This was actually not about a relationship although to anyone you can interpret music to your own experiences which is the great part about music, but this is about what happened in her previous album and the era of “Erotica.”
She was called grandma in her 30’s and constantly judged for her sexuality. For being herself and expressing everything about herself in every way possible personally and professionally.
She has always been this way and this her response to the media backlash. It wasn’t just them saying she is wrong but they were literally telling her that she was satanic and evil etc. She looked back she this time more recently and expressed how lonely she felt during that time and how she felt she had no one in the industry to turn to for help with that much negativity from the press. She is such a strong person but that doesn’t mean she didn’t have feelings about it all.
Live to Tell from the Confessions Tour is another masterpiece.

But to share: she is not talking about a “man”. She’s talking / speaking / whispering / singing to the society. This is her comment on the horrible misogyny she faced when she released her album “Erotica” and the book “Sex”, which was a photo essay about her sexual fantasies. The press and other artists were horrible to her and very few supported her. But the irony is that because she released “Erotica” and “Sex”, they are the reason why female singers etc. are able to do all the things they choose to do today. Madonna is not just an icon. She is pop culture. She is the reason and the inspiration what pop culture could be - if you work hard!

Great reaction. Madonna wrote this for her critics, who were shaming her and slamming her for being sexual. Critics were hard on her for Justify my Love and Erotica, and her SEX book. Women are supposed to be sexual props for men, but women cannot be sexual themselves and have or own their fantasies. Madonna broke that ceiling. Stars today from Beyonce to Gaga to Nicki to Cardi all owe that freedom to Madonna destroying that door so they can walk through.

Madonna was ridiculed in the media for going to far what expressing her thoughts about sex, especially after for sex book with was released 2 days after her erotica album. At this stage of her career Madonna was the biggest pop star on the planet on the same level with Michael Jackson. Madonna even talked about it in her women of the year speech from billboard in 2016 that in 1992-1993 was the hardest years of her music career and she couldn’t understand why prince who sang about similar topics did not cop any heat that Madonna was. Madonna basically said it was all because she was a women and the music industry felt threatened by her and that she had gone too far. Madonna to this day is still releasing music and it recognised as the highest selling female recording artist of all time with 335 million records sold worldwide. Only the Beatles, Elvis and Michael Jackson have sold more then Madonna and she is the only one still around today (minus 2 Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Star)
