    49:30 - from my perspective what was missing last year was a whole month off after St George. By May 2022 you’d done effectively 15 months with little more than super short, ‘mid season’ type breaks (and you’d done 6 IM in the back half of that block). You needed to completely reboot the system.

    22 minutes - I am so glad to see Lionel sticking with his swim coach at least. i love that session; it resembles my ‘go to’ workout that Ive used for years (except I swim 200M with flippers in between 500M threshold efforts instead of sitting around for 90 seconds [but I don’t do lactate or Hr testing between sets, so there is that]). Lionel doesn’t have a fitness or strength impediment with swimming - it purely bio mechanical, and this coach understands ‘feel’ for the water - and teaching it to adults.

    • @andrewmetcalfe9898
      @andrewmetcalfe9898 Рік тому

      23:21 - righto, straight away: if Lionel can swim 1:13 pace in the pool for his 500m threshold reps, there is no reason - zip, zero, zilch - for him to not be able to swim with the Detlev group this season. Which is what he rightly remarked after Kona is what is required for him to contend for the big titles (same goes for Skipper, Wurf, Chavalier as well).

    Time passes and the more and more videos of Lionel I watch the more I get amazed or annoyed by some things that never change: first, one of the things that never change is how he is always rethinking his approch to training, preparation, and methods. At one point, consistency over time his key -and that does not mean one but many years. Also, it is fascinating to see a guy ready to make whatever it takes to succeed (like living where he has access to what he needs to train), but who keeps preparing himself for open-water swim by running in the pool, getting ready for TT on roads by biking on a trainer -oh, well, ok: now on rollers!-, and choosing a track for running intervals when his races will be on pavement ! We all know how good the guy his. But would he not be better prepared if he did at least some (let's say half) of his swim in a river or lake, and some key sessions on the bike outside. ?

    • @gengar678
      @gengar678 Рік тому

      Unfortunately this way there is never a clear correlation between performance and training, since there is too many variety as you say. Every coach knows that you need more than half a season to draw any conclusions about your approach…unfortunately

      @quengmingmeow Рік тому

      I’m a LS fan for life and death, but I couldn’t agree more. Where’s the massive open water sessions over and over again? Are these massive VO2 max sessions actually creating gains and worth the recovery trade offs? What is the real delta between VO2 max run pace and LT pace? Maybe LT pace is where the real gains lie at this point in his career.

      And he keeps changing coach, why? The guys don't have time to settle and he already fires them. I don't understand, but one thing is for sure, we will see one of those videos again blasting everything and blaming himself for the lack of coach

    • @gengar678
      @gengar678 Рік тому +1

      Deep down he is not so determined to win. If he was he would do what would give him best chances to achieve that. Which he obviously is not doing. I think at the base he is more addicted to the fighting, the suffering during the training, the constant battle. Whatever it is, all the other atlethes are not half as interesting to follow.

  • @johngmcdonnell
    @johngmcdonnell Рік тому

    Lionel this is amazing. You are producing Lactate. there's no doubt but you are re-using the lactate as a fuel source as you produce it. This is good. you will not loose because of this. you will benefit from it once you continue to understand lactate usage in the system,

    For competitve draft legal racing I've learned its importation to focus on the swim - Getting out of the water is critical for being in the correct bike pack. 9 time out of 10 there is no movement in the bike packs... if someone was to bridge then almost never do they have a great run preformance. Running is critical. You can almost sort the run splits to determine final placing. Also make sure your T1 is perfect.. That could hold you back from being in the first draft pack on the bikes.
