Not including the sightings between the 2nd and 3rd era as the sightings were mostly rumors and small encounters)
I love your videos, it's so cool seeing a daily skyrim youtuber. I really like hearing about your opinion. maybe you should cover more obscure lore things, perhaps other elderscrolls games and fallout series...
“Pissing off the entire city of winterhold”
All 8 people are angry at me 🥺 my life is ruined
Even if the jarl wanted to destroy the college, what is he gonna do, deflect fire with his axe?
The bit where Ancano says that the Archmage doesn't take his advice as much as he should has always made me think that there was some tomfuckery going on behind the scenes between those two, but with so much of Skyrim being incomplete due to them pushing the 11/11/11 release date, we'll never know what else there was going on. Or at least, that's what I think the situation is. I'm like 99% sure that the Winterhold questline was cut down for release, but I can't remember where it was I heard that from, so grains of salt at the ready...
Of all my playthoughs, I'd much prefer to be part of the Psijic Order than joining the already-broken Winterhold.
Heck, if not be a part of, perhaps just initiated as part of the Order.
He has a relative that was in Oblivion
