Thank YOU! I’m currently changing my alternator on my 2020 jeep gladiator. Normally I would just call my dad with questions. He passed not too long ago so I’ve turned to UA-cam. Because I’m stubborn and like working on my jeep on my own. I have watched OVER A DOZEN videos! YOURS is hands down the best one. So thank you for being a stand in dad for me on this project. My next project is transfer case seal haha 😅
That was the best car repair video that I've ever seen. The narrator was so clear. Every detail was covered. The pace was fast. The camera has perfect visibility.
On 10 year old Jeep that breaker bar part is not a joke! Took some elbow grease 😂 this video saved my life! Amazing tutorial 👍🏻 this man is saving lives!
I replaced my alternator yesterday after watching this video. It was pretty easy. The hardest part was releasing the belt tensioner since I was working alone. I stood in the front of the Jeep on the passenger side and put a cheater on my breaker bar then leaned my weight into it. The hydraulic cylinder compressed after a moment and I was able to slip the belt off the power steering pulley. Putting the belt back on was easier than taking it off. I did not remove the triangle bracket and instead just removed the alternator. I could not get the small electrical connector on the intake to unplug and I was worried it would break so instead I just rolled the whole air intake over on top of the engine and left it plugged in. There is enough slack in the wire to do this. The two long bolts on the alternator have a ridiculous amount of thread on them, a lot more than I anticipated but it was fine. The Jeep dealer wanted $1,190 for a new alternator which includes labor. They also offered a remanufactured alternator for $512 installed. I bought a remanufactured alternator at O’Reilly’s for $224 and installed it myself in less than an hour. The alternator from O’Reilly came with a lifetime warranty where as either option from the dealer did not. I am an old man with serious health issues and I got this done by myself. If I can do it, anybody can do it.
Awesome video! My alternator went out a few days ago, and my husband ordered a new one for me. It arrived today while hubs was at work, and by following your video i was able to remove and replace it in just over an hour on my own! Thanks to you my husband has his whole evening to relax after work, and i have a lot more confidence when it comes to doing little jobs on my jeep! Thank you!
Awesome! You should be doing all how -to videos!,, thank you for the concise, no BS, straightforward video with the perfect amount of Detail! Great job.
Many thanks David! I wish that I could do it full time but currently it doesnt pay the same as my day job lol. Maybe one day and then I can put out even more videos! Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe!
I have a 2018 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon and was viewing this video to be more informed about my Jeep. I want to extend my compliments to the mechanic and videographer. The mechanic was clear, precise and explained every detail while the cameraman did his job. Nice work guys. You also saved me some money in the future if I ever need an alternator or a new serpentine belt. Well done and keep the videos coming.
G Ran many thanks! I am a one man show...that includes being the camera guy....the Mechanic.....the sound guy....the editor. The editing is what makes it all look good. Over the years I have taking more time to work on the small details like sound, lighting, camera angles, etc and it’s nice to see that people notice. Many thanks again for the great feedback
I have to say I’m impressed with your production work - camera, sound, editing and especially lighting. I worked in broadcasting for over 30 years. I’ve set up shoots, produced video commercials, trailers and promos. Your work is impeccable it shows that you care about how you portray your message and yourself. Did a graphics house produce the logo for you or did you create that? I have to say during my day I was spoiled. My job was to view and write. The go into an edit room with professional editors and audio engineers and put together the magic. Today, you have to do everything yourself. Just wanted to say great work keep it up.
@@georan4323 Many thanks man. It means alot coming from someone with your back ground. It is a labor of love......it has to be because it doesnt pay that great. But as long as people are learning from the videos......I am happy. Sometimes I wish I would just film and not worry about the small details. A 30 minute repair takes me about 3 hours to film it feels like lol. But again....I wouldnt be happy if I did that way. I had someone on Fiverr do the "grinding" intro and the actual logo was done at 48hourlogo. Thanks again!
High praise to you for this highly instructive video. This is the ideal level of detailed verbal instructions and actual physical demonstration. This is the gold standard for instructional videos!
Awesome video. I actually only watched it to see how to replace the belt, figuring it would be covered. So this video is not only a great video for alternator replacement, it's incidentally also the best video on youtube for how to replace the serpentine belt as well. Thank you!
I just watched to see how to change serpentine belt on my wife's 2014 Wrangler unlimited Sahara! Fantastic video killed two birds with one stone. 63 years old always learning new things! You are a great instructor ! I just subscribed you have a fan!!!
We’ll done with the instructions. Camera angles can play a big part of good instructions video. We’ll play. 5 years later you still saving people money. I appreciate you.
David, you are the man! Seriously this video is done at the best pace & every shot is extremely clear. I definitely feel more confident & will be replacing mine tomorrow. If I could, I’d definitely buy you a beer! Cheers brother, and thank you
Best online mech video ever. Direct... to the point and simply put. Angles were great. He even said the right size sockets needed. I have never changed mine before. Did a full replacement in 45min.
I’m not a mechanic. Great Video! By far the best I have seen! Easy to understand, step by step for a novice. I feel like it could do the alternator myself with the right tools.
Total success! Minor hiccup on breaking clip while removing intake unit. Saved myself $20 by using 1/2” ratchet rather than breaker bar. The breaker bar task was a doozy but with someone else’s help, was able to move belt on and off. I know this video saved me hundreds of dollars. Just wanted to say thanks! Truly appreciated! 10 out of 10 stars!
Hey David, I’m absolutely 💯 confident that I can do this job because of your very detailed Ana’s clear video. I just subscribed and will be checking out your other videos! Thanks brother. Keep doing what you’re doing! Stay blessed!🤙🏽
I just followed your instructions to the letter and the alternator replacement was so simple. The hydraulic tensioner was the worst part. Took about 1.5 hours all in
Thanks for the very informative video, for what little info is needed. By that I simply mean because it's a pretty elementary repair, not because of the amount of info. In fact, for what it is, you managed to detail every step in the most professional and clearest way possible. Im thanking you for the video because Im doing this job tomorrow for one of our customers, off the clock for cash. We dont actually work on customer's cars, we work on their motorhomes. I'm an RV service technician. But we try to do little things outside our wheel house for good customers. Now that Ive seen the job done by someone who is obviously a professional, I can go do it tomorrow and look just as professional. In fact, before the customer gets there, I can have every tool needed organized and laid out on the cart in order, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 16mm, ratchet, impact driver, breaker bar, small flat blade screw driver, gloves, throws and fender covers, all ready to go so I can get in and get out and look like I really know my shit and impress the customer!! So, again, thank you! 😁🤘
Excellent! What a great explanation and demo! I tried to do this the other day, but couldn't. Teaching me about the hydraulic dampener and the correct direction to rotate the pulley will make all the difference. Thank You! Great logo, by the way.
Well done instructional video, I appreciate you doing this. I was able to follow your steps and replaced my 2016 JK alternator with no trouble at all. Thanks!
Really outstanding instruction and thanks for getting me through my alternator swap. I'm not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to auto repair and when I need something done on a vehicle, I look for instruction videos to help me judge whether or not I have the skillset to do the job with reliable instruction. Until I found your video, I was not sure this job was one I felt like taking on (and possibly messing up). Thanks again.
Excellent video!!! One of the best I’ve seen on how to work on my wife’s Jeep. Loved how you described everything and great camera work. Thank you 👍🏼👊🏼
Man… this video was awesome. I replaced my alternator in just over an hour by following this step by step. Had to do it again two days later because I got a bad replacement alternator… But anyways, this video was really clear and easy to follow.
Hands down the best video, and a great lead in for changing the serpentine belt and also being able to create room to do the water pump for the 3.6 L Jeep Wrangler. Thank you very much for your time.
Fantastic video. Just installed a 250 Amp Alternator from Michael Singer on my 2016 Jeep JK Rubicon 2 Door. Your video made it very easy. I had to replace the belt with a shorter one due to the overdrive pulley on the alternator. Piece of cake. Thanks for the help.
Would you happen to know the torque specs on the 2 bolts that mount the alternator bracket to the timing cover and then the 2 upper longer bolts that mount the alternator to the timing cover as well?

This was by far the best tutorial video I’ve ever ran into! God you’re amazing at this keep up the great work! You’re helping a newbie like me look like a pro 😂
Thank you, David, your breakdown was right on. Until I watched your video I thought I was going to have to remove the alternator just to replace the belt. The previous four videos I watched on removing the belt never mentioned the triangular bracket under the alternator. Go figure. Even with the two-foot breaker-bar, this old man [70], needed a three-foot cheater pipe on the breaker-bar to push that hydraulic assembly down, loosening the belt to get it back on.
Glad it all worked out in the end.....its all about leverage and actually about going slow to aid in getting that odd tensioner to release enough to remove the belt. Odd set up for sure from the tensioner to the backwards alternator. Thanks Ben for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe!
Thanks Steve for the kind words. Appreciate the feedback and for you noticing the details that I spend so much time trying to get right. Make sure to subscribe.
Lol.....each group requests more videos. I try to mix it up the best I can when possible. I certainly will try and thanks for the awesome comment and for watching.
Thanks David, your video really helped me see that it's not that hard to do. I'm going to replace it on my 2014 wrangler since the warranty just expired.
Shawn? Lol.....My name is David but its cool. Thanks for finding and for watching the video. Once you know the steps it isnt that bad. Just think of it as just bolts and screws and nothing complicated. Make sure to subscribe and check out my other videos when you get time.
Subscribed! GREAT video. Concise, well spoken, I'm impressed! I'll be changing my alternator out later in the week using your video as a guide! Thanks!
MotorCity Mechanic I went ahead and got started tonight. I did have to remove the coolant reservoir to get ample room to compress that shock with the breaker bar. Also the middle bolt on my bracket was a 16mm. While I was in there I found a hairline crack in my thermostat 😠 so back to the auto parts shop for a replacement before I put the new alternator in. Thanks again for the awesome video!
Your welcome. Thanks for the update and glad to see that its coming along fine other then the t-stat housign issue but then again what better time to catch it.
I have watched your video , very well done , i needed to change the belt , wasn't sure if i could do it myself , thanks to you i did it and even did a bit more Keep making video , i also have a 2016 Ram 1500 that will need some brake work Thanks again
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah it will need to come off to at least get you more access. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe. sorry for the delay
@@MotorCityMechanic As it turned out I pulled the water pump for nothing. It was diagnosed as being the oil cooler housing that was leaking, spraying toward the firewall from directly over the motor, right in the center. All good now.
Nice work! Keep the JK videos coming please. Even if it is "replacing" something that didn't really need to be replaced. JK owners are pretty familiar with that concept.
I certainly will. I filmed as much as I could the day that I had my hands on that Jeep but still didnt film everything I wanted to....never enough time. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
Helped all the way through question though. The top screws of mounting bracket won’t quite get in to the alternator however the bottom 2 screws got in and the alternator is sitting on tightened top screws. Is that ok or will I need another alternator? Edit: after probably 100 watches still put mount on wrong 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️. One quick review to correct once again great video.
Is it really necessary to remove the triangular bracket? I think you can just remove the two long screws holding the alternator to the engine and the two short screws holding the alternator to the triangular bracket. Thus leaving said bracket in place.
There is always more then two ways to skin a cat. It might make for a very tight fit. Next time I have to replace one I will look a little bit closer. Thanks for asking and for watching. Make sure to subscribe.
There's always something more difficult than the video shows. On my Jeep, that breaker bar part with the pulley does not want to move. I'm literally standing on the breaker bar and it's barely budging. But was finally able to get it to move but had to put a lot of strength and effort on the breaker bar while my wife moved the belt off and on for me.
Great video sir!! I do have a question what are some signs that an alternator is bad. I had to pick up my daughter said my 2013 Jeep Wrangler didn't want to start, After jumping engine vehicle turned off a couple of times was able to keep it running made home but did notice while traveling all gauges were not working properly radio screen turned off. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks
You can replace the belt with out removing the alternator. It does require removal of the lower alternator bracket however. That will get you the needed room to work it around the pulley on the alternator. Thanks for that question!
By far the most useful, clear, and thorough instructional how-to’s when working on Jeeps! Please keep them coming!
Thank YOU! I’m currently changing my alternator on my 2020 jeep gladiator. Normally I would just call my dad with questions. He passed not too long ago so I’ve turned to UA-cam. FYI to anyone installing a new alternator; torque the top 15mm mounting bolts to 43 lb-ft, and the bottom 13mm bolts to 22 lb-ft.
That was the best car repair video that I've ever seen. The narrator was so clear. Every detail was covered. The pace was fast. The camera has perfect visibility.

torque settings on bolts? (alternator and bracket)
Dave you do a great job at explaining the process. If I had a Jeep I'd know exactly what to do!
Well you never know what you might own one day or someone that you know close to you might buy one day. Much appreciated
So true. I've owned a Jeep in the past so like you say, you never know. Thanks!
Your welcome and thank you
I will be doing thins on my Wrangler with in a few days, this will save me some torment. Good video.

Great video. You do an excellent job of explaining step by step what needs to be done
Excellent video! I'm actually replacing a water pump on the same vehicle and it looks like I need to pull this off in order to do that.
@@mdpocoroba Glad it got fixed in the end.....appreciate the update! I dont see alot of them leak but it happens from time to time.
This dude’s a real pro. Thank you!!

Thanks for the vid, question on the torque specs on all the bolts you remove if you have info on those would be very much apprey
It takes some effort for sure because of that shock they added to the belt tensioner set up. That’s the main reason I have some long breaker bars
Thanks
Torque specs for the alternator and bracket bolts?

can you change the belt without taking the alternator out seems like it would be a tight squeeze?
You can replace the belt with out removing the alternator. It does require removal of the lower alternator bracket however. That will get you the needed room to work it around the pulley on the alternator. Thanks for that question!
