It was a 4 year long war and after Alderaan systems started openly declaring for the New Republic. By Endor the Imperial and Alliance navies were on par by number (though the Empire still had the stronger navy). After Endor the Alliance had the bigger navy and Operation Cinder pushed most remaining loyalist systems to surrender. By Jakku The empire had largely shattered into rival warlord factions and this was what was left of the Empire proper.
The ragtag rebel thing stopped being true shortly after Hoth which was the last strategically significant Imperial victory. After Hoth it became a war of attrition which favored the Alliance as more and more systems defected from the Empire.

Hated how Disney made the empire fall so fast. In legends it took 15 years after endor before the imperial remnant sued for peace. The truth is the imperial fleet still could have destroyed the rebels after the destruction of the second Death Star but after they retreated the admirals and generals devolved into warlordism and did more to diminish the empire than the rebellion ever could. That fateful retreat sealed the empires fate. If they were more United as the shadow council in the third season of the mandalorian they could have defeated the rebels lickitty split. But each Moff, Grand Moff, Admiral, Grand Admiral and General wouldn’t accept any authority other than their own and thus the empire caused its own downfall.

This was a very poor plot but it was a pretty awesome story overall.
There’s no way the Republic has that large a fleet so soon after episode VI and the Imperial fleet was massive..
    Thousands of ships.
The issue as to why they couldn’t amass them together in a huge fleet was simply control.
Imagine starting a war with China..
Their military is so focused on controlling their populace that they can’t survive a protracted war with a near peer adversary.
Eventually the people would rise up so that’s what gave the rebellion the edge in the conflict.
That being said, once Palpatine was dead the Moffs would have split up and fight for control and there would be less emphasis on controlling the Empire as a whole but they still would have to be cautious at diverting resources and factions working together would be rare.
    The Empire was huge so
to say this was the entire imperial fleet is definitely not even close to what it would take to control an entire galaxy of hundreds of worlds

@@serronserron1320 Well Disney still insists that all of these battles, strategic knowledges and deployments and military forces from ships to men, weapons to other armaments happened within the span of a year. They make a lot of claims throughout the books and comics - that are most definitely afterthoughts - of incompetence in the Empire to explain why everything was so short and the heroes won. Even the Imperials stationed on Scarif are described in a comic as being lazy and treat their post like a vacation, likely because they know Rogue One seemingly infiltrated the one base in the entire Galaxy that holds *all* of the Empire’s biggest military secrets a little too easily. These claims of incompetence continue to appear before and after the Battle of Jakku to explain why the Empire failed. It’s not only lazy writing, but when you actually read it, it’s written or put down poorly, too.
The reason why I follow Legends’s Imperial Remnants take isn’t just cause it’s better, it’s more realistic. Disney just doesn’t want a long, thorough universe for some reason, though knowing them, I’m sure they’re an easy few to guess.
