Awesome. The skin already looks very lively after the first wetblends. I never understand how what you do with your paint on the wet palette and in your brush. If I make a glaze I'll get a big sea of paint. A video about your brush control and how you thin your paint would be great.
Use some kitchen roll to dap your brush to remove excess wash/glaze, before you palce your glaze on the model . That will stop the flooding the model issue you have . And when applying the move in one direction . from light to dark area .
Sam Lenz right on time! I was just looking at this model and scrolling through a Frazetta Pinterest board. The Jedi Master delivers, this is going to be an awesome series.
Its amazing to see it all just come together, seriously talented. I am at a stage where it just looks like a lighter blob on each muscle ! Its good that they now have a theme tune in waiting for any future conan movies or tv shows.
Excellent stuff, thank you so much Sam. I can't wait for the rest of the series. Skin/flesh tones are one of the things I struggle with the most so these will definitely go into the library for future referrencing.
i watched this on the patreon, but watching it again for the 3rd time, i see even more that i didnt in the first two times. you have a hell of an elegance in this shit man. it blows my mind.
Hi Sam, First of all i want so say that i love your videos. They have really taught me a lot, while being really zen - keep at it! I'd really love to see a video on how you work with the paint on the palet. It's easy to see what you do on the model itself. The problem is that my paint just doesnt seem to behave the same way as yours. First of all, you seem to use a lot less paint as if you, by some magical trick, never run dry. Also, it seems like you can mix tiny tiny batches of glazes and washes - how the hell do you do it?
I am just about to start painting another Conan miniature in 1/24 scale, based on the famous "Conan the Adventurer" cover by Frank Frazetta, and this video was exactly what I needed. I am definitely going to use your color scheme and trying to get a similar effect. If it's half as good, I am content.
Hither came Sam Lenz, red-haired, sullen-eyed, brush in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.
Man, your paints are very well taught, they know perfectly where to place them. :) Now for real, I love your videos. I learn a lot watching you paint. "- Home, les teves pintures estan molt ben ensenyades, saben perfectament on col·locar-se. :) Ara de debó, m'encaten els teus videos. Aprenc molt veient-te pintar."
I'm trying to implement some of this on a small 32mm scale barbarian... so I hope you get the chance at some point to show us part 2... or 3... heard about your troubles on the murder basement podcast! Hang in there man!
Conan : The riddle... of steel. Not very nice Conan Villain: "Yes! You know what it is, don't you boy? Shall I tell you? It's the least I can do. Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger! Look around you. There, on the rocks; a beautiful girl. Come to me, my child..."
@@vonfalckenstein9266 cool story...a better way to look at it is it's John Milius' Conan The Barbarian. It's a damn good film. I have the complete written works of Robert E Howard's Conan and they are my favourite books. However, I appreciate most, if not all, versions of Conan. The Marvel comics, the Dark Horse Comics, the video games, the movies, the board games, the pastiche books (some of). Appreciate each for what they are.
Great video as usual. I love how you do the wet blend to set up the lighting on the miniature. I'm intrigued what alchemy you perform to create the glazes. You just seem to put the tip of the brush into the paint and it's magically a glaze. When I do it, I have to mix my paint with medium or water, then wick off the excess liquid so there's hardly anything on my brush. Once I've mixed this glaze it tends to dry up pretty quickly, so I'm really interested it find out what you do.
I've just finished up a blood bowl Thrud the barbarian purposely with the intention of getting better at skin tones and NMM...the sculpt of the Thrud is shockingly poor, lacking even basic details such as separation between biceps and triceps, but on the plus side I got to play around with trying to add those details in using paint. It was a pain in the ass and I ended up having to use a de-saturated purple for the shadows to help sell the illusion of depth but the end result worked. it's weird how the quality of the sculpt can help dictate the paint scheme, but I think that's the beauty of painting and experimenting, when we step outside of the norm and learn these funny little nuances and how to employ them we grow and that inspires us to take more chances and to think about the way in which we apply colour e.g our eyes recognise blue as further away (hence how old 3d specs work) so I figured it would create more believable shadows on the flat areas, cos of science and all that jazz :)
Hello Catdad, I use a masterson's sta wet pallet, any parchment paper from the grocery store (Reynold's here), and a black piece of sponge cut from a larger sponge. Cheers!
"What is best in life?" Watching Sam Lenz painting a muscly barbarian model.
Nice one 👍
Hello again UA-cam algorithm, this guy is hella underrated, please spread his content like wildfire.
Great skin work, and great signing at the end, loved it.
Haha, thank you!
James Rojas - "underrated" ....Sam Lenz? LOL where have you been dude!!!!! He is a god of miniature work.
It's just jaw droppingly good. What an amazing treat to have pros like Sam make these videos and we have them at just a click.
Thank you, Thomas :)
Sam, love how calm and informative your tutorials are . You're the Bob Ross of miniature painting. Awesome as always
Frazetta of miniature painting I'd say

Bog sunglasses, cool band 😎
Sick video and tutorial ! Even your zenithal priming is on another level 👍 😂

A great video. Learned a lot. Really reminded how figure painting follows the same rules as traditional painting.
That manila road shirt isn't getting enough attention. They made me proud to live in Wichita.
These videos are so inspiring. The way you slowly work in contrast, definition and blends is something I'm really trying to take notes on.
This is perfect timing, I was just about to order a grisled barbarian to paint!
Conan, the librarian! was my favorite.
I'm still waiting for Gandhi II.

Brilliant teaching technique, so relaxed at at a pace even I could take in, have another sub.
Dame awesome video to go with that awesome sculpt ....... I have to find me that sculpt 😃
Thanks man! I need to get back to this project.
Oh man, that mini has been on my wish list for a while but I was too afraid of all that skin. This video is so helpful!

The movie with Arnold doesn't show the "real" Conan. Since I read the stories from Robert E. Howard, the movie doesn't do it for me like it used to.

Great stuff!!! How did the princess turn out?? :)
Brilliant work . What brush are you using here? looks like its synthetic .. been looking for a nice brush like that for some time now
They need to re-cast this mini. Low fantasy perfected.
Now I am even more afraid of painting skin than before ;)
