    As an owner of this panel for 4 months now my old complaint really is the daily panel refresh maintenance it needs which you can bypass but I’ve noticed the more you do, the next time it takes even longer to finish. Other than that, this is literally the best gaming monitor on the market period. The specs on paper don’t give it justice until you actually experience the monitor. It’s unreal!

      I've been using the refresh maintenance as an indicator to take a break and stretch for 10 minutes. Of course I only play single player games right now so I can pause whenever I like, but I have turned this inconvenience into something positive for myself.

    Some more important information about 10bit 144Hz VS. 8bit 175Hz:
    TLDR:
    Color and gradient performance doesn't change between 8bit and 10bit on this monitor, so use 8bit 175Hz to unlock the full potential of the display.
    Vincent Teoh from "HDTV test" thouroughly tested both modes and the 8bit 175Hz mode didn't show any more banding/posteriziation than the 10bit 144Hz mode. That doesn't mean this is an 8bit only monitor, but that the dithering done by the GPU is enough to emulate 8bit + FRC (or 10bit if you want to call it that), so if you're using 144Hz mode you're limiting the monitor with only one advantage: Less noticeable flicker in games notorious for OLED flicker (which are extremely rare), but that has nothing to do with the bit depth and is only because of the lower refresh rate.

    • @goblinphreak2132
      @goblinphreak2132 2 роки тому +2

      Except Vincent only tested with a Nvidia gpu. Nvidia generally compresses everything from game textures to the actual signal sent to the monitor. Which is why he can't see a difference. It would be keen on people to test the difference between 10bit and 8bit on an AMD gpu because AMD doesn't compress. I myself plan to test this myself but haven't gotten my hands on my monitor yet as it was delayed (like tftcentral and rtings, all waiting).

      It can't be that 8 bit is similar to 10 bit color. The difference is quite noticable. Like 1080p vs 1440p (or a little bit less). Perhaps HDTV tested games with inner 8 bit color space, not true HDR or with AutoHDR function and he didn't that test properly (for example, he could download a compressed image). A true HDR game is different 8 bits vs 10 bits. It's like a movie to watch 8 bits vs 10 bits. It's easily perceived that there is a difference in a gradient (around 1 billion color gradations vs 16.5 millions and not to see that ?!). I can easily see that in movies. By the way, there is a HDTV video where he criticizes this panel 5 Reasons Why You SHOULDN'T Buy The Alienware QD-OLED Monitor.

    • @YavNe
      @YavNe 2 роки тому

      Well, it's not for better gradient but for more colors. Otherwise you're not unlocking the full potential of "QD-OLED." You might as well go with OLED monitors with 240Hz refresh rate. lel. Why FRC? What does FRC have to do with that? How 8bit + FRC is being 10bit? lel. Nah, two advantages. Getting billion colors over 16 millions of colors. lel.

    On the watching movies part, movies that have black bars on the top and bottom will sometimes not be present on an ultrawide and the picture will fill the entire monitor. It’s extremely immersive and awesome.

      It all depends on how the movie is mastered. Some are mastered in true 21:9 and will span the whole monitor. Other movies are mastered with the black bars as part of the movie itself, and they cannot be removed.

    Just to share my experience about the RMA situation: I bought the AW3423DW in China (One of the first regions to launch) on March 15th, and found a dead pixel on the lower portion of the screen. After contacting AW customer service, they said they would RMA the monitor and change a new one free of charge but the warehouse for parts and replacements is out of stock everywhere. And my RMA won't be fulfilled until the mid of June. If the defect was detrimental to my experience they would recommend I return the monitor within the free return period and buy a new one instead. Since there is only one dead pixel and not really noticeable in games I decide to keep the monitor and not deal with the hassle of returning and waiting for the new one to arrive. Definitely the best monitor for PC gaming right now in my opinion.

    The fan noise issue is said to be worse when using g-sync and HDR with high refresh games at the same time. As the fan is there to cool the g-sync module. So using a full white screen mite not show the worse case scenario for the fan issue.

    Nice follow-up. Only input I have is the color difference of QD OLED v LG WOLED.
    In SDR content, the difference is quite small indeed. That said, in HDR there is a much more significant difference, since the brightness of the RGB subpixels is very limited on LG tech, and they use the white sub pixel to boost luminance to achieve a better HDR effect. This has the side effect of diluting/desaturating colors in HDR, so instead of getting brighter, richer color as brightness goes up, you actually get the opposite. This is also why LG OLED is suitable for SDR color grading, but not at all for HDR.
    QD OLED has no issue with this however, and that is one of it's biggest PQ strengths.

    Slight correction here, you said that because it is an ultrawide that it wouldn't be as suited for movies. This is incorrect because cinematic aspect ratio movies (the vast majority as very few actually are presented in 16:9) will fill the 21:9 ultra wide screen and give you that full cinematic experience. On streaming sites some will force you with letterboxes to create a letterboxed 16:9 movie frame, but you you can easily bypass that by using a browser extension like Ultrawideo which allows you to set a keyboard shortcut to flick between scaling ratios when watching such streams.
    However, it is 16:9 content (basically the vast majority of TV shows) where an ultrawide is not suited as well because you get a 16:9 frame with pillarboxes left and right. But because this is an OLED, it doesn't matter as they are pitch black anyway.
    So all in all, an ultrawide OLED is perfectly fine and well suited for movies and even TV shows really.

    • @AceStrife
      @AceStrife 2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the mention of that addon; now I don't have to go hunting a torrent to watch a properly scaled movie because Amazon are idiots. Quality obviously won't be as good as a properly encoded 21:9 movie, but at least I don't have to do something illegal to consume content I legally have access to.
      But yeah, I dunno why it was stated that an ultrawide monitor wouldn't be good for watching movies; most are filmed in (essentially) 21:9 and scale perfectly on an ultrawide and are a much better experience. Running into a 16:9 film is uncommon, but boy do they feel worse (expectations + 24fps judder).
      UA-cam and anime and stuff is pretty much all 16:9 though, and personally I don't find those to be much of a bother.
      However, she did say "4k" specifically, not 16:9, so maybe it was implied that the 4K viewing experience is better on a 4K display because of scaling whackery trying to fit 3840x2160 into 3440x1440, which I definitely have struggled with, and oddly many 4K movies I've seen are in a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of something like 3840x1600 or 4096x1716.
      Either way, an ultrawide monitor is most definitely suited best for watching films; objectively.

    • @RobbieKhan
      @RobbieKhan 2 роки тому +1

      @@AceStrife You could be right about the 4K on 21:9 in general but from my experience 4K scales really really well and there's loads of detail still. I have 3x 34" Ultrawide monitors (LG 34UM95-P which is the world's first 34" ultrawide, Huawei MateView GT and now this Dell QD-OLED) and all of them play 4K movies with excellent detail and motion that looks on par with the 65" LG OLED in the living room.
      Scaling for all intents and purposes is perfectly fine but it may well depend on what player you use to play back that 4K content in full screen. I use MPC-BE with the MPC Video Renderer, so scaling up (for 1080P movies) or down (for 4K movies) has never been a problem really.
      Btw a recent movie that has been filmed/mastered in 16:9 is Nightmare Alley. It comes in HDR and everything, but it is in 16:9, but as we are on Ultrawide, it's easy enough to just maximise to 21:9.
      I guess I have been living and breathing ultrawide ever since they hit the market all those years ago so have been through all the pros and cons and found ways around any issues that stuck by over the years, of which now are basically zero :p
      Glad the extension has helped btw!

    More about the color vs LG OLED: The reason why it looks better than conventional WOLED is not because is has a slightly bigger color GAMUT or slightly more brightness. It's mostly because it has a lot bigger color VOLUME. LG OLEDs cannot accurately display deep colors at a high brightness because they use an additional white subpixel to boost brighness, resulting in color washout when it's used. The QD-OLED panel is not restricted in this manner and can display deep and saturated colors all across the luminance range because it has one dedicated subpixel for each color and doesn't need the brightness boosting subpixel to get this bright.

    I've had the alienware oled since this video was made. I do the maintenance and everything for it. Today i do a burn in test and the panel is absolutely ruined. Nearly half the screen in random spots is solid burn in. I don't even use hdr 1000. So for anyone wondering, oled may not be the way to go. The input lag is also very noticeable.

    A bit of topic: I think, a interesting question is: what do you prefer? One large screen? On large ultrawide screen? Or a dual display setting? I have two 27 inch displays and i think i like this setting more than one large screen for normal tasks like office, browsing or something like that. Sometimes i play on one display and watch a UA-cam on the other.

      It's probably personal preference and can depend on what you do most (gaming, movies, work) and what resolution you prefer and how much desk space you have. A single screen probably suits most applications as there are plenty of tools to divide up the screen for work and some monitors allow for picture-in-picture modes. The problem with 2 monitors is always going to be the gap between them.
      I've never understood why anyone would play games on one screen and watch a movie on another at the same time - they must be very boring games. If I ever needed a website or video to show a walkthrough to help me with the game, I'd open it on a tablet or phone.

    I own this monitor. Main issues: you can see the red/blue pixel fringing on text at times in games. It can be bothersome, but I try to ignore it. Response times vary depending on the game. Dying Light 2 has terrible response time, for example. The image literally blurs when moving the mouse/stick. Other games must be better optimized. If there's a solution for low response times, I'd love to hear it. Yes, HDR Peak 1000 is dimmer than HDR 400 TrueBlack. Not sure which one is preferable in gaming. (No other drawbacks. I don't notice the fan noise. 175 hz FPS is great.) I went from a 4k panel to this and don't really miss the 4k. Is this monitory worth 1300? Just barely.

    Regarding black smear… My LG CX OLED does have some black smear, but it’s almost never noticeable. One time I noticed it was while playing Minecraft, digging a tunnel when there was no torch light, so the whole screen was nearly black. I could see smear between some of the chunky pixels of the block textures. So if this monitor isn’t any worse, I wouldn’t worry about it.
    I also played quite a bit of VR with my OLED HTC Vive. The black smear was much more noticeable in VR.

    hi, I disagree that it'll be worse for watching movies. Most movies are in 21:9, a movie in 4k usually don't have the full 2160p height. In fact, I think ultrawide monitors are perfect for movies. 16:9 content might not scale up as perfectly, but those are getting fewer by each day, with anime and consoles being the main remaining areas, since even streaming content are shot in ultrawide aspect now.

    These monitors 100% experience burn in. Ive had one since launch and although the image quality and form factor are perfect for my mixed use of work and gaming, i can now clearly see horizonal lines from chrome windows in near grey colours, especially noticeable in sky boxes in games such as the resident evil 4 remake. This is despite being super careful to vary use and minimise task bars. I suspect over the next year or so people will start to realise oled is still oled and has an extremely limited life span before burn in occurs.

    I have had two of these monitors for just about a year now. The first had a dead sub-pixel which displayed a very bright red on any light colors. I received a replacement for free from Dell which ALSO had a dead sub-pixel. Dell support has since stopped responding to my support ticket and has not asked for either monitor back.
    My monitor is already showing signs of burn-in after one year of usage. These will absolutely have burn-in typical with OLED's. I work remotely and use this monitor for work, and after work for gaming. There is already burn in from Teams icons, Desktop icons, and Taskbar icons. They are minor and hard to notice, but they are there and continue to get worse over time.
    I can also say that the monitor is frustrating to use. With the auto pixel refresh enabled I was constantly getting messages in the middle of me working or gaming, and it will continue to perform the refresh unless you tell it otherwise. You would think it would just perform these after the monitor has been sleeping for 10-15 minutes, but instead it decides the best time is in the middle of you using it.
    I would often come back to my monitor completely blank because it decided it was time to perform a refresh while I was on lunch. The power LED is brighter than the surface of the sun and pulses constantly while the monitor is sleeping (I literally painted over it with liquid electric tape). Eco-mode is.. bad.. sometimes the monitor refuses to wake up after it sleeps. The fan in the monitor is pretty noisy sometimes when you're displaying bright content. The menu can ONLY be accessed while there is a signal from one of its inputs.
    I would love to run the pixel refresh, and panel refresh more often but it is very annoying if I forget to do it before turning off my computer. I have pretty much given up even using it at this point, but when I was using it on a daily basis it didn't improve the burn-in whatsoever.
    Just all around a bad experience, I will never buy Alienware/Dell again. I would not recommend this monitor, but I think I would pin the blame on Dell not the actual QDOLED Panel.

    I've purchased both Samsung's 32-inch Neo G8 and Alienware's QD-OLED 34-inch widescreen. Alienware's 34-inch QD-OLED really isn't 4k. It's a 2k widescreen (3440 x 1440) monitor. Samsung's 32-inch Neo G8 is true 4k (3840 x 2160). I've purchased Alienware for widescreen FPS games, Samsung for regular usage, and some FPS games. I don't want to beat up the Alienware monitor, and Samsung will update their software over time.
    I think the two together will be an extremely nice pair of monitors. 😁

    • @evocybernation8839
      @evocybernation8839 2 роки тому

      @El Cactuar, the resolution of a 2k monitor, is 2048 (Length) x 1440 (Width). Alienware's QD-OLED is 3440 (Width) x 1440 (length). The 1440p is the standard for 2k monitors. Alienware states "34-inches" because they measured from the upper left to the lower right (bezel to bezel), which is 34-inches. The width gives you more room at a 2k resolution (extended 2k monitor). On the desktop, you just get more real estate to place Icons. In video games, the sides of the image is stretched (exaggerated), giving you larger viewing angles. It's supposed to give you this "realistic viewing angle" as if you're looking through your eyes and not the monitor, yet you're still looking through a monitor, which defeats the purpose of realism.

    • @evocybernation8839
      @evocybernation8839 2 роки тому

      @El Cactuar, you have no understanding of what widescreen is... The profile dimensions tell you it's a 2k widescreen. The length is past the regular 2k measurements while maintaining the 2k height, which means it's a "widescreen."
      QD-OLED is how the image is displayed. It goes through two filters instead of one. It combines quantum dot (QD) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. That is not a measurement but how the image is displayed.
      On a side note, and just out of curiosity, I noticed you're using the term "y'all," which is southern country slang, and you call yourself "El Cactuar." Those two things make me think you're from Texas or Arizona. I went to Sheppard AFB and Luke AFB, and I've heard people use y'all as a slang term while serving.

      @evocybernation8839 2 роки тому

      @El Cactuar , you're right about the ultrawide. I'll thumb up your comments. So I'm guessing it's a 2k but an ultrawide 2k monitor? It's still a QD-OLED. I'll have the monitor soon. I'm wondering if games will keep heading towards ultrawide screens? It would be nice, given that gamers are moving towards ultrawide screens.
