Sorry I'm necroing this, but I need to point out that what Richard is saying is that Russ's wealth hasn't kept up with inflation, meaning that in real terms he's actually lost money. He then compares that with extremely low-risk savings (basically the equivilent of just leaving your money in the bank and doing nothing), and finds that Russ has underperformed that by even more. So not only has Russ actually lost money, he did so despite the market as a whole gaining ground.

Vegan? Not quite; livestock (beef, pork, chicken) yes, there was a social taboo against that due to Buddhism, but people could still eat meat (assuming it wasn't hit by an anti-consumption edict at the time). But seafood featured prominently during the Edo and earlier periods, and eggs were normalized for consumption during the Edo period as well. So closer to Pescatarian.

Yaki means barbeque and niku means meat, yakiniku culture that had revolved around establishments such as the Edo period restaurant Momonji-ya underwent changes due to the influence of Western European barbeque following the Meiji Restoration, and developed further as a result of exposure to grilled meat dishes from around the world (European steak, North American barbeque, etc.) to become modern Japanese yakiniku.
