The one thing I got from this video was: thank God I don't care about housing. Also, if the demand is really so big with such a low supply, wouldn't it be better to have a lottery of sorts for the right to buy a plot? Instead of clicking it forever, just click it once to get your name into a drawing and if you win you have let's say a day to buy it, otherwise it just draws another player. Maybe give players a token whenever they lose and each token can be used to enter another draw a second time. This way people who try to get houses more often will have a better chance. Call it the Allagan Tomestone of Real Estate.
My only concern with that is people making a slew of alt accounts just to bet on housing. Adding in a level or active time in game requirement might be a worthwhile addition too.

I've honestly always been shocked that houses aren't account bound and limited to one house per account. That was the original solution that was in all the old games that allowed housing. I think it would solve quite a bit of this issue.
@@annewandering Yeah, that's what it was like in the older games with housing. And then you could add trusted friends to the house so they could access certain containers or even keep the whole thing private.
@@annewandering if they make housing global, you could maybe use ur characters from different realms on them. Housing could just be on a separate server, and to access you would be logged into it. Then an automated system for wards, that creates new ones when needed, removes some when not needed and incentivizes going to older wards to keep server resource upkeep down.
I'll die on this hill that I stand on since Heavensward (even though I own a medium house since basically forever). They should make the "Sea of Clouds" into an instanced housing area where each instance is one floating island with a house/garden/and a airship landing on it. EZ. Done. It's literally the perfect area for it. Maximum Sky Pirate Base/Feel Good Inc. Energy, even though I own a house I'd move to an instanced area like that in a heartbeat!
I had the same idea, actually. Wished they'd do a Ruby Sea version of it, too. It could be such a nice little thing for those of us that care more about the features of the housing than the neighborhood stuff.
I had a medium house. I had a minor heart attack a little over a year ago and couldn't play while I was recovering. I lost the house and everything in it. I don't have the stamina to camp for a house now. I squat at friend's house now and use all his stuff, but I really miss being able to have things the way I like them.
My heart goes out to you. I actually by some blue moon miracle acquired a large house a 2 months ago and dread the day I stop playing and losing it. Safe to say the people who have houses are cursed to keep paying SE.
I know this is old, but for real? You lose all of the furniture in the house if you let the house decay? That seems totally unfair as furniture is so expensive!
@@Natenator77 you can get it back from the housing caretaker but there's a time limit. I don't know if you get everything back as I've never had to do it but that's the system.
Would love it if they eventually put in "Airships" for players to own, in multiple sizes possibly, and you'd be able to do basically the same things as you would with houses with the airships as you would with the houses ;). Basically an improved apartment, also you would be able to move your airship, maybe not for free but at least it wouldn't be stuck to one location.
it's so tricky with this cuz i genuinely love the neighbourhood idea, it's really immersive. A few years back i used to play with my then bf an he had a small house that we shared. Loved him moaning about some garish decorations the neighbours put up and so on. At the same time i had resigned completely away from the idea of ever having my own house because of issues described in all the horror stories. Instanced housing feels very isolating it's like "ok i'm stepping away from the game and going to hang out in my own private lobby by myself". The limit in ffxiv adds to the emotional value of a house in a game and those that have one REALLY wanted it and care and appreciate it more. I like the idea a lot of people are bringing up in the comments about expanding the function of apartments, that way those that really want the prestige of a house plot could still chose to run Housing:Savage and those that simply want the function of a house could get an apartment.
I currently have a medium house: got a small when they added shirogane, and upgraded it to a medium last time they added in new wards. I'd give it up for a fully-functional, larger apartment (they're currently smaller than a single floor in a small house), somewhere between a small/medium in size. Something like the floor size of a medium, but only 2 floors instead of 3? I mostly wanted all the benefits that housing offers, such as gardening, and a "just for me" space that was big enough to be more than just a bedroom. I don't especially care about the community aspect, because I never see my neighbors anyway.

The housing takes you to a seperate instance, there is literally no need for the lack of supply. The more players they have the more housing instances they need to provide, as the more players they have the more subs they have, the more subs they have the more money they have and the more servers they can attain to provide said housing.

Tbh if they increased the apartment size to that of a small house oh and add roofgardens/greenhouse's to the buildings. It'd make them more appealing imo.
It'd be nice if not only expanded the size of apartments, but also added a balcony area for outdoor furniture/gardenings. That way, those who can't get a house aren't missing out on any features that houses have.
@@Hieuroic Definitely need Apartments that are multi-room, or add in Town-Homes with the same logic as Apartments are now; they can be between small and medium in size, but still have plenty functionality.
Honestly, they already have an instanced housing system in the form of apartments. An easy solution would simply be to add apartments corresponding to the existing housing sizes (preferably upgradable) and add a door leading to an appropriately sized outdoor area for outdoor decorations and gardens. It's not a perfect solution, but it's one of the easiest ones I can think of. Of course, if people would want the full set of outdoor decorations available, they would have to add ESO styled instanced plots. I'm honestly surprised that Square hasn't simply extended apartments beyond what they are now.
They should add 'cottages' that are instanced houses that is found in the middle of fielded areas, basically instead of a 'instanced' map with map plots you can own a cottage which is instanced rooms in the field of your choice, meaning no need to be in the 3 factions.
I think their data architecture doesn't support the amount of data that would entail. Tons of the current issues that FF14 had WoW & GW2 doesn't is due to the infrastructure of the database
Dark Age of Camelot was the first to implement a great instance housing system. When plots filled up in one instance, boom, another opened until that was filled and so on. If FFXIV can do instance dungeons, instance housing is entirely possible. There would also be no need for auto-demolish nor having to camp. Prices can be stabilized based off of size of house/lot and won't allow for outrageous prices ppl sell their houses.
I think implementing a lottery system would help - everyone interested in the plot casts their ballots and gil and the game awards the house randomly to one of the players who participated. Losers would be refunded their gil. This way there is no need to camp and click constantly. Or perhaps a blind auction system with no visible timer (similar to the Neopets auction system). But I could see this getting out of hand with gil scammers and bots with tons of money.
At the very least, it would make it to where people aren't camping and griefing Placards while people that bot have the higher chance simply because bots are FAR faster than a human can ever hope to be.
Yeah, lottery would be a better system even though it too can be exploited. Because with lottery if it's one better per account AND per system that'll keep people from easily just handing off money to filler FCs. I'm not a big fan of the auction idea because it basically means that every house will have the potential to just go for the Gil cap. There are people out there who legit cap by playing Market (Savage) every hour.

@@Sonic177sChannel The problem though, is there are a lot more people with a decent chunk of cash than without, and there isn't really much else to spend it on. If someone told me "you can try to grab this small house for 3m when they add in a new plot, or you could just straight buy it for 20m" I probably would've just gone with option 2, and paid a huge amount more than it was "worth". It'd essentially mean that instead of farming a housing plot, you'd have to farm gil all day instead, because poor people can't own a house.
i relocated 3 times to get to my dream house. started of with a small plot in goblet. later got a medium in goblet and finally last patch got to move to my fav large plot in lavender. it was a journey, but i will never leave this plot X'D i share it with two really nice friends of mine and we decorate it together. everyone got their own room in the house and we get to enjoy it together now
housing system is just bad, just make it instanced, u pay 15bucks a month for this trash and cant even buy a house, yet its marketed with housing. trash
Best tip I can give people is to buy a less desirable plot first, like a small house in the back of the Goblet, and then relocate to one you like when it opens up
Yeah I actually love exclusivity in MMOs. Some others have become almost 100% accessible to any random Joe and that's just boring, nothing feels special or like any sort of accomplishment. Still, this is not the accomplishment I'll be pursuing :P
I feel like bots are just the nature of it, you can't implement a system like this in a game and expect people to actually sit there clicking away lmao
I feel like an auto add system for adding wards when a ward fills up would be helpful. Set a limit so that the ward has to be full to the cottage. This way it's custom to each world, and when people have enough, no new wards will need to be created. If they need to stop the additions for a while due to server stress, the FFXIV community is probably the most understanding community an MMO developer could hope for.
My now neighbor was camping my old neighbor's house after he demolished it. I was chatting with him and after other people came along I chatted with them all wishing them all the best on who will be my neighbor. They where all quite alright.
I camped a plot near the release of new wards back in October, went on my Bard to play a few songs while clicking from time to time. Eventually made some friends and had some house parties. The others eventually left / stop deciding to camp and I managed to get the plot . . . a while later.
Watched this the other day and it finally made me attempt housing savage. My story: used a controller to spam the placard faster while other players were around, and when alone I'd leave the cursor hovering over "yes" to resume spamming as soon as someone ran over. In the periods where I was alone I played with my cat for HOURS. I played with her so much she fell asleep, which never happens (always keeping an eye on the screen, ready to run over). After that, I drank vodka for a while, which boosted my morale. Started spamming the placard even when I was alone. 7 hours in total (lucky?), and now the house is mine! It honestly feels like catching a flight to someplace far away. Might take 12 hours to get there but when you do, you feel like a million bucks.
I got my house when Shirogane opened, the thing is my brother gave me like 4MIL gil and told me that he will not make it in time when the patch comes so wont be able to race for the house so he asked me to buy the house for him. I was camping outside a house plot and everything was ok, no one was camping with me and I though it was weird until I realized that probably when the patch comes I will be kicked outside of shirogane, but the question was, where? will it be Kugane or the Doman Enclave? so I switch to BRD for the run boost and started practicing my running to the Plot I picked for my brother, from Kugane and the doman enclave, I had timers, beated some of my records, practiced all night from 6ish pm till 2am and I hoped that was enogh for me to grab that plot, so I went for a quick nap and woke up at 5:40 am, I sit on my chair and waited till 5:59am to start the login proces so I will be ready at 6am to hit enter and log to the game, it went smoothly, no waiting I log in straight to the Doman Enclave and did everything I practiced I run with everything I had, there where a lot of people running with mebut more importantly there was this male miqote running just a few inches behind me until we got to the teleporter, this moment was so intense, I've been playing since ARR and I've never clicked the location I wanted to go so fast in my life, and I don't think I will be able to replicate that ever. So thanks for the SSD my game loaded in less than a sec, ran to the plot and bought it. that moment all my adrenaline went of, I started to feel a bit dizzy and realized that I did it, I bought the house for my brother, never felt so much pressure since a DRG and me clutch killed Twintania back in the day. So 6 players arrived including that male miqote, they all clicked the sign and realized that that was my plot, 3 of them just teleported out of there and the rest just congrats me, they where ps4 players, they didn't stand a chance, I felt kinda bad. so I opened my friend list and my brother was online for some reason, I told him that I got his house and he replied "good! but that house have your name in it so take care of it and don't worry I got my house in Shirogane too" (he got a freaking mansion that cocky bastard) and well there I was with a new plot in shirogane and with like 300k gil in my wallet (no I do not farm gil, I just do it when I see something in the Market I really want, I dont have any crafters, the only thing I had was mining) but I can assure you, I started minning, like everyday, to build that house I took from those poor player and not waste that plot. It turned out great in the end, I love my house and I still have it.
*cries in PS4* That's a good story though, the system itself is bad but you didn't use that as an excuse to do some shady BS like botting or griefing, you practiced and planned and beat people out in an honest race. Good job!

I'm playing in JP server, and actually never knew housing community was so bad out there until I saw this video. Might just be my server being small and unpopulated, but there's even one time I moved house because there's literally no other house in the instance except from mine (which felt rather creepy). I'm currently in shirogane and around a quarter of the area is being populated with friends Never heard about camping for housing plot even from overpopulated servers, so I think there really is a big culture difference between here and there... which kinda explains why they haven't done anything about this problem 🤔
rumor was that the archeage devs, koreans, almost wanted to remove the game from NA when they heard about the griefing. supposedly koreans line up housing so everything fits...but NA players line up hosuing so they can claim as MUCH as possible. big cultural difference.
@@Meowvela I'm in Tonberry and there was a time during ShB when 2 of my neighbors in Mist got demolished. And literally noone occupy it for a whole week. My friends already have their own houses and I didn't feel like advertising the plot publicly. Saw same cases in Shirogane.
The first thing that needs to be done is a massive purge of all the houses owned by one person. I don't care if they got "grandfathered", just get rid of it all. One house per datacenter per service account.

Your example is a very niche and specific situation that i feel is worth sacrificing for the sake of everyone else. I have a house but a lot of my friends don't, a couple of them have quit because of bots and housing hoarders.

Damn my plot wasn't even being camped. I just noticed a plot was empty in the lavender beds, told my friend I was about 1 mil gil off from being able to buy it. They came over, traded me the gil and I bought the house.
My ideas/suggestions: 1 - Double the neighborhood size 2 - One house per account limit 3 - Housing purchase UI at the entrence where you see all open plots and you click BID for one (yes, only one), randomly one of the bidders will get it Im an ESO player that is trying out FF14 and, to be honest, i rather have the neighborhood style of FF14 then the instanced one of ESO (way better then the non-existent one of WOW tho)
For many people (including me), the only hope to get any sort of house is to wait for the Ishgard Restoration to finish. That way you can take advantage of 3 outcomes: 1) Buy a house in Ishgard 2) Buy a house from someone else who relocated to Ishgard and buy the empty plot from the old housing ward. Hey, a house is a house, right? 3) Just shrug and get an apartment. If only housing was available to everyone in a server then there wouldn't be all these issues.
I just hope ppl who alrdy got a house can’t relocate to ishgard and prioritize ppl who don’t own a house first. Kinda don’t like how SE makes relocating easier :/
one of my ff friends recently showed me his house and he casualy mentioned that somebody gave it to him? i asked how and he just said "yeah i was in the right place at the right time. some dude just said 'do you want a house?'" why cant this happen to me??? XD
It took me 6 years just to get a plot of my own if that says anything. There was one time a few years ago, I was sitting on a plot for 5 hours straight and someone just runs up to the placard and relocates to it nonchalantly. While I was waiting for that plot (this was 2-3 hours in), a different player that wasn't the buyer came up to me and threatened me to pay him double the amount the plot was for, or he would relocate to the plot. I pretended to be AFK so he would go away, and he did. I'm glad there's finally a FFXIV UA-cam personality that's bringing this issue to light. I may own a plot now, but my frustration with the housing system remains the same.
Here is what was said about this awhile back: "In short, to get more housing plots into FFXIV, the devs need to expand their data servers, but the process to get more servers installed is going to be slow as a result of COVID-19. “In light of difficulties in improving the data centers,” director Naoki Yoshida says in the announcement, “the development team is doing what it can to further optimize the servers to allow for the addition of as many housing plots as we can by the release of Patch 5.4. I hope that this is true. Because I am saving a bunch of Gil for this.
True story; I camped outside for 8 hours but every person who came by, I told them I’d give them $10 if they walked away. Most said yes, some no, some ignored me. I got it, but ended up spending $270.
My apartment has so muhc furniture in it that I can barely move around. I've clearly outgrow the space, but it's not like one can get a house right now.
After 7 hours camping a plot, from 3am to 10am, I accidentally fell asleep and woke up at 2 with the plot sold only minutes prior. I was so devastated. There was only one more plot in the Goblet left so I went there and found 3 others. I was really disheartened and figured I'd still try and was trying to figure out my day on how I'd have to do dinner with my family, or pass on hanging out with my fiancé in order to not step away to in case the plot opened. Not even 5 minutes into my click-fest, I got a little music cue and felt disbelief at the Land Aquired message since this is my first house. The current system seems soul crushing. I felt so bad for those guys camping there, just thinking about how long I waited previously at the other plot. They were really nice about it though. Only 4 days later a plot in Shirogane opened up and you better believe I was first in line. It was a perfect little area and I just finished building everything for my outside decorations. The interior hasn't been started yet. Now my fiancé and my brother are owners with me on it and we share the living space. It's crazy how mentally controlling it feels to try buying. It was becoming an obsession.
It sounds great on paper. Once it's implemented and the game immediately slows to a crawl and then goes offline is when you realize it's really not that simple.
uff finally i found someone with my opinion. i camping the third night now spamming thoose buttons :/ maybe they make a "buyerlist" for a plot and after 24 hours it will random choose one player who get the plot. that is not so stressful and no one can do a bot about it or have to click 14hours or more to get a house.
@@NoGround94 but then someone can have dozens of bots and increase their change of getting the plot significantly. The only way to truly solve this is instanced housing. I hope SE make the farms from 6.0 have a plot inside it and then ppl could choose to move to the instanced plot. Even me that already have a house would move to the instanced version if it was inside the farm. If the farm will be an instance for each player, I don't see a reason for them to not putting a house in it.
Spent 13 hours camping a plot and finally got my small home a few months back. I really think that the neighborhood feeling you get from housing being instanced by entire wards is the best part of housing, but the limited nature is terrible. I think new wards are the way to go seeing as the reason they were limited is to avoid empty wards when they are almost always at capacity. I just want them to change how you work towards a house, and maybe just maybe relax on how limited housing is
I recommend for the Apartment system that they make larger apartments with a courtyard. It can be big enough to have a bit of landscaping and a garden, but it would not be as large as a real house, so the actual plots are still a premium. It would allow a bit more luxury for the folks who want the stability and safety of the Apartments, without having to go through the nightmare of the actual Plots. The people who want the honor of having these huge YARDS and physical presences in the wards can fight over the plots.
if they had fully functional apartments instead of the current little mini-rooms, I'd probably give up my outdoor housing plot to someone who really wanted it instead.
they could transform apartments into condominiums, so instead of you getting a room, you would get an entire plot. It wouldn't be instanced, but it would greatly increase the number of houses available.
Housing should be offered to players on an active subscription. If the subscription expires they can issue out a month grace and if it isn't renewed they will give back your inside items and the gil back which you spent on the plot. With that, they can add a feature to template/blueprint your existing home so you can quickly frame your plot to its original form when you purchase another plot. Square would be paying for active house which would keep their operational costs down (less hardware scale). Players will get a sandbox to play in when they are playing. A win-win.
Protips (Server transferred 3 times with static on Aether and I've gotten a new home within a week each time); Check every ward, everyday, in all 3 cities when you start playing. When you find a plot go to it's placard, set an alarm for the last 8 hours and come back then. If it did not pop earlier it will usually pop within 4 hours. Use a controller to spam the board if you have one. Many Small plots and even a rare Medium or two open in the downtime between expansions. I imagine this will not be nearly as easy on RP heavy servers but on Gilga, Faerie and Midgard, servers that all have login queues, it worked.
what grinding? just move to another server if you want housing...i dont get it...i got a medium house just had to pay the mopey, and i think i overpaid should have waited more...
The housing system is cancer. I'm so glad I have no investment whatsoever into housing for myself. I have shit ton of houses in BDO because it's all instanced. Hell, even Runescape does housing better. How sad is that?
@@Koitsuba I would be happier with housing not existing at all instead of this gatekept garbage where virtual houses in this game are harder to get than real life homes during a housing crisis. Either everyone should have access to homes or no one should. Isn't it ironic that the devs made the Calamity event because the game sold poorly and there weren't enough players, but they didn't care enough to improve the servers enough to give them all a decent place to live? Apartments suck btw.
Werid. when they first annouced the expansion on the housing. I just logged onto that day. Happened to wake up early and just bought the house that I scoped out the day before. :D There are apartments too. But apartments really should have a balcony that you can go out on. That would be a key selling point for them, they could also have facilities and common areas to do things in. Like an common area workshop where you can gain exp and gil for contributing to expanding and updating the apartment. Like a discount on teleporting to the apartments when you finish the crafting hand in, and that discount is applied to everyone that has an apartment in that area. It's atleast worth looking into the idea
the story at 8:37 is the same for me! except the dude who wanted my plot doesn't haunt my house and his friend that was camping too to scare people off is actually my neighbor. Turned out pretty well for me though. My neighbor is really cool and gave me a bench and a dohn meg archway for my yard :D 10/10 would recommend bouncing around wards and just clicking plots and being cool when it doesn't work out for you. (I am very happy with my plot though. super close to the mb, summoning bell and aetheryte, and also close to the beach in shiro)
Instanced housing would be the least technically limiting since instancing is very easy to do, and not very resource intensive. But the next best option would be simple in my opinion. Limit players to a number of houses based on their subscription. 0 for Free to Play for example. 1 for basic subs. 3 for the higher tier sub. They could even remove the demolition this way. And the several housing zones that they already have is very similar to instances to begin with. It took literally 30 seconds to think of this solution. It's not perfect, but infinitely better than current. Could even give the players that own more than their sub allows, or if their sub drops off the inability to access their housing until they pay it. Or even to rent housing inaccessible to previous owners due to a sub downgrade for a predetermined amount of time up to a limit by spending Gil upfront. And if the sub hasn't been renewed yet, to let the rent be extended. Needs a bit of polishing, but again, infinitely better than encouraging players to sacrifice their personal health and more like this.
"Fortunately", I got my first plot in Lavender beds before the timer even exists and was able to relocate when they added plots to Shirogane. If I may give an advice, target less desirable plots, you'll eventually be able to relocate to a better one later !
That's what I did. I had a very nice S plot by a waterfall in Lav but lost it when I went hiatus. Then I completed housing savage in Shiro and got another S before transferring to beach front S in Mist. Now I'm in a L in Shiro. Relocation is key.

We've seen everything that was talked except for PLAYER RUN FARMS. It's a new feature that was teased and yet no one asks about it or says anything about it. I think there is a logistical reason(s) why they don’t do this, because that’s basically what everyone says/yells 😬. I cannot remember what it is but when I researched this a while ago on my own, I found several SE ppl explaining the reasons why. Essentially it’s akin to overloading the game, but Idk how the program is set up so logically, that doesn’t make sense to me. 😂 I’ve thought of suggesting something like a housing-only expansion. Have ppl literally buy into it & lock it down somehow to limit the amount of housing that players could own. But it’s tricky: if you’re buying into it, you could argue that you’re buying for the privilege of owning as many houses as you want. Plus ppl on limited incomes might feel excluded & give up playing all together. They should limit the wannabe realtors who buy up houses & lord them over other players, lol. Make you buy the house from the game somehow rather than from other players. But Idk how the game/programming logistics work so my suggestions might be completely asinine, lol. I honestly do not know the solution but there definitely needs to be some options out there.

@@haranguemeringue8957 it's only a server load problem if they don't limit housing account wide. If you don't do that, then yes. It would create a load problem when giant FCs or even monstrously wealthy players buy up whole wards. I think some of the other commenters here have it right. With this having been a problem for so many years and Square Enix clearly not prioritising it as a problem beyond some lip service here and there,. The reasoning has to be monetary. If housing is so difficult.to obtain in the game, most players will be very reluctant to lose it and will pay that sub almost indefinitely. There's not really any other good explanation for such a broken system to have been just left broken this long. One can argue they have been prioritising content and that's fair. But housing really is a gameplay feature that they've clearly put alot of work into to make it engaging and rewarding for a certain type of player to put time and effort into customizing and taking care of. Leaving it completely inaccessible to a huge portion of the player base for this long is frankly unacceptable.
Seeing all these horror stories I'm so glad I was able to just randomly walk into the Goblet and purchase ward 1 plot 1 without any hassle o: it's a small house but I wasn't even looking up for a house at that time!
This is why I’m happy to be a wanderer. I already have the inn room for my character to sleep in when I log off so I’m good with not having a house. Wandering adventurer for the win. 😋
I camped a plot yesterday for 10 hours. I began my search for a house Tuesday or Wednesday, skipped a day or two (purchased plot on Friday), and only camped a few hours at each plot, maybe around four or five plots. But I had a good feeling the plot that I bought was going to sell soon after I got arrived at the plot, since it had gone under two devals - little did I know that I would be clicking like mad for hours. I feel so lucky to have gotten my house, because there was a small group of us camping. As happy as I was getting my house, I also felt bad for faces that became familiar to me that I had seen at previous plots. There was one person whose SO had the plot right across my plot, and they were clicking on placards for 20 hours straight. We were at a different placard before someone else relocated there, then we all migrated to the plot that I purchased. I felt so bad, but I told them my plans of moving to Lav when I have enough gil saved up again and there’s a plot that I want, so to keep searching for a plot because I will let them know when I leave my plot so they can just relocate there instantly when I leave.
Yoshida and crew have had 6 years to fix this (housing launched in 2014). If they care at all for the system or the well being of their players, they certainly don't show it.
See that's one thing I like about ESO, you can own homes. You BUY them, but once you do, they're yours. I'll never own a home in FFXIV because I cannot camp. I'm disabled and a couple of my disabilities... would kill me if I'm not careful, if I don't rest when I need to. That could be five minutes after I wake up, or all day. Not only that but taking care of my grandma, when she needs something I need to be able to get it for her, I can't say, "Yeah, but only after I buy this house, give me a day or so, I don't want it to be sold while I'm afk." That's the only thing I never liked about 14. Still don't understand why they did it that way. Edit: So... I actually said that about ESO before it was even brought up. Also, I had a thought, what if you could buy instanced neighborhoods with real money, and then you could open your neighborhood, to friends or randoms [based on applications?], and either charge rent if you... built the house? I have no idea how housing works but as a crafting main, an educated guess is you use building materials that are crafted? Or outright sell the plots if you don't want to build houses.
When they added the latest round of wards I legit bought a set of 4 small size high speed SSDs to run them in RAID0, and installed a copy of FFXIV onto the array just to make *absolute* sure that I would load in faster than other people and be able to click the purchase button before them. if the game were smaller I would have considered doing massive RAM upgrades to run the game off a RAM drive for even faster load time. It certainly worked! Logged in and purchased my home, and I kid you not about 5 seconds after I bought it, another player materialized where I was standing cause they logged out in the same spot hoping to get it.
I feel like this video was perfectly timed. Just now got into the housing system with a small house in the goblet. It's relatively close to a MB and Summoning bell, and it only took 14 hours and an all nighter. No problem. Never doing this ever again in my life. But damn was it worth it.

It's a possessive thing, me I'm happy with my one house on ESO even though I baught 3 more 2 I just use for storage of collectables 1 was given through aquest chain and I use as my personel csstle lol and wish I could sell 2 of them I baught just to have easy access to Oblivion.

In my opinion there is a way to do instance housing while still keeping the house community look, they could make the plots instance to allow more people to own them but put it on a daily or weekly cycle of showing off a random plot owners house for that day or week. This way they make it so everyone can own a house but they also keep that look of a full community of player houses that the current system creates in the housing districts.
Happened to me an hour ago, been camping a plot for six hours, went to the bathroom gone maybe a minute. Only one other person had come by in the last hour, they snagged it while I was away... one minute was all it took :* (
I lost my house to the demo timer. I spent tons of money and time making my perfect little home. But I was in a position where I could only log on maybe once a week and when I got on I was out doing new content, so going to my house didn't occur to me until day 46 or 47. Of course, my plot was purchased immediately by someone that owned several dozen plots already in the neighborhood I was in. I really think there needs to be a one house minimum for both players and FCs. There's just no reason to allow one player to own 30 plots. Just give them the demo refund on all but the most recent lot they purchased or something. Also, I'm all for Mog Station instance housing. I already buy basically every mount and emote anyway. Gimme a house that won't get deleted.
As for improving... maybe when a plot becomes available then there's say six hours where everyone interested signs up. Then the game uses some kind of random number software to pick a winner who then has another 6 hours to accept. Making it a lottery if they can't do instanced housing it fair I guess.
You'd have to add a demerit in the lottery system for accounts who already own a house. That way it's harder to hoard them. It'd actually be interesting cause you could add a bunch of things that increase your chances like achievements and seniority and things that decrease your chances like already owning a house. That way the lottery balances a bit more fairly.
In short, I'm conflicted. I lost my first house (and everything in it) due to a lapsed sub and always regretted it. Recently I sat through the pain and horror of a clicking war to get a new one, and after many days and many many hours into the late night, I was successful. During that time, I very much hated the system and was wishing for better, thinking instanced would be better, like ESO. But now that I have the house it feels like an accomplishment and a privilege that I earned, and that energy of appreciation and relief has been the catalyst towards providing a level of love and care for the décor that may not have existed otherwise. I built everything myself, when possible, and the house quickly became a labor of love due to all the energy put into it. Furthermore, seeing the other player housing creations and people running around the neighborhood adds a level of emersion that I appreciate too much to lose. I feel like the solution is just reducing the random timer to something like 2 hours. This way the maximum amount of time is predictable enough to work into your schedule, and that should still prevent people from flipping the houses.
Instanced housing has my full support. No decay, just restrict it to upgrade cost for different plot sizes and it being themed to 1 district that you relocate to. especially with the surge of new players I think it should be done.
I remember when Shirogane housing became available and I managed to get plot 9 in one of the wards before everything was snatched up. I remember though... That there were people purposefully reporting people for RMT or something to stop people from getting houses. It’s been a long time so I can’t remember all the details but I specifically remember hearing this after I got my house.
Talinthis Yea, I recall at the time people were also having their accounts suspended or something at the time for making false reports like that. I never experienced it myself I don’t think but I recall hearing these things on a discord I was in at the time.
More housing wards. Whenever all houses on the server are taken, a new ward should automatically open at a rate one 1 per day, until there are available houses not being bought
You would have to limit houses to one per account to make this work. But they definitely need to deal with this. And from what I've been reading coming out of squenix, the solution will be yet another bandaid. New wards coming with endwalker. 🙄 Ya those will be gone almost the moment the patch goes live.
I didn't know these were so hard to get... I keep seeing people advertising their guilds and saying stuff like, "We've got housing!" and just assumed that housing was just some expensive end-game bonus. I still want one, but I hope they do something to improve the system by the time I get around to it.
I feel a little bad. I just relocated to a plot because 1 I hate Uldah and 2 the new plot has a freaking waterfall in the backyard. Person that was there was either away to the toilet or asleep… buuuuut I can say housing is a joy and a ultimate battle. Hopefully the have better housing soon though. Everyone should have a place to call their own that’s not a apartment. You know they could always sell plots auction style for a certain amount of time like say an hour or two. They could relieve some of the problems. Sure it would be more expensive, but sleep is important too.
YES! Timed Auctions would be amazing, but better yet make it to where everyone casts the price into a pool and have it randomly selected after a certain time (and refund any difference between the money put in and the price at time of calling the auction)
Also Ultima Online had a deed system. You bought deeds for anything from a single room hut all the way up to castles and keeps and if you could find a decent unobstructed spot of flat land anywhere and I mean ANYWHERE outside of town limits in the wilderness you could place your home there. Wish modern MMO's did housing like that.
Super late to comment but I heard someone give a great idea on the housing issue. Only allow 3 attempts a day to buy a house. Sign on and try to get your house. Halfway through your playtime try again. When you log try one last time. That way no one can Bot or use 3rd party apps and you don't have to stand around all day clicking the placard. No stress, no bad interactions at the placard and it frees up your time to play. The more i think on this idea the more I like it.

As a new player, I'm looking for a house in near future, and since Ishigard it's so far on MSQ and there's a lot of cool stuff there I'm very very excited to get a house in this marvelous place. So 48h straight on a row seems a small price to pay for it.

Also, if the demand is really so big with such a low supply, wouldn't it be better to have a lottery of sorts for the right to buy a plot? Instead of clicking it forever, just click it once to get your name into a drawing and if you win you have let's say a day to buy it, otherwise it just draws another player. Maybe give players a token whenever they lose and each token can be used to enter another draw a second time. This way people who try to get houses more often will have a better chance.

I've honestly always been shocked that houses aren't account bound and limited to one house per account. That was the original solution that was in all the old games that allowed housing. I think it would solve quite a bit of this issue.

@@annewandering if they make housing global, you could maybe use ur characters from different realms on them. Housing could just be on a separate server, and to access you would be logged into it. Then an automated system for wards, that creates new ones when needed, removes some when not needed and incentivizes going to older wards to keep server resource upkeep down.

They should make the "Sea of Clouds" into an instanced housing area where each instance is one floating island with a house/garden/and a airship landing on it. EZ. Done. It's literally the perfect area for it. Maximum Sky Pirate Base/Feel Good Inc. Energy, even though I own a house I'd move to an instanced area like that in a heartbeat!

I had the same idea, actually. Wished they'd do a Ruby Sea version of it, too. It could be such a nice little thing for those of us that care more about the features of the housing than the neighborhood stuff.
I had a medium house. I had a minor heart attack a little over a year ago and couldn't play while I was recovering. I lost the house and everything in it. I don't have the stamina to camp for a house now. I squat at friend's house now and use all his stuff, but I really miss being able to have things the way I like them.
My heart goes out to you. I actually by some blue moon miracle acquired a large house a 2 months ago and dread the day I stop playing and losing it. Safe to say the people who have houses are cursed to keep paying SE.
I know this is old, but for real? You lose all of the furniture in the house if you let the house decay? That seems totally unfair as furniture is so expensive!

I feel limiting people to 1-3 houses per character/account and offering a grace period to sell your excess houses would free up a lot of real estate.
Would love it if they eventually put in "Airships" for players to own, in multiple sizes possibly, and you'd be able to do basically the same things as you would with houses with the airships as you would with the houses ;). Basically an improved apartment, also you would be able to move your airship, maybe not for free but at least it wouldn't be stuck to one location.
it's so tricky with this cuz i genuinely love the neighbourhood idea, it's really immersive. A few years back i used to play with my then bf an he had a small house that we shared. Loved him moaning about some garish decorations the neighbours put up and so on. At the same time i had resigned completely away from the idea of ever having my own house because of issues described in all the horror stories. Instanced housing feels very isolating it's like "ok i'm stepping away from the game and going to hang out in my own private lobby by myself". The limit in ffxiv adds to the emotional value of a house in a game and those that have one REALLY wanted it and care and appreciate it more.
I like the idea a lot of people are bringing up in the comments about expanding the function of apartments, that way those that really want the prestige of a house plot could still chose to run Housing:Savage and those that simply want the function of a house could get an apartment.
I currently have a medium house: got a small when they added shirogane, and upgraded it to a medium last time they added in new wards. I'd give it up for a fully-functional, larger apartment (they're currently smaller than a single floor in a small house), somewhere between a small/medium in size. Something like the floor size of a medium, but only 2 floors instead of 3? I mostly wanted all the benefits that housing offers, such as gardening, and a "just for me" space that was big enough to be more than just a bedroom. I don't especially care about the community aspect, because I never see my neighbors anyway.

The housing takes you to a seperate instance, there is literally no need for the lack of supply. The more players they have the more housing instances they need to provide, as the more players they have the more subs they have, the more subs they have the more money they have and the more servers they can attain to provide said housing.

It'd be nice if not only expanded the size of apartments, but also added a balcony area for outdoor furniture/gardenings. That way, those who can't get a house aren't missing out on any features that houses have.

Honestly, they already have an instanced housing system in the form of apartments. An easy solution would simply be to add apartments corresponding to the existing housing sizes (preferably upgradable) and add a door leading to an appropriately sized outdoor area for outdoor decorations and gardens. It's not a perfect solution, but it's one of the easiest ones I can think of.
Of course, if people would want the full set of outdoor decorations available, they would have to add ESO styled instanced plots.
I'm honestly surprised that Square hasn't simply extended apartments beyond what they are now.
They should add 'cottages' that are instanced houses that is found in the middle of fielded areas, basically instead of a 'instanced' map with map plots you can own a cottage which is instanced rooms in the field of your choice, meaning no need to be in the 3 factions.

I think their data architecture doesn't support the amount of data that would entail. Tons of the current issues that FF14 had WoW & GW2 doesn't is due to the infrastructure of the database
Dark Age of Camelot was the first to implement a great instance housing system. When plots filled up in one instance, boom, another opened until that was filled and so on. If FFXIV can do instance dungeons, instance housing is entirely possible. There would also be no need for auto-demolish nor having to camp. Prices can be stabilized based off of size of house/lot and won't allow for outrageous prices ppl sell their houses.
I think implementing a lottery system would help - everyone interested in the plot casts their ballots and gil and the game awards the house randomly to one of the players who participated. Losers would be refunded their gil. This way there is no need to camp and click constantly.
Or perhaps a blind auction system with no visible timer (similar to the Neopets auction system). But I could see this getting out of hand with gil scammers and bots with tons of money.
At the very least, it would make it to where people aren't camping and griefing Placards while people that bot have the higher chance simply because bots are FAR faster than a human can ever hope to be.
Yeah, lottery would be a better system even though it too can be exploited. Because with lottery if it's one better per account AND per system that'll keep people from easily just handing off money to filler FCs. I'm not a big fan of the auction idea because it basically means that every house will have the potential to just go for the Gil cap. There are people out there who legit cap by playing Market (Savage) every hour.

If someone told me "you can try to grab this small house for 3m when they add in a new plot, or you could just straight buy it for 20m" I probably would've just gone with option 2, and paid a huge amount more than it was "worth". It'd essentially mean that instead of farming a housing plot, you'd have to farm gil all day instead, because poor people can't own a house.
i relocated 3 times to get to my dream house. started of with a small plot in goblet. later got a medium in goblet and finally last patch got to move to my fav large plot in lavender. it was a journey, but i will never leave this plot X'D i share it with two really nice friends of mine and we decorate it together. everyone got their own room in the house and we get to enjoy it together now

I feel like an auto add system for adding wards when a ward fills up would be helpful. Set a limit so that the ward has to be full to the cottage. This way it's custom to each world, and when people have enough, no new wards will need to be created. If they need to stop the additions for a while due to server stress, the FFXIV community is probably the most understanding community an MMO developer could hope for.

My now neighbor was camping my old neighbor's house after he demolished it.
I was chatting with him and after other people came along I chatted with them all wishing them all the best on who will be my neighbor. They where all quite alright.
I camped a plot near the release of new wards back in October, went on my Bard to play a few songs while clicking from time to time. Eventually made some friends and had some house parties. The others eventually left / stop deciding to camp and I managed to get the plot . . . a while later.
Watched this the other day and it finally made me attempt housing savage. My story: used a controller to spam the placard faster while other players were around, and when alone I'd leave the cursor hovering over "yes" to resume spamming as soon as someone ran over. In the periods where I was alone I played with my cat for HOURS. I played with her so much she fell asleep, which never happens (always keeping an eye on the screen, ready to run over). After that, I drank vodka for a while, which boosted my morale. Started spamming the placard even when I was alone. 7 hours in total (lucky?), and now the house is mine! It honestly feels like catching a flight to someplace far away. Might take 12 hours to get there but when you do, you feel like a million bucks.

I got my house when Shirogane opened, the thing is my brother gave me like 4MIL gil and told me that he will not make it in time when the patch comes so wont be able to race for the house so he asked me to buy the house for him. I was camping outside a house plot and everything was ok, no one was camping with me and I though it was weird until I realized that probably when the patch comes I will be kicked outside of shirogane, but the question was, where? will it be Kugane or the Doman Enclave? so I switch to BRD for the run boost and started practicing my running to the Plot I picked for my brother, from Kugane and the doman enclave, I had timers, beated some of my records, practiced all night from 6ish pm till 2am and I hoped that was enogh for me to grab that plot, so I went for a quick nap and woke up at 5:40 am, I sit on my chair and waited till 5:59am to start the login proces so I will be ready at 6am to hit enter and log to the game, it went smoothly, no waiting I log in straight to the Doman Enclave and did everything I practiced I run with everything I had, there where a lot of people running with mebut more importantly there was this male miqote running just a few inches behind me until we got to the teleporter, this moment was so intense, I've been playing since ARR and I've never clicked the location I wanted to go so fast in my life, and I don't think I will be able to replicate that ever. So thanks for the SSD my game loaded in less than a sec, ran to the plot and bought it. that moment all my adrenaline went of, I started to feel a bit dizzy and realized that I did it, I bought the house for my brother, never felt so much pressure since a DRG and me clutch killed Twintania back in the day. So 6 players arrived including that male miqote, they all clicked the sign and realized that that was my plot, 3 of them just teleported out of there and the rest just congrats me, they where ps4 players, they didn't stand a chance, I felt kinda bad. so I opened my friend list and my brother was online for some reason, I told him that I got his house and he replied "good! but that house have your name in it so take care of it and don't worry I got my house in Shirogane too" (he got a freaking mansion that cocky bastard) and well there I was with a new plot in shirogane and with like 300k gil in my wallet (no I do not farm gil, I just do it when I see something in the Market I really want, I dont have any crafters, the only thing I had was mining) but I can assure you, I started minning, like everyday, to build that house I took from those poor player and not waste that plot. It turned out great in the end, I love my house and I still have it.

That's a good story though, the system itself is bad but you didn't use that as an excuse to do some shady BS like botting or griefing, you practiced and planned and beat people out in an honest race. Good job!

I'm playing in JP server, and actually never knew housing community was so bad out there until I saw this video. Might just be my server being small and unpopulated, but there's even one time I moved house because there's literally no other house in the instance except from mine (which felt rather creepy). I'm currently in shirogane and around a quarter of the area is being populated with friends
Never heard about camping for housing plot even from overpopulated servers, so I think there really is a big culture difference between here and there... which kinda explains why they haven't done anything about this problem 🤔

rumor was that the archeage devs, koreans, almost wanted to remove the game from NA when they heard about the griefing. supposedly koreans line up housing so everything fits...but NA players line up hosuing so they can claim as MUCH as possible. big cultural difference.
@@Meowvela I'm in Tonberry and there was a time during ShB when 2 of my neighbors in Mist got demolished. And literally noone occupy it for a whole week. My friends already have their own houses and I didn't feel like advertising the plot publicly. Saw same cases in Shirogane.
The first thing that needs to be done is a massive purge of all the houses owned by one person. I don't care if they got "grandfathered", just get rid of it all. One house per datacenter per service account.

I have a house but a lot of my friends don't, a couple of them have quit because of bots and housing hoarders.

Damn my plot wasn't even being camped. I just noticed a plot was empty in the lavender beds, told my friend I was about 1 mil gil off from being able to buy it. They came over, traded me the gil and I bought the house.
My ideas/suggestions:
1 - Double the neighborhood size
2 - One house per account limit
3 - Housing purchase UI at the entrence where you see all open plots and you click BID for one (yes, only one), randomly one of the bidders will get it
Im an ESO player that is trying out FF14 and, to be honest, i rather have the neighborhood style of FF14 then the instanced one of ESO (way better then the non-existent one of WOW tho)
For many people (including me), the only hope to get any sort of house is to wait for the Ishgard Restoration to finish. That way you can take advantage of 3 outcomes:
1) Buy a house in Ishgard
2) Buy a house from someone else who relocated to Ishgard and buy the empty plot from the old housing ward. Hey, a house is a house, right?
3) Just shrug and get an apartment.
If only housing was available to everyone in a server then there wouldn't be all these issues.

Buy an apartment and fill it with pots, plants, and a stuffed chocobo to pretend you have a yard and stable

It took me 6 years just to get a plot of my own if that says anything. There was one time a few years ago, I was sitting on a plot for 5 hours straight and someone just runs up to the placard and relocates to it nonchalantly.
While I was waiting for that plot (this was 2-3 hours in), a different player that wasn't the buyer came up to me and threatened me to pay him double the amount the plot was for, or he would relocate to the plot. I pretended to be AFK so he would go away, and he did.
I'm glad there's finally a FFXIV UA-cam personality that's bringing this issue to light. I may own a plot now, but my frustration with the housing system remains the same.
Here is what was said about this awhile back: "In short, to get more housing plots into FFXIV, the devs need to expand their data servers, but the process to get more servers installed is going to be slow as a result of COVID-19. “In light of difficulties in improving the data centers,” director Naoki Yoshida says in the announcement, “the development team is doing what it can to further optimize the servers to allow for the addition of as many housing plots as we can by the release of Patch 5.4.
I hope that this is true. Because I am saving a bunch of Gil for this.
As a brand new player, this is worrisome. Everquest 2 has housing down nicely, I'd like that system.
True story; I camped outside for 8 hours but every person who came by, I told them I’d give them $10 if they walked away. Most said yes, some no, some ignored me. I got it, but ended up spending $270.

My apartment has so muhc furniture in it that I can barely move around. I've clearly outgrow the space, but it's not like one can get a house right now.
After 7 hours camping a plot, from 3am to 10am, I accidentally fell asleep and woke up at 2 with the plot sold only minutes prior. I was so devastated. There was only one more plot in the Goblet left so I went there and found 3 others.
I was really disheartened and figured I'd still try and was trying to figure out my day on how I'd have to do dinner with my family, or pass on hanging out with my fiancé in order to not step away to in case the plot opened. Not even 5 minutes into my click-fest, I got a little music cue and felt disbelief at the Land Aquired message since this is my first house. The current system seems soul crushing.
I felt so bad for those guys camping there, just thinking about how long I waited previously at the other plot. They were really nice about it though.
Only 4 days later a plot in Shirogane opened up and you better believe I was first in line. It was a perfect little area and I just finished building everything for my outside decorations. The interior hasn't been started yet. Now my fiancé and my brother are owners with me on it and we share the living space.
It's crazy how mentally controlling it feels to try buying. It was becoming an obsession.
I remember doing that in the past, but in FFXI, for hunting notorious mosters, not houses, once per week, during a few years.
Haha yes! This is just FFXIV's version of camping an NM in FFXI and fighting groups for it.
Housing should be something every player has. Make it instanced, let us enjoy housing.
Ishgard being instances would solve everything. Leave the other housing wards as is but make the new one fully instanced. Solves every issue.

It sounds great on paper. Once it's implemented and the game immediately slows to a crawl and then goes offline is when you realize it's really not that simple.

maybe they make a "buyerlist" for a plot and after 24 hours it will random choose one player who get the plot. that is not so stressful and no one can do a bot about it or have to click 14hours or more to get a house.

@@NoGround94 but then someone can have dozens of bots and increase their change of getting the plot significantly. The only way to truly solve this is instanced housing. I hope SE make the farms from 6.0 have a plot inside it and then ppl could choose to move to the instanced plot. Even me that already have a house would move to the instanced version if it was inside the farm. If the farm will be an instance for each player, I don't see a reason for them to not putting a house in it.

Spent 13 hours camping a plot and finally got my small home a few months back. I really think that the neighborhood feeling you get from housing being instanced by entire wards is the best part of housing, but the limited nature is terrible. I think new wards are the way to go seeing as the reason they were limited is to avoid empty wards when they are almost always at capacity. I just want them to change how you work towards a house, and maybe just maybe relax on how limited housing is
I recommend for the Apartment system that they make larger apartments with a courtyard. It can be big enough to have a bit of landscaping and a garden, but it would not be as large as a real house, so the actual plots are still a premium. It would allow a bit more luxury for the folks who want the stability and safety of the Apartments, without having to go through the nightmare of the actual Plots. The people who want the honor of having these huge YARDS and physical presences in the wards can fight over the plots.
if they had fully functional apartments instead of the current little mini-rooms, I'd probably give up my outdoor housing plot to someone who really wanted it instead.
they could transform apartments into condominiums, so instead of you getting a room, you would get an entire plot. It wouldn't be instanced, but it would greatly increase the number of houses available.
Housing should be offered to players on an active subscription. If the subscription expires they can issue out a month grace and if it isn't renewed they will give back your inside items and the gil back which you spent on the plot. With that, they can add a feature to template/blueprint your existing home so you can quickly frame your plot to its original form when you purchase another plot. Square would be paying for active house which would keep their operational costs down (less hardware scale). Players will get a sandbox to play in when they are playing. A win-win.
Protips (Server transferred 3 times with static on Aether and I've gotten a new home within a week each time);
Check every ward, everyday, in all 3 cities when you start playing.
When you find a plot go to it's placard, set an alarm for the last 8 hours and come back then. If it did not pop earlier it will usually pop within 4 hours.
Use a controller to spam the board if you have one.
Many Small plots and even a rare Medium or two open in the downtime between expansions.
I imagine this will not be nearly as easy on RP heavy servers but on Gilga, Faerie and Midgard, servers that all have login queues, it worked.
What concerns me is this isn't healthy behavior. This system encourages essentially 24 hour grinding.

There are apartments too. But apartments really should have a balcony that you can go out on. That would be a key selling point for them, they could also have facilities and common areas to do things in. Like an common area workshop where you can gain exp and gil for contributing to expanding and updating the apartment. Like a discount on teleporting to the apartments when you finish the crafting hand in, and that discount is applied to everyone that has an apartment in that area. It's atleast worth looking into the idea
the story at 8:37 is the same for me! except the dude who wanted my plot doesn't haunt my house and his friend that was camping too to scare people off is actually my neighbor. Turned out pretty well for me though. My neighbor is really cool and gave me a bench and a dohn meg archway for my yard :D 10/10 would recommend bouncing around wards and just clicking plots and being cool when it doesn't work out for you. (I am very happy with my plot though. super close to the mb, summoning bell and aetheryte, and also close to the beach in shiro)
Instanced housing would be the least technically limiting since instancing is very easy to do, and not very resource intensive.
But the next best option would be simple in my opinion.
Limit players to a number of houses based on their subscription.
0 for Free to Play for example.
1 for basic subs.
3 for the higher tier sub.
They could even remove the demolition this way. And the several housing zones that they already have is very similar to instances to begin with.
It took literally 30 seconds to think of this solution. It's not perfect, but infinitely better than current.
Could even give the players that own more than their sub allows, or if their sub drops off the inability to access their housing until they pay it.
Or even to rent housing inaccessible to previous owners due to a sub downgrade for a predetermined amount of time up to a limit by spending Gil upfront. And if the sub hasn't been renewed yet, to let the rent be extended.
Needs a bit of polishing, but again, infinitely better than encouraging players to sacrifice their personal health and more like this.
"Fortunately", I got my first plot in Lavender beds before the timer even exists and was able to relocate when they added plots to Shirogane. If I may give an advice, target less desirable plots, you'll eventually be able to relocate to a better one later !
The plot could be next to the sewage pipe in the bay, people will camp it.
That's what I did. I had a very nice S plot by a waterfall in Lav but lost it when I went hiatus. Then I completed housing savage in Shiro and got another S before transferring to beach front S in Mist. Now I'm in a L in Shiro. Relocation is key.

I think there is a logistical reason(s) why they don’t do this, because that’s basically what everyone says/yells 😬. I cannot remember what it is but when I researched this a while ago on my own, I found several SE ppl explaining the reasons why. Essentially it’s akin to overloading the game, but Idk how the program is set up so logically, that doesn’t make sense to me. 😂
I’ve thought of suggesting something like a housing-only expansion. Have ppl literally buy into it & lock it down somehow to limit the amount of housing that players could own. But it’s tricky: if you’re buying into it, you could argue that you’re buying for the privilege of owning as many houses as you want. Plus ppl on limited incomes might feel excluded & give up playing all together.
They should limit the wannabe realtors who buy up houses & lord them over other players, lol. Make you buy the house from the game somehow rather than from other players. But Idk how the game/programming logistics work so my suggestions might be completely asinine, lol.

@@haranguemeringue8957 it's only a server load problem if they don't limit housing account wide. If you don't do that, then yes. It would create a load problem when giant FCs or even monstrously wealthy players buy up whole wards. I think some of the other commenters here have it right. With this having been a problem for so many years and Square Enix clearly not prioritising it as a problem beyond some lip service here and there,. The reasoning has to be monetary. If housing is so difficult.to obtain in the game, most players will be very reluctant to lose it and will pay that sub almost indefinitely. There's not really any other good explanation for such a broken system to have been just left broken this long. One can argue they have been prioritising content and that's fair. But housing really is a gameplay feature that they've clearly put alot of work into to make it engaging and rewarding for a certain type of player to put time and effort into customizing and taking care of. Leaving it completely inaccessible to a huge portion of the player base for this long is frankly unacceptable.
Seeing all these horror stories I'm so glad I was able to just randomly walk into the Goblet and purchase ward 1 plot 1 without any hassle o: it's a small house but I wasn't even looking up for a house at that time!
This is why I’m happy to be a wanderer. I already have the inn room for my character to sleep in when I log off so I’m good with not having a house. Wandering adventurer for the win. 😋
I camped a plot yesterday for 10 hours. I began my search for a house Tuesday or Wednesday, skipped a day or two (purchased plot on Friday), and only camped a few hours at each plot, maybe around four or five plots. But I had a good feeling the plot that I bought was going to sell soon after I got arrived at the plot, since it had gone under two devals - little did I know that I would be clicking like mad for hours. I feel so lucky to have gotten my house, because there was a small group of us camping. As happy as I was getting my house, I also felt bad for faces that became familiar to me that I had seen at previous plots. There was one person whose SO had the plot right across my plot, and they were clicking on placards for 20 hours straight. We were at a different placard before someone else relocated there, then we all migrated to the plot that I purchased. I felt so bad, but I told them my plans of moving to Lav when I have enough gil saved up again and there’s a plot that I want, so to keep searching for a plot because I will let them know when I leave my plot so they can just relocate there instantly when I leave.
this sounds like a serious issue, yoshi should really look into coming up with a better system

Yoshida and crew have had 6 years to fix this (housing launched in 2014). If they care at all for the system or the well being of their players, they certainly don't show it.

See that's one thing I like about ESO, you can own homes. You BUY them, but once you do, they're yours.
I'll never own a home in FFXIV because I cannot camp. I'm disabled and a couple of my disabilities... would kill me if I'm not careful, if I don't rest when I need to. That could be five minutes after I wake up, or all day. Not only that but taking care of my grandma, when she needs something I need to be able to get it for her, I can't say, "Yeah, but only after I buy this house, give me a day or so, I don't want it to be sold while I'm afk."
That's the only thing I never liked about 14. Still don't understand why they did it that way.
Edit: So... I actually said that about ESO before it was even brought up.
Also, I had a thought, what if you could buy instanced neighborhoods with real money, and then you could open your neighborhood, to friends or randoms [based on applications?], and either charge rent if you... built the house? I have no idea how housing works but as a crafting main, an educated guess is you use building materials that are crafted? Or outright sell the plots if you don't want to build houses.
When they added the latest round of wards I legit bought a set of 4 small size high speed SSDs to run them in RAID0, and installed a copy of FFXIV onto the array just to make *absolute* sure that I would load in faster than other people and be able to click the purchase button before them. if the game were smaller I would have considered doing massive RAM upgrades to run the game off a RAM drive for even faster load time. It certainly worked! Logged in and purchased my home, and I kid you not about 5 seconds after I bought it, another player materialized where I was standing cause they logged out in the same spot hoping to get it.
I still remember "fondly" my 8 hour, 7 hour, and finally 20 hour sessions to get my first house in xiv. Hah. *cry*
I feel like this video was perfectly timed. Just now got into the housing system with a small house in the goblet. It's relatively close to a MB and Summoning bell, and it only took 14 hours and an all nighter. No problem. Never doing this ever again in my life. But damn was it worth it.

It's a possessive thing, me I'm happy with my one house on ESO even though I baught 3 more 2 I just use for storage of collectables 1 was given through aquest chain and I use as my personel csstle lol and wish I could sell 2 of them I baught just to have easy access to Oblivion.

In my opinion there is a way to do instance housing while still keeping the house community look, they could make the plots instance to allow more people to own them but put it on a daily or weekly cycle of showing off a random plot owners house for that day or week. This way they make it so everyone can own a house but they also keep that look of a full community of player houses that the current system creates in the housing districts.
Happened to me an hour ago, been camping a plot for six hours, went to the bathroom gone maybe a minute. Only one other person had come by in the last hour, they snagged it while I was away... one minute was all it took :* (
I lost my house to the demo timer. I spent tons of money and time making my perfect little home. But I was in a position where I could only log on maybe once a week and when I got on I was out doing new content, so going to my house didn't occur to me until day 46 or 47. Of course, my plot was purchased immediately by someone that owned several dozen plots already in the neighborhood I was in. I really think there needs to be a one house minimum for both players and FCs. There's just no reason to allow one player to own 30 plots. Just give them the demo refund on all but the most recent lot they purchased or something.
Also, I'm all for Mog Station instance housing. I already buy basically every mount and emote anyway. Gimme a house that won't get deleted.
uh housing is limited. unless you have 30 characters then you are limited to one. regardless of that you get emails telling you of the impending demo.

As for improving... maybe when a plot becomes available then there's say six hours where everyone interested signs up. Then the game uses some kind of random number software to pick a winner who then has another 6 hours to accept. Making it a lottery if they can't do instanced housing it fair I guess.
You'd have to add a demerit in the lottery system for accounts who already own a house. That way it's harder to hoard them. It'd actually be interesting cause you could add a bunch of things that increase your chances like achievements and seniority and things that decrease your chances like already owning a house. That way the lottery balances a bit more fairly.
In short, I'm conflicted.
I lost my first house (and everything in it) due to a lapsed sub and always regretted it. Recently I sat through the pain and horror of a clicking war to get a new one, and after many days and many many hours into the late night, I was successful.
During that time, I very much hated the system and was wishing for better, thinking instanced would be better, like ESO. But now that I have the house it feels like an accomplishment and a privilege that I earned, and that energy of appreciation and relief has been the catalyst towards providing a level of love and care for the décor that may not have existed otherwise. I built everything myself, when possible, and the house quickly became a labor of love due to all the energy put into it. Furthermore, seeing the other player housing creations and people running around the neighborhood adds a level of emersion that I appreciate too much to lose.
I feel like the solution is just reducing the random timer to something like 2 hours. This way the maximum amount of time is predictable enough to work into your schedule, and that should still prevent people from flipping the houses.
Instanced housing has my full support. No decay, just restrict it to upgrade cost for different plot sizes and it being themed to 1 district that you relocate to. especially with the surge of new players I think it should be done.
I remember when Shirogane housing became available and I managed to get plot 9 in one of the wards before everything was snatched up.
I remember though... That there were people purposefully reporting people for RMT or something to stop people from getting houses.
It’s been a long time so I can’t remember all the details but I specifically remember hearing this after I got my house.
i know they can be pretty rough with fake reports. if you do that for multiple people falsely you are looking at a punishment against your account.
Talinthis Yea, I recall at the time people were also having their accounts suspended or something at the time for making false reports like that.
I never experienced it myself I don’t think but I recall hearing these things on a discord I was in at the time.

More housing wards. Whenever all houses on the server are taken, a new ward should automatically open at a rate one 1 per day, until there are available houses not being bought

You would have to limit houses to one per account to make this work. But they definitely need to deal with this. And from what I've been reading coming out of squenix, the solution will be yet another bandaid. New wards coming with endwalker. 🙄 Ya those will be gone almost the moment the patch goes live.
I didn't know these were so hard to get... I keep seeing people advertising their guilds and saying stuff like, "We've got housing!" and just assumed that housing was just some expensive end-game bonus. I still want one, but I hope they do something to improve the system by the time I get around to it.
I feel a little bad. I just relocated to a plot because 1 I hate Uldah and 2 the new plot has a freaking waterfall in the backyard. Person that was there was either away to the toilet or asleep… buuuuut I can say housing is a joy and a ultimate battle. Hopefully the have better housing soon though. Everyone should have a place to call their own that’s not a apartment. I remember when housing first came out and planning and discussing with old friends how we were going to fix up our houses and such. Good ole days.
Yeah, when I relocate cause I hate Mist ward, I will feel bad... but you gotta do what you gotta do.
You know they could always sell plots auction style for a certain amount of time like say an hour or two. They could relieve some of the problems. Sure it would be more expensive, but sleep is important too.
YES! Timed Auctions would be amazing, but better yet make it to where everyone casts the price into a pool and have it randomly selected after a certain time (and refund any difference between the money put in and the price at time of calling the auction)

I believe the best option is just making more houses. non-instanced housing is way way cooler than instanced..
perhaps a mix isnt a terrible idea?
Also Ultima Online had a deed system. You bought deeds for anything from a single room hut all the way up to castles and keeps and if you could find a decent unobstructed spot of flat land anywhere and I mean ANYWHERE outside of town limits in the wilderness you could place your home there. Wish modern MMO's did housing like that.
Super late to comment but I heard someone give a great idea on the housing issue. Only allow 3 attempts a day to buy a house. Sign on and try to get your house. Halfway through your playtime try again. When you log try one last time. That way no one can Bot or use 3rd party apps and you don't have to stand around all day clicking the placard. No stress, no bad interactions at the placard and it frees up your time to play. The more i think on this idea the more I like it.
They could easily solve the housing problem and make it where everyone can have a house. They just choose not to.

As a new player, I'm looking for a house in near future, and since Ishigard it's so far on MSQ and there's a lot of cool stuff there I'm very very excited to get a house in this marvelous place. So 48h straight on a row seems a small price to pay for it.
For people who have to exist in the real world, it's a steep price because you shouldn't trade your health for houses in a video game.
I love that it's not instanced, but maybe having a lot more neighborhoods would help, considering the enormous amount of newbies (me included)
