Stack up the first seven: take the third one, place it at the top, switch the next two, then follow the rest chronologically, and you've got my ranking:
    1. The Original Soundtrack
    2. Sheet Music
    3. 10cc
    4. How Dare You!
    5. Deceptive Bends
    6. Bloody Tourists
    7. Look Hear?
Don't own the last few. Love all 7 of these.
You had multi-instrumentalists, singers (all four), producers, engineers, writers for other big names ("Look Through Any Window" by The Hollies is one of the most perfect slices of pop I've ever heard, and Gouldman wrote it...as a teenager, if I remember correctly), and some of the most clever and imaginative wordsmiths. And I didn't even mention the musical arrangements.
    These guys were fookin' BRILLIANT!!!

Damn straight. Sheet Music is an absolute masterpiece of the genre. Played it to death when it came out. "Old Wild Men" and "Somewhere In Hollywood" shine. There is a LIVE version of "Old Wild Men on the tube and it is stunning that they pull it off.

It’s great to see you cover a variety of different styles of music on your channel, Pete. I’m especially pleased to see the fabulous 10cc receive the credit they deserve.
I can’t argue too much with your album rankings - the early recordings with Godley & Creme were definitely their better releases , with Bloody Tourists and Deceptive Bends close behind, and Ten Out Of 10 being the best of the rest.
Sadly, Graham and Eric are no longer on good terms but Graham still tours with a version of the band that includes Rick Fenn and Paul Burgess. I saw them about 2 or 3 years ago, when they performed the whole of Sheet Music and they still put on an excellent show - their performance of Feel The Benefit is still the live highlight, complete with Graham’s bass solo!

So weird...I’m 61 and back in mid 70s I checked out a couple 10cc albums from my local library in St. Louis, How Dare You and and Deceptive Bends. Had never heard anything by them but absolutely loved these albums and always was part of my most loved albums over all these years. Just this past Saturday while out raking leaves, was listening to Steven Wilson and and Tim Bowness awesome podcast, The Album years and these group was mentioned. I thought to myself, Hmm wonder if Pete has done ranking of their albums yet....of course I forgot to check then, but low and behold I fire up YT tonight and here it is...OMG?!?

I had mixed feelings about this album as a kid, but played it to death anyway for a couple years, and then permanently shelved it in favor of harder rock. Today, after listening to it, I think I'm in love with it. I ordered it on CD, and then came here right away to see if you had ranked the albums, because I need help knowing which albums I need to buy first, because up until now, I've only heard two of them in their entirety. Yo Pete! Andrew Gold is the guy who works with 10cc, they collaborrated on several different albums, he and Graham Gouldman at least to my knowledge. Are you familiar with an album called "Greetings from Planet Love" by The Fraternal Order of the All? It's an album Andrew Gold made in the 60s as kind of a spoof on 60s music but it's phenomenal 60's psychedelic music, with a few nods to other bands, notably there are songs that are clearly dedicated to the Doors, Byrds and Bob Dylan.

Here is my list from a very underrated Art Prog Pop band of the mighty 1970s:
    1. The Original Soundtrack (Masterpiece and Epic)
    2. Sheet Music (Another Masterpiece )
    3. How Dare You (Excellent work and last with original lineup unfortunately)
    4. Deceptive Bends (Great album and better than it should have been )
    5. Bloody Tourists (Really good album and the formula works and great backup studio band)
    6. 10cc ( Good first album with highlights of whats to come)
    7. Ten Out Of 10 ( Good album with a few nuggets in there while rest is ok)
    8. Look Hear/Are You Normal? ( A few strong tracks but rest kind of a letdown)
    9. Windows In The Jungle ( Fair album has its moments but the rest a little weak)
    10. Meanwhile ( A couple of tracks I enjoy but rest don't do it for me)
    11. MirrorMirror ( Same as Meanwhile couple good tracks but rest is not my cup of tea)
Also my top 3 Godley and Creme albums that would be near the top of this list as well:
    L.
    Freeze Frame
    Consequences
Ismism/Snack Attack and Birds of Prey are oddities that I really enjoy one minute but won't listen to it again for quite a bit of time.

10CC, a truly unique band, the very definition of intelligent quirkiness, along with Sparks...
    1. Sheet Music - All killer, no filler. Three 5-star songs: Wall Street Shuffle, Worst Band In The World, and Somewhere In Hollywood. The absolutely brilliant 4-star Old Wild Men and Clockwork Creep.
    2. How Dare You - Another all killer, no filler album. Two 5-star songs: I'm Mandy Fly Me and Don't Hang Up. The 4-star incredibly witty Lazy Ways, Art For Art's Sake, and Head Room.
    3. 10cc - An amazingly eclectic debut album. Eight 4 star songs: Johnny Don't Do It, Sand In My Face, Donna, Headline Hustler, Speed Kills, Rubber Bullets (too offbeat to be 5-star, but close) , The Hospital Song (hilarious), and Fresh Air For My Mamma (my favorite). Waterfall is a great bonus track.
    4. Deceptive Bends - The last gasp of greatness from the band, now down to two original members. Five 4-star songs: Good Morning Judge, The Things We Do For Love, Marriage Bureau Rendezvous, People In Love, and Feel The Benefit. The other cuts fail to rate high on the quirk scale.
    5. The Original Soundtrack - I'm a bit down on this elpee, a bit too clever for its own good. Only three 4-star songs: Une Nuit a Paris, I'm Not In Love (the one unquirky hit), and Blackmail.
    6. Bloody Tourists - Two 4-star songs: Dreadlock Holiday and For You And I. The rest, eh....
    7. Windows In The Jungle - Their last 4-star song: 24 Hours. Nothing else notable.

10cc i are the best band that ever existed for me personally. The reason for that is because the 1st 4 albums consist of 5 star songs all the way through with the exception of the debut album having 1 4 star song (ships don't just disappear in the night) which is why i rank it 4th. No other band has achieved this in my opinion. Their music also inspired me to learn guitar (heavy eric stewart influence) and play hundreds of gigs in various bands throughout my life. Love the original 10cc (1973-1978) Discovered them as a music hungry 9 year old in 1975, via my older sister's "The Original Soundtrack" 8-track tape. I was so turned on by the album's innovative and stunning arrangements, harmonies & rock-pop hooks, I went and bought the LP with my allowance at Dee's Electronics the next week. A true innovative classic of the era.
I think your ranking is pretty much dead on! Perfect advice on this band. I might only rank "THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK" (1975) at the very top, due to it's epic tracks and full realization of this uniquely talented act. That said, "SHEET MUSIC" (1974) is absolutely brilliant and the true contender, if not winner. Also heavily dig both "Deceptive Bends" (1977) and "How Dare You!" (1976) as well. All fantastic records.
Re: "The Original Soundtrack," I'm surprised you didn't mention the epic album opener, *ONE NIGHT IN PARIS* (normal American way it was spelled on my Mercury LP's "big city" center label), as not only one of the LP's best tracks, but also as the song that obviously influenced QUEEN the very most.
I've said for decades that "One Night In Paris" is the cut that birthed "Bohemian Rhapsody." What with it's baroque, Caberet-like Vaudevillian turns and stunning harmony sections. There's just no doubt in my mind. I can still see Freddie listening to "One Night in Paris"....like this: 🤯
I also think *BLACKMAIL* is one of the coolest, grooviest & catchiest songs of their career. Just bloody brilliant!
    Again, excellent, spot on ranking!
    Marc

P.s. and smart to point out avoiding those banal bottom 3. Definitely not worth anyone's time. That culture pandering stuff is just not 10cc.
It's all about 1973-1978. That's where all the brilliance lies. 😎

I think Ten out of 10 is actually a very strong album . The problem is, they made two versions, they composed three new songs for the American version in collaboration with Andrew Gold, and they are really good. Both versions has really good songs that is not included on the other version. But if you have the cd with all songs, you can put together an optimal version of the album. If you do that, you will find an album that is much better than ”Bloody Tourists” in my opinion. I had the european version back then and did not like it much. I only found out about the three added songs lately, and they are really good with a little more of the old 10cc vibe. They really add to the album.
This is my ”version” of the album:
    1. "Don't Ask"
    2. "The Power of Love"
    3. "Les Nouveaux Riches"
    4. "Memories" (US Mix)
    5. "We've Heard It All Before
    6. "Don't Turn Me Away"
    7. "Listen with Your Eyes"
    8. "Overdraft in Overdrive"
    9. "Lying Here with You"
    10. "Run Away"

One of my favorite bands! My love for them is complicated because I'm kind of half and half on the quirky art rock and the more conventional pop. I think the art rock has aged more gracefully than the other stuff but there's plenty to love on both sides of the coin. I wish Eric and the guys would kiss and make up. One last proper album together would be a perfect swan song.
    01) Deceptive Bends
(a fantastic balance of all musical aspects of the band)
    02) How Dare You!
    03) The Original Soundtrack
    04) Ten Out Of 10
(yep, crazy but I love this one...the UK edition)
    05) Sheet Music
    06) Bloody Tourists
    07) 10cc
    08) Look Hear
    09) Mirror Mirror
    (barely a 10cc album)
    10) Windows In The Jungle
    (lifeless)
    11) Meanwhile (dullsville)

The bad joke was that when Godley & Creme left the group became 5cc. But in a way it's true: the group never wrote material as good as when the full group was together.
For me, the best albums are "Sheet Music" and "How Dare You". Depending on the day I'll choose one over the other.
After the split, "Deceptive Bends" is best and for Godley & Creme "L" is best. Zappa influence on the latter.

Agree with you Pete, though I would put "Ten Out of 10" right after the release of "Deceptive Bends". I feel that "Bloody Tourists" was moving in another direction, although still good and 10 times better than "Look Hear". If you really want to dive into the history of the band and Strawberry Recording Studios, check out the definitive biography by Liam Newton.

Agreed, the first 5 are essential, Bloody Tourists is good but this is when it started not to sound like 10cc anymore. I remember Eric Stewart saying he seemed to have lost the magic after his car crash. 10cc were my first favourite band as a young teenager, their music is burnt into my soul.

Wonderfully inventive band that could veer towards pure self-indulgence on occasions, but they knew how write a song - so much so they knew they could take the piss sometimes. Love their use of madly over-driven guitars on songs that would be played on daytime radio and most people wouldn't even notice. Clever.

I'm not familiar with the "Ten OUt of Ten" album so was unaware that Vic Emerson played keyboards on it. Vic was the long-time keyboard player for Sad Cafe, a very under-appreciated UK band here in the US. "Mirror Mirror" was disappointing but has the beautiful track "Why Did I Break Your Heart". "Sheet Music" is so damn good. Yeah, "Dreadlock Holiday" is irresistible.

Obviously bigger in the UK! Saw their last gig as a four piece at Knebworth in 76 supporting the Stones, never really the same after Godley and Creme (Cream!) quit, still some great songs but....having said that , Godley and Creme possibly went too far in the other direction with their first release 'Conequences' , a triple album featuring narration from Peter Cook! Love the first four albums.

This idea, listening to music this way.....DIGGING through the discographies is a different way to listen to music then the way 99% of the people do it. After the split had Godley & Creme continued with the 10cc name instead of the other two , how would their albums stacked up using the band name ? maybe they would have been made different as maybe the later band albums had theyd been put out as Gouldman & Stewart, instead wasnt there a 2019 tour with just Graham Gouldman from all the orginal four ?

Cheers for reviewing a much overlooked band (10cc) and I agree with your comparisson to XTC, I actually feel they have a lot in common... Both deeply influenced by The Beatles, and both combine many other musical influences int their music... And Both at their best attain that level of Beatle Magic And Quality, and at times even surpass it... I also agree to the who came first in the multi-layered vocal approach and I too feel 10cc did it first... I can welll understand your order choice and I can only itpick with it slightly I would put all the albuns with the orgibal lineup in the top 5 (with the first album as #4) and Bloody Tourist as 6 Deceptive bends as 7... Great Ranking thank you for taking the time to shine the light in quirky bands that spent all too little time in the limelight... Check out the Godley and Creme (rhymes with 'dream' :) ) albums after the split. You can see *exactly* what was lost from the band (and also how *they* missed Gouldman and Stewart)
