    YES!! I love these videos! I just planted 6 fruit trees this week (2 peach, 2 fig, and 2 pear) in region 8b and I'm about to prune to knee/pocket height on the peach and pear trees (fig trees are already small). Taking off two thirds of the tree height for peaches and pears. Then I will paint trunks with 50% white latex paint and 50% water mixture. Trees are 6 feet apart on center. Each tree is in a 3'x3' x 1' tall raised bed for better drainage. (I have very bad clay soil) Thanks for these incredibly helpful videos!! Have I missed anything?

    Watch a couple of your videos, I've learned a lot. I planted over 50 different fruit trees. Thought all I had to do was plant, give it good soil and put mulch down every year. Never thought I needed to prune. My trees look awful, not growing. In my first year, I lost half to the deep freeze 2 winter's ago, and I lost another half to drought. This winter, the deer ate another half. Down to 5 trees out 58. I got 7 that look alive that deer chewed in half. I'm going prune damage off. Maybe they make into bushe.
    Can I do a heavy pruning in April.
    I wasn't going to start over, but I decided to. I bought 10 more fruit trees this past weekend. Thought I'd watch some video and found your channel. Great videos.

    Thanks for all the good pruning info. We planted about 20 fruit trees, some in pots. I am following the same method and did the hard prune at knee high except a couple fruit trees that came with too big of a caliper. Those I left taller with a “nurse”branch and am waiting for three buds to make a good scaffold and will then shorten the trees accordingly.

    Hello, nice videos. However, I think you have some inaccuracies with regards to fig pruning. Common fig trees, usually grow fruit only on new growth. You say you're keeping branches for fruit for that year, but unless it's a bifera or San Pedro variety, you won't get much fruit if any on last year's growth, but only on new year's growth. The pruning for breba (first) crop is entirely different, and you'd probably know if you have such a variety. You might want to make that clear to your viewers as they might end up with the incorrect pruning regiment for their fig trees.

    • @urbanfarmstead
      @urbanfarmstead  Рік тому

      Thank you for recognizing that and sharing this suggestion. Yes, the definition only fruit on new growth. I rewatched to see that I said and I do see how it could be confusing or misleading especially for new growers as you said. I meant I would get fruit via the new growth from them, which I did, but certainly a good point to clarify in the future. Thank you

    I believe you did not plant dwarf or semi dwarf fruit trees. You planted standard fruit trees and are pruning them to keep them smaller. I have read that fruit tree root spread is determined by the type of the root stock.
    I want to plant 2 sweet cherry and 2 tart cherry trees in my back yard. I also want to plant 2 apple and 2 pear trees in my front yard. I want to keep the cherry trees about 6 - 8 feet tall and the apple / pear trees 8 - 10 feet tall. I am not sure what size (dwarf, semi dwarf, or standard) I will be able to purchase.

    My keiffer pear was planted incorrectly. So is growing at a bent angle where the main branches are growing parallel to the ground. How do you straighten it? How do you prune a kriffer pear with branches growing straight up inside the tree? Not sure if they are sucker branches?

    • @urbanfarmstead
      @urbanfarmstead  Рік тому

      Unfortunately it’s not really practical to give specific pruning advice without actually being there with the tree, but straightening would be done trough pruning cuts made to a bud or branch going in the direction you want it to grow. Suckers will be anything growing from below the graft union

    Hi Kyle, Thanks for the awesome videos! I just planted 19 bareroot fruit trees on my new property last January/Feb . Saw your advice about not pruning if rain is imminent so I waited. That rain turned into 2 ft. of snow on the ground (@ 3600 ft. elev.) and now more rain forecast in a couple of days, forecast to stay with us for up to 2 weeks! That will be followed by sunny, 70 degree weather which I'm sure will get the trees going! My question to you is should I dig my way in and do my first pruning now before the rain starts or wait until its over? I have apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, apricots & pluots. I was hoping to get some copper dormant spray on them as well before they take off. Absolutely THE best videos on planting, pruning, irrigating and gardening!!

    • @urbanfarmstead

    Thank you very much for your videos, I also planted several fruit trees when you started, and every time I prune I do it with greater confidence because from you I have learned the purposes of pruning and how to prune: a good structure that allows more aeration, sufficient capture of sun (so that branches of some tree do not cover another), ease in fruit collection, and obtain higher productions.

    Oh my gosh, Kyle! Your videos are the best! In a previous life, I was a TV commercial editor so I know how much time and effort it takes to find and edit in clips from previous videos. You're such a great communicator, you should be a spokesperson for your fire department, or another entity that needs information dispensed clearly and pleasantly. Now my question...It's June 2nd in Seaside, CA. and I just bought a 2-year old, 5 gal nectarine tree. Should I put it in the ground now or wait until fall when it is (mostly) dormant? Also...if I should leave it in the container until fall, should I prune off the top now or wait until then? Thanks and keep up the great work!

    I loved this! Just subscribed. So informative. I have a small orchard I planted around four years ago, so they are quite small. The first year every leaf was eaten by gypsy moths. I thought for sure they were goners. They slowly recovered but they don’t blossom. I finally got the guts to trim them back, and it really helped them to bush out. I have to give them another trim and I am scared to death. 😬 watching this really helped. I’m praying for fruit next year. Thanks for this video. 😊
