- This is a basic nut splitter and there are many styles and price ranges for every application. This value nut splitter seems to work fine for the few times I have needed it but i'm glad I had it . Cheers

That would be really useful for removing old leaf spring U bolts and other rusted on suspension parts.
I haven't tried it on such but I would give it a go - sure. Many suspension nuts are rusted on so tight only a torch can free them up. Not everyone has a torch . Cheers bud.
STEVE ROB REVIEWS my last 3 shops have acetylene torches, but it's really heavy and hard to move. If this got me out of a bad situation I'd prefer it.
I just get out the cutoff wheel and buzz Ubolts off and replace with new ones. I can’t imagine taking the time to bust off 8 nuts with one of these tools and usually all of them are stuck to some degree.
Never used one or seen one used. Thank you for sharing!
Wow Brian thats interesting. I bet your going to get one now just to try it out eh :)
I only recall the tool splitting instead of the nut. I therefore never purchased any tool like this. Your the first who seems to not have split the tool .
Well you have to buy a real one not a wing wang brand made from old tin cans . LOL
I've seen them around for years but I've never actually used one or seen one used. Good to know they actually work. I'm sure there will come a time when I'll need one!
I seen them at PA same design on sale $8 - worth having one just incase.
Only used one 1 time in my life but I don’t do much of anything. So this is a very good tool and video. Thanks
Thanks bud and yes most wouldn't get much use out of one but in america their under 5 bucks :)
It's been a good 25 years since I last used a nut splitter. I mainly used it to remove nuts from suspension parts & exhaust clamp nuts on my cars that were made in the 60"s & 70's but haven't had to use it on any of my 90's & newer cars (never owned a car made in the 80's). I always cranked it with a socket wrench. For the bolts that had a side that was flush against something I couldn't split it all the way across the nut & had to finish it off with hammer & chisel.
Yes I agree its not well used and you have to have the right spot to use it. Cheers
Nut splitter? Let the spouse jokes begin!!
HAHA
That is the first time that I have seen that. Cool. I bet that would help with shock and sway bar links without using a torch. Good job sir!
Hi buddy glad to see your back from fishing and making vids again. Hey Tim give it a try and hopefully it saves you some time and money . Cheers
That's a good tool to have in the shop. Good review.
Thanks Wally its a backup tool when all else fails .
When I was serving my time as a Mechanical Fitter,I was told to always lube the threads and the tip of the chisel.
It does help
Good tip Kevin 👌
Haven’t used one. I hear nut splitter and I run the other direction! Thanks Buddy!
Well it seem most haven't used one either. It's a must have just to have and most likely never use kinda tool :)
Well I did not even know there was a such a thing ! What a bummer that I didn't get to see the thingie going into the nut action ! Sure is useful thing to have with rusted nuts. 👍👋😀
Well Paivi I bet Ron has a couple hanging around the shop eh :) Great gift at anytime for the guys and gals out there that could some nut splitters. Cheers buddy
I’ve seen the tool but never have used it. Looks like it works pretty good! 😀👍
Terry it seems most have never used one . Well I bet a lot are going to get one for $5 in America it's well worth having. Cheers
I can think of a few times that would have helped me out . Gonna have to pick one up !!! Thanks Steve ..
I don't use it often but its just that one time it does the trick. Cheers
I saw a video a few years ago where the guy was explaining that you really don’t need to go so far as splitting the nut. He said you just have to go half in. That expands the nut enough to back it off. No damage to the bolt or stud. I just ordered an hydraulic one, so I’ll let you know how it works (on a 1.5 inch or 38mm nut).
Yes it's like that on some depending on the size and grade of the nut . I like them in them spots nothing else will work. Cheers
How's it working?
Were waiting.
First thing this morning I get the notice of your new vid and saw the name ... well brother I'm telling you it got my attention!!!LOL!!!
HAHA love it a dual purpose video eh .
Great info and review! Thank you
Thanks David, much appreciated.
Well Steve you got one over on me because I’ve never seen or heard of that tool before. Man oh man does that thing work great!! I will have one of those before to long and that’s for sure!! Thanks for the tip Steve !!
Becky it's a tool not many seem to have or even seen . It's old technology but I like old eh . HAHA
I knew this subject would make us smile...or cringe. Like you, I've been married... I mean have the tool box for decades and have never used it. But it was fun to watch the video.
WOW this is turning into a vid where most of the top techs have never use it before. Am I the only top tech that has. LMAO
Very cool Steve, I need one now. Cheers Dizzy.
Dizz some say they have never seen one or used one so you get one and try it out for yourself because i do think it will come in handy for a handy guy like you. Cheers buddy
I think that's one of those tools that lays in your tool box and is always in the way until that one perfect day that you say hey I got something that will work and you say I'm glad I had that handy. I love that dewalt 1/2 impact great vid Steve !
Thanks Ron exactly and it seems I have a lot of tools that fit in the classification too. LOL
Never seen that before....awesome brother!!!
Thanks Grant well get out there and get yourself a nut buster :)
STEVE ROB REVIEWS she's looking at me right now lmao
I have never used it. Interesting tool
Yes and most only use it very seldom . Seems we collect more tools than use them. LOL
I've seen them before but never seen one used before. Pretty cool idea.
They do work but you won't use it too often . It's a nice to have when all else does not work.
Nice video Steve! Never used one before but I can see some useful places it would come in handy.
Thanks Rick , I haven't used it too often but it's an option . Cheers
I bought one 30 years ago. Used it only once, but it saved me. I split it manually, but could not get on the other side, so I took a hammer and chisel and opened it up at the split and off she came.
Same here not in use many times at all but nice to have. I can see a machinery repair shop fixing agricultural stuff might use it a lot.
Great video thank you
Thanks , much appreciated 👍
Never had to use one. I’ve always just cut them off with a grinder or a reciprocating saw. Would be great for stuck toilet flange bolts. And other hard to reach areas.👍
I can't say it would be my first choice but as a hail mary oh ya :)
I've never used mine with an impact. Rarely used but handy to have 👍
Well there's a vid right there buddy - blockbuster by the views I see . LOL
I have one of these tools that I had not used in 25 years. When I had problems removing bolts from a gas tank support, I fished this tool out and it saved me a lot of work. I could not cut the nut off because of the location, but this deformed the nut enough that the impact gun backed it out.
👍
no problem removing bolts in 25 years? i want your luck
@@kashwalton-tewes4624 Oh I had problems, mostly used the blue flame wrench and swore a lot.
Hello Steve from the land of lreland, very interesting video my friend, well done
Thanks buddy and the Ireland seems to agree with you well. Top of the mornin to ya .
Well there’s a tool I don’t own lol. Never owned one for some reason. Cool vid. Enjoyed it 👍
Hi Paul a tool you dont own eh - not for long . LOL
I've got one of those I've used it a bunch and it seems to work just fine I've never used it with an impact I've only ever used a socket wrench or a regular box end wrench but it does work okay for me. I have had the threads on the boat get boogered-up a little bit from using it but all I did was get out my Taps and dies and it fixed it right up
Yes it can be used without an impact but it can be a challenge with a wrench . I think it works good too. Cheers James
Good tool for when you need it.
For the amount of times I've used it the $5 was a good price :)
Great review! I have looked at those... should have a whole toolbox full of em as many times as I run into such a thing LOL! Guess I didnt really know how well they worked.. was also curious how large a nut you could split (Im sure they make different sizes of the tool). Seems to cut right through it. I have used an air chisel many times, but doesnt seem to work as quick as what you just did. I may have to pick one or 5 of those suckers up!
I have only seen them in two sizes and the largest is for a 1-1/16 nut. The set is $20 canadian at Princess Auto or in America $5 at HF :)
Good video Steve, I have never used one before. And I was wondering if you would damage the bolt threads! If I ever need to split a nut, I will think of you!
Thanks bud , it's a hail marry pass for those situations you really don't care about damaging some threads but just want to remove the nut.
I have never heard of a nut splitter! Even though I'm female, I'm still sitting here crossing my legs ... 😂
HAHA just the name scares people . Well it seems a lot of viewers haven't heard of it either . Cheers Niamh
Never seen one or used one looks handy although you would have to be careful not to damage the bolt when you do use thanks for sharing man
Shane most times you are damaging the bolt and most times if you need to use it the nut and bolt are already a pile of rust anyway. Cheers buddy
Cool.
Thanks bud yes it is......
I had to use my impact on it too. A half inch socket with a breaker bar works too
If you have a enough room
Glad to see some have used one , most have never seen one it seems. Cheers
I had one for years, tried using it a few times with not much success...
I guess it depends on the location of the fastener and if you can use an impact- its a bear doing it with a ratchet.
Well that's a handy dandy little tool there.
It sure is Val and one you won't use too often but nice to have.
Those are not the nut splitters my uncle used..... good seeing you again dad!
Hey buddy glad to see ya . These are 40 year old nut splitters so their a bit greasy eh :)
STEVE ROB REVIEWS you handle them well ;)
NUT SPLITTERS.....never had success Steve....the only thing I managed to do with this tool is to break it and the garbage was a good place for it after it was broken....I find the best way is to weld another nut on top and take an impact to it....works every time.....CHEERS
HAHA yes I do the same if I can without burning everything up :) they are not well used but for unique spots a welder or grinder or cold chisel won't fit . Gator you must have some unique tools in the shop to review . A buddy two doors down was an electrical inspector for his company that makes huge transformers for Quebec and Ontario hydro and he was telling me a digital multi meter is not always the best meter to use , he says an analog meter of years past still do better in some testing . Be a good vid to show where this applies . Takes care buddy.
I like that all these,s years never used one.
Haha Danny join the club , seems a lot of viewers has no clue such a tool existed. Cheers
you need a wrench to hold the tool so it doesn't twist. It usually distorts the nut to break the bond. Great for old bumper bolts
Yes absolutely , one usually figures it out after the first try :)
" Nut Splitter " the words that invoke fear in Men around the World ...!!!!!
LOL yes and for rusted and rounded off nuts too.
Maybe in the right circumstances it would be the tool of choice but lots more options now.
Yes - this is really 50 year old technology at fastener removal from years past . Still works when your out of options . 👍
What if I need to split a nut in a very tight spot where I could only get in a 1/4 inch ratchet and 8 mm socket during installation? I also do not have a small cut off wheel if that would be the second best option.
Well you do need access for pretty much any tool but for small fasteners I just use a good cold chisel and hammer to remove it fast .
@@SteveRobReviews it’s One of the fasteners in the cabinet above my workbench, not much stability if I was to smack it I could do some damage to my cabinet and knock it off the wall. Thank you. I’ll see if I can get a small Dremel with a cutting wheel up in there.
use a small drill and drill a hole in one of the flats on the nut; should release some "grip"
@@donwest5387 thanks
I used a cheap china one. Didn’t cut nut iff but. It did enough that impact wrench would not cut the nut i was working. But it did do enough to take nut off. Just did not cut it thru. Just enough to release some pressure. It was rusted in. That pb blaster unfroze the rust.
Yes sir , some cheap ones are softer than the nut :) glad you finally got the nut off . I like the PB Blaster too 👍
I got one of them and used it only once. It's fubar, if I want to save the bolt I heat up the nut and take it off otherwise I just cut the fastener off and replace it. Mine is at least 40 years old and gathering dust.
Oh and I don't need that tool to bust nuts. Ask GCS.
Will that's about right . Ok sometimes it does come in handy for the unique spots you spend a lot of time on ending up with the same results. It does work but your right you won't use it too often . Cheers buddy.
I rate this tool right there with the Chinese Lisle tool from my ADP vid, well almost there your nut buster didn't break. How's that for breaking balls I mean nuts?
LOL
I do fire escape work so yes but they break easily
I’m good with a chisel and 3 pound hammer but there nice in a tight spot
Yes good example Jason !!!
as long as you're working on a Kenworth
They work great 👍🏻 unfortunately I destroyed mine the other day using an impact on it..
I agree the impact is tough on it. The cost is low , using it on an auto in a vid would do well. 👍👍
Use mostly on square bolts on fire escape
You want the chisel in the middle of the flat side of nut that is thinner… works for sure
Haha, I bought a cheap one years ago and it broke the tool before splitting the nut (probably 5/8 or 3/4"). I'll stick with the torch ;)
LOL ya can't buy a wing wang brand , try a snap-on model maybe .
Way to bust-a-nut Steve!
HAHA thanks buddy much appreciated as i'm an old nut buster from way back eh :)
You can use a chisel to peel it
I'd be curious as to how it does with grade 8 hardware. Not sure if the hardware you were using was grade 5 or non-graded stuff.
I'm thinking grade 8 would break the tool. I used a hydraulic nut splitter at GM on repairs and it went thru anything but it most likely cost a fortune. Not sure what grade the nut was.
STEVE ROB REVIEWS maybe you're not sure, but I know the grade of the man doing the nut splitting. :) 8
It works
I use them in tight spots on fire escape restoration…. Work ok
But all day they break
So it's not possible to reuse the bolt? Looks like it's not possible to prevent the splitter from marring or ruing the threads on the bolt.
Great question, depends on how rusty it is and the grade strength of the bolt. The majority of the time the bolt threads are fine if not a file or thread chaser does great . On many the nuts it just splits before the chisel makes contact with the threads.
Definitely need new bolts after😂
the nut is destroyed, the bolt needn't be with careful use
Use it on fire escape restoration ,all the time , works good in tight spot …. Use a impact gun or Ratchet
Awesome Jason , appreciate the comment 👍
i used to have a nut buster, but i divorced her..... seriously i have one i tried to use once and its been in my box over 20 years easy. when your good with a torch like me,its easier to burn the nut off and run a die over the threads most times
Well that sounds like the way I do it when I can't find the nut buster :)
My husband tried one it cuts through the rusty nut but it still will not come off. Maybe some things are too far gone for it to work on..
Yes if its rusted on there usually just a chisel and hammer knocks it off. Try that. Cheers
Use a hammer and chisel to peel off the nut and pin bar or alignment bar to push bolt through
What about 21mm nut on a trailing arm
👍
they come in different sizes
LOL, I will never have one of those in my toolbox. Just the name of the tool scares the crap out of me.
Hi John hope all is well in La Belle swampsingerland :)
no way thats going to get at a nut on a flat surface like a frame and be able to crank that tool with a regular wrench, socket or impact. kinda has to be sticking out like on an an exhaust clamp
Definitely does not work for every situation but in them spots where it does work is awesome.
Finished with a chisel
Good on fire escapes….. in tight spot you can’t get a hammer and a chisel in
Yes absolutely 👍
Ya! That’s what I call my wife
👍
You ruined the threads...I'm trying to save a specialty bolt....
If you just want the nut off most don't care about the threads. You can do it without any damage if you want.
operator error
Guess y’all never heard of a dye grinder.
Y'all like to use a die grinder next to a leaky fuel tank or any flammable material , yall must have lots of experience and plenty of luck :)
Sparks won’t catch gas or diesel on fire…. Look it up. You need ignition like a spark plug to get a reaction or constant hi heat flame.
If it works for you go for it. 👍
Die grinder? What about at the junkyard?
