*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*
I’ve have a 300a, bought new about 35 years ago. I regreased the gears after 5 years use before I stopped fishing. Started again 30 years later and it still works like new. Best reel I’ve ever owned and a bargain for anyone buying one today. Now, all I need is one of those little service tools. Good video. Thanks!
I have about 15 old Mitchell reels I found at garage sales ouvr the years. I decided to fix a few of them. These reels last forever. Thanks for the video... it taught me a lot. Great !!!
Thank you, Wallace. I have a couple of these (and a half bail) and although I have serviced the insides, I was nervous in trying to attempt the bail service. Using your video, got them back together in the second attempt! Thanks again
Thanks so much for the video. Still fishing at least once a week after 50 years. Have many many rods and reels but love my Garcia Mitchies. Ugly stick and 308 I dare anybody to match a 50 year old reel with this combo. Personally sending mine off to a guy who fixes them every 20 years works for me. YIKES, the exploded view on parts still scares me to death.
Great video. I had this reel sitting for years and didn't know how to fix it. Fixed it in about a minute. The bell line was bent. Great video and thanks again!!!
Thank you very much for putting up the video The 300 has been my go to reel since about 1968 other than zebco 33 the only ones ive ever used. And it was only broke for a hour.
Your video was a great help in my repair. It now works like new. I watched your video several times as my Mitchell was slightly different in how the spring seated. It took me a while to figure out. My model does not have the little hole for the end of the spring as a starting position. I actually started by putting the end of the spring into the reel seat and then, working backwards cork-screwed the cover back in place. It was difficult but worked. In the end, it was a bent bail. Thanks
Thanks for this great video. Have a 300 my Dad gave me and now it has new life. Works great! One of my great memories with him was fishing with this reel. Thanks!
I bought mine for $3 and an antique store and I got the original pole and the original reel in good condition and it works no problems and the Garcia Mitchell 300 made in France what is your anti reverse different from mine a handle on it
I have my great Uncle's 308, and I think I need to replace the bail wire, the notch is so worn, the bail won't stay open fully. This video gives me the confidence to "tackle" it (Dad joke!) Thanks for posting.
I think the Mitchell 300 is up there with the Leica M3 for classic timeless design. Still have my old 300 from early 70's and a match also from the same period. All hand-me-downs from Grandad and Uncles.
i've attempted to replace the bail spring. no luck reel is now in many pieces. i bought this reel in to early 70's and still have the original box it came in. it's been very good to me and i hate to give up on it. i need a referral. on what to do next. thanks bob
Thank you for sharing! I was about to get a new spring, but only had to bend the bail. I did not have to remove the screw either I just looked at it and bent the bail into the shape I though it should be. Snaps back real fast now! When I was a kids I fished with a 300 and now I'm back to these reels for good! Now I'm also discovering the C.A.P 304 to be a great reel as well Cheers!
Great video as always. Ive got some old 300's and 410's . On a couple ofem the bail wires are working fine but seem to hang down when in the resting position . Is it simply a matter of carefully bending them back into their original form ?
Hello friend, I want to congratulate you for your video about the fishing machine. I have had the same machine since 1968. I got it as a gift from my uncle, so now I want to ask you something, you must know more about the fishing machine. How many meters of thread does it collect on the reel, if it is of the following thicknesses of fishing line, for example: from 0.18 mm., 0.20 mm., and 0.23 mm. If you know, I will ask you for an answer, if not, then I will ask one of your fans for this question. You can also point me to a website, where I can read about this question of mine. GREETING
I have a 410 which I purchased new. This reel has always been harder to crank that my 300s. Its not an issue of packed greased. Might be a fit issue. Any ideas, a shim or something?
I have a taiwan made 300a and the bail screws are the same size. It doesn't have the hole for the spring like my old ones. How do you do it. I'm,struggling. It looks like an old one not the newer versions. Thanks
Great video. Very helpful. I have a pre 300 half bale. Can you tell me where I can find a parts diagram for it. I believe I’m missing a coupe shims I need to order. Thanks again.
@darkmossie633 They do wear if not properly maintained like any bearings. The main reason Mitchell reels sell for less is because there are so many for sale and like ABU, some sell for crazy prices as well.
@b26maurader Some of the original Mitchell tools are almost impossible to find but search eBay with key words: "Mitchell, reel, tool" and another using key words: "Mitchell, reel, part" and you may find them there.
The line guide is tungsten carbide, which is incredibly hard. It lasts and lasts, and if it does show wear, I believe you can loosen the attaching screw and just spin the guide into a new position so an unworn portion now carries the line. The tungsten line guide was once considered the sign of a quality reel! The downside is that if monofilament line is pulled rapidly off the spool (against the drag), the line overheats when passing over the line guide, and frays. I love old reels, but the ball-bearing line rollers of today are a big improvement!
Dear mister; (or any other fishing enthousiast reading this) Is there any chance you have a garcia mitchell 206/207 and are willing to review it on camera like you did here or make some pictures? My dad recently picked up fishing again and he wanted to refurb his reels but the bail bumper (part number 82215) broke, probably due to the plastic becoming brittle after so much time... He hasn't been able to find a replacement part because they don't make them anymore and none of the people making replacement parts ship to Belgium. I wanted to surprise him for fathers day by using the 3D Laser cutter or 3D printer facilities at my university to fashion a replacement part but I'm in need of the measurements and there are no clear pictures to be found on the internet... Hopefully waiting Simon
thank for your clip. i have 1 question ,please! i have problem when i open the screw for clean it up. that screw was be stuck. how can i take that screw out for clean it up
I have a Mitchell 310ul the bail works ok problem is the arm that falls into grove to hold it open does not work. can I get new springs for it and where
I have about 6 Mitchell reels....2 300 302 306 308 900....wondering if you service them or know someone who does in new jersey This video was very helpful.....my spring just popped this weekend and I didn't know how to put it back...had these reels since I was 14 years old...........that's 50 years ago and 5 out of six are working fine
@92959921 @92959921 Thank you for your comment. It is easy once you know how. I did this film on the spur of the moment, unscripted, unrehearsed and only one take. I'm a little embarrassed but did the best I could under pressure ;-)

thats really good, but the trouble with old Mitchells is that the bearings wear too easily -abu swedish parts do not -thats why on E-Bay worldwide Mitchells fetch very low price but abu reels hold their value and some sell for crazy prices -thx for good video though

Your video was great. Helped me resolve my bale issues on my deceased Dad's Mitchell 300. Looking forward to using his fishing gear. Thanks again.
This works for 406 also. Thank you sir. You saved me a lot of time. Thank you for doing what you do.

Thanks for posting this video, very useful, these reels are workhorses.
That tool for loosening screws ,. Did anything come with the 300 to fit
Great video, could you tell me please? (and us) what do you call the flat screwdriver device you use, & where can it be obtained?
Just bought a mitchell 300. No serial number on it. Has a v stamped in the foot. Can you give me any information of when this reel was manufactured?
Len and his wife Betty Hartman set many records with those reels and monofilament. Hard to believe. I’m 64.
I hear about 3000, 4000 etc. series reels. Do the Mitchell 300 and 400 series compare?
amazes me who much abuse fishing reels get and how much these old reels can take. thanks.
I have a 410 which I purchased new. This reel has always been harder to crank that my 300s. Its not an issue of packed greased. Might be a fit issue. Any ideas, a shim or something?
Thanks for that - I'm resurrecting my trusty Mitchell 300A (love that reel) and this was usefull info - Cheers!

No line roller. What keeps the line from cutting thru the bail wire.?
dont use braided line especially poor quality

I have a 900 I just went through. The anti reverse still doesn’t keep it from back reeling . Any suggestions?
