For installation the head unit comes with a card to tell you where to plug in alll the wires it comes with. Once you plug them in you plug in the wires from the truck by just matching the sizes and prongs. Thats what I did cause idk anything about wires and stuff. So safe to say its not hard at all
So 9:25 you are controlling the radio. Mine will not recognize any of my steering wheel controls. Did you need to do anything to get the radio to recognize the steering controls?
I still need to finish the video! I've recorded the install, but need to put it all together still. There's a short install video on their Amazon listing now. geni.us/TacomaDisplay
Hi thanks for the vid. I just got this too. One issue I have is that my steering wheel buttons is not working (volume/skips/etc). Any tips for this? Thanks!
Oh dang, that's weird your steering wheel buttons aren't working. Did you get that figured out ever? There are a lot of wire connectors in the back. Its possible that you missed one or it needs to be re-seated? My backup camera didn't work at first cause I had it plugged in wrong. I'd open it up again and test a few things before putting it all back together. My radio did clip into the old spots for mounting yes and it's stayed in place fine during off roading. What year is your taco?
@@chadwinoutsideI got it working now. I emailed them with pictures and they replied the next day. I didn’t install the canbus box, my controls and JBL amp worked after that. As for the clips, all I had to do was move them from behind the old unit and put it on the new one. Very easy and simple mistake and fix.
You mentioned it did well with the AZ heat but how about constant heat coming from the heater? I wonder if it’ll affect the screen. I don’t have the volume controls on my steering either. Would changing song, volume on the fly possible without going through different screen?
It survived the blistering summer AZ heat, which inside can be up to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. Running the heater in the winter has had zero effect on it. Yes, you can also control the volume with a quick shortcut on the screen. But, it is slower to do of course than just using a volume knob or using the controls on the steering wheel (if you had them)
Sorry, I filmed the install but still need to film the explanation and edit it all together! They have a short install video on their Amazon now. geni.us/TacomaDisplay
My friend gave me his top display for Tundra.I can’t find it no where and it’s look exactly like your but he got it for free and a screen replacement for topdisplay for free.
That's a great question. I'm not sure. Lemme look around through the menus and see If I can find an option for XM. I never used XM with my previous head unit cause I just stream everything through apps now, but I know some people still like it!
instantly recognized the chandler/gilbert area on your map ;) does this have audio RCA outputs for 4 channels and Sub? does this have an easy way to set the gain or volume of the sub? or would it be best to run a knob to quickly adjust output... i was looking at the AuCar, but not sure i like losing the a/c knobs!
lol don't find me....jk! Yep, that's AZ! There are RCA connectors on the back for those that have the JBL sound system or your own custom speakers would work I assume. I haven't dived into all of the audio settings at length, but I imagine you can set the basics like treble, mids and bass output. I'm gonna upload a full install video eventually and it shows all the different connectors in better detail.
i did see 4 channel and one mono channel for sub.. but still cant figure out if the fader for the 4 speakers has a sub level control. oh well, a bass knob to the sub amp will work. just ONE more wire to run HAHAHA@@chadwinoutside
I’ve got the same head unit. And I wouldn’t say move, but since it’s only being held by the pins and not actually secured by bolts like the oem head unit, it creaks a lot and makes creaky noises when on driving on bumpy surfaces.one time i even hit a pothole deep enough and jolted my whole truck to where the top left of the display popped out.
It’s still holding up really great! No issues. I just went off roading with it last week on a camping trip and it definitely shook around more than normal, but I think that’s cause my clips aren’t holding it in super tight. On normal paved roads, it’s perfect and doesn’t move at all.
It doesn't really block the vents though. It appears that way, but because each vent is pointing at the seat occupant, they never need to be pointed inwards towards the screen. I live in AZ, trust me--good AC is vital to survival here haha
Hi I have the same head unit. If you have 600 to spare then I’d go for it for sure. Huge upgrade from the original head unit. Cons are that CarPlay is laggy. Music delays. (While a song is playing and you press pause it keeps playing for like 2-3 seconds and then stops, same with changing songs) idk about the android auto. But the default connection with out android auto or CarPlay plays fine. When driving on bumpy surfaces you can hear it creaking due to not being secured by a harness and only by the pins you switch out. Overall. I’d only buy it if you had money to spend like that. But I do like it a lot.
@@wingwong4304 thanks. Seems like the pros outweigh the cons. I did purchase it and actually on my way to see if Best Buy can install it. Reason being is that they installed my current pioneer and looking at the harness. They’d have to revert my harness back to the original. So idk going to check with them if they can also install this one and send out my pioneer to be inspected.
@@nchacon1984 if you do have the delay/latency/lag when playing music on apple carplay just forget the device on ur Bluetooth on the iPhone and reconnect. Installing and plugging in the wires was easy. Hope you enjoy it man!
Hey! Sorry, just seeing this comment now. The radio has held up well for me! It's been installed for 9 months now and hasn't had any major issues. The biggest quirk is that sometimes it auto connects to wireless Apple CarPlay and other times it just doesn't. Usually reconnecting the wifi or bluetooth will do it (but not always). I haven't experienced any lag though with playing, skipping, pausing songs. That's interesting... @wingwong4304
@@chadwinoutside appreciate the response. Currently having my truck worked on and they’ll be installing this radio as well. Got pictures of it installed and powered up. They’re just buttoning up the backup camera.
Man I’m starting to like this head unit more and more. I’ve seen another member post up this exact one, MykosPro. I’ve got a 2015 and been wanting to upgrade from the stock. From what I could tell this thing is straight up plug and play. 🤙🏽
Yeah, I've actually seen that review as well--he's got a really great 2nd gen build! Yes, the radio was plug and play. I've never switched out a head unit in my life (I'm not great at car stuff but I am learning) and I was able to figure it out with zero instructions. I did have to fiddle around for a bit and just see what connectors fit together, but I did eventually figure it out! So if that's any consolation, anyone can do it!
I’m looking to upgrade mine as well, i like the tesla screen and this one im not sure which one to choose from the tesla screen cost 1k so its more expensive. Also i want to upgrade the audio system but i cannot find something good i don’t want the sound to sound crazy i just want something better then the old ones.
Hhhhmmmmm 🤔. I think I prefer Linkswell's T-style 13". It looks more OEM. This one is better to watch videos because of the landscape. But the linkswell still retains some buttons and mobs (also replaces the HVAC module).
That’s fair! I kept my old Radiohead in the garage just in case this one ever fails or I get sick of it some reason. I’ve been loving it so far though!!
@@chadwinoutside I like to be able to turn the volume up or down in a quick matter using the old school knobs. this new interactive vol up & down is to slow.

I have an Offroam phone mount on both sides. Is there enough clearance behind the screen? Looks a little tight.
